[RBW] Re: Riv Riders in Western NC

2023-02-16 Thread Pam Bikes
Mark, I've been riding in Apex and Cary and I think it's hillier than
Charlotte. Lots of rollers with the steep grades I'm finding. Charlotte
is flatter.

Dick, I didn't realize you were the OP until now. I'm not great at
organizing but I would like to do a Riv ride. I haven't ridden in
Brevard. I hear it's great.

[RBW] Re: Riv Riders in Western NC

2023-02-16 Thread Pam Bikes
Franklyn, I'm in Charlotte and can loan you a bike but you'd need to pick
it up. If y'all do organize anything I'd plan to be there but I'm busy
teaching CyclingSavvy 2/24-26. Y'all could all come to Charlotte and join
me for the course! Or I could come 2/27 or 28. It's warmer in Charlotte.
It was 72° - shorts and t shirt weather today. Just an idea.

If you ever take a notion to organize a Brevard area ride for Riv
riders (and Riv curious, like myself) I'd be interested. Between the
Brevard paved greenway network, the dirt trail into the National Forest at
Pisgah Forest and the breweries/eateries along the greenway - and whatever
routes you Brevard locals keep secret - I bet a low key party pace ride
 could be a fun event.

 Hi all — I just finished up a build, it's a 1985 Bridgestone MB-2. I
have a full build video up over here: https://youtu.be/gJPnbpzjbKg

I purchased the bike as a complete from Marketplace, it was stock but
for the saddle and tires. Everything was removed and I passed the frame
over to Rob Gassie at Bing Bicycles. He added some rack mounts to the fork
and seat stays, changes some the cable guides, added a third bottle boss
 to
the downtube and two additional bottle bosses to the underside. He also
stripped the frame to raw steel.

Instead of paint I went for a raw finish. There are two applications of
patination acids, with and without heat, followed by clear lacquer and
 wax.

It's built up with a mix of parts from across time, all silver.
De-anodized some black Paul cantilevers and also de-anodized an XTR
RD-M952. Dead stock WTB grease guard headset purchased from Jacque Phelan.
Lots of Suntour, some TA cranks and modern parts from Japan. Crust x Nitto
Shaka bars, MKS bear trap pedals, Nitto cable hanger.

I had some custom brass headbadges made with the old Bridgestone logo
 which I shaped and finished.

Velocity Atlas 26" wheelset with a Kasai dynamo hub up front and an XTR
M900 in the rear. Front wheel by Rich at Rivendell, rear built by Andre at
my local bike shop. I'm running Rene Herse extra-light tires with a Rat
Trap Pass in the back and a Humptulips Ridge in front.

Many thanks to members here for helping out with parts when I needed
them: Trevor B., Dave H., Liz S. and Patrick M.

That was exactly what I spec'd it as, since they were kinda semi-custom, I
wanted the Ram orange on it.(My Ram is a green one, but then I later
found a tall Ram frame for my son, so we've got two Ram orange bikes and
then my canti-Rom is that light silverish blue color.)

[RBW] Re: 650b or 700 Bombadil frame question

2023-02-16 Thread Leslie
I've cantis on the canti-Rom, Motolites on the Bomba, like 'em both. Have
to admit: I'm running 700-40 MSO's on the Rom, and I have to deflate to
get that fat tire into the cantis on that frame (I'm running a tire
seriously over what is spec'd on it). The Motolites are easier to get
really fat tires in and out of

FWIW I run Discord fingerling on my Hunqa with a 710 Jones Bar (it is 31.8)
- this is no Bosco but the setup feels solid. To be fair, mine is a short
70m stem, not a super long reach.

Here's the link, looks like they're sold out:

I use only cantilevers and basically will always ! Good ol' smooth post
cantilevers that clear the frame as opened and open all the way. No silly

including making/selling/defending frames without rear cable stop bridges.
Call it what you will, as so have I. ((( laughing ))) Nevertheless, it
stands. I could also speak about how "the industry" is their own worst
enemy, in fact, their only enemy and the customer but a witness.

