[RBW] Re: New bike day: 60cm Sergio Green Platypus complete

2023-12-11 Thread BrettG
Yes, although I'm in range for a 55cm it would have required a longer stem
and huge amount of seat post showing for the same setup. I always go as a
big as possible with Riv frames.

I forgot to mention 2 things:
- The novatech rear hub with the stock wheelset is one of quietest hubs
I've ever used. Even a bit quieter than shimano. I don't care for noisy
hubs so was quite pleased. Hopefully they stay silent.
- The sergio green color is even better in person than in photos. Has a
certain "shimmer" in the sunlight I didn't expect.

I'm impressed with the parts they chose for the completes. I would have
picked the exact same stem/bar/crank/tires if I was building myself. The
rest of the sunrace and tektro components are an excellent value.

Seems like a perfect fit - to think a 55cm frame would result in 50mm more
seatpost (and the stack would be a few cm's lower)
This looks great, not to mention proportional and comfortable
Congrats!

[RBW] Re: Opinions sought - Platypus needs wheels

2023-12-11 Thread Ed Carolipio
Like Tim, I suggest spending the extra money on double butted spokes since
you're having a custom set built. Otherwise, I like your baseline
selections.
On the hubs, I personally would opt for the DT Swiss 350s. IMO it's a nicer
hub, easy to work on, tremendous flexibility, and gives you the option to
upgrade to the higher tooth freehub ratchet.

I’d opt for double butted spokes rather than straight gauge if you’re going
to the trouble of having them built up. Stronger & lighter for just a
couple bucks more.

Brett, Congrats on the new Platypus. I built one up this past summer (50cm
with 650b wheels) and have been loving it. I have to concur with your first
impression - not particularly fast, but supremely comfortable. And I'll add
"capable and sure footed' to the descriptors. It has acquitted itself well
on everything from big climbs and descents on the Blue Ridge Parkway to
light gravel and single track, all on 38mm slicks. It's a definite keeper!

[RBW] Re: Opinions sought - Platypus needs wheels

2023-12-11 Thread Tim Bantham
I own Velocity Quills and currently have them on my Sam. These are great
rims and will be perfect for your intended purpose. I would spend a little
more for the DT Swiss hubs and consider building the wheel with Double
Butted spokes versus straight gauge. I won't claim to be an expert on the
differences in spokes but for my wheel builds I've used double butted and
have been told they are easier to get the correct amount of tension. For my
inbound Platypus I'm going to use Atlas rims that have been hanging in my
basement. I've always wanted to put them back in action and this is my
chance. I picked up a Deore rear hub NOS for $35 and my front hub will be a
Schmidt Widebody Dyno hub. I'm going to use Sapim Race for my spokes.

[RBW] Opinions sought - Platypus needs wheels

2023-12-11 Thread Steve
When I built up my Platypus this past summer I borrowed the wheels off of
another bike - now I'm ready to give the Platy her very own 650b wheels.

The build is road oriented, intended mostly for day rides and maybe some
light touring. Currently running 38mm slicks but plan to replace them with
something in the 42 - 44mm range. The bike weighs a bit under 30 lbs and
I'm about 165 lbs.

I have a wheel set cued up with Pro Wheel Builders; Velocity Quill 32 hole
rims, straight gauge spokes, and DT Swiss 350 hubs (the 2021 version).
I'm also considering letting Velocity build them for me using their Racer
hubs instead of the 350s. Before I pull the trigger though I'd love to hear
what thoughts or opinions others might have. Thanks, Steve

2023-12-11 Thread BrettG
...wouldn't allow me to post all the info (too longer) so here some
additional info some may find useful:

- Roman told me this morning it does not come with a saddle so I think the
website might be wrong. Was fine though as I knew I'd go B67.
- Cranks are 173s (was important for me).
- Tires are 48mm (and awesome!). Never tried tires that big but loved them.
- The "lower end" sunrace drivetrain works really well. Not sure about
long term durability but I was impressed.
- Wheelset is "machine built" but I put it in the truing stand and it seems
fine. Will monitor these...
- Gearing - 42/30 and 11-34 was perfect. I used the full range and didn't
need anything higher or lower. I may go to a 1x11 setup at some point but
not for a while.

[RBW] Clean, don't toss, your dull German mirror

2023-12-11 Thread Roberta
Over the years, these dull. I always thought they pitted and the lack of
clarity was too much for me. I'd toss them and buy more. At $30 a pop, it
was a bit much, but I like the low profile of the mirror.

