Re: [RBW] Let me introduce my new friend, Sam, properly

2019-11-22 Thread Jason Fuller
You are correct, I had not seen them, and thank you for sharing! I love
them both. I'm a big fan of 26" wheels, partly because of how nimble they
feel, and partly because I hate toe overlap and headtubes shorter than
~135mm.

The XO size I have is a 52 seat tube, 55 top tube. It fits great but since
I like the flats on my drops to be around parallel if not a smidge higher
than my saddle, I would do better with a taller frame if I wanted the level
top tube.

I still think the "fistful of seatpost" and level, high top tube approach
has its place for flex characteristics, but it's not ideal for fit or
standover to be sure

Re: [RBW] Let me introduce my new friend, Sam, properly

2019-11-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Now, that is very nice! Thanks for the photo.

I'd guess that yours, like mine, is a 55?

Your chainrings are far bigger than any I installed. But I did hit 48 mph
chasing and matching pace with a Range Rover at the bottom of a steep, 1/2
mile hill in 98 gear inch top gear (48 X 12 X 24.5"). (Back when I was a
sprightly 40-something.)

In fall 1994, I called Riv and asked Grant to make me a road bike that rode
"at least as well" as that '92 XO-1. He said, "Oh, it'll be a lot better."
And it was; Waterford, built around the contemporary AllRounder model, but
with road tubing and lugs. 73* parallel, 42.5 cm stays, *tout *753 except
for 531 fork; 54 c-c IIRC -- after I'd built it and ridden it and liked it,
I told Grant, "I'm going to let others know about his!" He said, "Don't you
dare!" -- because he was emphasizing "fistfull of seatpost" sizing back
then. My fistfull of seatpost, level-top-tube sizing is 60 X 56/57, c-c.

The 2 of 3 customs that I've kept, the 1999 and 2003 (the only difference
is that the '99 is 57 c-c, the '03 is 58, both sloping tts), were one step
forward from the 1994, and both are my beau ideals or Platonic archetypes
or airey castles of bike fit and handling: slacker head, longer chainstays;
just the perfect combination of straigh line stability and nimble turn-in.
All built for 559 or 571 wheels.

[RBW] Cycling pants

2019-11-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Ever since I saw a drawing of a very elegant pair of full-length wool
cycling trousers in an old (~1971) cycling book, I've wanted a similar
pair. Today I just picked up my own pair from the tailor, who took a very
nice and comfortable pair of mid-weight, charcoal grey Brooks Brothers
pants that I've owned for years but rarely worn and added lightweight,
interior, wind-blocking linings in the legs, a heavier, outside
saddle-protecting lining in the seat, and pegged the legs with zippers.
*Very* nice looking and, more to the point, *very* comfortable, since the
dress pant cut (these pants pre-date the hipster cut but post-date 1980s
baggies; trim but no binding) is just right for cycling, roomy but no
flapping, and *cut high enough in the waist!* -- my personal bete noir.

$99 including tax; he said he'd charge about $175 for making a pair from
scratch, + material.

I've not yet ridden in them, but since I've ridden in dress pants knickers
for years, I know they'll be comfortable, and the saddle reinforcement will
solve the wear problem -- not that it's a huge problem, IME.

I've left a mid-weight pair of dress flannels, already cut to +6 or so
knicker length, for similar treatment.

In contrast, the Endura riding pants I bought a few years ago, as a design
for cycling that had street pants construction with zip fly, side and rear
pockets, belt loops -- required $100 worth of alteration each to be even
moderately comfortable, and they're still too low in the waist. They may go
on sale shortly.

[RBW] Re: FS: 58cm Toyo Atlantis, partial build

2019-11-22 Thread Gabriel Bruguier
Hey Jonathan! The first is a Surly Big Fat Dummy, which I got used
earlier this month. (Its pretty much the stock 26 version here
, with an upgrade to lighter
tires.) It is my first foray into fatbiking, and has been a very
interesting learning experience. I got it as an upgrade to my Xtracycle
Free Radical, which was a bit too wobbly under even a modest load for me.
What's it like to ride? Its actually super smooth and handles pretty
normal. But you definitely are reminded of the weight on the hills. Most
importantly for me, it is stiff and handles a load well. So far the most
I've carried is around 60lbs, and it handled it like a champ.

