Re: [RBW] Bombadil - first ride and work in progress (some photos)

2023-04-13 Thread maxcr
Thanks Matthew; the paint is really something!

It’s a 60 - take a look at the initial confusion I had before getting it -
here’s the
thread:
https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/jK5Le9uiJ3E/m/mkygvvKuAAAJ

It’s a 700 wheel size and I think 2.1” would be comfortable and 2.3” or
more would be ambitious, particularly with knobs.

Following the Radavist’s bomba build, I had originally ordered MARS 2.3”
from ultradynamico but I got the wrong size (650) before getting the bike…
I returned them but still wonder how that would handle/look like, so I
might reorder at some point - what tires you would you use?

I’m lucky that I have a 58 Hunqapillar with 2.1” thunderburts and no
fenders as my hillibike, so I’m not in a hurry to make the change on the
Bombadil right now.

The seller said he got it from Riv in 2016, based on the serial, I think it
was made in ‘09 which seems in line with the timeline of when they were
being sold.

I’ll keep you in mind if I decide to swap the bullmoose bars although it
seems silly to have these huge heavy bars shipped from Riv to the east
coast to have them shipped back to CA.

Cheers!
Max

2023-04-13 Thread Matthew P
Hey there Max!

I love your blue Bombadil. It'd be a dream to score one at a reasonable
price. I love that paint!
What is the frame size and wheel size?
I like fenders but I like even more maxing out my tire width. How wide can
you go? You think about trying that?
Any idea on the year of the bike and where it was made?
Let me know if you want to sell the bullmoose bars ;-)

Thanks for sharing and happy Bombadil'in!

Hi all — I'm comparing 26.8 seatposts and their varying setback. I'd
like the saddle on my MB-2 to be further back.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with how a Thompson and Nitto
S83 compare in terms of setback? I've been searching around and can't find
 any definitive measurements.

I'm currently running a Suntour XC Pro seatpost and it looks like
either of the above will give me more setback than I currently have.

I've tried and very much did *not* like the IRD wayback seatpost, it
slips. Others have reported the same. Don't buy this seatpost!

The vintage SR MTE-100 is good, solid, I run one on my Appaloosa. Would
rather try something different. Plus, they're hard to find!

[RBW] Re: 173 v. 178 Crank Arms?

2023-04-13 Thread Brett Callahan
Is toe overlap an issue for you on this bike? Would it be if you added
fenders? Do you ever intend to add fenders?

I think the other arguments in this thread, both pro and con, are
articulate. Personally, I hate to overlap and would make my decision based
on whether this will make it a problem, or worsen a problem.

[RBW] Re: Riv Ride in Asheville NC?

2023-04-13 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Laing,
We've not solidified ANY details yet, but I'd guess about 50/50 road/gravel
fire roads. There are also lots of single track options that we could map
out if anyone is interested in that. We will probably also map out shorter
and longer options for each day.

Re: [RBW] Re: 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-04-13 Thread lconley
My Clementine would need a spacer to use a 27.2 seatpost, the early Clems
used a larger diameter seat tube.
My super heavy duty Bombadil was built with a 27.0 Seat Tube inner
diameter. I used a brake cylinder hone to enlarge it, that was before I got
the reamer.
I completely understand people not wanting to modify their frames, but I
just turned 67 this week, so I don't think I will live long enough to wear
out any of my frames, modified or not. I have been working on my own bikes
for 50+ years and have broken things before and it is not the end of the
world. I haven't broken a frame yet, though.
I am not knocking 26.8 inner diameter seat tubes - Grant knows what he is
doing. I have short legs and a long body, so long setback seat posts (I
have 3 S-84s) and long stems have been my friends, allowing me to ride off
the shelf bicycle frames. My Rivendell Custom has a 53.4 seat tube and 63.0
effective top tube.
Remember, it is a steel frame and seat tubes can be replaced if worse comes
to worse, and that gives you the excuse to get a new Joe Bell paint job.
Rivendells (including my 1st Sam Hillborne) had 27.2 inner diameter seat
tubes for years, with few if any problems. Has anybody on this list ever
had a 27.2 seat tube fail at the seat post?
I also filed my steerer tube on my Custom so that I could use a ReneHERSE
front cable hanger.́HERSE HERSE

