Re: [RBW] Re: Perfect tires for Clem?

2022-11-01 Thread Danny Noonan
Not quite the same tire sizes, but as far as tread goes, I really wasn't
impressed by the Ultradynamico Mars when I ran the 26 x 2.3 (JFF) version
on my Velo Orange Polyvalent two summers ago. They were very loud and slow
on pavement, and only marginally more capable on light trail than the RH
Rat Trap Passes I was previously running (and switched back to). I'm sure
more gnarly trails like what Ron rides up in New England these days are a
different story altogether, and probably where the Mars shines. But not
really an all-road tire.

For what it's worth I do really like the RH knobbies on my Homer, but
they're 700c x 42.

Thanks for the info Doug! This sounds exactly how I’d want to use my potential
setup, and why I want to revert to 3X-land.

2022-11-01 Thread dougP
Just another confirmation that the large pulley Altus that Rivendell
carries will handle an 11-36 9 speed. I have this on my Atlantis. Shimano
always seems to be conservative in their ratings. It's on a triple with a
34 middle & I use the entire cassette on that ring. 44 outer is only used
up to maybe the 3rd cog from the big, and the 24 inner out to maybe the 4th
cog from the inner.

[RBW] Re: Mamachari, rider experience, ride quality, etc.

2022-11-01 Thread John Rinker
My partner had a Yamaha Paswith (electric) which she loved and rode
everywhere for two years while we lived in Yokohama. Yokohama is a very
hilly city and we lived on top of 'The Bluff', so for her the electric
option made travel laden with groceries possible and even pleasurable. With
baskets on front and back it was her everything vehicle. Sturdy, dependable
and with decent quality parts, she was very sad to leave this bicycle
behind when we left Japan.

As a side note, I would add that the ubiquity of mamacharis in Yokohama,
Tokyo and all over Japan make cycling a very safe endeavour. It is 'THE'
vehicle for mothers to get most children to day care and/or preschool.
Automobile drivers are very conscious of the many bicycles with which they
share the road. My favourite, perhaps unwritten, rule in Japan is, when it
comes to transportation, the less damage you can do, the more rights you
have. Pedestrians are, of course, at the top of this chain. The one caveat
being that the train is king.

Cheers,
John

This doesn't answer your question or help really but I thought I'd share

I have the newer, smaller pulley version of the Altus on my Clem and just
installed a 7 speed 11-36 cassette and it works fine. My 9 speed topped out
at 34 that I had on there stock.

2022-11-01 Thread Johnny Alien
If we are talking about the cool looking big pulley Altus RD then I do
indeed have that rigged up on my Clem L with an 11-36 9 speed rear. No
roadlink used and no problems. Just works as-is. Not sure if it matters but
I am 1x with this setup so no triple up front but it does shift a 9 up to
36.

 HI Rivsters.

I'm wondering if anyone has successfully shifted a 12-36 shimano
9-speed cassette with an Altus RD?

I currently have an altus, and like it well enough, but am using a
 44x30, 11-32 8 speed.

The new setup would be a triple up front (48-34-24), and a 12-36.

According to Shimano, the Altus only shifts up to a 34 cog.

Just wondering if any of you Rivsters have been able to shift lower
 than that?

I can hunt for another derailer if need be, but would much rather not.
I don't like the looks of the one Riv sells (Shimano Deore 592) because it
doesn't have the barrel adjuster. I guess could potentially go to the
Alvio, or the used market. I actually have a Deore something or other
 which
does shift to 36, but it's R Rise, and I have never gotten used to the
 reverse movement. Drives me mad!

 Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: Shimano Altus low range question

2022-11-01 Thread Mackenzy Albright
I switched wheelsets and forgot to switch out my 11-42 cassette and
accidentally friction shifted my altus to 38-42 and it didn't explode. I
think it has much more range than spec'd. I otherwise use 38/24 double with
a 11-36 cassette normally.

[RBW] Re: Shimano Altus low range question

2022-11-01 Thread DavidP
In my experience you can usually expect to go a bit above stated max cog.
While the RD-M310 is rated to 34t, I would give it a go with a 36t.
I have a bike with a Deore M531 (rated to 34t) shifting a 9 speed 40t.
That said hangers can vary and if you find it's not quite there then a
short hanger extension (road link or similar) will get you there.

Re: [RBW] Re: Shimano Altus low range question

2022-11-01 Thread john Bokman
Interesting…thanks for the link! I wonder how Shimano determines what one of
their detailers is capable of shifting? In other words, if they believe a
derailer (lets say its an Altus, for example) is good for up to a 36 low cog,
maybe they say it’s only good for up to a 34 tooth low cog, to give themselves
some “wiggle room”? I’ve heard for years that many different derailers can,
potentially, shift lower than their stated limitations.

