[RBW] Medium saddle sack vs bagboy

2018-11-12 Thread Kainalu V.
The medium seems not quite twice the size of the bagboy, but close. I have a
kangaroo pouch from my medium I put on the bagboy, it's an essential addition
to the bagboy, sometimes I leave it off the medium as it's got the side
pockets. Both great bags, I do like the single strap closure on the bagboy.
Might be worthwhile waiting to see the new medium bag that'll be hitting the
shelves soon, the happibag I think?

2018-11-12 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Both are on Rivbike.com, and the descriptions and photos largely answer your
questions. https://www.rivbike.com/collections/bags

I just looked at the medium vs. the Bagabond as I need a new saddlebag for my
Hunqapillar. I went with the Bagabond for its larger capacity but similar
footprint, so I still have room for tent, sleeping bag, and pad on the rack
behind it. Obvious differences for you include no kangaroo pouch or side
pockets with the bagboy.

I like my Joe just fine!
But if I could swap it out for an Atlantis, I would.

Do you have one top tube, but would like two? My Joe has two!
Do you have typical chain stays and would like longer? My Joe has long
chain stays!
Do you like mustard color better than the Atlantis green?
I think those are the main differences... minor, I know.

Here is mine

I can send more pics if you are interested.

2018-11-12 Thread Edwin W
Stormy Kromer has a pretty good
one https://www.stormykromer.com/the-original-stormy-kromer-cap/
It is has a few features:

   1. Not a huge brim, but bigger than a cycling cap
   2. Has a little nifty way of lowering some material down over your ears,
and off your ears when you don't need it.
   3. Comes in orange!

I got one size too small so that it would not blow off, hoping it would
stretch a bit and it hasn't yet!

Doesn't get below 30 degrees F here in Nashville much,

[RBW] FS: (SimpleOne Fork + extras) Rivvy Front-end Upgrade Kit - $150 plus shipping.

2018-11-12 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
It's time for me to accept the fact that I need cash more than I need the
spare parts left over from a well intentioned but ill fated overhaul. I've
debated various alternate uses for the fork but haven't been able to bring
myself to hastily cut the steerer or attempt some other hacks necessary to
make it work with my other available frames... especially since my
remaining spare frames are too small for my own use and would essentially
be built up to sit around as potential loaners and space it too limited
right now anyway.

NOS SimpleOne fork - 1" threaded - 238mm length steerer - canti/v-brake
post - 700c - never used... had a mini front rack and wheel installed as a
dry fit only
NIB Shimano CX50 brakes - one wheel's worth
NIB Tange Levin CDS headset - 26.4

$195 total value.
I'm asking $150 plus actual shipping for all the above.
Paypal.

I bought the fork direct from Riv along with a mini front rack while they
were available shortly before they were pulled from the site for the Rosco
project. My intended frame had a headtube just under 200mm with a stock
fork that matched the 238mm steerer. I hoped to turn my old road bike into
a more versatile all-rounder but the frame failed me before I ever got
around the overhaul and full front end upgrade.

Wondering if anyone here has a use for these to help fund some of my other
more imminent projects (and to stop me from cutting the threads for a 1"
threadless conversion on a too small and lesser quality frame.)

Pics available upon request. I think I have pics of the fork saved but
need to take some of the extras.

Thanks,
Brian Cole

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders wear for wind-stopping hats for helmet-less winter riding?

2018-11-12 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
For me, a primary issue is breathability while still blocking wind, and this
goes especially for the head as cold and clammy headwear is the fastest way to
get cold in winter conditions. Thus the basic hat system I described in the
fishnet longjohn thread. Waltz wool cycling cap, boiled wool hat (2 or 4-ply,
depending on conditions), ventile hood as required (generally only if raining
or below zero. 4-ply boiled wool blocks a lot of wind. Grin. This hat system
works for all temps and conditions, summer and winter.