The second is a Steve Potts Trail Bike
, Mk
II. The new version is like the one he took to NAHBS 2019, featured here
, which has
changes to the headset, disc tab, and rack braze ons. I'll take delivery
hopefully at the end of the month! PM if you're interested in the build
list.

Friends - if you aren’t on Instagram you should join us there, we have a ton of

Re: [RBW] Let me introduce my new friend, Sam, properly

2019-11-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Note that the Elk Passes are really featherweights: I weighed one new
sample at ~175 grams, another at ~180. I use them with the lightest 23 mm
tubes I can find, *with sealant* in goathead country; even on firm dirt;
wonderful tires. Note that I expect only 1,500 trouble free miles out of a
rear installed new, though.

I used 559 X 32 Paselas -- non-Tourguard -- for commuting for several
years, and there is no comparison. That Pasela is better than many
alternatives, but (1) they are surprisingly delicate: I shaved tread off
once by a skid, and several times had the sidewalls crack, and (2) they had
a very small pressure range between bouncy and harsh; and, lastly, they
were quite prone to thorn punctures -- when I was commuting 30-40 miles a
day 3 or 4 times a week, I'd fix at least 4-5 flats a week on just those
wheels. The 559 X 32 actual Kojak rolled as well while being far more
sturdy and resisting thorns better.

Judging things by the usual test -- over a long period, does this tire
encourage your to use a higher gear in given conditions -- the EPs are
worth at least a couple of gear inches over the Kojaks and Paselas, and I
"feel" that they also roll better than the 559 X 23 Pro Races and Grands
Prix I used on another bike -- it has been several years since I used
these, so the models may have changed.

Please post a photo of your '92 XO-1. I have fond memories of mine, though
all my Riv Roads have been improvements. I first built my XO up as a
gofast, with 48/38/26 X 12-19 7 speed triple, 370 gram "semi-aero" rims
(purple!) shod with the then-available 559 X 23 mm Specialized Turbo (a
very nice tire, and very smooth for its narrow width!), an ineffably nice
looking Grafton Superlight crank, oh, and drop bar Gripshift! I did some of
my modest personal bests on that. After I got my first Riv Road in early
1995, the XO was devolved to commuting duties with 46/36/24 X 13-21, and a
26.4 mm Cinelli Giro d'Italia stuffed into 25.4 mm Tioga T Bone stem, bar

Re: [RBW] Re: There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-11-22 Thread Joyce Swanson
Leah, yes I’m in the Clem Club! It’s dark green and though I would have
preferred silver or that dreamy blue, I’m embracing the color and just
enjoying the ride so much it really doesn’t matter. I once called
Rivendell to see if I could get a Clementine sticker for it, but no luck.
I’d LOVE to have it say Clementine on one side. Oh well.

What I like about Selle Anatomica is it’s the only saddle after trying oh,
so many, that didn’t hurt my “girl parts.” (Well, that was personal!) Even
the Terry saddles with the cut out didn’t work for me. If you like Brooks,
that’s good! I can hardly wait to see your Clem with your new one.

Keep on writing and riding; I always enjoy your creative posts. Every time
I read the title of this one I hear a song. “I met him on a Monday and my
heart stood still. Da doo ron ron ron, da doo ron ron. Somebody told me
that his name was Bill...” (no doubt the song writers didn’t have a new
bike in mind, but it works for me: ”Yeah, Clem caught caught my eye. Yes,
but my oh my!”)

Hi all,

Thanks, Bill, Eric and Rick for your thoughts and suggestions! It is
beautiful country up there. We took Howell Mtn Road up towards Pope Valley,
but had to turn around as we ran out of time due to breaking camp a lot
later in the morning than we had planned. Not a bad thing as we were
enjoying the camping at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park.

