[RBW] Re: Smaller tires on Cliffhanger rims? Snoqualmie (44mm) or small as 38mm? Sam Hillborne 700c

2019-09-27 Thread Ed Carolipio
I ran 650b Cliffhangers with 43mm Panaracer Gravel King slicks for a bit on
an AHH. No issues, but I wouldn't be confident going with anything skinnier.

On the wheelset, I personally prefer handbuilt wheelsets but I would have
no heatburn running Deores with straight gauge spokes. I'd probably grease
and adjust the hubs before first use, and de-tension/re-tension the machine
built wheel.

Re: [RBW] ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread John McBurney
In the bright daylight neon clothing is helpful. I have a very lightweight
Descent nylon neon wind vest made for runners that I wear during hot
weather. During fall and spring I like my Sugoi reflective and convertible
jacket-vest. It’s neon when it’s daylight, but covers your torso in
reflective dots when lights hit it in the dark. It’s too warm for hot
weather but since the sleeves attach with magnets it’s pretty versatile.
Waterproof but not for a long downpour.

My go to for winter all conditions is a Showers Pass Club Visible jacket
and Refuge Pants. Neon. waterproof. Wind proof. Lots of reflection.

One thing to consider is movement. Wheel light or good reflectors do this
in the dark. I like Flektr wheel reflectors. I backed their indie go go
campaign last year and supported them again this year.

I thank you for your consideration for others, Eric. In NYC, most bike
lights that I see are mounted on temporary mounts (because you have to take
them off so they don't get stolen), and in my experience driving all over
the country, many, many motorists do not have their headlights focused
properly.

A properly designed light, like an Edelux, has a “cutoff” beam like the one on
your car or truck. The light is focused downward on the road, where it needs to
be.

“Blinding” lights tend to have a comical pattern like a flashlight. The light
shines up and down equally, creating a hazard for oncoming bikes (and,
sometimes) vehicles.

I use only focused lights on my randonneuring bikes. In addition to being more
respectful of others, they’re more efficient because you’re not expending
effort to light up the sky.

[RBW] Re: Make my AHH look less tempting!

2019-09-27 Thread Adam Leibow
i lock up all my rivendells all over san francisco, and it might be safe to
say san francisco is worse than the town in the UK for bike theft. & i have
never had a bike stolen (i even went to UCSB). i attribute this to a couple
of factors:
- i always lock my bike in a bright prominent area with a lot of foot
traffic (nearby a hotel main entrance, for example). bonus points if you
can see your bike from wherever it is you'll be going.
- i go crazy overboard on locks. u lock for the frame, second u lock/abus
bordo for the front wheel, small abus chain lock through saddle and rear
wheel. remove all bags.
- always bring bike inside whenever possible.

some ideas for making the bike look shittier than it is:
- plastic grocery bag wrapped around saddle
- ratty/worn/stained bar tape (un-shellacked cloth tape is great for this
and it's nice beausage)
- minimize polished parts, increase worn parts (rusty steel quill stem?)
- if drop or albastache bars, use non-aero brake levers
- cleverly placed sticker here or there (decrease pristine factor)

hope this helps

Franklyn, my advice to the young lady weighed heavily towards the 'no flats'
side, which basically started and ended with "get Big Bens, they'll work." She
rides with the kids back and forth to school every day and REALLY can't afford
many road side repairs, so I think this was the way to go.

Unless you're in the country without street lights, Why would someone ride
with a super-high lumens headlight? I argued this with a fellow cyclist
friend who was bragging that his headlight is "blinding." To what purpose?!
If you must, point it angled downward so you can see potholes or the road.
I used to come up over the Manhattan Bridge and get temporarily
blinded--literally--by cyclists with insane front lights. And it goes
without saying that if you're in a protected bike lane (like on the
Manhattan Bridge) you can at least temporarily turn it off. I really don't
get it.
Even in a car I have trouble with other vehicles with the insanely bright
LED headlights. They effectively wash out my entire rear-view mirror
because the contrast ratio between them and the rest of the scene behind me
is 100:1.