Yes ! Balaclavas are my favorite winter headwear. I have thin ones,
thick vintage Patagonia Powerstretch ones and this wondrous super thick

tiny repair, where a thread broke at the bottom of the center pocket. This
was done by my mum, who cares as much as about sewing as we do about
   bicycles.
   - As pictured in one of the official Eroica CA photos:
   https://photos.app.goo.gl/6NG5n1mfK596DJtg6
   - I would much prefer to *trade* this for an XL Rivendell jersey or
   other interesting jersey.

#2: *iBOB* green and white short sleeved jersey

   - Marked XXL, measurements in photos.
   - Made by Portland Cyclewear.
   - A lovely jersey that never fit right. I don't think I've worn it. No
   repairs that I can see.
   - $80, or trade for another interesting jersey that's a bit smaller.

#3: *Yazoo *black / red / white jersey

   - Marked XL, measurements in photos.
   - Made by Earth, Wind, and Rider in China.
   - No rear pockets!
   - This is probably the nicest feeling wool of any jersey I own. It is
just luxurious! I don't usually buy made in China garments, but I made an
exception for this one. It is just so nice. No repairs that I can see.
   - $50 or trade.

#4: Le Roc "*Team 5 Sport*" vintage jersey in blue and white

   - Marked size 4-5, measurements in photos. Much smaller than the others
   here!
   - Lovely vintage jersey that appears unworn.
   - Letters on front are raised flocking.
   - $50 or trade.

#5: *Ibex* 1/2 length wool shorts / knickers / tights

   - Marked size Large, length measurement in photos, waste is super
stretchy (I have worn them when I was wearing size 32 jeans and when I have
   worn size 38 jeans.)
   - Original MUSA Ibex from when they had the nice multi-material pad and
   embroidered logo.
   - Ibex shorts (especially these older versions) are my very favorites.
These still fit great but I've come to prefer the shortest and longest
ones. I think I only wore these medium-length ones once. Still next-to-new.
   - $65 or trade.

Preference given to good trades, folks who can pick up in San Francisco or
folks who want multiple items.

For trades things I'm looking for are interesting wool jerseys that fit,
knickers, Campagnolo Doppler shifters, limited edition Brooks saddles, new
production Ideale saddles, Dromarti shoes in size 47 or 48, Huret Duopar
rear derailleur, Compass bits, old French frame pumps with the little hose,
or other fancy, classic, interesting Rivish things.

I am patiently waiting for Randi Jo Fabrications to release their new round

Any hat made from Polartec Wind Pro specifically. It's a denser weave than
regular fleece, sticking to me a "just right" balance . The marketing claim
says 4x the wind resistance compared to regular Polartec (100, 200 etc.).
Forget Windstopper or anything with a barrier/laminate as it's sweaty and
inhibits hearing.

Even layering a thin hat over a thin balaclava works really well , 2 thin
layers rather than one thicker layer.

Re: [RBW] Winter wool baselayer rec needed

2018-11-12 Thread EasyRider
Brynnar, yes, I've been wearing the Costco stuff for several years and I
think it's hard to beat for the price. The tops are 1/4 zip synthetics with
a small percentage of merino in them for comfort. The tops are branded
"Paradox". I was at an REI yesterday and determined they are about a 150
weight. The bottoms I use are branded "32 degree heat" tights, no fly, and
are shockingly warm for their weight. I wear them over breathable synthetic
boxer briefs and under shorts or knickers.

The shirts are starting to wear out, so that is why I started the thread,
to see what I might do instead of buying more of the same. I'm pretty sold
on using long leg boxer briefs and cheapo tights, but I'm going to give the
Wiggys fishnet shirt and liner jacket suggestions a try.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell Riders wear for wind-stopping hats for helmet-less winter riding?

