Stephen,
Can you tell me the length of the longer struts? Also, have the shorter
struts been cut or just bent?
Thanks,

Your bike profile pic is as classic-looking as all get out Bill. Very

[RBW] FS - VO Happy Stem, 90mm

2024-03-13 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
(Please forgive the cross-post on the I-BOB list.)
I purchased a VO Happy Stem in the 90mm length and used it for about 50
miles. It has VO's usual attention to details and polish. But I found
another solution and hoping someone can make use of it now.
Details:
1-1/8" Threadless , 90mm length (resulting in 97mm vertical height.) 45
degree rise.
This stem is designed for 31.8mm bars but I can supply the VO alloy shims
(25.4mm-to-31.8mm) as seen in my images and listed on their web site at
$12.00. Yours for $6.00 additional if you need them. (I used them
successfully with 26mm bars.)
203g weight.
Additional info: Will not work with a threadless adapter. Long compression
bolt means no stem cap required.
As seen on the VO web site:
https://velo-orange.com/collections/threadless-stems/products/vo-happy-stem-31-8mm?variant=50655225223
Flickr images:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/albums/72177720315437684/
MSRP: $46 (plus tax & shipping) Yours shipped USPS at my expense for $36,
plus $6 if you need the handlebar shims.
Reply off list for questions please.
Thanks,
Paul Germain

[RBW] Re: I only have 1 chance to get a Rivendell.. which would you recommend?

2024-02-25 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Dear A.H.,
Welcome! I can't speak to the Platypus except it has wide acceptance here.
However, I do have both a Sam Hillborne and a A.H. Homer Hilsen. Both are
capable on pavement and dirt roads/rail trails, etc. The lighter tubing on
the Homer makes it a bit more lively but the Sam is more capable for
touring.
My bikes both date to 2015 and before. So, the Sam has Paul center pulls
and the Homer was converted to Paul Touring cantilevers. Both have fenders
and use 38mm tires. Both use moustache bars (for different reasons).
So, I'd say, "pick your poison" depending on the type of riding you expect
to do and what you intend to carry.. (And maybe your personal body weight.
I am 170 lbs.+ -).

[RBW] Re: Crankset/BB question

2024-02-17 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Adam,

I meant to add that prices on digital micrometers seem to have gone down
over time. I replaced my old "analog" PITA micrometer on Amazon for
twenty-five bucks. I would not go for the cheapest though. I opted for one
with an auto "OFF" setting so you won't burn the battery out when you set
it down and forget it.

Adam,

Just saying . If you like the paint job on your bike, be mindful when
applying muscle to the BB remover tool. You'll be using a heavy-ish
adjustable wrench. So, adjust it so it's snug. It's pretty easy to have
that tool come out and the wrench can chip the vulnerable BB shell paint
edge. Ask me how I know.

[RBW] FS - Vintage 1989 Brooks Professional saddle, brown.

2024-01-13 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I mounted this veteran saddle new on my (then new) 1989 custom Bontrager
CX. While I never raced CX, this thing went off and on road for 30 years
before I retired it. It's built like a tank, and despite the "Pre-Softened"
designation on the top, I barely managed to imprint my sit bones into it.
The leather is thick with very little give! However, it can be surprisingly
comfy for short (under 50 miles) rides. Maybe that is why Jan Heine chose
it as his go-to saddle for years and would always mount it on his test
bikes. (Until he began selling another brand.)
It is in good shape, with minimal wear, no tears or major scrapes, etc. The
copper rivets are exceptionally handsome compared to current, IMHO. It
might make a perfect addition to a restoration. You could tour with it and
not worry about rain! I can't see my using it as wall art if someone can
make use of it.
Chrome rails, which originally were anodized copper. When Brooks began
using titanium rails, I switched my five Brooks to that. (It seems they
have moved away from titanium because of a price hike.)
My measurements vary a little from what Brooks has listed on their web
site, so I will put their dimensions and weight in parenthesis:
W: 150mm (160mm) x L: 285mm (275mm)
Weight: 454g (540g)
Though eBay prices for these (used) are all over the place ($50 to $245 and
up before shipping,) I saw very few which looked as good was this one.
I will ship at my expense USPS Medium Flat Rate box (CONUS) for $60.
My Flickr images, some normal light (leather appears dark) and some bright
light:

2024-01-03 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jock Dewey, That bike is a vision of the perfectly proportioned bicycle in
my opinion. Uncluttered, though there is a place for utilitarian racks,
bags, etc. on bikes for other uses than the pure joy of riding. A lot of
thought went into it, obviously, from the quietly understated color to the
wheels, fenders, even the Acorn bag! (Great backdrop too! How about a
"Dewey bikes" calendar in 2025?)

[RBW] Re: Did anyone get one of the new Acorn Bags yesterday?

2023-12-12 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jon,
I noticed that Acorn continues to modify and improve most of their bags.
The "Large" saddle bags now seem to have gone back to the drawstring inside
(instead of the recent zippers) and two leather straps to hold the flap
down (instead of the more recent single shock cord). A nice new touch (in
my opinion) is the replacement of the larger and wider side pockets with
flatter zippered pockets on the sides.

Those new flat side pockets make the bag a little more narrow and
"streamlined," even a cleaner look. I never liked the larger side pockets
on my old Carradice bags much.

Though the leather "flap" straps are a bit slower to deal with than the
single shock cord on the flap, I think they lend a nice look, dare I say
"retro'? And a bit more secure, I feel.

My 2 cents. I have been a big fan of Acorn and their "MUSA cottage
industry" model. The workmanship has always been superb and pricing is
super fair. I've probably owned more than 18 of their bags over the years.
Great folks to work with, too.

[RBW] Re: Newer Sam Hillborne/Toyo Atlantis crossover

2023-11-28 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Dear exliontamer, I would agree with both Randy and with Frank about the
two bikes. For a couple of years, I owned a very nice Toyo (2014?)
Atlantis, hardly used when I purchased it. When that proved to be more bike
than I thought I needed, I purchased a new 2015 Sam Hillborne, single top
tube. The main difference is in the ride. I felt the fatter tires afforded
by the Atlantis did not make up for the stiffer ride. (I am 160 lbs.)
The Hillborne immediately was crowned my dedicated tourer and has done
numerous tours up to 7 days, on and off-pavement (rail trails) shod with 38
mm tires and fenders. It has proved to be reliable and comfortable for that
purpose and I would not hesitate to make it a daily ride. (My Hilsen is
somewhat more lively but not sure about touring on it.)
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/48959491076/in/album-72157711498338087/
Of course, tire width preferences have changed a bit since 2015 and I might
look at the Atlantis a little differently now - if I had not had a constant
problem with chain suck which I never got a handle on. The Atlantis took
wider tires back then with the help of chain stays which flared outward
like the old mountain bike chain stays instead of straight back from the BB
shell.

The difference would be tubing. Hillborne is a "country bike" not

decidedly more lively and plenty comfortable shod with 38's. Both are

I would say that which Rivendell works best (and whether a Rivendell at
all is the right call) depends on your randonneuring aspirations and
priorities. I have only done a half dozen 200k's so far, so I'm just a
dabbler, but my Hillborne is perfectly suited for me despite being heavier
and slower than a Ram, presumably. My only complaint is that they should
have put third water bottle bosses under the DT; I added my own. But I am
not trying to get a competitive time - I am happy being 9:30 - 11:00h
finishing time on a 200. I appreciate the 42mm tires with fenders and the
forgiveness they provide. If I was more competitive I'd probably dip into
the back catalog for a Ram, Saluki, earlier Homer, or Bleriot.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell paint color repetition: Your thoughts

2023-05-02 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Eric,
I seem to recall being attracted to the "Butterscotch" Saluki (?) way back
when. Though I'm not sure I ever saw one in the wild. I do like the
metallics being used now, at least what I see online. Like the new light
metallic yellow on the Homer (or Sam's?). Hard to keep up.
I must say though, when it came time to purchase a new Sam for a dedicated
touring bike back in 2015 or so, i opted for Black & Cream like yours. I
knew how a touring bike could take a beating. And despite being a fine
artist who has a huge stash of model car paints to mix almost exact colors,
given enough time, I have never been stumped worse than trying to touch up
my first early model metallic orange Sam. I think it was a two-stage paint
(transparent orange over metallic gold?). That proved impossible for me to
match to my liking.