I remember not long ago before the Clem Riv couldn't give a v-brake away.
Then with disc brakes becoming the thing, and dwindling proper canti
manufacture and design , it didn't leave them much choice as the frame was
a sales hit. It's like drinking a brand of beer you really don't like, but
because the wife loves it, and you love the wife's company, you swallow
your taste buds, one bitter chugatatime. "Ain't this
beer great ? said with crooked broken smile and whose eyes betold another
story.

What's life without a couple of good ol' stories ? teeheehee .

So sure Max, Anything but a cantilever on your Bombadil would leave you
without any brake at all :-)

Randy, that photo looks like milder climate compared to your first

Re: [RBW] Re: Proper(?) fitting of a Bosco or similar handlebar & Nitto V5 stem

2023-02-16 Thread iamkeith

to be a good design for bars where the moment of force is relatively high,

Curious: I can see how a Technomic would be wholly overwhelmed by a Bosco.
But what about a wide-faced, 4-bolt single-clamp stem? The only examples of
these last are the Ritchey 4-bolt faceplate threadless stems I have on 2
bikes, but I wonder if these might hold a Bosco in place firmly without
requiring over tightening of the bolts?

This is not an idle question; I may try a bosco or tosco or some other such
long sweepback bar on the Monocog 29er, and I'd not want to have to buy a
new V5 stem as well as a new, expensive, bar.

Patrick, just in case it isn't clear: The V5 stem probably only works with
Nitto-made bars. The Tosco, even in the narrower 25.4 versions, lack the
long sleeve swaged onto the clamp area. On nitto bars, i know it works
with the Bosco, but I think it might even be worth double checking to make
sure the sleeve is long enough on the Billie, Chaco, Wavie, etc. Starting
with the Billie bar, Nitto adopted a new manufacturing method that combined
a bulged section WITH a sleeve. For the Bosco and older models, the clamp
diameter was made up entirely with a swaged sleeve - like their drop bars.

Regarding clamp force: Ive experimented with boscos quite a bit. I found
a steel, ritchey force stem with a broad clamp surface, to be adequate,
even with a single bolt. I was eventually able to get them to work in a
technomic stem, and not slip after tightening enough, but found this
unsatisfactory for another reason. The aluminum bars flex in a torsional
way, and the narrower clamp width exacerbated this. I think this
anti-torsion characteristic of wide clamps would be the best part of the V5
stem.

Ultimately, I found the steel bullmoose version to be the only Bosco I can
use - despite wishing the angle was different (I wish the ends angled down
more). The steel is less flexy and the effective stem length is 150mm
which is still barely long enough. It's hard to find long stems these
days. (This is the problem with the OG slingshot stems, especially. I
have one in my parts bin and keep hoping to use it, but it never works.
I'll eventually get custom bars for it.)

All of this became moot for me, once the Tosco came out. It offers all of
the bosco benefits while fixing most of its flaws. But, as I noted, it
won't work with the V5 stem unfortunately.

Re: [RBW] Re: Proper(?) fitting of a Bosco or similar handlebar & Nitto V5 stem

2023-02-16 Thread Patrick Moore
I have to agree that the V5 seems perfect for long-sweep bars and
personally I think it looks good -- not pretty but not ugly. And the
exposed bar center is as you said the perfect place for a headlight.

Richard and Garth: Noted about the presumed adequacy of 4-bolt stems. I use
the X-cross tightening method meself.

I just looked at Riv's stem offerings; I'd not looked for a while. I see
they've moved to quill 4-bolt faceplate stems over the Technomics and T
Deluxes of yore. Me, I'd also prefer the Nitto Slingshot stem and I agree
that, while I like the V5, I like the Slingshot better. I bet a remake
would get some traffic.

[RBW] Re: 650b or 700 Bombadil frame question

2023-02-16 Thread lconley
Mine doesn't have a built in hanger.

