2023-03-14 Thread Fullylugged
I put 650B on a 54.5 frame so I could stand over it more comfortably (my
normal size frame for a 700 wheel road bike is 50 cm). I put 12,500 + miles
on it and loved it. 38 is the max size. I thought the handling in
particular was great. YMMV. Conti makes a good 28 mm 650B tire, others
available in wider widths from Soma, Compass, Panaracer, Michelin.

That doesn't work. You should just sell it to me, cheap. :D

I do think I have heard of people doing this, but I don't remember where I
read that. I've not tried myself, because I think I would still be limited
to fairly narrow 650B wheels on my old road.

Out of curiosity, did you get the pink one off craigslist? If so, please
don't paint it. Be brave enough to ride pink.

Best regards,

Re: [RBW] Seat Post Slippage

2023-03-14 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
FWIW, I have been advised in the past that, for standard (alloy, steel) frames
and seat posts, you should never have to resort to anti-slip grease.

A slipping post is a sign that something is mechanically wrong. In one case,
the seat collar on one of my bikes had a small protrusion that was preventing
it from gripping the post properly, leading to slipping. Once that was fixed (a
few seconds with a file) everything worked properly.

The mechanics I trust have said that the proper course of action is to find the
mechanical problem, not apply friction paste. The paste is a band-aid on the
real problem, which will still be there.

+1 on the single bolt seatposts. Those are the worst. I've always ended up
with a Thomson because way back in the 1990s they were the only 2-bolt
seatposts. Are there any alternatives nowadays? The Thomsons are pretty
spendy for something that seems like you could easily copy it.

Re: [RBW] Has anybody 650'ed a Riv Road?

2023-03-14 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
My ’97 Riv Road came to me with 650B wheels. I ran 38mm tires on it, which were
the widest that would fit between the chainstays.

It was fun, but about a year ago I switched it back to 700c wheels, which
required different brakes (the long reach brakes needed to work with the 650B
wheels didn’t work with 700c).

Re: [RBW] Re: Seat Post Slippage

2023-03-14 Thread Brian Turner
The Park Tool SuperGrip compound is supposed to be for carbon or alloy use.
I've heard it really doesn't matter though; apparently stuff that's
advertised for carbon fiber can also be used on steel and aluminum... I've
just never had to actually use it before. I would be surprised if the Nitto
S-83 26.8 post is somehow "off" in sizing. I mean, it's Nitto after all.
I've had the bike since October but it has only started slipping in the
past couple of weeks, so I'm not sure what has changed to cause it to do
so. I can see how the machined grooves on a Thomson or the cheapo Kalloys
that a lot of Rivs come with would help to prevent slippage. My main issue
with Thomson posts is that they do not provide enough setback for me, and I
won't use the Kalloys because I can't stand single bolt saddle clamps.

2023-03-14 Thread Cody Marvin
I have one, a '95, that I bought recently and put a few miles on before
taking it apart and sending it off for a repaint at Waterford. It had 650 x
38 Pari-Motos with Tektro 556s. My experience riding it has been limited so
far, but it was a fun ride, no problems that I could see. I think the
person who I bought it from, and who did the conversion, put a lot of miles
on it with the 650b.

2023-03-14 Thread 藍俊彪
I've never needed anti-slip compound on any of my steel, aluminum or ti
frames. Are you sure it's not the seatpost that's off in sizing? I
discovered, for instance, that the kalloy that came with my Roadini was
just no good. Replaced it with a Thomson and the problem just magically
went away. I did notice that the Thomson seatposts have some milling that
might improve grip, but then again, the cheapo seatpost on my Airborne
mountain bike (aluminum frame) never slipped either, so that milling
probably isn't even necessary. My impression with anti-slip compound was
that it was for carbon fiber seatposts (and I have cracked those) which
can't stand getting torqued.

Brian, this is interesting to me because I could not get my S83 to go in the seat tube of my Gus. I too have always used Phil grease. The Kalloy post (also 26.8) slid right in. Bit of a backstory: I bought this bike and set it up with high

Unfortunately he had a significant health scare very recently

 Plus he's
got some 90's Rocky Mountain which he won't let go of, and I
 thought,
"well, if he's happy with this, I'm happy too." So, I tinkered a
 bit and
tried to find a way to have this fit me but I could not get
 comfortable
myself on it (I'm an 80 PBH, standover on this is 81-82, and the
 reach
still felt a bit long for me even with a short stem and compact
 bars - and
I'm on a 51 in both a Sam and Hunqapillar and don't feel I would
 have a
need for it even if it did fit). So, I thought someone here might
 appreciate.

Hopefully it is ok to post this here and even if no interest,
I'm hoping someone will find that the bike is at least cool to
 look at. It
really is nice and makes me wish I was taller and longer limbed.

[RBW] Re: Downtube bosses predicament

2023-03-14 Thread KenP
Yep, been there too. Usually an easy-out works if done carefully as
mentioned in the other posts. You have to get that hole centered and
deeper. Usually works. One more idea; drill the whole thing out bigger
and put in a helicoil to replace the threads. One more idea; take off the
boss completely and there are strap-on bosses made for bikes that don't
have any type of stops--a yucky fix though. Riv used to sell them, you
could give them a call.

[RBW] WT Rent or Borrow bike In Henderson, NV

2023-03-14 Thread Roberta
Does anyone have, or know of a place, I could rent a non-strut bike with
upright handlebar while I’m visiting? Prefer nonRiv. I’m also willing
(would love) to buy an inexpensive one from CL and give it to you
afterwards. 83pbh, 52-54ish / 18-20” ish frame size.

Please contact me off list.

Thanks,
Roberta

Ha! Thanks much, Joe. Since I fit the MIT Atlantis in the 62cm variant,
this isn’t quite my size. Thankfully this means no explaining required to
my wife as to why I have yet another bike…

[RBW] Re: FS: Riv Road in Berkeley 58cm

2023-03-14 Thread Joe Bernard
My somewhat vague memory is these were sized like a standard road bike of
the time: 58cm C-to-T ST and somewhere in the range of 57-59cm C-to-C TT. I
would place it somewhere between the 54.5 and 58cm current Homers.

But don't listen to me, hrab your measuring tape and get some numbers and
ride it! That's a rare steed in that color and the price is BIN. No
waiting, it's too storming to ride Tuesday anyway, buy a bike!