[RBW] FS - Acorn Large Front Trunk Bag

2023-03-04 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I posted this on the i-BOB list a couple weeks ago, but no takers there. I
wish to repost it here and drop the price by $20:
A somewhat rare "limited edition" production run, black waxed canvas in
very good condition. I have owned over a dozen Acorn bags and am a
believer. Just a guess, but I suspect this model proved to be too costly to
produce for very long.
170 mm tall x 300 mm long x 140 mm wide. Two zippered side pockets
protected from the elements by the top flap. Six attachment rings. Internal
molded plastic stiffeners in front, back, bottom and sides. I have added
thin foam sheets inside which quiet things down nicely. Easily removed.
A slight circular ghost image of a P. Williamson "Goathead" patch remains
on the top flap. Also, a half-dozen small pin holes where small
commemorative pins were installed.
$80 plus $17.10 for USPS Flat Rate Priority box shipping, CONUS. Or if you
wish, I will check your zip to see if shipping can be lowered.
PayPal preferred but check is fine too.) PM me with any questions.

[RBW] FS - two Silca Vintage Impero frame pumps

2023-03-04 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I had posted this a couple weeks ago on the i_BOB list but no takers. Allow
me to try this group before going to the dreaded FB Buy/Sell or eBay.

A used Silca Impero frame pump in good condition. 60 cm / 56 cm range
(probably what would be called a "medium"?) White (cream). Campy head, a
newly installed but unused leather washer. I will supply two sets of the
"standard" blue rubber frame protectors for the Campy arms, but have found
these do not last long with use and have long since replaced them with
small clear plumbing tubing, which works better and is less ugly.
$48 plus shipping.

2023-02-28 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Russell, You are correct. I had a brain fart on the location of Tom
Oswald's businesses (bicycle shop and frame building). And that's despite
the fact my wife and I visited from Virginia over a decade ago to ride the
nearby Pine Creek Trail across the state line in NY.
Tom is a very nice fellow. And yes, he has honed his craft well since
learning it from Dale Brown (of Cycles de Oro in N.C.) when he worked at
Cycles de Oro. My feeling is that custom steel bicycles remain a bargain,
given the amount of time lavished on each. (That would apply to a custom
Riv too of course.)
Good luck on you repair search. (If you are near Boston, isn't that still a
hot bed of frame building?)

Steve, looking at your photo it must have been a very nice day to ride,
but yes, I'd like to see how it's like when there is snow. Please keep
 posting!

Randy, that photo looks like milder climate compared to your first
photo in this thread. Great that you had a chance to ride your cool
 Appaloosa.

Here are some photos from last Saturday's ride:

I rode at foothill of Mt. Ontake and visited Fueki-no-taki (Fueki

The waterfall is approachable only on foot, so no photo of the

Water freezes and forms giant icicles.
In the photo above you can see another visitor wearing a green jacket,
so you can see sizes of icicles.
You can go behind the fall, and it's like this:

Re: [RBW] Re: Jobst Brandt thought experiment: What would he ride today?

2023-02-02 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Eric,

Great sleuthing to find that 2008 blog post by Brandt. Wonderful stuff. I'm
not used to seeing him with grey hair like that.
By the way, am I crazy? Is that his chain hanging loosely between the FD
and the RD? I guess if I had just ridden up all those switchbacks I might
have finished by shifting into the wrong gears too. (Though he does not
look winded like I would be, ha.)

Eric,
I finally got to view your superb YouTube video - wonderfully relaxing! (As
well as informative, of course.)
I loved all the attention you put into the headbadge, too. You may already
know, but a gal in Philly, Jen Green, does custom head badges and does a
great job. (She works in bronze too, but maybe not brass.)

