Anybody else here have Cheviot impressions?

Corona Clean Up of the Garage...
Apologies in advance for any "For Sale" faux pas, as this is really my
first attempt at selling stuff on here.

I am a Riv nerd with four rivs so over the years I have collected a bunch
of different bags and things in an attempt to dial things up just the way I
want. Many impulse buys the just didn't work but they're all in almost
perfect condition, if not totally unused.

*Prices are not including shipping. PayPal or local pickup - I am on the

info/pics. *

Brenn Bags (@cbrennbags in Scotland) Custom Saddle bag leather/treated
canvas, never used - $50
Rivendell Sackville Saddle Sack SMALL - never used. They don't make this
anymore so it's a fun "rare" item. - $125
Ruthworks Custom Brevet - it was on a bike for a hot minute and is in
stellar condition - $125

Joe, thanks so much for the encouragement and your ideas for how to lighten
up this baby. I'll be interested to see what comes of this discussion. I
can see myself with fenders and a saddlebag with a rack or some sort of bag
support if needed with the objective of keeping it light and agile.

Re: [RBW] What Is a Cheviot?

2020-03-27 Thread Joe Bernard
One of the few Rivs I've never owned or tried is Sam Hillborne. Its direct
predecessor was the Bleriot, which was the first Taiwan version of the
Toyo/MUSA Saluki/AHH. I've owned all of those, they all had road calipers and I
consider them road/country bikes.

BUT, Sam has come at various times with calipers or cantis/v-brakes, and in
different ST-to-TT configurations. So why am I even trying to answer this if I
haven't ridden any of them? For background, yon Rivsters. I consider the
Cheviot in the group of road/country bikes I've owned, and they have a
relationship to at least the road caliper version of the Hillborne, the MIT
bike which replaced the Bleriot.

Interesting. A Hillborne (another bike I’ve never ridden). So, a Hillborne is a
road bike?

To everyone else who has a Cheviot and wants to share, do you ride it like you
would a road bike? Or is it for city trips and shopping? Does it limit you in
any way? I’m supposed to get a Cheviot when the next batch comes in (oh please,
let us have Cheviots in 2020) but I’ll be buying it without ever having ridden
it. I’d love to hear how Chev owners like and use these bikes.

Re: [RBW] What Is a Cheviot?

2020-03-27 Thread Roberta
That was my impression, too. Which is why on the other thread, I thought
AHH/Chev combination would be great complimentary bikes. I could see
myself with these two bikes in retirement. Or, just a mixte, if it was
light and spiritedly like my AHH.

There is something special about a mixte. I have one, a Handsome Cycles
she devil, for going around town. Even though nice, not as nice as a Riv,
but it's really fun for city riding. And, I'm more willing to lock it in
the city.

Those are good lines in the sand, Roberta. Admittedly most Rivs aren't
massively far apart in weight and ride, but Cheviot is to AHH as Joe A is to
Atlantis, and Clem is on the stouter Hillibike side where Joe A and Atlantis
live. In..my..opinion.

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and A Homer Hilsen?

2020-03-27 Thread Roberta
I'm not sure...

One thing Leah has been exploring and I'm contemplating is new tires. AHH
has good tires (RBW lister built up the bike). With every Riv I've tested
otherwise, they have been on not so great (as I've been told) Kenda tires.
I don't know enough about bikes to know if the other components make a big
difference in the ride, but I do expect that tires would.

I think the tubes on the AHH are slimmer and on the Joe A are stouter. I'm
translating that to the steel is more forgiving/flexier for the AHH.
Again, I never did any back to back comparisons.

Leah would be a good person to respond since she had a pre-Chev Betty Foy
and both Clem Ls.

I *do* think Chevs get tagged as "about town bikes", as I alluded to earlier
about the mixte look somewhat disguising the Rivendell road bike it really is.
Ok maybe it's a Country Bike; Roadeo and Roadini are the true Riv road bikes.
To me it's a Homer or Sam with a lower toptube.

Honestly, the more input the better. I feel like the Cheviot isn’t discussed
much/enough. I was thrilled to see the cool Montanan featured on the Blug with
hers this week.

