All that purple prose to flip a bike he must have gotten on the cheap, and
we got a lecture about how one on Ebay went for $4k so this was a deal! So
uncool.

[RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-05 Thread Luke Hendrickson

Hey Masa!

Great question. I currently have a MIT Atlantis set up with cantilevers and
a rack and larger Maxxis tires (29” x 2.4” in the front and 29” x 2.3” in
the rear). I’ve found that it’s a pleasurable upright cruiser around San
Francisco, a real ripper on mtb trails in Marin, and a wonderful commuter.
I believe that it would fender rather well and be a great bike to do some
randonneuring as well. The main reason I would get another Riv would be to
keep thus bike as-is rather than changing it each time I wanted to do more
road-ish riding with fenders. Then again, fenders and a tire change/second
wheelset would solve that.

I have been anxiously awaiting the next lugged iteration of the Roadini. I
tried Will’s out not long after this last batch and it was a smooth and
stable bike. Nimble and grounded while being zippy, I immediately wanted to
build up a road bike around that frame. As is, I’m going to wait it out for
the next batch of them and see how I feel then.

[RBW] How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-05 Thread Masa
Hi all, I would like to ask you how you would choose 2 Rivendells if you
could own.

Which models? What kind of purposes? What kind of weather? What kind of
roads? Any definition is welcome.

I'm currently riding a Platypus and I feel like I can ride it everywhere
for any purpose as Riv says it's an All-rounder so I just would like to
know how you would add one more Riv or how you are riding 2 Rivs already as
a reference (possibly for my future 2nd Riv).

I hope you enjoy the topic!

Masa

[RBW] Re: The do-it-all Rivendell of choice

2022-12-05 Thread Andrew Turner
My N=1 will very soon be the new Roadini with 44mm Snoqualmi EL tires. I'm
another underbiker and my rides are usually recreational with a fanny
pack's worth of gear on a lot of broken pavement. It took me a year to
realize it's everything I wanted in a custom frame since they've upped it's
appetite for tire capacity and when I saw Will's built up...Oof. As for
commuting and grocery-getting via bike, I prefer a trusty-rusty fixie to
lock-it-and-forget-it, so I'd personally steer away from Riv for that, but
I won't promise the Roadini won't get a basket bestowed upon it one day ;)

 can
carry more than I have ever tried, takes wide enough tires + fenders, and
climbs as well as my lighter bikes. It was also my introduction to 650B.

The one fault it has is that they are pretty hard to find, so I am not
willing to lock it up for more than a couple minutes out of my sight.

My biggest fault is that I seem to be concerned about exposing it to
active rain and salt (snow), but I wish I could break myself of that fear
and ride the heck out of it more.

This one returned to me this year and is the closest of the two in
being a beater. I pamper the purple one still. It now has a dynamo
wheelset and a Pass & Stow 3 rail rack.

Re: [RBW] Appaloosa Purple Prose

2022-12-05 Thread Jon Freeman
Hello,

I contacted the seller. This bike was put on my radar by a friend who is
looking to make his Rivendell dream come true.

The conversation with the seller was kind of weird in my opinion.

Here's how it went:

*Me*:Hey, was the frame in an accident?

**he replies immediately**

*Him: *That’s an interesting first question. Yes, but what prompted you to
ask that?

*Me:* There's a thread about your post on the rivendell forum. It's my
opinion that you should let folks know straight up on the ad. Especially
for the price you're asking.

*I stepped away from the computer until now and he sent me the following
two messages.*

*Him: *Sure, sounds good. Curious what someone posted. Thx

*Him: *Hi Jon, ok just updated my listing as I agree is totally appropriate
and just informed two very interested buyers. I was going to talk about it
in person but you’re right it’s really better to put in the listing. It’s
hard to tell the seat stay was ever bent. I am very curious what someone
posted in the forum and how fair and/or factual what they said is. Is there
any way you can forward me the significant part of that thread? I’d really
appreciate it. Thx John

The above is an unedited transcription of our exchange, and It's
interesting to come back to his messages, his ad update (which I didn't
read), and then his post deletion. Weird.

I'm glad my friend didn't end up getting the bike from him.