I went to Riv's web site to get another, saw this, tried the baking soda
with water suggestion and now the mirror reflects as good as new!

>From Riv's site: " After a couple years the mirror might dull a bit, but
can be brought back to life by scrubbing it with baking soda and water, or
toothpaste."

PS If anyone knows the size of this housing screw or has an extra one, I'd

Actually, there is one more "beater" that I might like to have back: my
first Rivendell custom road bike, a 1995 Waterford-built 26" wheel bike
that I later converted to a fixed gear drivetrain (ENO hub, Dremel, file,
paint). Customs 2 and 3 were so much better in design -- slightly shallower
head, longer chainstays, sloping tts and extended head tubes -- that I
felt little regret in chopping up #1; OTOH, it did make a very nice beater
fixed gear commuter.

Somewhat related, I drove my car to work 1 day in November because it was
wet and I didn’t wanna be wet, and someone hit my car in the parking lot. I
mean hit it hard. Naturally, they just drove off.

It’ll need a new front passenger side fender and the bumper repainted.
Figures. I'm guessing it's about a new Riv worth of damage. Just dropped it
at the shop today.

Re: [RBW] Re: 1st world commuting dilemma

2023-12-11 Thread Josh C

George - That does look unlikely to be stolen but not sure I can get aero
enough on the can…

Jason - I like the idea of saving more money and getting more out of what I
have. I’m glad that I didn’t buy a new Clem just to keep my other bikes in
the garage.

Roberta - I’m not sure that I’m “willing” to lose any bike, to be honest,
but the Atlantis is replaceable. Like that you’re using the Platy as your
daily. I too carry the NY kryptonite lock, but only use one. One through
the rear wheel/frame with a cable through the front wheel. I’m thinking
that I could also just leave a second at work, locked to the rack, and use
it as a second U without having to schlep it back and forth. I should look
into the pitlocks or the like. I know they exist but have never really
considered them for some reason.

Timothy - What’s your dream bike? We wanna see…

As for your locking method, same. I think it’s kind of the only good way to
do it. Lock through the fame/back wheel, then cable through the front
wheel. I guess a second U-lock for the front wheel/frame is always safer
but starts to get heavy. I’m heavy enough without 2 U-locks strapped to me.

Patrick - I started commuting on an old surly LHT that was worn enough that
most of the decals had been scuffed off. It did the job, and I still have
it, but I don’t really love that bike. It’s about as “beater” as I’d go
personally. I want to enjoy running errands and commuting on bike, that’s
the whole point for me. I believe that I’m on a 2” tire currently. The
Atlantis has 700x50 gravel kings on it which I’d probably leave be. I too
would like to see folk’s beaters and commuters.

Re: [RBW] Re: 1st world commuting dilemma

2023-12-11 Thread Patrick Moore
It's interesting to read of others' solutions. I confess that mine had I to
leave my bike locked all day in sketchy areas would be to use a beater, but
a *nice* beater, and this could turn into a "nice beater" thread!

I'll start: There are 2 beaters that I owned long ago that I almost wish
I'd kept: the first-gen Raleigh Technium which didn't feel so much spritely
as cushy with noodle frame (tho' heavy) and -- for the era, early '00s --
fat soft 32 cm tires. Then the Motobecane that I think Eric Norris still
has. Both built a fixed gear commuters with scavenged but decent parts -- I
think now I'd invest in better tires; even a stolen RH tire is "only" $100;
but Tourney centerpulls and Normandy hubs work as well when you are not
looking at them as Dura Ace, for commuting at least. I did some of my
cross-town commuting PBs on the Motobecane.

Actually, various top-model early '90s mtbs converted to drops would also
make excellent commuters with fat tires for dirt routes.

2023-12-11 Thread Tim Bantham
Roberta - Nice to hear from you! I didn't know that you had the same combo.
We are kindred spirits!

Chef- The Homer looks great! I'm excited about the Platy but the Homer has
been on my radar for a long time. Looking forward to building this one.
Mine will be the classic Home Blue color which I am just in love with.

Sarah-The idea of a mixte as a "girls frame" is only a construct. I think
it will be practical when I take it camping and no longer have to swing my
leg over whatever huge bag I have on the back of the bike.

Steve - I can't take credit for the "MOM" acronym. I got it from the Riv
print catalog from a few years ago. I think it may have been Will who
coined that phrase. It is a good one though!

