Re: [RBW] Re: 25th Anniversary Riv

2019-02-09 Thread Leah Peterson
Oh Tom, I thought no one would ever ask! Actually, caveat: This is all in fun.
I don’t want to be telling Grant/Rivendell what to do. Whatever they do will be
good, clean, fun and I am so excited to finally know what it will be. I love my
bike, I love their bikes, and I am a novice who knows NOTHING. But if I was
going to make a Mixte Wish List, here are my respectful and non-bossy thoughts:

1. Fancy Rivendell lugs. I love them - like the ones they put on customs. They
are traditional Rivendell and fitting for an anniversary model. The lugs are
the nod to Rivendell’s beginnings and the evolved geometry is where Rivendell
is now - a summary of 25 years. The the decal can read “One Bike To Rule Them
All.” Or “My Precious” if the former is too lengthy. Or some clever Tolkien
reference...

2. A lower top tube. The TT is not actually that low on the Betz, and I’d
prefer it lower for my golden years. If it was swoopy like the Clementine,
that’s good, too.

3. Take wider tires. Like the Clementine.

4. I want the brake cables strung on the underside of the tubes. I have a nasty
mark where the cable has been mashed into my paint job by the arm of my vehicle
bike rack. It’s an eyesore I see every darn day.

5. The thing I really, really, really want: Sparkly red paint with cream
accents and the Rivendell head badge. You know the kind of red that stops you
in your tracks, turns heads, convinces you you’re 16 and makes people let out a
long, low whistle? THAT red.

I reserve the right to add on later! Does anyone else have these on their wish
lists?

So fun and thanks for asking, Tom! If your wife won’t give you your Valentine’s
bike, maybe you should get an anniversary bike instead. Ha!

Leah,
I think you, as much as anyone here KNOWS the Betty. If the 25th
Anniversary bike will be a mixte, and given the Cheviot is alive and well,
what would *your *mixte design points be that aren't already covered by
your Betty? Or a Cheviot? Or, is your passion based on simply wanting
another, different, "it's Tuesday, I feel like riding X instead of Y" frame
design (like many here, including me!). I think your perspective would be
great. Especially given I have that dang "Sam Blue" Cheviot of my wife's,
starting at me from its shipping box...and I dream of sticking some Rock n'

[RBW] Query for Tig Weld Bar Owners

2019-02-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
How reflect-y is the wavy tig weld in the sun vs. the rest of the bar?

I realize this minutia calibration to a detail you’ve never paid attention to
may be puzzling and hard to answer. Here’s why I ask. Bright, shiny, moving
lights boggle my bludgeoned brain. I shift or cover things that cause bright
spots. I’d rather not do that with the moose bars I’ll likely be buying, so if
they do, I’ll buy filleted bars if possible.

Re: [RBW] Help me build a Clem please!

2019-02-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Welcome, Owen! It’s exciting and full of over-thinking to puzzle out a bike
build, ain’t it? Grin. One of the gifts of this group is the expertice in
various details, but in the end, we each have to figure out what works for us
when the rubber meets the road, the hands the bars, the feet the pedals, the
rear the saddle. Grin.

You’d said: “Also at 5'11" any idea on which stem riser height I should be
looking at?” Rivendell uses threaded 1” (? Confirm that, I may have the detail
wrong? 1.25”?) headsets, so if your question presumes the threadless headsets
you see on most bike, these are different. The height is very adjustable on Riv
stems in a wide range. The stem decisions you’ll have are: 1) road brake levers
(26mm stem) or mountain brake levers (25.?mm diameter stem)? (your bar will
determine this); stem length (if you go 52 Clem, longer stem length most
likely, shorter for the large).

I understand the budget constraint, but if you can, wherever your body meets
the bike, quality matters. Rivendell is great at offering good value parts for
these, including pedals, but it’s worth spending more on bar and saddle once
you have an idea what works for you.

Enjoy the delecious torment of thinking about a bike you don’t yet have! We’ve
all been there, and some of us are always there! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

2019-02-09 Thread tc
Patrick, I'm so happy you like them! Great review. Solid,
confidence-inspiring, the right height and width, great leverage, and
multiple realistic hand positions. Uncanny how a bar+stem that's fixed in
place can be so right for so many situations.