I don't think you'll have any problem, especially if you use a Wolftooth

[RBW] Shimano Altus low range question

2022-11-01 Thread John Bokman
HI Rivsters.

I'm wondering if anyone has successfully shifted a 12-36 shimano 9-speed
cassette with an Altus RD?

I currently have an altus, and like it well enough, but am using a 44x30,
11-32 8 speed.

The new setup would be a triple up front (48-34-24), and a 12-36.

According to Shimano, the Altus only shifts up to a 34 cog.

Just wondering if any of you Rivsters have been able to shift lower than
that?

I can hunt for another derailer if need be, but would much rather not. I
don't like the looks of the one Riv sells (Shimano Deore 592) because it
doesn't have the barrel adjuster. I guess could potentially go to the
Alvio, or the used market. I actually have a Deore something or other which
does shift to 36, but it's R Rise, and I have never gotten used to the
reverse movement. Drives me mad!

Thanks,

John

Re: [RBW] Perfect tires for Clem?

2022-11-01 Thread Ryan Frahm
I have been running the Soma Cazadero 700x50 (they make 650x50) my Clem H
for a while now and they have been a very nice all around tire. Just pulled
them off to put the studded tire on and they still look new after several
hundred miles. I love the Rene Herse tires though and think they are tough
to beat. Sand has been the only downfall I’ve encountered on the RH knobby
tires, they dig in too much to get any traction. The Cazadero has less
overall grip and floats a bit better in those circumstances.

I will also say that I loved the Ultradynamico Rose I had a few years back.
I had the race and never had any issues with them in some really nasty
terrain. They were slightly slower on road than the others mentioned.

Joe,

I think that looks sick. And these Minimotos are some of the best braking
brakes i've used (other than disc hydros). I'd definitelt suggws them, but I'd
say building to fit a certain (mtype of riding will help you accept the bike

don't like technical dirt. This bike is perfect for that!

What cranks are those? They look like the 110bcd Ritchey Logic cranks. I'm on
the hunt for some 94bcd Ritchey Compact cranks at the moment.

Re: [RBW] I want to see your Legolases

2022-11-01 Thread Joe Bunik
Nikko,

Here's mine from back in its glory days - I really should put some
wrench time into getting back into a serviceable shape.

https://flic.kr/p/z8k1NT

V-brakes might be what it takes for it to win me back but, TBH - I've
never been completely happy with the tire clearances / rubber
selections I've made, either - 700x42 is the max but x38 with knobs is
more realistic.

Such a beautiful/great riding/lightweight frame otherwise! Just need
to acknowledge that it's a cross bike before anything else, not really
the end-all/be-all dirt banger.

I agree Joe! I experience the same thing—so much so that I have to continually
remind myself that I don’t need Paul levers on all the bikes. Definitely a
slippery slope!

Re: [RBW] Perfect tires for Clem?

Re: [RBW] I want to see your Legolases

2022-11-01 Thread Nikko in Oakland
yup, these are the UD 700x42mm Rosés, and certainly the biggest tire I can
fit on the bike comfortably. I also think the bike really feels at home on
700x38mm tires, but I don't like the cornering control on steilacoom tires
vs the Rosés, so I'm sticking to that. If I have to move to slicks in the
roadie form, I'll probably stick to gravel king/RH 700x35 or 700x38mm
slicks.

Re: [RBW] I want to see your Legolases

All of these bikes are gorgeous. How is the clearance with the 42's? The
legolas is a dream bike for me but have always been curious how wide you
can go if you push it a little.

Re: [RBW] Re: Paul Canti-lever alternatives

2022-11-01 Thread Ryan
I'm using these on my mixte with Paul Racers. Not as pricey as Paul brake
levers, but I think they're nice looking and fairly versatile. And $45.00.
Will work with any rim brake except V-brakes and any bar except
drops/Alba/Mustache

Re: [RBW] Perfect tires for Clem?

2022-11-01 Thread DavidP
I'm thinking of a similar setup for my upcoming 700c Platy build but with a
50mm rear (with tread similar to your Gravel King SS) and 55mm Fleecer
Ridge up front.

A Rose \ Mars combo would certainly be a step towards a more trail oriented
setup. I've yet to find any written impressions of the Mars on pavement.
The Mars remind me of Continental Race Kings, which I recently put front
and rear on a bike and find decent enough on pavement but seem a bit
noisier than the RH Juniper Ridge I have on the front of another bike. I'm
happy with the Race Kings for mixed use and the Mars was on my short list
for the Platypus - they just lean a bit more to the dirt/trail end of the
spectrum, which may be perfect for your Clem.