[RBW] Re: rack for Wald 139

2023-04-13 Thread Thomas McCause
I have the Blackburn Local Basket Front or Rear Bike Rack, One Size
on my Big dummy, and it is bomber
(if a little heavy). It's discontinued, but if you can find one, I think
you'll really like it. It perfectly fits the welded Rockgeist bag that is
built for the 139 basket.

[RBW] Re: 173 v. 178 Crank Arms?

2023-04-13 Thread R Olson
Matt,

There's a long thread on the i-bob group site on this topic as well. I
just bought some longer cranks (my PBH is 91 and I'm 6'2") - riv is selling
184's now, so I got some. I went form 175's to 184's, so a bigger jump
that what you're looking to do. It's slightly noticeable. I do like the
longer ones better, but it's probably personal preference. Most noticeable
aspect is a slightly lower cadence, which I personally like, but it doesn't
make that much of a difference tbh. I had 178's on a 58 cm appaloosa I
used to own so it should fit fine (if memory serves, I think I actually
sold that frame to you several years ago, lol). Currently, I have 178's on
my Clem L (in addition to the 184's on my Roadini) and don't have any
problems with pedal strike. Just don't pedal through corners.

 Hi everyone,

I am considering switching my crank arms. My existing arms are 173; I’m

Bike: Appaloosa 58cm with 700c wheels
 PBH: 90.5
I’m 6’ tall and I have long legs.

 Here are my questions:

1: Will 178 arms work on my bike, or will I not have enough ground
 clearance?

2: Why was the bike originally built with 173 arms? Is it a
standard/average size, better ground clearance, better fit for the average
 user, toe-hitting-the-front-wheel, or another reason?

 3: Is the 173 v. 178 difference so minimal that I won’t notice it?

As always, your experience, wisdom, advice, and opinions are
 appreciated. Thanks, everyone.

Re: [RBW] Re: 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-04-13 Thread JAS
Eric, I had a similar set-back problem with my Platypus. Since I prefer
Selle Anatomica saddles, I ordered a new one for Platy in the pretty light
tan color only to discover that the new ones with aluminum rails have a
shorter rail length than the steel rails. I wanted to use my Nitto S-83
seatpost and couldn't get the set-back I needed so after a chat with Grant
regarding various seat post and saddle combinations, I returned it to SA
for the original style (no badge). A proper set-back was accomplished.

Although my solution was the SA saddle, how your bike looks and feels to
*you* is critical! I hope you find a pleasing solution.

[RBW] Re: rack for Wald 139

2023-04-13 Thread J Schwartz
Thanks for these suggestions. I hadn't heard of Pelago. It certainly
looks like it could do the trick on a budget.
Yes the P racks seem perfect but they are even more than the Basket Rack.
I'm sure they are priced correctly just saying...same thing applies re: my
original post.
I hadn't thought of the Obentu. It's also small (8.25" square for a 13" x
18" basket) but has 5-way attachment to the bike so that should help.
Think I'll give my R-14 a try first even though there's no diving board.
My intention is to be able to carry 2 grocery bags up front and/or farmers
market hauls which can get heavy and a few miles so need to be smart about
itwhich may mean just ponying up for the Basket Rack.