[RBW] Re: Stem Length and Handlebar Width

2022-12-05 Thread J
I'd be interested in seeing an example of the 54mm Noodle bar. I've been
considering them after breaking in my old MTB musculoskeletal system to be
more drop bar friendly using the older models of Crust Towel Racks starting
at the widest and now the most narrow. I'd still throw the Noodle in a vice
to flair them out a bit further but the shape looks very nice.

Hi Leah, I would like to ask you how you compare Platypus and Clem Smith Jr
L.
They both are step-through but I assume that they feel pretty different
when you ride them.

And yes, what the nice photo of Slin, Clem and the babies!

I've said it before and will say it again. The Saluki is the best bike
I have ridden. It goes as fast as I can, is lighter than the Atlantis,
 can
carry more than I have ever tried, takes wide enough tires + fenders, and
climbs as well as my lighter bikes.

 Cheers,
 Matt

2022-12-05 Thread scott minor
If you like the reach with 9cm stem, I would just swap out the 48's for the
54's.. not a huge difference in width (1 inch per side?). In fact, I just
made this exact switch about a month ago on my 65cm Homer and kept the same
stem with no ill effects. I think this 54 noodle bar strikes a real sweet
spot for taller riders like myself who don't necessarily need the full-on
wide wide options that have become so popular.

With regards to, "how do you know it's the same bike?" Well, I owned it. I know
it the same way you know your own bike. I recognized it from the original ad
photos from when I bought it, and from when I unpacked it, and from the build
components, and from the touch-up paint on the fork, and the chainstay wrap,
and from the month I stared at it behind my desk while I waited for BikeFlights
to process my claim, and from the seller's confirmation he obtained the bike
from the non-profit to which I sent it.

Photo from the original ad when I bought the bike, and the recent CL ad. Note
the touchup paint on the fork.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best saddle for very upright posture?

2022-12-05 Thread 'Scott Luly' via RBW Owners Bunch
 Kim,
I listed here for sale a black Selle Anatomica H-2 in mint condition.
I'm in no hurry to sell it. If you want to PM me, I'd be happy to send it to
you as a loaner to try as a baseline. Maybe trying it for a spell would help
you refine your saddle search.

what is your experience ?

Re: [RBW] Appaloosa Purple Prose

2022-12-05 Thread 'Scott Luly' via RBW Owners Bunch
I don't have it in me to sell a bike with such a notable history like the
damage to that one and not candidly disclose it.
Maybe it was an unintentional oversight, but the ad language seemed to preempt
more to come. My antenna went up, anyways.
Happy Holidays everyone!!!

[RBW] Re: Best saddle for very upright posture?

2022-12-05 Thread Kim Hetzel
I have a Brooks B67S saddle that I have had for sometime between two other
bikes. It is fairly broken in. I like the short nose on it.
I own a 2021 59cm Clem Smith Jr. "L". It has become futile finding a seat
post with sufficient setback, that measures 29.8mm. I have been riding on
rivets.
I have moved forward recently in getting the right shim to accept a 27.2mm
seat post. Good news is the used PAUL Tall and Handsome post is coming in
the mail tomorrow. With great hope, my problems will be solved with
sufficient setback.
I am considering on the back burner as future purchase of a Selle Anatomica
H-1 saddle for more of a comfortable ride.

Has anyone used one of the Selle Anatomica saddles for upright riding ? If
so, what is your experience ?

Kim (boney butt) Hetzel
Yelm, WA.

[RBW] Re: The do-it-all Rivendell of choice

2022-12-05 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Look at those yummy babies! I mean, nice Clem, but the babies!!! 

Once one has had a Clem with that wonderful step-through tube and the way
way lax geometry, it is hard to replace. I ride my Platypuses nearly
exclusively, but I won’t part with that blue Clem. It’s too good, too
comfortable, and has its own brand of beauty. Someday you might like a
Platy, but it doesn’t have to be at the expense of your Clem. Have both!
And, when those little darlings get bigger, how about a 45 Clem for them?
I’m full of the good ideas.