I was waffling on trying to squeeze a pair of 2.25" Schwalbe Hurricanes on
the Platypus - that one may work well on the Clem. It's wire bead but a
decent weight; and I've seen several reports that it is silent on pavement.
It should handle rougher terrain better than smaller tires and possibly
have some cornering stability due to the side knobs. Still probably not a
tire for hard corners on or off road. Definitely the other end of the
spectrum in terms of tire technology/features/price from RH.

Honestly, I don't think any of us expect a multi-surface tire to rail down
trails so it's matter of choosing degrees.

 Scandalous? Perhaps. Or not.

I asked Will and he cannot get the seat high enough, so biking on
those “sucks the fun out of biking” city bikes hurt his knees with the
saddle too low, and one of those bikes in the video helps. James and Vince
 needed to keep up.

[RBW] Mamachari, rider experience, ride quality, etc.

2022-11-01 Thread Matt Maceda
Hello! Does anyone have any experience with a "mamachari"? For anyone not
knowing; Introducing the Mamachari
.
A Bridgestone Wedgerock 27" popped up in my zone and I was wondering if
anyone had any bike of this type in their collection. I like the idea of
this tough, utilitarian bike, mostly designed to live outside in the
elements. I'm not afraid of 27" wheels or the heavy weight. What's your
take on the mamachari?

[RBW] Paul Canti-lever alternatives

2022-11-01 Thread BobW
I'm planning to reconfigure my Sam Hillborne from drop bars to
upright/flat/sweptback bars; so am looking for short pull brake lever
options. I love the Paul Canti Levers, but they are a bit pricey. Looking
for "affordable" suggestions for silver levers of similar quality to the
Pauls. Thanks!

That's a nice mixte, Paul, thanks for sharing.

Is that a Suntour Compe-V high normal front derailer? I *love* the cage on
those but don't think I'd be down for the high normal arrangement.

That's something that hasn't come up in all our discussions of rapid rise,
the few high-normal front mechs out there!

[RBW] Perfect tires for Clem?

2022-11-01 Thread Richard Rose
The impossible question, right? And when I read Riv's intro to their
website tire offerings "we are not tire snobs" I almost feel guilty
obsessing over such things. "Just ride", right? I want the "do it all" set
of tires (aren't we all?). I have been quite happy with the Gravelking SS
650 x 48 tires for all road / gravel and mild trail conditions. On a single
foray onto a truer singletrack they fell short in loose conditions and
sandy corners. So after exhaustive research I am considering a
Ultradynamica combo, Mars front / Rose' rear. Other contender is Soma
Cazadero. Naturally RH Untanum are a consideration but lack of side knobs
are a concern. I had Fleecer Ridge tires on my Jones 29 and did not think
the noise cancellation thing lived up to the hype - they were rather noisy
on pavement especially compared to the Gravelkings. Speaking of the
Gravelking, check out these pics. I was on a ride recently and felt a
"lump" in the rear tire on pavement. It disappeared when the ride turned to
dirt but was there again when I returned to pavement. when I got home all I
could discern was a slightly raised football shaped bulge and it was worn
smooth. Upon removal I was stunned by the amount of structural damage and
the fact that I did not flat. I wonder if something like this qualifies as
a defect? I will add the pics in a comment momentarily...

I’m really curious what the frameset will end up priced at. And when those
Ortho bars will be back! Haha. It they were a 25.4 instead of 26 bar clamp
would make them seemingly perfect. Having to buy them and a new FacePlater
means I’ll likely have Doom bend me something similar when they start
taking orders again so I can keep the stem I have.

The only conclusion I can come up with is N+1. I thought, maybe
I’ll just sell my Susie, I absolutely love my Clem H. Had to take the

apart for service, it’s getting a new fork and a full powder coat job.
Tried to throw the 2.5 Ehline from my Susie in just to see. Honestly a
 bit
tight for my comfort. The Susie has tons of tire clearance for mud
 side to
side, I couldn’t get much more height because I’m within 3mm of the
 brake
(rubber boot, without I guess a 2.8 would fit with similar room) in
 the
 rear.

My Susie rides more lively and (likely the tire size) smooth.
Unless I decide to have a custom frame made or go with something from
Tanglefoot (71 degree seat tube angle!), I can’t see selling the
 Susie. I
just kinda wish it was 27.5” in my size. I like the smaller wheel for
 the
exploration riding I do. The Susie has more clearance and the tubes
 flex a
lot to give a nice ride. The Clem is stout and ready for anything.
 They are
both such great bikes, if they fit your bike needs. But, catch me on
 the
right day and a large gold Susie might be for sale!

Hi Kieran:

You might try VO Porteur bars...not as much backsweep as either Riv Alba
bars, but really, really comfortable (both road and mtb versions). They're
narrower, however. I like them much better than the Albas.
