dubious about the width initially, but have come to appreciate the longer grip

Appaloosa and a 30mm on the Susie, both in the clear coat finish.  It looks
particularly good with the clear coat Persuader bar.  Lots of raw steel!

Love all those bars...and need that stem!Is that the 710 Jones? I'm looking for

Heat-treated nonetheless. Just grey tape and Amber shellac...but ODI BMX grips

Happy wrapping!

Re: [RBW] Adventure Novels

2021-10-24 Thread 'steve bishop' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi
Steve (UK) here.
Touching the Void by Joe Simpson (non-fiction)
The film is gripping, true to the story and very realistic- the book is even
better.
In 1985, two young climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, set out to be the
first to reach the summit of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. They
succeed, and the two embark on the treacherous descent down the mountain --
only to meet with disaster when Simpson breaks his leg in a fall, leaving Yates
to lower him the rest of the way with ropes. When a storm threatens both their
lives, Yates must decide whether to cut the rope and risk Simpson's likely
death.
No spoilers here...the story is only just beginning!
Enjoy...

Hi bunch,

I have a pair of Paul Canti Levers in silver for sale. These are new and in
the unopened box.

I purchased these from an online retailer a few weeks ago for a project
that fell through. It's too late to return them, so I'm offering them to
the group.

I'm asking $140 Shipped CONUS (that's net to me)

Send me a PM if you're interested and I can send you some photos.

Cheers,

Isaac

Re: [RBW] Max tire on the MIT Atlantis

Hi Erik,

Thanks! I wanted to run some Rene Herse 27.5″ x 2.2″ (650B x 55) Umtanum
Ridge TC Tire but seems that's not in the cards. I'm leaning towards the
bontrager XR3s in a 2.2" I appreciate the confirmation.

[RBW] Worth spending a few hundred on new, tubeless-designed rims and wheel builds?

2021-10-24 Thread Patrick Moore
This question did not generate much response on the iBoblist, and perhaps
the RBW-listers will be more forthcoming.

My question put simply is this: Will my "non-tubeless-but-adapted-(with
multiple wraps of Stan's tape)-rims* work well enough in the long term for
a tubeless (Naches Pass) setup, or is it worth paying a few hundred to buy
some 26" Stan's 355 rims and have the wheels rebuilt. Note that in my
fretful anxiety I always stock up on at least an extra pair of rims for any
given wheelset. (I know that you blithely don't fret like that, but I do,
so include this in the cost.)

Background: After a couple of false starts, the multiple wraps of Stan's
tape on my non-tubeless Sun Ringle EQ 21 rims seem to be keeping the
tubeless Naches Pass tires in place well enough, by the crucial test: *do
the beads stay in place when you let out the air.* And other experienced
riders have said that their similar setups (non-tubeless rims, tubeless tires,
lots of rim tape) work just fine on the long term.

I've heard from riders experienced with "adapted" tube rims that enough
Stan's tape will keep you securely and happily riding tubeless into your
declining years. Others opine that you are just waiting for a burp.

I've got a lifetime's stash of EQ 21s with which the NP wheelset is built,
so the cost of a "yes" answer is probably about $600. I don't build my own
wheels, more's the pity, and one day I might, but for now, include the cost
of building 2 wheels. (I have built 1 ss speed 36 hole wheel which was
trouble free for 1,000s of miles, but I don't have the patience to do it
regularly.)

So ...? Whatddya think?

Moreover: I've read about the apparently currently available
tubeless-designed Velocity A23s and the Stan's 355s, both claimed sub 400
grams and 24 mm exterior width. I've also heard that the brake tracks on
the A23s are too short -- or something that makes them troublesome.
Opinions about either rim? Are there other 26" rim brake tubeless rims on
the market besides the Velocity's and the Stans's?

Thanks.

Patrick Moore, who is gonna real soon test a 1" lighweight tube with lots
and lots of OS regular in a 42 mm Naches Pass tire against thorn punctures.
(Will report. Think it might work with at least 3, perhaps even 4 fl oz of
OS regular. I am tube-tire-width-alignment-skeptical.)

PS: For years I asserted that OS does not work in tubed tires at pressures
much under 50 psi; let's say 40 psi is the cutoff. But! The reason may have
been my stinginess with sealant; I generally have been successful against
goatheads with 2 fl oz of OS Endurance in 700X70 mm tubeless tires.

But! I had problems adapting non-tubeless Alex rims to tubeless WTB Rangers
-- the beads would not stay put -- even when I wearily tried, failed,
disassembled, and added serially more layers yet of Stan's tape -- so I
gave up and installed a tube in the rear, where a hole would not seal. I
glugged in full 4 fl oz of OS regular. Lo and behold, in this annus
terribilis year of bountiful goatheads, no rear flat yet after some months.
(The front tire remains tubeless and the bead remains docile, for some
reason.)

I was encouraged by this by a bike shop clerk who told me that Stan's or OS
in his sub 15 psi Fat Bike tubes has worked fine for years.

There you go.