I had her make a Bontrager badge a few years ago for my CX bike that I had

[RBW] Re: Bags like the Grabsack?

2023-01-09 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Michael, ditto on the Acorn Basket Bag. While I use a Swift Sugarloaf
myself, I have a buddy who has an Acorn basket bag and loves it. (Somewhat
smaller than my Sugarloaf, I think.)
I am a long-time fan of Acorn and their business model - American cottage
industry and pure perfection on their workmanship. I have had a dozen over
the years. Nine in rotation currently, since I move some larger bags to
storage for summer, when I will bring out smaller bags. All but my mountain
bikes typically carry a front and a back bag.
BTW, I think they are currently phasing out their X-Pac material bags in
favor of their original waxed cotton. What's left of the X-Pac bags went on
sale and are priced to sell, including the basket bag. If you want one
better jump on it.
While many good bag makers have surfaced since they began production, these
bags are a bargain, considering the quality. If memory serves me, back then
only Carradice could match - and that company lacked models like front
bags, since I suppose the English are hardheaded about their saddlebags,
ha. (I have owned many of those myself.)

[RBW] Re: 22 for 2022

2023-01-09 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Drew, thanks for the complement on the photos.
As to the basket light mount, I've had two of these for so many years, I
cannot recall their origin. They were designed to mount to a frame or fork
tube and I adapted them easily for the basket. They aren't as substantial
as the current mounts made to attach at a frame fitting (like Paul & PDW,
etc.). So, at first I wasn't sure if they would be trustworthy. They have
proved to be fine and I'm sure I did not pay much at the time. Your search
may prove to be more fruitful than mine.
I looked at the strap on the basket side and one says, "CRONOMETTI" the
other, made to fit a different tube size, says, "ISSIMO," so your guess is
as good as my own. It is very likely I got word of this from one of these
forums.
Just out: PDW has a newly designed basket mount called the "Outpost Mount,"
made of metal (steel?) so a little on the heavy side but looks substantial
enough to be able to survive the bike falling over without any damage to
the light mount.
I'm headed out for an overnighter on Wednesday and hope to try it out:

[RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-01-06 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Takashi,
To answer your question about snow in Virginia, generally we get less than
we used to. (No surprise there.) Eric is less than 100 miles north of me,
but we are both in Eastern/Central Virginia, more or less. The farther west
in the state, the higher the elevation and that portion gets snow more
often. Though, most of our area gets snow heavy enough to send snow plows
out fewer than 2-3 times a year, generally.
Often, the snow is just deep enough to ride comfortably when fresh without
a fat bike. I haven't done this trick since these photos in 2010, but for
some dumb fun (and a workout) I went up to the local high school's football
field and rode around the field in concentric circles (ellipses, I guess)
on my single speed bike. The total mileage was nearly 10 miles!

Re: [RBW] Re: What's Good - Wide-ish/flared drops edition...

2022-12-11 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Philip,

Thanks for the comment on the Bontrager CX. Yes, I did find one other filet
brazed Bonty CX online. Not something Keith was prone to do. A very
practical guy, who believed in a useful, long-lived frame. (Thus the
gussets he would sometimes use in his MTB bikes.)
I do imagine he had never gotten a request for a frame with nickel-plated
or chromed stays and fork blades though! This bike has served me well over
the years, sometimes as the original 3x7; sometimes as my single speed;
currently as a 1x7 - before 1x drivetrains were much of a "thing". (I stole
the idea from actual CX racers, though I never raced CX.)
And yes, today I would never butcher any handlebars li that. It was done
out of pure naiveté. Getting to see what others were doing back then was
difficult. Not like today with the Internet.
What put it into my head in the first place was a 1987 article in Mountain
Bike Action magazine:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/48063895973/in/album-72157709086228276/
Once it was in my head, I could never get it out! Looking at it today, it
seems like "underbiking" but CX was limited to 32 mm tires, after all. All
this was before Grant and his "country bike" evangelization, which may not
have been ground-breaking but was certainly influential.