[RBW] Re: ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread Jack K
Somewhere in the cycling archive that used to be my garage I have a new
mesh safety vest I ordered, but never used, that I'd be happy to pass on to
someone who can use it for the cost of shipping. I ordered this hi-vis
one-size-fits-most safety vest several years ago from Nashbar, but
discovered when it arrived that I'm smaller than the one size it mostly
fits. Still in it's package, but I'd have to dig around for it.
"Construction worker style" and pretty bulky over a cycling jersey on my
5'7" frame, but if you're bigger or riding in street clothes or want
maximum real estate devoted to retina searing safety yellow then this may
work better for you than it did for me.

Someone mentioned the reflective safety triangles as a "game changer" and
I'll second that! The common Aardvark brand one could use a bit more velcro
strappage to keep it from flopping around, but is extremely visible. This
thing:

Definitely don't uglify it. I mean, half of what you pay for in a Rivendell

most people only think carbon fiber drop bar bikes and full sus. mtbs are

Re: [RBW] ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
If you are only talking about daylight visibility, then I agree with the
construction worker vest. You don't even need one that zips up. You can
use the one you pull over your head and has no sides--the ones that buckle
on the sides stay in place pretty well. dontgethit.com has some selections
that work well. I got the reflective collars for my kids, but they are
small for adults.

The fluorescent colors do help. People have told me that my fluorescent
colored helmet can be seen from very far away, so if you wear a helmet a
hi-vis one would be recommended. Maybe you can change your socks at work,
but if you get super hi vis ankle length socks, then you see them moving up
and down during the day and they can be seen from quite far away too (out
here you get these all black wearing riders with bright pink or yellow
socks, or sometimes fluorescent shoe covers--all you see is their ankle or
foot moving around). If I am wearing long pants, then I tuck my pants into
my socks. It helps keep them out of the chain and makes my beautiful socks
visible. Maybe not fashionable, but we're trying not to get hit. At
night, I definitely use the ankle bands to keep my pants tucked close--Riv
ones are the best!

Fluorescent clothes emit light (that is what fluorescence is). That is why
they seem unnaturally bright. I don't use blinking lights--perhaps because
I am too lazy to use battery powered lights. My dynamo front and rear are
always on, and my fluorescent clothes are quite easily seen (at least I've
been told) even in the shade--except for when the sun is coming directly in
the eyes, in which case seeing anything can be difficult!

--Riding style: don't zig in and out of the parked cars. If there is a big
gap you can go in to the parked car space for others to pass, but quickly
take a line that will get wide of the parked cars slowly and predictably,
so the cars know you are going to be in that space soon. Use a rearview
mirror to see behind you and plan appropriately.

Don't hug the cars on the side of the road. If you are riding in the door
zone, then if a person opens the car door on you, then you will get
"doored" and crash. Also it is harder to see you when you blend in with
the parked cars. On roads with two lanes in the same direction with no
bike lane and moderate speed traffic, I take the lane and ride in the
middle of the lane. This is especially important when it is not safe for
two cars, you and a parked car all lined up side by side. If you take the
lane, then ride like a car. Don't go around the cars at a stoplight, just
to have them have to figure out how to pass you and then you have to work
your way back into your own lane. If you keep your spot in the line, then
the cars will respect your position and not get as annoyed with you.

The safety triangles that Riv sells are really good. I mounted one on the
back of my seat and did notice a significant improvement in space given to
me by cars.

--Just my general commuting tips--that will generally make you much more
visible, but not necessarily directed at the original poster.

Toshi

Good stuff here, per the usual. Indeed, I am inquiring generally about
daylight conditions, but fall is here, and winter not far behind!

Gotta say I totally forgot about the yellow ankle band! I have two of the
high quality units that do indeed stick out like a flag. I've used them
during winter commuting and on long rides where I am in and out of tree
shadow, I think the circular motion of something bright yellow must help
with visibility.