Re: [RBW] Dura-Ace and Japanese Recycling

2022-12-05 Thread lconley
For my Rivendell Custom, I use a Dura-Ace FD-7800 (31.8 integral clamp,
10-speed era) with my RenéHERSE 42-26 double. Chain is a Dura-Ace 11 speed
(ultrasonically cleaned and waxed), cassette is a Dura-Ace 12-28 11 speed.
Rear derailleur is a Dura-Ace RD-7700GS (large pulleys, 9-speed era).
Friction shifted with frame mounted Silver-1 shifters. Everything works the
way it should. 25 to 95 gear range. Basically a 1x system (40 to 95) on the
42T with a 26T granny bail-out.

One interesting thing about living in Japan is the gomi. 'Gomi' is any

It never ceased to amaze me what can be found in the gomi- beautiful
furniture, golf clubs, karaoke machines, and, yes, bicycles. While
technically one is not supposed to take things from the gomi, during my
 two
years in Japan, I couldn't resist pulling a number of bicycles from the
gomi including a brand new Tern folding bicycle and a 1990s-era Bottechia
racing bicycle, handmade with Columbus tubing and a Dura-ace groupset. The
Bottechia looked as though it had been ridden less than a dozen times, and
the Dura-Ace (7400) is in mint condition. The Japanese tend to treat their
goods with care and respect, and the Bottechia was no exception.

Alas, the frame was far too small for me and Italian racing bikes,
while very beautiful don't really fit my style of riding. Before offering
up the frame to a local shop, I did strip all the parts and was left with
 a
beautiful group of Shimano's finest road mech.

Fast forward to last week, when I swapped out the crankset on my
Atlantis and found that the beautiful Dura-Ace front derailleur works
beautifully with the Rene Herse triple...even in the snow.

I miss so much about living in Japan, to my mind the most civilized of
countries, but I'm delighted to know that as I pedal about exploring the
mountains of BC I'll have a bit of Japanese trash adorning my bicycle.

 Cheers, John

[RBW] Re: Stem Length and Handlebar Width

2022-12-05 Thread Joe Bernard
I'd be inclined to try the stem you have first IF you hadn't mentioned it
already feels a smidge long to you. In this case it's probably not worth
sliding your brand new bars through a stem you're very likely not going to
be happy with, then do it again. I'd get something 2cm shorter at least.

[RBW] Re: Stem Length and Handlebar Width

2022-12-05 Thread Garth
Well that's why riding a bike, let alone Life Itself, is by no means
theoretical . A change of bars, for example, is literally a fresh
perspective unlike any other. So is each and every "blink" of the
eye(I-nfinity). teeheehee

Each "blink" is "play". . . . and in "play" everything happens
spontaneously and in perfect rhythm. "Going with the flow of the play", so
to speak, it's purely inspirational ever joyous ! ! !

You see that handlebar . just sitting there ..and in a single blink
! . it's on for a ride !!!

That's pretty cool to hear that the Rosco Bebe rides great even without the

The Galibier/Soulor only have two bolt assemblies visible on the rear of
the saddle, unlike the Aspin/Aravis, which have four, like this one. It
does look a little bit narrower than an Aravis in your photos, but I can't

[RBW] WTB: lugged 61-63cm frameset that's 47-57 brake-compatible

2022-12-05 Thread Andrew Turner
Hello Group, I hope everyone's been enjoying the holidays.

I'm searching for a type of frameset that's synonymous with this group:
lugged steel, riv-ride-quality, compatible with 47-57 reach brake calipers,
1" threaded headset, and hovers around the 61-63cm frame size, ideally with
a 58-58.5 C-C top tube.

The only frame I'm NOT interested in is a Rambouillet. To clear that
weirdness up, my father owns one and will be passing it down once he passes
(and has "kindly" reminded me oh too many times). Riding up on one now
would be a little rude and might just jolt a sequence of events I'd rather
not jolt!

If anyone has a frameset they're looking to sell that fits the bill, my
budget is $1500. I'd also be interested in non-riv bikes for less but my
knowledge of 57-reach vintage lugged steel is very slim so I don't know
what to ask for specifically.

Cheers,
Andrew
Franklin TN

[RBW] Re: Best saddle for very upright posture?