I went with cantilevers - easier to put bigger tires on with fenders and
also I am using drop bars. I have Paul Motolite V-brakes on my Gus ( and
other V-brakes on other bikes) and I don't see any advantage in braking for
V-brakes (nor discs for that matter) over cantilevers, but I do live in
Florida.

Thanks for sending that geo chart Garth! That makes more sense.

You were close! I measured my Schwalbe tires and they are 44-45mm as
installed on the velocity synergy rims. It's hard to gauge the true
clearance of the frame without actually trying the wider tire, but I think
2.1 is ideal and anything beyond would be pushing it, particularly in the
rear - maybe I can go 2.2 or even 2.3 in the front and 2.1 in the rear. It
gets close as you approach the kickstand plate where the stays narrow,
 I'll
play with it some more but my guestimate is that I'll have around 60mm of
clearance with the wider/taller tire, so if I want at least 3mm on each
side, that means 2.1 is the way to go in the rear, which means the 700c UD
MARS Race probably won't work for me on this frame.

 Thanks again

About brakes, what do you all think for the Bombadil? V-Brakes or Cantis?

I'm wondering if not using the built in hanger would be a waste

If you ever take a notion to organize a Brevard area ride for Riv
riders (and Riv curious, like myself) I'd be interested. Between the
Brevard paved greenway network, the dirt trail into the National Forest at
Pisgah Forest and the breweries/eateries along the greenway - and whatever
routes you Brevard locals keep secret - I bet a low key party pace ride
 could be a fun event.

[RBW] Re: Riv Riders in Western NC

2023-02-16 Thread Dick Pahle
I am out of my league when it comes to orgainizing things (anything). Pam
in Charlotte (on this list) is much better at it than me as she does it all
the time. Downside is she doesn't know the area all that well. Could be
wrong about that.

Would enjoy a group ride and would be cool to get others from as far away
as Kentucky and/or Knoxville Tn to join us. If anybody wants to stay
overnight Jann and I have two guest bedrooms and lots of floorspace for
those who may not mind crashing there in a sleeping bag. Neat little 50's
style motel nearby too. Lots of camping options including backcountry in
the Pisgah National Forest.

99% of my road riding is slow and solo. Leave from my house for various
amounts of time and distance, based on how my 73 year old body feels at the
time.

Thinking out loud...many good local shops in town. They could
suggest routes. Or we could do a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway which
would mean out and back or arranging for some kind of shuttle service.
Parkway is beautiful. Lots of 'scenic overlook spots' every few miles.
Hilly in lots of places. As best I can recall the elevation along the ridge
near us is 3 to 5,000 feet. Riding up to the Parkway and back from Brevard
would be about 30 miles, round trip. Or longer if you wanted to add some
parkway miles once we got up there. For me, that would be a hard ride.

What's next? Does someone here wanna organize? All done on this thread or
do we start a new one?

Spring and fall are georgeous here. Summer too but it can be hot and humid.
Plus, we are in a temperate rain forest so it rains a lot.

Had no idea my post looking for Rivs in the area would generate this kinda
response. It's great!!!

Dick

steel Albatross bars, the efficacy of such a design is obvious. Notably on
the 4 bolt, I tighten them a little at a time, alternating criss-cross,
zigging and zagging, and they only need to be modestly tight, no heroics
involved. Come to think of it, I don't even use a shim with a 26.0 Koski
alloy threadless stem and the 25.4 steel Albatross. I was gonna get a shim,
as criminally overpriced they are, and I thought I bought one, but darned
if I can't find it, so I left it as-is to see how it went, and it hasn't
budged for years. I can't say I'm a hulkster, but I do climb out the saddle
often and apply a lot of lateral leverage.

A Bosco could really use an open face stem for anything save pedestrian
riding.

Basically, any open face stem is going to hold more firm than a closed
single bolt one, 2 or 4 bolt.

The current Nitto V aren't quite as nice as the cold forged and burly
elegance of the Specialized Slingshot stems from the 80's though. Damn
they used to make some nice parts, for the sake of the beauty and
creativity of it, of Living itself.
