Re: [RBW] Re: About a crash a Riv could have prevented

2018-11-02 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm glad that no one was badly injured. I've had my share of falls,
fortunately, fewer than might have been, but I've had some quasi miraculous
saves, one in particular when I was bombing along a dirt path racing a guy
on a dirt bike (motorbike) in the distance (I was much younger then) and
stupidly looking at him instead of my route. I turned to look forward *just* in
time to see a 12 or 15 inch wide ditch across my path -- and instinctively
did a bunny hop that saved me from a very violent header. Thank God,
particularly for pedal retention!

Another time I wasn't so lucky: stupidly got my front wheel in a cattle
guard, flipped, and saw the bike tumbling after me, viewed head down
through my legs. Stupid motor traffic was snickering as I picked myself up,
but a couple of hillbilly types out of Deliverance stopped and offered me a
ride to the hospital. Publican and Pharisee! Bruised a rib or 2 and had
some scrapes, but otherwise I was fine. Needed a new front wheel, though.

My wife went over the bars with the cheapy v brakes and cheapy levers on her
Raleigh Detour. She did not get hurt.
But upon me test riding right after the rear derailer got wrapped up in the
spokes.

Once she was passing over perpendicular to an 8 inch wide x 20 foot fissure in
the road about two inches deep and crashed. Again, unharmed. I am guessing
somehow her 35mm front tire got hung up in the split in the road and stopped
the bike.

Once I got my pedal touched on a curb and endoed on my Giant Defy bike. Once my
23mm tire on same got caught in sidewalk mold line and crashed. Once went off
MUP, and crashed upon front wheel not making it back up blacktop at 45 degree
angle. Was new rider in all three instances. Got hit by car on my Bleriot. I
praise God that me and wife not injured in these crashes. Just minor scrapes.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-02 Thread Patrick Moore
I'd guess that the principal reasons for the difference are cost and a more
general all-rounder use for the Roadini; the Roadeo is a high-end road bike
aimed at the club rider as an alternative to good if not top quality carbon
fiber frames -- heck, as an alternative to 15K carbon fiber frames, if it
comes to that. So small, incremental, but real improvements in weight and,
even more, that "springiness" that you feel with a top quality steel frame
are qualities that particular market will pay for.

Me, I'd love a Roadeo, but will not buy a Roadini. (Does anyone have a 58
to sell? (The 58 is 6-4-6, right?) -- Though I still wonder about getting
another 26-wheel road custom ...

[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-02 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Grant will gladly discuss these issues with you, based on my experience
asking him about TAIHomer vs. Roadini vs. MUSARoadeo.
I was researching this all in depth for my latest purchase.
I wanted the lightest tubing set they make because I knew the usual Riv
8/5/8 frames fight against me on hills. Needed something that cooperates
better for me. I just can't power an 8/5/8. He understood that TaiHomer and
Roadini might not be what I am looking for.

The Roadeo is made specifically for road riding and not for
touring/commuting/off road. But I use it for all road riding, includung
commuting, because I carry small loads on the saddle bag and 6/4/6 works
better for me. Easier to get up hills. Noticeably.
I think the Legolas and MUSARoadeo are the thinnest tubing specs they ever
made on production bikes and they still make the mUSA Roadeo in regular
production for now. Legolas as a custom I think.

So for me, it was about getting a frame that just makes it easier to pedal
along.. The only thing I give up is the ability to use 42mm tires. But it
works great with 32mm tires and I am happy with that size. Cannot do
fenders unless I use 28mm tires. Of course, 42 with fenders would be great,
but then I would have to be on an 8/5/8 Rivbike, which I already know,
after owning 4 of them, that it would not be worth the hardship getting up
hills and fighting the bike. The 32mm is fine for me on the Roadeo. The
28mm with fenders on the Rambouillet as foul weather bike is fine. I can
always go back to 650b x 42 on the Ram if I want the wider tires and the
conversion works perfect on the Ram. Would not work good on Roadeo because
fendering a Roadeo would be harder to do as the chainstay bridge is really
far from where the fender would have to engage it. So, with these not being
one size fits all bikes, you have to think about what is the most important
for you and be willing to compromise on the rest or have a second bike to
fulfill your other wishes.