[RBW] Bullmoose Bars Make Brilliant AllWays Adventure Bars

2019-02-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks, Erl and Hugh! Aye, Erl, I bought the last pair from Riv.
https://bluelug.com has them, straight from Japan. Just don’t buy them out
before I can get another pair or two myself! Grin. Actually, I’m going to be
trying the ChocoMoose on my QB, but after loving how these wide bars feel, I’m
wondering if they’ll feel too narrow. I’d like a bit more differentiation
between the Quickbeam and Hunqabeam, and the bars are a great way to do that,
but I need to love them equally, or I’ll go with the Bullmoose.

A far better review than the one I provided over on iBob for my recent
bullmoose adventures, but couldn't agree more with every word you've
written. They are surprising. Never had a flat bar that offered so many
different hand positions. I have now added them to two of my fixed gears
which see a mixture of on and off road use.

Mono-fixed with threadless bullmoose (Lousy workshop photos. While I did
get out for a ride on this one today after adding Compass Rat Trap Pass

Re: [RBW] Help me build a Clem please!

Riv used to list some very affordable build kits that would be really hard to
beat price wise unless you already had a bunch of components.
I suspect everything shy of bars and wheels would fit in the frame box.
It would be worth asking them first since you are already getting a frame.

[RBW] Re: anybody using thermarest cot tent?

2019-02-09 Thread Ron Mc
Hi Mike, sprung for both - with separate coupon buys and my award gift
certificate, cost me $130 total - quite a gift.
It was gorgeous early this week, 72, balmy, light mist and got out on the
greenway

But this weekend is 30 degrees and thunderstorms - a combination I've never
seen, and a good day for a cot-tent smoke test -

there's also a rainfly

Yeah, the cat thinks it's her new travel carrier.

I'm 6'3", 210 lbs, 46L- the 30" x 77" cot fits me exactly right, and the
26" wide would probably not do.
Nice the tent snugly fits the 30"-wide cot, making tie-downs superfluous -
same tent is sold for the 26" x 77" cot.
You can also pick it up and carry it in this configuration.
Cot takes awhile to put up and take down. Tent zings.

Here are both in their carriers, but neither is packed efficiently - I can
squeeze more than 2" out of the tent/fly bag.

The 18" length is fixed by the poles.

With efficient packing, and if light enough to leave behind two of the cot
support poles, you could get all of this into a half-frame bag.

Each item would fit in a half frame bag with room to spare, and both would
fit in a full frame bag with room to pack more.

[RBW] WTT New Sugino XD 40x26 double w/ chainguard for another crankset

2019-02-09 Thread Eric Grim
I bought a Sugino XD wide/low double 40t x 26t crankset with a chainguard
from RBW for the MiT Atlantis I'm building up. 170mm crank arms.
Unfortunately I didn't notice that the five arms of the spider are not
arranged the way the arms are on every other crankset I have: they're
rotated just a little, so that one arm of the spider is in line with (that
is, directly behind) the crank arm.

I hope that makes sense. I fear that it may not. If you look at the crank
page on the Riv website, you'll see what I mean . . . the Silver-brand
cranks have the spider arranged one way, and the Sugino cranks are arranged
another way.

Anyway, the way the Sugino's spider is arranged, the Biopace chainrings I
planned to use won't work; they'll be turned 36-degrees from where they
were designed to be.

I put the cranks on the spindle and finger-tightened the bots, but there
has never been a chain wrapped around the chainrings. (Still need wheels &
brakes before I can ride this bike.) So, "like new"? "As new"? Just
"new"?

So, if any of you has a nice crankset with 110mm and 74mm BCD, and would
like to trade for my cranks, please contact me. I'd like a triple (so I
could swap the outermost chainring for a chainguard). Probably this is a
long-shot, but I just thought I'd ask. I'm willing to pay a little cash if
you think your cranks are worth more than mine.

P.S. Thanks to everyone who suggested ways of finding touch-up paint for
the bike. I bought a little bottle of Atlantis Green from Waterford, and a
little bottle of Testors Russian Naval Interior from that auction site.

The goo contains latex. It also contains solvents that can maintain the
latex suspended or dissolved in liquid form. So, the solvent/carrier can
probably also dissolve/permeate the latex tube. Nick's empirical evidence
is consistent with this scenario. Butyl rubber is resistant to many
organic solvents that damage natural latex. The oozing may well subside
only when the tube is fully destroyed by the sealant.

[RBW] Re: Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2019-02-09 Thread AV
https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/peeking-through-the-knothole/2019-no-3-state-of-the-bunion

In the latest Blahg, Grant again discusses the financial situation. He
lists several options for going forward, which I would summarize as:
continue to try and squeak by, sell the business, give it to employees, or
look for an angel investor.