Drew, Philip & others,
While this is not a Rivendell, the bike does sport the Soma Portolas in
this discussion. They are on a Bontrager CX that I commissioned from Keith
Bontrager in 1989:
https://flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/albums/7215770445842/with/33876168088/
Ironically, when I built it up, used the original WTB Dirt Drops - also a
part of this discussion - with a custom filet brazed stem by Steve Potts.
(I'm covering all the bases here!)
http://www.cyclofiend.com/cx/2010/cx057-paulgermain0410.html
Being an east coaster, my only experience with the bars (and bar end
shifters) was a short ride on Jacquie Phelan's Cunningham Indian while she
was in Massachusetts for the first Ross Stage Race in 1986 -1987. That's
why the bars are truncated like that. I had figured on some tight trail
rides for the bike, but I wound up using it more for fire roads. (I
regretted cutting them, so did an update on some of the components a few
years ago.)
Essentially, the shallow drops make them more accessible for doing shorter,
more demanding riding than road stuff, in my opinion.

 Hey everyone!
I posted earlier about reach in converting to a wider bar and decided
to start a different conversation to get opinions on wide-ish, flared
 drops.

I like the Nitto Noodle quite well, but I think I do want a little
flare and I don't want to bend them myself. So what's good out there? I'm
tempted by the Crust Towel Rack, but I'd love to hear what you all like.

If it helps/matters, the kind of riding I do with the bike it's going
is casual rails-to-trails, some rolling gravel roads, but nothing too
 technical or serious.

 Thanks!
 Ben

[RBW] Hillborne / Hilsen: touring capable?

2022-11-16 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
In my estimation, my 2015 Sam Hillborne is pretty nearly the perfect
touring bike for overnighters or multi-day rail trail trips. I have a
Hilsen which is a bit more lively and a really nice mixed-surface riding
bike. (Yes, I am spoiled.)
I realize this topic has likely come up before:
Every once in a while, I wonder if the Hilsen would work for touring, but I
tried a sport tourer for loaded trips once. It was too whippy, especially
in the mountains.
It's a rhetorical question for now, but at 76, I will eventually have to
thin the herd. I'm happy with a dedicated bike for each purpose.

[RBW] Re: Your Road or Road-ish Riv Rubber Radius (tire width)

2022-08-16 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Eric, like many others who replied to your inquiry, I also land between 35
mm - 38 mm on my two Rivs. Admittedly, they both are used on mixed surface
rides, not exclusively on pavement. The 57 cm Homer Hilsen is mostly a fast
country bike, taking in fire roads with paved connections. The 55 cm Sam
Hillborne is my dedicated touring rig.
Some years ago, I fell in love with the lightweight, comfy and supple -
combined with a thin puncture resistant layer - of the now-discontinued
Vittoria Voyager Hyper. I bought a stash that is still lasting me.
I use the 38 mm on the Hilsen and the 35 mm on the Hillborne, both with VO
fenders. Inflation figures vary but I find my 165 lb. body feels best
around 35-38 psi on the 700c wheels and my mind would be a bit ill at ease
with much less.
I must say, while I love the black & cream on my own Hillborne, yours looks
much like a dapper fellow out on the town!

[RBW] FS - NOS Shimano M732 7-speed shifter set

2022-07-28 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Folks, Since this has equal relevance to the i-BOB list, I plan to post it
there too. (Forgive that please.) Never used 7-speed thumb shifter set with
cables, housing, bottom bracket cable guide, plus related cable ends, etc.
All in the original packaging, albeit a little yellowed with age. 5-6-7
compatible with a "push" 8th click.
In the early 1990's when Shimano introduced the "new" trigger shifters, I
stashed these away but eventually landed on 9-speed SRAM Twist Grips which
I use for mountain biking today.
It's a bit hard for me to justify continuing to hold on to these. I do have
one 7-speed bike, but it's a Bontrager CX converted to 1x7 years ago with
drops and a bar end shifter. When I went to the Internet to see what folks
were asking for these end-of-the-line Shimano thumbies, what I found was
used and scratched shifters (only) going for $54 to $150 on eBay. Mine
still have the original plastic covering on the faceplates.
Bike Recyclery had a set of NOS thumb shifters (only) for $175.
I'd love to avoid the craziness of the auction house but hesitate to
embarrass myself by asking too much from this group. I'm going to ask $175,
plus shipping for the set.
My guess is that the cost of shipping could be cut considerably by shipping
all in a Flat Rate box without the oversized original packaging and willing
to investigate that.

