Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqapillar fender options

2019-02-27 Thread Patrick Moore
I just asked a similar question on the iBob list. I've got the SKS's too
and the front is way too short. Also 60 mm (actual; in reality, about 60.5
mm) Big Ones.

>From the drawings, the rolled edges of the square 65 mm Sims limits the
interior width to 58 mm, which is considerably narrower than the
edge-to-edge width of the SKSs, and would crowd the 60 actual Big Ones even
more than the SKSs. So, no go.

So I'll add my request to Kurt's: Other options for fattish fenders for 60
mm tires? The Matthews can take close to 70 mm actual width fenders.
There's Kelpie, but big $$$.

Primarily I use Carradice Super C fronts. I've used Karrimors which you
probably won't find. Have a wonderful set of Beckman's but you won't find
those either unless you're lucky. Jandd Mountain and Standard front
panniers. The Mountain panniers are small. The Standards are pretty big but
sloppy if you don't fill them. You really gotta stuff 'em. The Super C's
are a wee bit small too, larger than the Jandd's MTB's I believe. Your
choice of panniers depend on what and how you pack your bike and where
you're going and how long you'll be out. With gargantuan racks like these

I get longish answers from Grant about this, that and the other thing
sometimes; and sometimes not at all. He's made it clear on the Blahg he reads
all the conversational (the only kind I send) email, but can't answer every
one. I try to speak in a "this is what I think" way without asking a question

Will tends to speak in short bursts. I don't find it "curt", it's just the way
he talks electronically. It's fine with me.

[RBW] FS: Nitto, kingcage, microshift, flaps etc.

2019-02-27 Thread Drw
Another round of small stuff

-Nitto saddlebag grip/quick release- mounted and maybe used once. Basically new
- 85$ shipped

-microshift shifters- these came on a set of Paul thumbies. Only friction. Seem
to handle up to 10 speed. Ratchety like silvers. I assume they are off of bar
ends. Should fit Shimano compatible mounts. 25$ shipped because I don’t know
much about them.

-king iris cage- 15$ shipped

-salsa nickless cage -10$ shipped

-Sackville fender flaps- tan, used for a season or so. Dirty on one side but
otherwise really good shape. - 25$ shipped for pair

-rhode gear flickstand- NOS, ATB version specifically for big tires. I hoarded
these for a while. Excellent little thing if you park with a front floppy
load.- 15$ shipped

-skewers- 2 silver rear, Shimano black set. Free

Or take the whole lot for 150$ shipped

That's terrible to hear about curt responses! I've emailed with Roman

[RBW] Re: FS big nitto front rack 34F

2019-02-27 Thread John Bokman
Tom, could you tell me what kind of panniers you used with this rack?
Looking at the triangulation of the rack, I"m wondering if those added
supports might prevent me from mounting my Lone Peak panniers. I can't
adjust the hooks, unlike an ortlieb or some such.
Do you know if this rack was designed to be used with Riv panniers?
Thanks. I like to use a heavy front load on my 32F, and am thinking it's
not so prudent. I also use panniers, so this rack might make sense, if it
can accept my panniers.

I'll update this thread as soon as I find someone who can pack the

[RBW] Re: Rivendell tinkering..

2019-02-27 Thread Craig Montgomery
Owen, Deacon, Kiley,
You bet. The bikes invite "messin' with." I remember reading the early
catalogs where Grant would make suggestions on different ways to set up his
designs. I remember unboxing that brand new '96 All Rounder and thinking
"now what the hell can I do with this?" The bike changed over the years
through the evolution of riding styles, purposes, and age. And it was a lot
of fun, stress relieving, and cheaper than changing bikes. Although I've
had dozens of bikes in my adult life, collecting and riding vintage, the
All Rounder has always been the mainstay, the flagship, and always
malleable.
Here's a few major permutations:

[RBW] Re: Compass Antelope Pass 700 x 55: the fat tire arms race continues

2019-02-27 Thread Ryan M.
I got the Schwalbe G-One Allround 650bx57 tire mounted to Velocity
Cliffhangers to fit in my Appaloosa so I don't see why the Compass Antelope
Pass tires wouldn't.

I have the Antelope Pass tires on my Niner Sir9 right now and they honestly
look a bit thinner than the Schwalbe G-ones. I think they would fit well on
the Appaloosa.

Re: [RBW] Re: Compass Antelope Pass 700 x 55: the fat tire arms race continues

2019-02-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Mark: Thanks for this. It is a bit apples:oranges, but a useful data point
nonetheless. I think at this point my principal interest in the APs is
whether it exhibits the same "floppy" feeling that the 60 mm (700C) Big
Ones do, even at what for such a fat tire is pavement pressure -- 26+ under
my 175. Boblist scuttlebutt (was it on the Bob or o this list) is that the
BO's tread tends to "stick" to the pavement in turns; minimally, but enough
to notice. It's not horrible, but it means that the ride is less than Riv
quality. As far as cushion, perceived rolling resistance, and weight, I am
more than happy with the ultra light BO model.

As with your experience with the APs, the BOs feel as fast on pavement as
the Elk Passes, at least when I am riding these last on my 2003 Riv.

[RBW] Re: No response from Riv ...

2019-02-27 Thread Ash
Patrick,

There seems to be a problem with Will's email system. Better to call him.

Yesterday I was at Rivendell HQ to pick up my new Appaloosa frame. I
mentioned to Will about my emails to him over last few months to which I
had not received response. He looked up the outbox on his laptop and I
could see that he had indeed responded to all of my queries. There's
nothing from Will in my Gmail. It is a mystery. This's something for Riv
to investigate with their business email provider.

Re: [RBW] 1996 Bicycle Guide Steel Tubing Throwdown

2019-02-27 Thread John McBurney
In the new book Japanese Steel there is a section on tubing. It seems tat
even as Japanese Steel like Tange Prestige and higher end Ishiwata steels
were eclipsing Columbus and Reynolds, the branding was more at the level of
the frame maker. It was also common to mix and match tubes.

https://www.rizzoliusa.com/book/9780847861705/

Since Grant had his association with Bridgestone I assume some of the
practices carried over. Rivendell gets top billing and doesn’t share the
spotlight with the tube maker.

[RBW] SKS fenders secu clips

2019-02-27 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
You've gotta push harder than you think you'd need to. To give yourself a
little more leverage you could sandwich the stays with a couple wood blocks and
a clamp, but I think you can do it with the power of will.
Good luck!

It is possible the clips are sacrificial and must be replaced. If you look

Hello all,

I have SKS fenders on a Clementine and the front fender has the plastic
security clips holding the struts to the fork braze on. A branch jumped up
between the tire and struts and the clip did just the right thing. However,
now I can't get the clips to snap on to the struts again. How do I apply
enough pressure on the clips to make them hold on the struts? Thanks for
any ideas.

[RBW] Re: Spare Nitto Parts?

2019-02-27 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
If it is the back half of the aluminum clamp that is stripped, you can
drill and rethread it. I stripped those threads on the GAP/C&O Canal trail
but repaired it later. I think that I went from the original 6mm bolt to an
8mm (or 8 to 10mm). I can check it out if you want to know for sure.
The tap may cost more than the part, if it is available separately.