I'm sure people will tell me I'm wrong, but for what it's worth, I think at
least some of Rivendell's financial problems stem from an awkward pricing
scheme.

On the high end is the AHH, which sells for around custom prices. I would
guess that Riv loses some customers here, because why not buy a made to
measure frame (eg, a Gunnar) instead? On the lower end, the $900 Clem or
Roadini frames sit in a weird spot -- cheaper than a custom but more
expensive than, say, a frame from Soma or Black Mountain. So why buy a Clem
or Roadini, especially if you prefer classic geometry, as many people do?
The lugs? Are lugs really worth losing sales over? Are lugs all that make
Rivendell bikes special? And I have to agree that many of the latest
designs have lost me.

I think it bears repeating that other companies are succeeding by making
Rivendellish bikes for lower prices. For instance, isn't the Black Mountain
Road essentially a TIG welded Rambouillet? Why doesn't Riv offer a line of
lower priced TIG frames? Who wouldn't want to buy a TIG version of, say,
the Legolas or Quickbeam -- same geo, same tire clearances, same practical
features such as rack and fender eyelets, but costing way less? Would it be
watering down Riv too much to offer a TIG frame? I mean, the Roadini has
only a few lugs. Why not go all the way and bring in new customers who
appreciate the kinds of bikes Riv makes but could never afford an Atlantis
or AHH? How is that bad?

Some will object and say, those TIG bikes already exist, go and buy them.
To which I respond: Not exactly. I'm pretty sure I would prefer a Grant
designed TIG frame over a Surly. And I would rather support a smaller,
ethical company like Riv, just as I would rather buy a jacket from
Patagonia than Nike.

I don’t mean to suggest that Grant should start chasing trends or introduce
a carbon bike with disc brakes. But I do think there is a middle approach
that could bring in more sales, expand the customer base, and yet stay true
to the Rivendell philosophy.

And the lugged bikes would still be there, as always.

[RBW] Help me build a Clem please!

2019-02-09 Thread OwenS
Hey everyone, long story short I'm from Australia and after a Riv bike so I
can ditch the lycra and my race bike :) Am looking at the 52cm Clem H in
Green, as it seems like a good all rounder and the most affordable of the
bunch. I can only afford to ship a frameset to Australia so I will need to
build it up myself. It will be cheaper components to begin with and I'll
switch them out as funds allow. I want to build a general commuter and
bikepacking/adventure bike.

Any other Clem H owners out there with a similar use case? Would love to
hear opinions on component choices. Also at 5'11" any idea on which stem
riser height I should be looking at?

Thank you all!

primarily a bad idea to "Rube Goldberg" the mounting post and caliper. I
also equate the sliding disc mounts in this category. Either go for disk

[RBW] Re: Lever effect of stem length et al on steering and handling

2019-02-09 Thread Ron Mc
Think all of us like multiple hand position options on bars, part of it is
comfort, part of it is control, part of it is wind.
As a rule, longer stem and wider bars give you the most control, and you
actually use your arms to steer. In the narrow positions, you steer mostly
with lean and less (if at all) with your arms.
As far as weight on bars, should reserve that for braking, and use core
muscle support for your weight.

[RBW] Re: Cost to have a previously offered model made

2019-02-09 Thread Bob B
I don't know about All Rounders, but last time Hunqs were listed on the
website, I'm about 95% sure it was at $2700.

[RBW] Cost to have a previously offered model made

2019-02-09 Thread tc
Thanks all. Yes, I absolutely wouldn’t think of doing anything without several
conversations with Grant first. I’m just trying to get a ballpark cost from
those who’ve actually done this — just to confirm my fears, er, thoughts.

Also, by posing the question here, it may help others, too. Given the 25th
Anniversary thread, my guess is that others are pondering this very question.

Thanks again -
Tom

[RBW] Re: Cost to have a previously offered model made

2019-02-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Tom,

I second Bill’s advice. I asked Grant if I ordered a custom for my fixed gear
bikepacking, how close would it be to a Boots. He laughed and said: “I wish
everyone who wanted a custom would start by asking me that.” Excepting the
dropout swat to horizontal, 98-100% was his answer. I’m not in a position to
get a custom yet, but I may since the dropout thing couldn’t happen, but I have
every confidence that if I got the Boots he would be exactly right that it is
the bike for me.

With abandon,
Patrick