But why is this? Is the Cheviot seen and used more as an about town bike and
not for other types of rides?

Whatever anyone wants to say about the Cheviot, I’ll read it.

2020-03-27 Thread Clayton.HBG
Joe, You are advising them that the Cheviot rides "faster" than the Clem
and the Cheviot is a road bike.

I am saying they are both the same for ME from a effort to speed ratio.

If they really want a faster bike, I suggest they get something else based
on MY experiences. A Roadini or Roadeo perhaps, but I don't know if they
would be quicker. I can only compare them to what I have which is what I
did. Just cause I allegedly have done longer rides, that does not mean my
experience is less valid. Not sure how riding shorter distances makes for
better comparison.

My quickbeam was also faster than a Chev or Clem even with just one gear.

I have both the Wavie and Getaround bar. The getaround is really fun for
mountian biking and adventurous around town ridding. The Wavie bar is also
great at those tasks but also much more comfortable on long rides since it
has a little more back sweep and a nice forward hand position. That’s how
they work for me, love them both.

2020-03-27 Thread Clayton.sf
My experience is different. For me both Clem L and Cheviot are similar
regarding effort to speed ratio. I have not found the Cheviot any speedier
than the Clem. The Clem does better in rough stuff and is an equal on the
road. Cheviot is easier to mount and dismount with load. Both are NOT bikes
I would take on unloaded "spirited" rides. Sure, I have done 100k ride on
the Cheviot just because, but my 100k times on my Boulder or Blackmountain
are significantly faster.

[RBW] What Fenders Are These?

2020-03-27 Thread Grady Wright
Hello Friends,
Can anyone identify what fenders are in this photo from rivendell's blug?

https://rivbike.tumblr.com/post/185091706269/who-rides-an-appaloosa-john-a-familiar-face-in

I messaged them to ask if they knew what size tires and model of fender and
the answer was the tires were 2.25" Thunder Burt's and a Hanjo fender. I
can see that the tires are Rocket Ron's and I can't find a hanjo fender
that wide that was available around the time of this photo.

The goal for my new appaloosa is to do a 2.1" tire with fenders which from
this photo looks possible if I can find the right fender.

Thanks in advance for your help!

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and A Homer Hilsen?

2020-03-27 Thread Joe Bernard
Joyce,

I've owned 4 Clems (2 L, 2 H) and a Cheviot - which probably means I have a
problem, but that's another story! 浪 - and think I can double-up a bit on
Leah's thoughts.

The Chev is often misunderstood as a cruiser/tourer-type bike because of the
mixte look but in reality it's a light-ish, stiff-ish road bike with road
brakes.

I think it's a perfect compliment to your Clem set up with alu bars, stem and
post, and maybe don't load it down with front and rear racks and a bunch of
bags. Fenders are fine and maybe a rear rack to support a medium-ish saddlebag
is good. Go for it!

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and A Homer Hilsen?

2020-03-27 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Joyce, what are we, the same exact person???

I love my Clementine, same as you, but I *also* want something spirited and
light, but not a diamond frame. I’m really hoping those Cheviots happen late
summer because I’ll be getting one in that batch. I had the same caveat as you
- I told Vince I wanted the bike to be a lot lighter than my Clem. Think about
it - those Clems are overbuilt for me. I don’t have a lot in common mass-wise
with a 200 pound man - I could get by with lighter tubing. I love my Clem but
it is heavy, and I have nothing but hills here. Therefore, I’m always expending
a fair amount of effort and I’m slow. The only other bike I’m interested in is
the Cheviot, because it’s a mixte. But it also occurs to me I might be able to
get what I want from Nobilette. So, I asked Vince: should I order a Cheviot or
should I get a lighter-tubed custom? After we talked for a long time he told me
we could do fine with a production Chev if I spent a little extra on getting
lighter PARTS. Things like aluminum handlebars instead of steel, etc. I would
love to see Rivendell offer a Susie-version of its Clem.