I also have suffered behind fellow riders at night that are running
NASA-grade blinky lights. My current setup is the Riv-approved Secula that
mounts on the seat stay. Only one mode (steady on) and one brightness (not
that bright). I've become so fond of the dyno setup with 'always on' lights
and never a thought to charge or batteries.

Evening all-

I'm interested in some group brainstorming. I recently moved to a university
area where I'm told there is a high incidence of bike theft. (Granted this is a
town in the UK and I just move here from Philadelphia, so perhaps I should take
that claim with a grain of salt). Nevertheless, my AHH will shortly arrive here

I'm a firm believer in riding my 'good bikes' anywhere and everywhere, but I
don't want to tempt fate. So I'm looking for ideas: how could I make my Hilsen
look less desirable to opporunistic British bike thrives? It's brown and has
albatross bars so it already looks a bit like an old British beater to the
uninformed. But all brainstorming welcome! I was thinking lots of stickers and
a bit of thoughtfully-smeared dirt.

Thanks in advance!

[RBW] Make my AHH look less tempting!

2019-09-27 Thread Eric Karnes
Evening all-

I'm interested in some group brainstorming. I recently moved to a university
area where I'm told there is a high incidence of bike theft. (Granted this is a
town in the UK and I just move here from Philadelphia, so perhaps I should take
that claim with a grain of salt). Nevertheless, my AHH will shortly arrive here
via Bikeflights.

Eric

[RBW] Re: ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread PaulS
Some of the responses above seem to reference dark/night-time riding. I
thought the question was regarding daylight hours.

For me, from what I've observed both on the bike and driving, is that
cyclists' apparel does not do anything during daylight hours. Light,
reflective, dark, orange, etc.---once the cyclist rides under the shadow of
a tree, building, etc., they "disappear". Reflective gear doesn't work,
since half the cars have their lights off and there is too much ambient
light. In my opinion, a light emitting source is needed.

Bright rear AND front lights are a must. BLINKING mode, not constant on,
got my attention the most. Maybe even two lights. Don't get a minimalist
Knog or the likes. I can barely see those at night time, let alone during
the day. I use PDW Radbot and one of their other taillights (can't
remember the name), and Lezyne headlight (~1200 lumens). Very bright and
visible in full daylight.

Treefort bikes:

$110 for front:
https://www.treefortbikes.com/Quality-Wheels-Front-Wheel-Clydesdale-XL-Rim-Brake-700c

The front seems to be available everywhere else for $125.

Limitations on this wheelset are it's Deore hubs (not LX T670, not XT
T780), straight gauge spokes, and is machine built. Adds some weight and
apparently the seals on the deore hubs are not as good, but still good.

[RBW] ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread Mark Roland
I commute in a construction worker style safety vest bright yellow with big
reflective silver stripes. Try to find one with a good zipper, not velcro
closures. These come in a variety of weights, including mesh. Google
construction safety vest and you'll get a million different options and price
ranges.

I also have a dayglow yellow pants band, again with reflective silver. And I
use the orange and yellow safety triangle. Also run a dyno headlight set up,
and/or a Cygo-lite with a flashing daylight LED mode (I never use the flash
mode at night.) I imagine I can tell a difference in the willingness of cars to
pull out in front of me when I have the light versus when I don't.

Re: [RBW] ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Neil:

Famous sag driver Lee Mitchell, who spent countless (thousands?) of hours
following cyclists day and night, used to say that the single most effective
piece of reflective gear is an ankle band. The reflectivity and the motion
capture a driver’s attention and immediately say, “This is a bicycle.” Lee
would advise that ankle bands work better than vests or taillights.

My favorite is this one from Rivendell Bicycle Works:
https://www.rivbike.com/products/ankle-reflector-rar

The two ends of the band attach to each other in a way that they create a
“flag” that sticks out to the side for more visibility.