* Someone complained about my header using the standard term, "Ghetto
tubeless," on the iBoblist. My reactive feelings were mixed. OTOH, chill.
OTOH, I do think it a silly term. I weighed both thoughts in the balance
and decided to forego the term. What do you (pl) think? For the record, I
am a half breed or mestizo of fully 2 colors who grew up among brown and
black folk and married a yellow wife.

Bump

I’m still on the lookout for an A. Homer Hilsen (58-61cm - appropriate for
87 pbh).

If you happen to have one you’re willing to part with, please let me know.

A couple interesting opportunities have come up, but I remain hopeful that
I might find a used AHH.

Thanks for reading!

 Good afternoon Jason,

I got a chance to ride that same AHH over at Mack’s and had the
opposite problem - the bike rode like an absolute dream but was just a
 little too small for me.

Which unfortunately means that anything in my stable would also be a
 little large for you.

I think that AHH was a 61cm which would make it the same size as the
bike that just got posted up for sale but it might be worth chatting with
 the owner.

great. If you have one you’re willing to give up, please let me know!

The RWB Owners Bunch has been a resoundingly useful resource since I’ve
gone from admiring these beautiful bikes from a distance for some time to
finding myself in the market to own one. Eric and Reed’s cataloguing of
past Rivendell Readers and literature has been valuable in helping get an
understanding of the history of these fine bikes and the ideas behind
 them.
Mack’s Bike and Goods in Evanston, IL turned me on to this group after I
test rode a Riv in their shop recently that was, unfortunately, slightly
too big. I’m happy they did so.

If I’m unable to locate a used one, I’ll likely be entering the lotto
for one of the new ones released later this year (or however the Walnut
Creekers decide to to release after the Clem Ls). I’ve also had an eye on
the “used” threads to see if one might come up eventually. At any rate,
glad to have found this community and thanks for reading.

ODI grips! Oh, man...that takes me wy back to my early BMX bikes. I
can feel them just looking at your photo.

And yes, those are the 710 Jones bars. I've not tried the narrower
version, but love these bars on the Appaloosa in its current configuration.
I was dubious about the width initially, but have come to appreciate the
longer grip area. And I really like the Discord w(Right) stems. I have a
50mm on the Appaloosa and a 30mm on the Susie, both in the clear coat
finish. It looks particularly good with the clear coat Persuader bar.
 Lots of raw steel!

Re: [RBW] Re: Need inspiration: Show me your wrapped handlebars, please?

2021-10-24 Thread Erik
These aren't complicated wrapping patterns at all, but I like to mess
around with new color combinations and wraps on a regular basis. A good
source of interesting color combinations are plaid patterns. You can find
a lot of interesting color combinations / harmonies / contrasts in those
patterns.

These are the current iterations on my Rivs. First photo is my orange
Appaloosa - light gray, yellow, lime green with a custom mix of amber and
clear shellac, also Campandgoslow western diamondback tape on Jones H-loop.
Second photo is my Susie / Wolbis: light gray and yellow with clear shellac
on Persuader bars. Third is my Atlantis: chocolate, yellow, burnt orange,
dark gray with mostly clear shellac on Albatross bars.

I'm also starting to mess around with colored shellac. I discovered that I
can use shellac-based drawing inks to successfully color clear shellac into
whatever color or hue my heart desires. It opens up a lot of interesting
possibilities. I should probably be putting this time and effort into my
actual artwork!

Mike, I love the photos and your Atlantis build. I have a Waterford
Atlantis and hoping to add metal fenders. Can you share the size of your
fenders and tires? I'm currently running 700x55 tires and clearance
doesn't allow fenders.

Cheers,

Mike

Re: [RBW] Re: Need inspiration: Show me your wrapped handlebars, please?

2021-10-24 Thread Pancake
I’m planning to do the four color wrap, but it wasn’t too easy to find
directions online, here are my notes from a search last month:

The best directions:
https://imgur.com/a/lGGeb

>From Flickr, "that appears to be a 4-tape weave" here

1 White
1 Black
2 Orange

Yes; just tried it. The two same-colored strands (orange in this case) go
parallel, and the accent colors (white and black here) go antiparallel to
the orange (and parallel to each other). It's an over-under-over-under
weave--each strand takes that course.

Actually believe it or not, it's simpler to make look good than the normal
2-strand 2-color variety, because since each strand does not wrap next to
itself on the next revolution, you can use more of an angle to the bar,
producing a nicer diamond shape, and all colors have nice even diamonds. I
think it doesn't even cost as much more as one might think (assuming you
get a roll size of at least 8 or 9 feet) because each strand covers almost
twice the bar as on the two-strand variety, so you only have to buy *1* of
each color and then you cut the main color (orange here) in half to obtain
the necessary two strands per side.

In fact this weave is so much nicer than the 2-strand variety, I would
recommend using it even for a two-color harlequin, using two strands of
each color. AND, for a sparser (perhaps less garish) look, you can do 3
strands of one color and 1 strand of the accent, producing few more widely
spaced accent diamonds.

See post #13 here