Maybe your friend was trying to shift his gears with a stick when they
crashed, or their fender jammed, or their overloaded Wald basket/nitto rack
failed into their front wheel? ;-)

My point is, any bike rider can wipe out. V-brakes can have the same type
of on/off problems with modulation that you're referring to with disk
brakes, but I don't think disks are inherently more dangerous. There's many
situations or environments where they could be easily be seen as being more
safe. My experience with disk brakes has been super positive; even the
cheapo hydro models are so much nicer that cantis IMO.

Hey Lum,

Appreciate you staying with me on these questions.

The next one being my 3rd Riv, I want to think it through a little more
before pulling the trigger. Hence all these questions.

The big question in my head is, with its specific deliberate design, how
heaver is Roadini as compared to Roadeo.

Another part I'm pondering (probably only the designer can answer) is if
their previous iteration of road bikes is lighter because of a different
thickness/tapering proportions, what's the compromise. There's got to be a
reason why they changed the design from Roadeo. Or is it that due to the
type of tubing/material, the lighter (yet strong enough) design is only
possible in MUSA frames?...

interested in a dynamo hubbed front wheel for an atlantis, so in rim brake
and silver. let me know what you got. also if you have the wheelset front
and rear, i could be interested in this as long as the rear spacing is
135mm.

Thanks!

Daniel, not poor form at all.

The Breezer Uptown is a great bike for someone who is starting to look into
bicycling. Who knows, they may get into bicycling and happen upon "Just
Ride" and find it good reading. Next thing you know they may grab a
Rivendell or two. :)

[RBW] Re: About a crash a Riv could have prevented

2018-11-02 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Daniel,
This is my story! I decided that I wanted to ride a bike from my apartment
to the T station ~April 2008. Public transport wasn't so reliable, and I
wanted to sell my car.

My friend recommended Breezer Uptown 8 without missing a beat, and I
happened to see it at the LBS. To be honest, it was more than I wanted to
spend, but it was ready "right off the rack". I got the U-frame and had a
blast.

After a few years, I figured out what worked, what didn't, and I gained a
lot of confidence riding. I ventured off the MUP and started to feel
not-so-awful riding on streets with traffic. Nearly all my riding was
commuting and utility cycling.

I stumbled onto Lovely Bike, which brought me to Riv. There's another
thread about tinkering with different handlebar setups, and the journey.
For me, it's been a journey. I wasn't ready for a Riv in 2008, and I
wouldn't have spent the money on one.

Another datum: my neighbor bike commutes and has done so for >5 years. He's
looking to upgrade his Jamis bike, and asked me if I wouldn't mind telling
him how much I paid for my Riv. He was pretty surprised, and I don't think
he'll be spending the money on one.

Breezer Uptown is terrific b/c it's a great price point and has everything
a commuter should have: dyno lights, rack, fenders. Handles fine/great(?).
I can get people on bikes, and maybe a some will become enthusiasts...
either way, the more people on bikes, the better.

[RBW] Re: About a crash a Riv could have prevented

2018-11-02 Thread Brewster Fong
Agree, one thing I've learn is you can't "force" bikes onto people. They
have to figure it out for themselves. Now, if they are interested in your
bike, then go for it.

Once, I had just built up an old litespeed ti frameset that I got cheap. It
had 25mm tires and fenders and a bunch of mix Campy/Shimano parts I had
laying around - basically a mutt bike. But, it is a nice riding bike that I
now use as my commuter. One day, my boss saw my bike and she said - Wow, I
bet you spent $500 for your bikeI told her I spent a little more. She
just looked at me and I could see her amazement that anyone would spend
more, let alone $1.6Kin other words, people who don't ride have no idea
what a bike costs or the difference between a $200 target bike or a $2000
Rivendell.
\
Further, I agree that the rider may have crashed whether she had the disc
brake bike or a Riv.

Of course, YMMV! Good Luck!

2018-11-02 Thread Daniel M
So, this may be really poor form on a forum dedicated to a bike company we all
hold dear, but when I am asked to recommend a practical town bike, my answer is
always the same: Breezer Uptown 8. Upright riding position with slightly swept
bars, aluminum frame available in standard or low-step versions, steel fork,
26" wheels with V-brakes and clearance for 2.0" tires, rear rack and fenders,
8-speed Shimano internal gear hub with fully enclosed chain case AND front dyno
with lights. Still under $900 new. It has nowhere near the grace of a Rivendell
and not enough gear range to tackle steep hills while loaded, but it is the
perfect entry-level daily "no excuses" bike as someone mentioned here. If there
were another brand/model with all of these features, I would mention it in the
same breath, but I can't find anything even close and it's going on 10 years
now.