[RBW] Re: 1st world commuting dilemma

2023-12-11 Thread Tim Donner
After building up a dream bike, the bike shop reminded me- "It's a tool,
not a jewel". It was a good reminder to enjoy the things you have as much
as possible. I totally understand if people decide to ride a back up bike
if that gives them a peace of mind. I lived in Portland for 20+ years and
bike theft has always been a huge issue. A few things that gave me peace of
mind

-locking skewers
-a Mini u-lock locked up ala Sheldon Brown
(https://www.sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.html)- happy to carry a heavy
lock (strapped on my bike rack)
-Always testing what I was locking to- is it a short street sign someone
could remove the sign from the top and pull the bike up and over? Is the
post a little wobbly? Is the item easier to cut than a u-lock, etc
-locking in high traffic areas, I feel within eye sight of windows is even
more important to me vs amongst other bikes. When it's crowded with other
bikes people just think- oh, that person is getting their bike. If your
bike is all alone it's more obvious if someone is fussing with it.
-not leaving my bike out at night
-Try not to lock up close to intersections (see below for why)

Once my bike was hit by a car (when it was locked up to a stop sign) and
totaled at an intersection- big nasty crash. The driver's insurance wanted
to give me pennies on the dollar but my renter's insurance came through and
paid me the actual cost of my bike! They didn't make it easy, saying if I
"keep making claims" they would drop me (this was my one and only claim in
years, which I reminded them), but it was nice to be able to build up a
similar, and ultimately better bike. Not sure if renters/home owners
insurance covers theft away from the home, but something worth looking
into. Definitely not the same since you might have special
parts/memories/hard to find components, etc, but I was so happy that I was
able to rebuild a new bike and it didn't have to come out of my pocket.

Tim, that is exciting news! And please post pictures because we need more
men on mixtes! Every time I find one I show my fiance and say, "see, this
is a great men's bike!" And he looks at me side eyed. Which makes me want a
"Men on Mixtes Calendar" Maybe it's a project for next year.

2023-12-11 Thread Sarah Carlson
Please keep us posted with pictures as your bike comes together. I agree
with Leah that planning the bike is part of the fun. Having people to
bounce ideas off of has been such a fun way for me to consider new things.
I've always been an Albatross/Billie bar person and am about to try Choco
bars for the first time based on suggestions. This group is full of
experienced people with lost of great ideas. Congratulations on your bike!

Re: [RBW] Re: HUGE Rivendell archive update: Catalogs, flyers, brochures and more

2023-12-11 Thread Ant Warland
Hi all, just wanted to say a massive thanks to everyone involved in putting
this archive together. I'm soon to be an Appaloosa owner and am thoroughly
enjoying learning about the company's history through the early Readers.

In case anyone wants to download the entire archive (all 3.2 Gb of it) for
reading offline I was able to do so using wget with the following command:

wget -r -np -nH -R index.html* https://notfine.com/rivreader/

Here's how I got wget working on my Windows 10 PC:

1) Downloaded the latest wget EXE for my x64 OS
2) Copied that file to my PATH directory (C:\Window\System32\) - note your
PATH variable might be different, check it with command 'path' in cmd (see
below).
3) Opened command prompt (click start, type 'cmd', hit Enter)
4) Navigated to my downloads directory with command 'cd Downloads'. Again
this might differ for you.
5) copied and pasted (right click in command prompt) the wget command above

This creates a new directory 'rivreader' and downloads every file and
folder from https://notfine.com/rivreader/

If you want to download specific directory only (E.g. Ads), use the command:

wget -r -np -nH --cut-dirs=1 -R index.html*
https://notfine.com/rivreader/Ads/

*Note *that https://notfine.com/rivreader/ has identical contents to
https://notfine.com/rivendell/ so either one is good.

Hope this is helpful,
Ant

Eric - that is a wonderful contribution.

I don't think I ever got a Cheviot brochure, and I have the
Hiawatha Holidays No. II, but not No. 1

I've got a few ephemeral bits and bobs, on my list to scan - just
flipped quickly through my box o' stuff and found:
Original Banana Bag instructions (similar in style to the Boxy Bag
instructions), some WoolyWarm stuff, a few one sheets on various bits.

There was also a tiny little fold-up products "catalog" that I have a
 few
of. A few paper Atlantis catalog handouts.