[RBW] Re: 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-04-13 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I just checked out the Ritchey 2 bolt post and was disappointed to see the
two bolts are for extra retention, not adjustment. A two bolt seatpost,
like the S83 or the Thompson, that uses the two bolts to adjust fore and
aft angle are the only seatposts that should be able to be called 2 bolts.
So the Ritchey gets a booo. Kalloys are fine posts for a great price, but 1
bolt is sad for both retention and adjustability…

Good for you, Jay. I love seeing the bike advocacy groups earning much needed funds for their grassroots efforts through these kinds of higher value donations. On Apr 13, 2023, at 09:14, Jay Lonner wrote:Some years ago I built up Surly Long Haul Truckers for my adolescent daughters. The fork steerers are uncut. The builds are very Riv-ish. Sugino cranks, Deore rear derailers, VO Porteur bars, SunTour friction thumbshifters, Tektro Oryx brakes. One bike has XT hubs, the other XTR. Tubus Cargo rear racks fitted with Busch and Muller 4D Toplights, Nitto M12 front racks with baskets. Paul Gino light mounts on the forks. Now here’s the catch — even though a lot of these parts are valuable, I’m not really interested in holding out for top dollar. I’d rather see these bikes get used in support of some sort of cycling advocacy. There’s a local non-profit community bike shop where I could drop them off, no problem. But I also remember a time in my life when money was tight and I had young daughters that I wanted to introduce to biking. I’m wondering if any of you kindred spirits out there in Riv-land  meet that description, and might be interested in working out some sort of deal for picking up one or both of these bikes on the cheap. [RBW] Riv-ish bikes for sale, terms apply

2023-04-13 Thread Jay Lonner
Some years ago I built up Surly Long Haul Truckers for my adolescent
daughters. Those daughters are now adults, and these bikes are in need of a
new home. The black bike measures 20” from the center of the crank to the
center of the seat cluster, the green one 19”. The fork steerers are uncut.

The builds are very Riv-ish. Sugino cranks, Deore rear derailers, VO
Porteur bars, SunTour friction thumbshifters, Tektro Oryx brakes. One bike
has XT hubs, the other XTR. Tubus Cargo rear racks fitted with Busch and
Muller 4D Toplights, Nitto M12 front racks with baskets. Paul Gino light
mounts on the forks.

Now here’s the catch — even though a lot of these parts are valuable, I’m
not really interested in holding out for top dollar. I’d rather see these
bikes get used in support of some sort of cycling advocacy. There’s a local
non-profit community bike shop where I could drop them off, no problem. But
I also remember a time in my life when money was tight and I had young
daughters that I wanted to introduce to biking. I’m wondering if any of you
kindred spirits out there in Riv-land meet that description, and might be
interested in working out some sort of deal for picking up one or both of
these bikes on the cheap. Professional bargain hunters and/or eBay
resellers need not apply — I reserve the right to be choosy.

[RBW] Re: 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-04-13 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Eric, I’m so glad you started this thread. I went through the same odyssey
a few years ago and tried the IRD seatpost and it slipped like crazy. Riv
took it back and stopped selling it because it was a widespread problem. I
want a bit more setback on my Platy so I’m going to take Liz’s
recommendation.

Liz - thank you SO much! I was led to believe during my search that I was
out of luck because most seatposts come in the-27-whatever size and not our
uncommon 26.8. Can this seat post really work well at only $15?!?

Much thanks,
Leah

I looked at their saddles just now and noticed the aluminum framed versions don't have a badge on the back, the name is engraved in the frame in small subtle letters. Does that look better to you ?

[RBW] FS: 54cm Gus Boots Willsen - Pick up NYC Only

2023-04-13 Thread Ronald Halili

Hello there!

Anyone in the NYC area (11229) with spendable cash looking to buy a
complete build Gus Boots Willsen in size medium? I want to sell mine but I
don’t want to ship.

Near new condition with less than 15 total miles ridden. I spent a lot of
time putting this together and finished building it late last year but
rarely rode it. Looking to get back close to what I paid. I will also
consider parting in groups. Price of individual parts and what I paid
below.

I am keeping the Widefoot bottle cages and accessories.

Best,

Ronald

Awesome! Based on J's post and the fact that you're going for the ATB

Glad to hear that gorgeous black Sam is still bringing you joy - I love

[RBW] Re: 173 v. 178 Crank Arms?