And, SINCE YOU ASKED, please give me a second to step on my soapbox and say a
word or two about superbright taillights: THEY SUCK!! Here in the US, we’ve
gotten caught up in a taillight arms race, in which rear-facing lights are now
as bright as front-facing lights were just a few years ago. A bike with a
superbright taillight is impossible to ride behind—all you can see is a big red
glow in front of you. This forces the poor following rider to ride out to the
side (not safe) or far back (not very sociable, and makes drafting impossible)
or out ahead of the rider with the superbright light (not very fair to the
rider who’s just trying not to be blinded).

Lights this bright aren’t needed. Really, you don’t need much light to be
visible from pretty far away on a dark road. I note that when I was riding PBP
this year, the vast majority of cyclists (from outside the US) had reasonably
bright taillights. The arms race hasn’t taken hold over there … yet.

And don’t get me started on riders whose taillights are pointing upward, rather
than straight back, making them more effective at blinding fellow riders and
less visible to motorists.

2019-09-27 Thread esoterica etc

Abe,

Earlier this year, I had this very same question, albeit for 650b Cliffhangers
instead of your 700c ones. I was wanting to find out what Velocity’s opinion
was on running narrower tires outside of the “optimum range”- specifically,
from 43mm down to 38mm. I contacted them and here’s their response:

“Hello Mark,

You might be ok with a 43mm, taking it down to 38 is probably too risky. The
skinnier you go, the greater the chance of a tire blow off. Running with tubes
is more secure than without, but I can’t really say what the limits are. Some
tires fit tighter than others so there is no hard and fast rule.”

FWIW, I ended up getting a different, narrower wheelset in which 38-44mm was in
the “optimum range”.

[RBW] FS: 59cm MIT Atlantis Frame/Fork/Headset

2019-09-27 Thread Adam Leibow
Hello All,

Catch & release Atlantis frameset for sale. I got this from clayton.sf to
try it out since it was a good deal. I like it a lot but I think I'm more
married to keeping my Clem L as my offroad shredder Rivendell.

Asking $1100 (same price Clayton.SF asked). I will favor a local sale in
San Francisco, but I'm willing to ship this frameset if you let me take
some time to find a box and package it properly.

Here is a picture of it from last weekend:

Re: [RBW] Re: Tires for Clementine

2019-09-27 Thread REC (Roberta)
I have some Kenda tires (not sure which ones) on my Joe Appaloosa. I think
they are 45 wide. I pump them to 65 ( I think that is the max) and don't
pump them up again until they get that squishy feeling, then pump them up
again. I do like them a touch less than the max, but much more than
squishy. I'm not sure what pressure that is. Still fairly firm though for
me.

I can give you one good reason (besides comfort) why you might not
want to inflate wide tires to max pressure unless you've very heavy.
When you pump a wide tire up to high pressure it can become very
bouncy with a considerable rebound on hard impacts, a bit like a
basketball. That can, in some circumstances, snatch the handlebars
right out of your hands.  It happened to me, and I crashed as a
result, breaking my collar bone.  I'm not talking here about the
biopace-like surging you might get at very low pressure, where you
can feel the bike squishing the tires down on each pedal downstroke,
but rather the SPROING bounce you get when you throw a basketball
down onto the pavement.

Your "bones rattling" comment reminds me of a time at Bike Virginia,
back when they still had dinner put on by a community organization.
I was standing in line waiting for them to open, and couldn't help
overhearing the guy in front of me discussing tire pressure with his
friends.  He looked a bit like a football player - large, obviously
over 250 lb.  He was from Virginia Beach, and was talking about how
much he enjoyed going downhill on "the bridge" -- evidently, the only
hill in town -- on his 19mm tires inflated to 150 psi.  "Rock hard,"
he said, and at 30 mph the bike vibrated so much he said "it /really/
felt fast!"