Ditto on Dravo. A nice camp with plenty of room (and large bathroom, nicer
than most). Check out the old graveyard and local history there.

[RBW] FS - Used Acorn medium saddle bag

2021-05-30 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
An Acorn medium saddle bag in discontinued light tan with darker brown
piping. This served my touring bike for some years before I decided to use
something more shallow that would not interfere with my rear rack when
loaded with the tent.
This served me well and saw lots of weather conditions, but is tear-free
and scuff free. All leather is intact and in great shape. While it cleaned
up very well, you can see from the photos is slightly discolored from an
attempt to waterproof with wax and my penchant for adding patches and small
badges shows as darker spots when the remaining areas faded slightly,
something all the cotton Acorns do over time. (Can you say, "Beausage"?)
I have had well over a dozen Acorn bags and can endorse them 100% for
quality and serviceability. (I have another medium in the current darker
brown on my SS bike.)
You can view this bag on their web site, but specs are: 3.5L, 8"w x 6"h x
10"d. It has a vertical drop of 6.5" from bag loops and is 13 oz.
https://www.acornbags.com/collections/waxed-canvas-bags/products/medium-saddlebag?variant=1113866272
Price is $44.50 (half current,) plus the USPS Small Box Flat Rate, $8.45 =
$52.95, by PayPal.

[RBW] Re: My recent "CO-GAP" 7-day trip

2021-05-30 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Kate, I love your idea for transport to Pittsburgh from NJ. You are lucky
to be able to roll on your bike with NJ Transit. I live in Richmond and all
Amtrak south of DC offers only one train a day with a bike baggage car. It
heads north to NYC on its way from Miami. I have to switch to another train
at Union Station to head west, and the timing is not always good,
especially when many trains run late. (This last one was 2 hours behind, so
we set up our first camp 30 miles down on the C in the dark, not a big
problem.)
I suspect those westward Amtrak trains for bikes also are limited too,
since we have occasionally Taken the train from Cumberland, Md. to do the
GAP only and also had limited options.
Good luck!

Pat in DC, You are very likely younger than I am, (closing in on 75 years,)
but my travel companion for this trip is also younger by a decade and a
much stronger rider than I. We both were glad we settled on 50 miles a day
and tried our best to schedule the camps accordingly. After more than a
decade of doing rail trail multi-day trips, three things I have found feels
proper for me:
1. A 5-minute break every 10 miles or so. Mainly to relive the butt and
resupply the tank with a small snack. (I rarely stop for a "real" lunch
unless it is some kind of coffee shop stop.)
2. 50 miles a day, riding loaded seems to prevent being too weary and
making the trip a chore. A little time in camp, even if just a relaxed meal
preparation is nice too.
3. No matter how fast I can ride if I have too, like making up lost time,
beating an incoming storm, etc., It's hard and unpleasant for me to sustain
12 - 14 mph all day. I seem to always fall back to 10 mph, unless riding
surfaces, etc. are perfectly smooth and level.
However, your schedule is your schedule and if it is inflexible, you may
not have a choice. Depending on your exact start and finish locations, the
GAPCO is pretty close to 350 miles (50 miles x 7 days).

bike ride from the Pittsburgh end and frequent the GAP portions and points
along that way that are fun detours and sightseeing.