But, I plan to return to do that loop.

[RBW] Choco moose or bull moose?

2019-11-22 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Both!

One day I may try to complete the ‘moose trio with a 58cm Bosco-moose, but it’s
not a priority right now. Earlier this season I swapped a bullmoose onto my
65cm Clem H after previously trying the Chocomoose. I actually like both but
find the width/flare of the bullmoose better for my mixed terrain rides on the
Clem and moved the Chocomoose over to a more pavement oriented single speed.
My Clem came stock with a standard 55cm Bosco Cromo bar which I ended up
trading away for a 660 Jones riser loop bar. I liked this layout/width better
and that helped inform my eventual bullmoose acquisition when I finally decided
to eliminate the quill-threadless adapter I used with the 31.8 Jones bar.

JAS,

Thanks so much for the note! You ride a Clem too? I knew you were good people.

I, too, have learned so much from this conversation; I was so frustrated and
felt stuck in the fender situation, and now it’s solved and I am relieved. Even
better is that it has been so *enjoyable*; I really wish we were all doing this
over coffee.

I’ve seen the Selle Atomica saddles; I had Brooks first and haven’t had fit
issues, so I’ve not given a lot of thought to the Selle Atomicas. What do you
prefer about them?

I’m glad you think the wavy silver fenders and I are going to get along -
“unique, sparkly and strong” is high praise, indeed! Thank you. 

[RBW] Choco moose or bull moose?

2019-11-22 Thread 'Keith Swanson' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks for everyone's thoughts on the choco bar vs choco moose. Has anyone
used both the bull moose and choco moose? I have bosco bars on my Clem L
and am thinking of what to put on an Appaloosa. I like more a more upright
position than drop bars but would like something less so than the bosco.

Re: [RBW] Let me introduce my new friend, Sam, properly

2019-11-22 Thread Christopher Cote
Thanks. I assumed that the 55cm Sam was my size, but my saddle height has been
creeping down over the past few years, and I run it around 72cm now. Your
saddle height isn't much lower than mine, and it looks like you can get the
bars at saddle height without an unreasonable amount of stem quill showing.
That opens the possibility of 650b for me.

If you love the Ergon grips and your brown or honey saddle as much as I like

20% off while their sale is going on. I have that set up on a Brompton and
really like it. As for fenders, I had a sett of Honjos and gave them away. I
ride a gravel path a lot and the noise of the gravel bouncing around in the
fenders drove me batty. Replaced them with SKS from Riv. I thought they were
much quieter just not as nice looking.

2019-11-22 Thread John McClusky
I’ve got several years on my older, canti Sam and can’t imagine ever giving it
up. I’m always reminded that it’s the best bike I’ve ever owned every time I
ride it. Do yourself a favor. Get a second wheelset. Swapouts are a breeze.
Takes me very little time to swap from road Sam to dirt Sam. Fenders add a
little challenge.

Enjoy the ride for many years to come.

Re: [RBW] Re: There’s a new man in my life, and his name is Clem

2019-11-22 Thread JAS
Thanks for the conversation, Leah. I am learning a lot by reading the advice
and experience from other posters. Though I might be repeating what you’ve
already heard from others, here’s my take on your questions:
1. I agree with the others; falls from fender jams are unlikely in your riding
conditions. I live in the PNW and use fenders all the time. My usual Clem
ride (with plastic fenders) is on a dirt trail that is strewn with sticks,
leaves, and blackberry vines. Once in a while a leaf gets stuck, but I’ve
never had a jam of any kind that caused a sudden halt.
2. I love the Selle Anatomical saddles; I’ve tried many over the years and
this was the first one that is entirely comfortable. I have the one with the
center cut on all of my bikes and I’m happy with black. They have black with
copper rivets as a choice. They’ve had red ones in the past; check out the
seconds listing. If you’re interested about how they dye them, I’d just call.
I’ve experienced great customer service from them.
3. Those wavy silver fenders are fantastic! They would look so good on your
blue Clemunique, sparkly , and strong...just like you!