It is true you don't get the same super cushy ride benefit from lower
tire pressure with chunky, rigid-sidewall tires as you do with supple
tires with flexible sidewalls, but there's still a benefit to having
your tires as the proper pressure for your weight.  At just under
100kg I'm well over the Clydesdale line and there are very few tires
that I need to inflate to the "max pressure".  And I'll bet you a
chocolate milkshake I weigh a lot more than you do.

big, wide paths and few if any pedestrians, we stay on concrete. See my

[RBW] Smaller tires on Cliffhanger rims? Snoqualmie (44mm) or small as 38mm? Sam Hillborne 700c

2019-09-27 Thread Pancake
*Summary*: plan to switch to tubeless setup, but how small a tire is safe /
wise on a 700c Velocity Cliffhanger rim? Snoqualmie (44mm) should be fine,
but can I use even smaller tires if I want later?

*Details: *
Cliffhangers are tubeless compatible, 25mm internal and 30mm external width
rims. Basically a wider, tubeless ready version of the Atlas rims I have
now.

Velocity says the
optimal tire width for Cliffhanger rims in 700c is 45mm - 65mm. I figure my
current Snoqualmie tires will work fine, but if I want to slap on fenders
someday I would need to use 40mm tires, maybe 38mm.

Someone posted that they comfortably ran 40mm tires on Cliffhangers, they
even suggested it added to the "supple" feel of the ride. *Is 40mm as low
as you would consider for these rims, or would 38mm be reasonable? *

Why tubeless? 6 flats in a month (around 250 miles) from glass and
goatheads plus a couple pinch flats. Twice got two flats on the same short
ride. Not something stuck in the tire, I found a new thorn or glass shard
every time (or the large cut from pinch flats). That pushed me over the
tubeless edge and I'm looking to buy a tubeless wheelset. I currently have
Atlas rims and Snoqualmie 44mm tires on my fenderless Sam Hillborne. 230
pound rider with mostly roads but plenty of random gravel and some slow
single track thrown in.

Planning on XT hubs, DT Swiss double butted spokes, Cliffhanger rims, brass
DT nipples, (wheelset built for $375) and Snoqualmie Pass tires. Eventually
this wheelset could make it to my Cheviot if the versatile Sam it switched
around one day, but the Cheviot rides nicely now with Atlas rims and a
dynamo hub and Basketball tires as my daily commuter.

Alternatively, I can get Cliffhanger rims, straight DT spokes, and Deore
hubs wheelset machine built for $255 shipped is someone wants to convince
me that the Deore hubs are good enough and the straight spokes are fine for
a $120 savings.

Thanks for your suggestions and advice in advance,

Abe in Napa with too many flats

[RBW] Re: Recommended Painters in Eastern US

2019-09-27 Thread Touriste-Routier
The Color Factory in Waretown, NJ does inexpensive paint jobs. I'd call
them C+ grade (If Joe Bell is A+); not great on detail work (like filling
in lug panels), but you can get something stripped. blasted, painted 1
color, decaled and clear coated for ca $200 (not including the decals).
This is less than many charge for powder coat. Paint will be thick, but it
passes the 5 foot test.

For a much better paint job try Franklin Frames in OH. You'll pay more,
but the detail work and overall quality is better.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tires for Clementine

2019-09-27 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Alright, I’m just catching up since I had an event that went late into last
night. I have opened the proverbial can of worms here. I was supposed to say,
“Please figure out this tire problem. Tell me what to get and how to make the
black speckles stop.” and you were supposed to say, “1. Do this. And 2. Do
that.” And then problem solved, right?!

I might be more conflicted than when I started regarding tires, but I DID order
the Kool Stop brakes and will have those installed. I’m pretty sure that will
stop the black speckling issue. As for tires, I know some have been ok with the
Kendas and like how they keep the bike from taking itself too seriously
(looks-wise) but I am going to switch them out. The Clementine feels, even on
flat land, a big sluggish. I rarely shifted on my Betz but I need to on the
Clementine, like the bike is always in a gear that’s a little too hard. I want
to see if better tires would help that.