I bought one for my dad and then my mom; they became weekend riders as a
result. I recommended one to a friend who became a daily bike commuter using
it. I recommended one to my wife's mom who bought one to replace a 700c hybrid
(that I had installed fenders on a few years earlier) and I don't think she's
ridden the old bike since. Finally, I found a used one for my cousin who
started college this fall and she loves it.

So if you fail to talk someone into a nicely-appointed Clem, this would be my
next suggestion. If the user wears it out or their tastes evolve, they could
upgrade to a Riv later, because by then they'll be sold on the virtues of a
practical bike!

As previously mentioned, my SV-9 sounded like this:

Sent it back, and they confirmed it was defective.

My replacement non-defective SV-9 doesn't make any noise, nor do my SON
hubs.

(Very rarely I can feel a slight vibration through the bars, but it's
unobtrusive. I notice it on maybe 1 out of 5 brevets, and only briefly.)

I have two PD-8s that make almost the same noise. It seems to dull over
time, but never goes away completely.

It's probably the sound of the dymano/magneto parts (wound stators?

The designed with input from Grant Peterson 'Brooklyn Bicycles" are
excellent commuters.

I added a cheap dyno hub, and my son had a double top tubed, shallow

we had a hiatus in a flat city). And now that we've moved back to Western

And it can haul a ton.

And yeah, it's a drag to be asked all the time about this or that bike

[RBW] Re: About a crash a Riv could have prevented

2018-11-02 Thread Arthur Mayfield
I've done quite a few rebuild/conversions of 80s-early 90s era mtn bikes
(before the term "hardtail" was in common usage) to city/commuters, often
with solid, dependable 36 spoke 650b wheels and rim brakes, comfy
street/gravel tires, Brooks B67/68 saddles, upright bars, etc. Usually I
convert them to 1x7/8/9 at the same time, friction shifted, racks, and
fenders. Buyers and giftees have all commented on how secure and
comfortable they feel with the riding position, as well as how much better
they can see traffic and their surroundings. Too many bikes are designed
and equipped as low-quality wannabe on or off road competition machines,
which is a waste of money better spent on the right mix of geometry and
components for the average rider headed out for a pleasant, low speed ride
around town or to the market. The same type bike makes for a great commuter
for those who don't want to challenge vehicles 100 times their mass to the
right of way at breakneck speeds over potholed streets. In other words,
most new riders or adults who haven't ridden in many years. Would a Riv be
a great choice for this type of riding? Of course, but rarely can
new/casual riders swallow the price of admission, even if they can easily
afford it.

[RBW] Re: About a crash a Riv could have prevented

2018-11-02 Thread Surlyprof
I did talk my wife into a Public mixte with Nexus hub. She loves it and the
bright orange bike with match racks makes the neighbors smile when she rides
it. What I have found is that the cheaper parts are a bit more difficult to
adjust and keep adjusted. I’ll probably upgrade the brakes when she’s not
looking. The Nexus hub is the part I have to adjust the most. They tend to
miss shift as the cables stretch. Easy adjustment, but required pretty often.

[RBW] Re: About a crash a Riv could have prevented

2018-11-02 Thread Tom Wyland
I'm a bicycle advocate here in the suburbs outside Washington DC. I field
questions about bike commuting all of the time. I'm always pointing folks
toward more stable bikes with fatter tires. Most of the local bike shops
are on board with this idea as well and stock bikes that are more useful.
At most LBSs I still get looks like I'm an alien for my 40c tires, fenders,
generator lights and luggage.

I know personally I've hit patches of ice on my Dutch bike that would have
made me crash on more sporting bikes. I once heard an REI employee tell a
customer, "Oh, you want to ride 6 miles to work? You need a road bike like
this one... " while pointing at something at home in a pace line. Not good
advice.

In my opinion there are two things newer commuters need from a commuting
bike:
1) *Eliminating excuses* - Fenders, lights, racks or baskets, lockability.
Excuses eliminated: Oh, it rained last night and I don't want to get my
clothes dirty. I have to take brownies to work, I can't carry them on a
bike! It's getting dark earlier and my lights aren't working/charged. Oh,
my bike will be locked up at the Metro station, someone will steal it.
2) *Easy maintenance* - Basic shifting (1x8, 1x9., IGH or single speed),
fatter tires to prevent flats and can be pumped up 1x week, decent brakes
that won't squeal or shudder after a week