2018-11-12 Thread Patrick Moore
My principal liability in cold is my ears. Years ago I found a couple of
nice faux Peruvian hats at Target for less than $20 each, one wool the
other decent quality synthetic fleece. The look dorky but they do keep the
ears warm when temps go below freezing. Down to about freezing, depending
on wind, I prefer my wool cycling caps with ear flaps because of the brim.
Lastly, very cold and windy, a balaclava under some sort of cap with
earflaps. I do have a good head of hair, the Peruvian caps in particular
are very effective.

I've tried all sorts of toques but they keep riding up over my ears when I
bend over the bar.

Patrick Moore, who may soon have to pull out the Peruvian caps in wintry

Looking to replacement my much too small 56. Ideally looking for frame/fork

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders wear for wind-stopping hats for helmet-less winter riding?

2018-11-12 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Want to know what is good at windstopping while biking in winter in
hats/caps (no helmet coverage over hat).
Also has to be good for drops riding (small brim/no brim hats).

I have a couple really nice wool cycling caps but the breeze goes right
thru.

What works for you?
Thanks for the info.

Note: No need to discuss helmet wearing. We all know the arguments and make
our own decisions. Just want to know what hats are good at wind blocking.
Thanks so much!

[RBW] Re: Winter wool baselayer rec needed

2018-11-12 Thread Cody Bartz
150 weight sounds a bit light for your temperatures, however if you have a
full windbreaker and keep active it may be fine. I would guess 200 - 250
weight would possibly be a good weight for you. Quarter zip with a collar
is a great combination, as unzipped with the neck rolled back lets a lot of
air in, and zipped up with the collar up goes pretty far up the neck. I
have experience with wool products from Ibex, Icebreaker, Patagonia, and
Smartwool - all work well. The thinner weights do seem to wear out more
quickly.

I've got several tops and bottoms from ioMerino:
https://iomerino.com/collections/base-layers
The 170 weight Altitude base layer feels in between light and medium and
works perfectly with a button up shirt and/or thicker sweater over it for
all the riding I do around the southeast - so down to about 20 degrees F. I
really like everything I've bought from this place. Good design, good
quality, pretty good prices. They have good sales a couple times a year.

[RBW] Re: wheel build suggestions

The Velo Orange Grand Cru Touring Hub is still available in the 10-speed
version for $120 on their website. I ordered a set of Velocity Quills with
a raw unpolished or anodized finish because I wanted silver rims, but I
didn't want them polished. My front hub is a NOS White Industries that I
found on bikerecyclery.com. The wheels turned out great, but the 700x50
Soma Cazaderos barely fit on the rear of my Atlantis.

Re: [RBW] Rust proof question

2018-11-12 Thread ascpgh
Framesaver-ing a built up bike is hard since access to the tubes (those
vent holes really won't do it) is obstructed and used to risk contamination
of BB and HS bearings (back when they were cup and ball) if left in place.
You do have to get the straw into the stays, top tube and head tube to
spray. Dropping the fork, pulling the seat post and removing the BB open
that access.

The nice part about cartridge bearing BBs and HSs is that doing these three
things to permit spraying your frame's insides isn't as complicated as it
was back during the cup and loose ball paradigm. If you have an LBS you
trust, perhaps they would help in the process.

[RBW] Fishnet longjohn/ boiled wool/ ventile system details

2018-11-12 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
With some interest in this system, this thread is to summarize the system and
be a common place to ask about it. Why fishnet baselayer? Simple. moisture
management. Fishnet longjohns minimize the moisture at the skin, keeping me
warm and toasty when I’d otherwise be cold and clammy.

I use a wool fishnet longjohn top base layer. With it, I then can insulate with
any fabric, including cotton flanel. It’s highly effective at moisture
management and that is key to staying warm when aerobic activity is involved,
especially when stops happen and you cool down. You can test the system with
Wiggy’s for $38 (not skin friendly nylon, but his video also explains why
fishnet baselayer is superior)
https://www.wiggys.com/clothing-outerwear/fishnet-long-underwear/, or the wool
version is Brynje https://www.brynjeusa.com.