So, in light of that, do we think Schwalbe Big Bens in 50 will be the ticket?

I can give you one good reason (besides comfort) why you might not want to
inflate wide tires to max pressure unless you've very heavy. When you pump
a wide tire up to high pressure it can become very bouncy with a
considerable rebound on hard impacts, a bit like a basketball. That can, in
some circumstances, snatch the handlebars right out of your hands. It
happened to me, and I crashed as a result, breaking my collar bone. I'm
not talking here about the biopace-like surging you might get at very low
pressure, where you can feel the bike squishing the tires down on each
pedal downstroke, but rather the SPROING bounce you get when you throw a
basketball down onto the pavement.

Your "bones rattling" comment reminds me of a time at Bike Virginia, back
when they still had dinner put on by a community organization. I was
standing in line waiting for them to open, and couldn't help overhearing
the guy in front of me discussing tire pressure with his friends. He
looked a bit like a football player - large, obviously over 250 lb. He was
from Virginia Beach, and was talking about how much he enjoyed going
downhill on "the bridge" -- evidently, the only hill in town -- on his 19mm
tires inflated to 150 psi. "Rock hard," he said, and at 30 mph the bike
vibrated so much he said "it *really* felt fast!"

It is true you don't get the same super cushy ride benefit from lower tire
pressure with chunky, rigid-sidewall tires as you do with supple tires with
flexible sidewalls, but there's still a benefit to having your tires as the
proper pressure for your weight. At just under 100kg I'm well over the
Clydesdale line and there are very few tires that I need to inflate to the
"max pressure". And I'll bet you a chocolate milkshake I weigh a lot more
than you do.

I have to agree with the above sentiment about tires. While some Compass tires
would certainly ride much better; I kinda felt like putting super nice tires on
went against the whole vibe of the bike. I have a Schwalbe on the back of mine,
but it looks exactly like the Kendas.
For the same reason I resisted the urge to put fancy Nitto racks on mine and
it's got chunky BMX grips

[RBW] Roadeos with 32mm tires and fenders

2019-09-27 Thread Bill Lindsay
My Roadeo is a very early one. I’m running Stampede Pass ELs on HED 23mm rims
(outside width). With that setup the tires are 32.2mm by my reckoning.

I really like the clearances to the brake calipers with this setup without
fenders. The smallest gap at any point to the brake caliper is about 6mm and
that spot is in back. I don’t consider that gap to be sufficient to fit a
fender through. If I ever run fenders on my Roadeo it will be with narrower
tires.

[RBW] Re: Roadeos with 32mm tires and fenders

2019-09-27 Thread ascpgh
Like Patrick, not a Roadeo, but a first iteration Rambouillet: Stampede
Pass 32s (31 actual) under Honjo H-50 fenders.

57mm max reach Shimano BR-600R calipers replaced with center mount Paul
Racers to overcome closing of clearance around fenders when braking.
Initial Honjo H-27 fenders (necessary to fit the calipers) were
realistically too small for 32mm labled tires. Correct for 32mm tire H-50s
were able to fit the tight rear end and be installed appropriately under
the Paul calipers.

The Shimano caliper's asymmetric design caused the back arm (pivoted on
center) to contact the rear fender under use, the front arm with its off
center (outboard) pivot was fine. The Paul Racer dual pivot is symmetric
and the arms' clearance of the fender/tire increases under use. A big fix
in a small box.

Yeah ! It's funny how all so-called dis-ease with not just tires, but
anything and everything, is a *comparison*. The thing is though, the
present is incomparable. No matter how or what or where or who or how
you're riding, for example,, you can't make it any faster or slower or
better or worse in any way, you cannot change the present being, It always
is presently Being , always on time, never late, early, fast or slow .
immeasurable as there isn't anything to/from/as which to compare. I'm
not saying anything that isn't inherently known and living this is
appreciation for and as LIFE BEING !