2023-04-13 Thread Stephen
My experience with crank length is that it is not very noticeable. I think
I have the 173 silvers on my appaloosa, have 175's on my ram, and also have
165's on another bike. I ride flat pedals all the time and tend to adjust
my foot position slightly throughout rides, probably more noticeable
clipped in. At this point I'd say I'm partial towards a shorter crank (I
like the 165-170 range, personally I would'nt go above 175) to avoid more
pedal strike, but it also depends a little on the bike. Shorter cranks
raises your saddle a little, but again, its all very slight. I think I've
even seen Will in a riv email say that crank length doesn't matter that
much/don't overthink it..

for reference I'm around 6'2 with a 92ish pbh, I ride the 60cm Joe.

[RBW] Re: 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-04-13 Thread Garth
That's a bummer about the IRD post, there's nothing worse than a wonky post
!

Yeah, a SA saddle sounds like it would work for you Eric. I looked at their
saddles just now and noticed the aluminum framed versions don't have a
badge on the back, the name is engraved in the frame in small subtle
letters. Does that look better to you ?

[RBW] Re: 173 v. 178 Crank Arms?

2023-04-13 Thread Garth
Save your cash .

I'd ask why are you considering longer arms ?

My experience with longer cranks(up to 185mm) is that they didn't live up
to the promise the crank length theories based on leg dimensions claimed.
Theories are theories after all. The opposite way works for me. Foot
further forward of the axle and much shorter arms(150mm) works brilliant
for me. Ease of leg speed and leverage. I'm not alone in this discovery of
course, it's just that it doesn't fit into any of the en-vogue formulas, so
few bother to challenge it.

[RBW] Re: 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-04-13 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks, Garth. Yeah, that saddle is all the way back in the picture!
Believe it or not.

I appreciate the specs here on individual setbacks, awesome! I've thought
about swapping out the saddle altogether, that's a logical workaround. I
have a Selle Anatomica with the long rails. Very comfy but I just don't
like the way they look! I understand that's illogical to some. And the new
SA saddles have that huge, chintzy metallic plastic badges at the back.

I haven't tried friction paste but I'm not trying another IRD post. When I
had trouble I talked to both Will at Rivendell and Jim Porter at Merry
Sales/Soma/IRD over the phone about my trouble. No issues getting it
returned. With others having the same slippage problems I'm done fooling
with them.

Some of the Kalloy UNO posts look to have a fair amount of setback, and

Just should add that the Suntour XC Pro and Superbe seatposts are so nice.
If you have a chance to run one I recommend it. You can adjust the clamp
and saddle tilt independently with two separate bolts. Requires less
finesse than other posts.

[RBW] Re: 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-04-13 Thread Garth
If that photo Eric is of the bike in question, well sheesh, that saddle
. it's already so far forward in the seatpost ! MB-2's have a minimum
of a 73d STA, so that only adds to the forward position in relation to the
BB. A Brooks saddle with it's limited rails + the steeper 73d STA angle =
you're hamstrung from the beginning in your ability to move the saddle back
enough relative to the BB. I forget the Trig formula but 1d of STA is
substantial in terms of saddle height fore-aft position relative to the BB,
somewhere in the range 10-15mm I think, depending on saddle height. The SR
setback post is a way to get back further, though not necessarily enough to
compensate for the basic design limitations of frame and saddle. A saddle
with longer rails could account for 15-20mm of setback alone though.

For reference, a Ritchey Comp 2-bolt 26.8 post(sold in Europe) for example,
has 25mm of setback. A Nitto S-83 has 23mm, an SP-72 Jaguar 25mm. Your
average Kalloy post has 20-24mm, though their clamps are often small
fore-aft relative to high quality posts. Thomson bent posts offer a meager
16mm. The Suntour posts were usually 23mm-ish, give or take. Hardly worth
buying a new post for a few mm's. In the absence of a wayback post, you're
better off changing the saddle to something with much longer rails for that
frame, if you're not deathly attached to a Brooks. If you are, then you'll
need very long setback post like the SR, or if you have slippery a IRD post
on hand, heck, try some anti-friction paste inside the serrations. Has
anyone who had them slip contact IRD or even Riv about it ? They can't all
be wonky all the time for everybody.