I just got back from a 3.5 hour ride, including an hour plus coffee and pipe at
the top, with temps 15˚F down low and about 5˚F up top, with 1,300 feet
climbing in 8 miles. Which is to say if I’m dressed to be warm, I’m sweating
and I want moisture to easily escape. With this system, it does. My ventile
jacket stayed in reserve, and I put my boiled wool sweater on for the time at
the top and the ride home. It snowed about 6” total from start of the ride to
returning home. Warm and cozy the whole ride, and stop, and inner layers were
dry when I took them off at home (I had to shake the crusted snow off my hat
and sweater.).

Lum then asked a few things.

“What between the fishnet and sweater?”
Any insulative layer. I tested this in the extreme early on, putting on a
soaking wet heavy cotton flanel (Duluth burly flannel I’d just taken ouf the
the washer, which doesn’t spin dry welll) and my Ventile jackt and then riding
for an hour at -10˚F. I stayed “not cold”, so long as I was moving (didn’t test
stopping). Parts of the sleeves were frozen stiff when I got home, but I was
fine. My usual:
Standard weight cotton flannel: 50˚F down to about 25˚F when climbing (toasty
at 50 when climbing, but I just unbutton the shirt a bit and it ventilates well)
Heavy weight cotton flannel: 25˚F to 10˚F when climbing
2 weights of sweater: normal (like Riv’s sweaters), and boiled wool (like
wearing 4 regular sweaters, but far better. Blocks a lot of wind. I’ve ridden
down hill into headwinds at 0˚F.). I will add at the top for cofee/pipe/writing
as needed, starting at 50˚F and cloudy.

“How do you keep wind from penetrating layers?”
Add canvas vest, sweater, or ventile jacket for wind blocking/heat retention as
needed. Below 20˚F, this wind layer can be a regular canvas, as all “moisture”
is dry snow. However, Ventile does a great job no matter the temperature, so is
what I use.

“What about pants layers and sox?”
Tweed breeks from https://www.spencers-trousers.com. So far I’ve not added
anything under or over and only plan on adding fishnet longjohns if needed,
below ˚F. I do add single sock as extra warmth and wind block cod piece at 15˚F
and below.
Socks: Boiled wool extra heavy 3-ply over the knee sock (folded to be under the
knee), requires sizing shoe up 2 sizes. I add a second pair 4-ply ankle sock at
15˚F, good down to zero. Below that, I shift to Sorel Caribou boots with 1-2
pair boiled wool socks.
I add ventile gaters, to just below the knee, for a wind barrier as needed, but
for warmth due to heat retention starting below 20˚F.

Mittens: 3 ply boiled wool glomitt down to 20˚F. Add a 4-ply boiled wool mitt
below that, and an Empire Canvas chopper mitt as needed for wind block/heat
retention.
Wool scarf, blocks wind into shirt and keeps neck warm starting around freezing.
Hat: Walts wool cycling cap to about 25˚F. Add 2-ply down to 10˚F, 4-ply below
that and/or at stops at the top, for descents. Ventile hood if windblock
needed, but that doesn’t happen until below zero as the 4-ply blocks wind very
well and is 2 or three layers thick around the ears/headband area.

The key before fishnet was to wear enough layers to absorb sweat, then change
to dry base layers if stopped, or just don’t stop. Since fishnet, the key is to
manage moisture, and when things get wet it’s not a big deal because I’ll stay
warm even when I stop, and at an extended stop just add more insulative layers
and wind block as needed. It allows me to do extended stops at all
temperatures, which has opened up my riding.

Boiled wool:
https://www.sweaterchalet.com/dachstein-woolwear-boiled-wool-sweaters-mitts-socks-caps-gloves/.
Rick is great to work with. A note on the boiled wool hats: I’ve added a chin
tie to keep them on. People with smaller heads may not have this issue.
Basically a leather shoe lace inside the back headband of the hat, pushed
through at the front of the ears. When tied, it holds the hat snuggly to the
back of my neck and below my ears.

Ventile: https://hilltrek.co.uk