2022-12-05 Thread schralp
I just went through all of the Brooks iterations over the last 3 months for
my Platypus. I found B67 was the right seat for my posture and rear. Flyer
not flat enough, flyer carved pinches areas that shouldn't be pinched, B17
also not flat enough and my old Professional definitely not comfortable for
upright riding. YMMV but I find the flat rear section perfect for upright
riding and get no impingement on the hamstrings on the downstroke. The
springs provide just enough give rocking back and forth at my weight (175#)
but do not dampen much vibration. Hope that helps.

one. Looking to get the LImeOlive 60cm. Seems like the 60cm frames have
been hanging around on some of the other recent drops, so fingers crossed.

[RBW] Re: Stem Length and Handlebar Width

2022-12-05 Thread lconley
It depends on how wide your shoulders are in relation to the bars. If your
arms are straight out, or angled out now (on the ramps or drops), then your
assumptions are probably correct. If your arms are angled in now, then
maybe you are good with your existing stem or maybe even need a longer stem.

[RBW] Re: Stem Length and Handlebar Width

2022-12-05 Thread Paul Clifton
Personally, yes, I would expect to want a shorter stem with wider bars. I
would probably try it with the existing stem, but I'd anticipate going
shorter.

Which also makes me realize that, since I'm pretty sensitive to the impact
of stem length on handling, there's probably some setups where my optimum
bar width, doesn't work with my optimum stem length.

[RBW] Stem Length and Handlebar Width

2022-12-05 Thread Ben Mihovk
Hey Everyone!
In theory, if one was to switch to wider handlebars, I would assume the
stem length would have to get shorter to keep the reach about the
same...right?

I have 48cm noodle bars on my Sam with a 9cm tallux. The reach is pretty
good...maybe a little on the stretchy side. If I go to a 54cm noodle bar,
I'm thinking it'd be necessary to get a shorter stem. Right?

Thanks for your thoughts!

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day and first ride

2022-12-05 Thread Tom Palmer
Good call on the wheelset- I finally remembered to look. I really like them
and wanting to use them on the Platypus, prompted the unRivish black lower
half build.
Ride update- 5 rides in and really liking the Platypus for our chipseal
roads and dirt. First change is swapped on RH Snoqualmie Pass tires and
nicer ride than the Speed Rides. Now wanting a little wider bars than the
Albatross. Kicking myself for selling Chocos I had, but that's how some of
us roll, isn't it? Going to put on some VO Granola bars I liked on the
buena vista.
Tom

[RBW] FS: 58 cm Green Quickbeam

2022-12-05 Thread Conway Bennett
I have an embarrassment of riches, and I don't have time or desire to make
granular decisions about which bike to ride. I have been riding with both
of my kids lashed to my Hunqapillar, so this bike has been ridden in over a
year, so I think it's time to move it along. This is a riders bike, and it
has plenty of beausage. I am at least the second owner, and it has been
well. It is currently located in Chicagoland, and I have a box ready to
pack and ship it. The price for the bike as listed below is $1000 net to
me via Chase QuickPay. Buyer pays for shipping and provides prepaid
shipping label.

So, for your consideration is a:

   - 58 cm Green Quickbeam frameset with surly chain tensioner,

   - original but serviced headset,

   - 103 velo orange bottom bracket installed by me,

   - and an all silver fixed/free velocity built 36h Atlas 120 mm spaced
REAR wheel (I NEED THE FRONT WHEEL) with a new surly fixed cog and white
industries dos eno freewheel. I also have a velocity single speed rebuild
kit, but this wheel has relatively light use.

Re: [RBW] Re: Front Derailer Adjustment

2022-12-05 Thread Doug H.
Garth,
I need to heed this advice and more so this attitude! My frustration might
have lead to a few choice words during the process but finally getting it
right is satisfying and gratifying. All hail the bicycle for its simplicity
and intricacy all at the same time.

I was all set to write about doing it this way or that way, but honestly,
I've never done it the same way twice as each and every "situation" is
different. Just like reading and writing this, I can't say there is any
prescribed way to do it, it rather "just happens" spontaneously and
creatively, and it's Wonderfull !