So, that’s my plan for now. But those Cheviots will not arrive until sometime
in August. Supposedly. Who knows with the world being as it is right now. We
could be twins you know; each have a Clementine and a Cheviot. #rivtwins

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and A Homer Hilsen?

2020-03-27 Thread JAS
I've been thinking about a Cheviot as a compliment to my Clem, wanting a
"go-faster-feeling" bike for road riding and light loads. My Clem is great
for dirt trails, rough roads and grocery runs. Though I enjoy the ride,
light and spirited is what I'm after for bike #2. (I like that
description, Roberta.) I'm replacing a Klein sport-touring bike that has
those very skinny tires (28s) with no room to go bigger and which I've
pretty much ignored since getting the Clem.

So here's the question for those of you with more experience than I, do you
think the Cheviot could be built up in such a manner and if so, are there
certain parts that would make a difference? Wheels, for example? What
makes the MIT AHH seem light and spirited compared to the Chev?

[RBW] How do you ride alone?

2020-03-27 Thread rob markwardt
Greetings,
I ride solo almost everyday. I never get bored and If I didn’t have a family I
could see myself creeping into Freddy Hoffman territory. Almost 95% of my
rides are out and backs from my Seattle home and none of them are ever exactly
the same path. I have several basic ride “routes” and usually leave with a plan
but my a red light or a whim can alter my course in a 180 direction.
I do like to listen to music on long trails. If I don’t have my phone
songs/jingles/old army marching riffs often go on repeat in my brain. I used
to run marathons and ultras so I’m used to using repetitive sounds to get in a
zone.
I’ve also used other mind games to mix it up. Example: I’ll sometimes pick
a destination across town and will try a riding in a pattern to get there
(1block north, 1 block east, repeat til you there and see how close you get).
Another thing I sometimes do is follow all roads that go up. In our hilly area
this can take you to some really scenic spots and is also a great workout.
I’ve also looked up the steepest hills in the city and have done rides climbing
as many as I can find...we’ve got some steep ones!!
The main thing I do though is take pictures. There is always something
interesting to see and it motivates me to keep exploring and find new
places/things...,evidence in the links below.
Enough words...I’m going for a ride.

[RBW] Semi-OT: chambray

2020-03-27 Thread Jay Lonner
I just pulled my trusty MUSA blue chambray shirt out of the wash and it is
on its last legs, so to speak - significant fraying at the cuffs and
collar, worn elbows, missing buttons. I happened to get Grant on the phone
yesterday during a call to HQ on an unrelated matter, and when I pivoted to
this topic he indicated that new ones aren't in the pipeline. Any
suggestions on where to source a replacement that checks many/most of the
boxes of the original? There are commodity-grade options available from the
usual suspects (Carhartt, Duluth Trading, etc.) but I really love the
synergy of that supple Japanese chambray while supporting living wage
domestic craftspeople.

Alternatively, does anyone have the genuine article for sale in size XL?

[RBW] Re: Speed wobble

2020-03-27 Thread Sean on Bike

I had the same issue with my Hilsen when using a brevet bag with very
moderate weight and rack. I since no longer use that set up but shimmy
persisted.

The culprit ended up being the tires–my beloved Jack Brown greens. Bike
shop said tires vary in how "true" they're manufactured–to use my own
terminology, some manufacturers being better than other. Ever since, I've
been riding Schwalbe Marathon Supremes and Continental Grand Prix 4's and
shimmy's gone away.

Jus' sayin'.

Re: [RBW] Helpless in Nevada: How do you secure this fender?

2020-03-27 Thread Leah Peterson
Yes, Joe is right, the bracket is much stiffer than I anticipated. I really
thought I’d be able to bend that sucker into place, but it’s fairly unyielding.
Yes, I can have my husband try to manhandle it, but since it’s so thick I’m
afraid we won’t get bent in the right shape and it will be a rattle trap mess.
Also, the kind of guy he is is a “good enough” and I want it perfect. Given
the fact that we’re sharing close quarters in this shut down, best to keep on
good terms! 藍

[RBW] First Ride Thoughts on my new Sam Hillborne

2020-03-27 Thread Surlyprof
Congrats on the Sam, Nathan. I have an older, orange 56 canti-Sam and almost
every ride has the same impact that your first ride did. Even if I’m not up
for a ride or feel like I’m going for a ride just to get the exercise, a
transformation Usually occurs. At some point in the ride (usually earlier than
later) I realize that I’m authentically enjoying myself. Happens almost every
time. This can often lead to longer rides, faster rides and, the occasional
phone call from my wife asking, “Hey. Where are you? I thought you were only
going out for an hour.”

Enjoy the ride.

Re: [RBW] Helpless in Nevada: How do you secure this fender?

2020-03-27 Thread masmojo
Leah, terribly sorry I somehow missed this thread otherwise could have solved
your dilemma days ago or in one of the emails I clobbered you with the last
couple days.
I have the black versions of those very same fenders on my Polyvalent. The
mounting point on the Polyvalent is different though & just required a screw
straight through.
In any case pity I don't live close because it would literally taken me a
minute to fix that. Presumably reading through this you've got the bracket from
VO already; I am assuming you would have gotten one originally & your inept
mechanic just didn't know what to do with it!? It should look like a silver
version if this:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/i7ewgztjUSMNjic17

Did it come with a screw or bolt or something? If not you can go to Lowes or HD
& get the things you need.

1 screw - cap head allen screw M5 x 16mm should be long enough (maybe a little
longer just in case) I suggest stainless steel.

One M5 nylock nut stainless steel if possible

Probably some appropriately sized washers would be good as well.

With these items in hand sneak up on unsuspecting bicycle and insert screw
through bracket and small hole on the frame bridge. Attach with washer & nut,
but do not tighten. Lower bracket down until it contacts the fender. This
bracket isn't super strong once it's on the bike & against the fender there
should be enough resistance to bend it with your fingers. If this proves
difficult maybe your husband or a neighbor could manage!? Once you get is sort
of bent around the edge of the fender you could gently clamp it down more with
some pliers. It doesn't need to be super tight just snug. If you want it not to
rattle you could slip a piece of cut up inner tube or something in between the
bracket & fender prior to bending the little tabs then clamp down a little
tighter. Once you've done this you can finish tightening the nut on the screw.

I certainly hope that makes sense!? And I'm sorry you don't have any competent
bike shops around there. I've been working on bikes since I was 6 so sometimes
it's hard for me to understand how things like this happen. 樂

Re: [RBW] Re: Speed wobble

2020-03-27 Thread Friend
This is happening on the Homer. It has a large saddle bag but when I was
riding yesterday, with maybe 5 or 7 pounds on the rear rack, it still had
wobble going about 12mph. I did buy it used but it's the factory fork. I
think it may also have something to do with the handlebars. They are
albastache on a dirt drop stem so they are pretty high off the steering
column.

[RBW] Re: How do you ride alone?

2020-03-27 Thread masmojo
I ride alone 95% of the time; especially since my local Rivendell/Surly/All
City sort of hipster shops all closed down. I used to like going on their
weekend rides.
I find myself not working currently so I can ride during the week, middle of
the day, whenever.

I like the exercise aspect of riding, because I am trying to slowly lose the
dad bod, but really I just like to be "out there" on my bike. Alone with my
thoughts. I do find it's good to take a little snack, more so as I get a little
older, instead of the way I used to ride when I was younger, take nothing with
me & just assume there would be water fountains & convenience stores along the
way.
I love all things mechanical, the elegant simplicity & efficiency of a bicyle
really resonate with my soul. When the bike is working well & I feel good it's
quite magical.

I do quite enjoy useful trips on my bike and incorporating errands into my
rides. Yesterday was a shakedown of my new Crust Titanium Evasion, but I also
went to the Post Office, then a bike shop and ultimately hammered out 30 miles.
Felt pretty exhausting in the 90° heat & 20 mph wind.
Probably the main thing I enjoyed about working was it gave me a good excuse to
ride as much as possible. The job itself was sort of secondary to my getting
there & back! 