I started riding on the GAP with my Rambouillet which doesn't have a
load capacity for self supported travel but as a result I've refined my
options for refreshments, meals and accommodations. My favorites are two
day rides from home, either out to Ohiopyle for the night and back or to
Cumberland with a overnighting in Ohiopyle and Amtrak home from Cumberland
at 7pm. It is the use I patterned my custom bike to support.

Last year I rode several centuries out and back on the GAP to take
advantage of the crowd thinning weather, my familiar trailside resources
 and the relatively level grades.

Good for you Joseph, doing it on a SS bike! It's fun to do it that way,
especially Pittsburgh-to-DC, since you can sit back and enjoy that downhill
from the Eastern Continental Divide to Cumberland, Md. The first couple
times, I was on a custom fully-rigid 29'er mountain bike towing a trailer.
I felt I was a big rig truck driver! Unfortunately, trailers have too many
drawbacks, including taking out your riding partners if you dodge a mud
puddle! Here's a shot of my Tony Pereira-built bike and rig from a 2011
GAPCO trip:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/6030487459/in/album-72157627412105198/
BTW, I still have the BOB trailer / Chris King rear hub adapters if anyone
needs something that esoteric! (PM me.)

Pat, I would say most of the trail towns' resupply points are open all
year, but not all. The campsites on the C are open year-round. Camping on
the GAP is trickier during winter, but I would say likely open until late
November - a guess. A better source of first-hand information can be had
from the various FB groups for both trails. Not uncommon for the GAP to
have snow as a trail surface mid-winter. (Can you say, cross country
skiing?) See my answer to Rich about additional winter closures.
By the way, as to extra layers, the C can be quite warm and chilly in the
same trip. Though carrying extra clothes and gear can be a hassle, better
safe than sorry. I find wool layers will pretty much cover all scenarios
and needs little in the way of washing mid-trip. Also, wool can make all
the difference in the rain!

[RBW] Re: My recent "CO-GAP" 7-day trip

2021-05-24 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Rich, you're welcome for the pics. I have done the trip 5-6 times in
many variations, so can supply you (privately, so as not to bore others)
with more Flickr albums, most with more "iconic" landmarks along the GAPCO.
The trails are seldom what you would call "busy or crowded" but this year
may present more trail traffic than in the past. That could mean sharing
the smaller campsites with others.
As to timing, both spring and late fall are probably my favorites, but if
you want to avoid possible cold, summer is fine, too. The C campsites are
along the Potomac, so a bit more buggy during the summer. They are free,
and each varies in capacity. All provide primitive water pumps (teated with
iodine) and a clean portajohn.
Both the C and the GAP provide enough shade to have relief from the sun.
Also, the GAP being mostly Pennsylvania, is both more northern and higher
elevation, so cooler. (Up and over the Eastern Continental Divide.)
The C can be ridden/toured all year long, but winter can present some mud
puddles. (There are efforts by the park in many places in the eastern
sections of the C to provide smoother and drier "pavement" - a hard
composite of some sort, which cuts down on the dodging and weaving around
mud puddles, which can get a bit tiresome if you're doing 50 miles a day.)
The GAP is mostly cinder, but can get soft during prolonged rains.
The GAP is open all year, but gets more snow and freezing temps.
Importantly, the main tunnel, the Big Savage, underwent expensive
restoration and is closed during the coldest portion of winter. (Closing
and reopening dates are provided on their FB page.) No good and safe
alternative detours I know of. I've ridden the section of the GAP between
Cumberland, MD, at the eastern end, up to Rockwood, PA for camping
overnight as late as Thanksgiving and the tunnel was open that late in the
year. It was fun but temps did dip to about 24 degrees overnight,
necessitating a winter-weight sleeping bag. I did it to say I could do it!
There is lots of good info out there for both trails and both have active
FB groups posting current conditions. Good luck! Have a blast.

They can be very helpful planning your trip, but give me a shoutout if you
have specific questions. Amtrak offers bike service on both ends (and
mid-way in Cumberland) but don't expect the end of service the West Coast
gets for trains. Usually one bike baggage car a day, not necessarily
convenient hours either!

Hey aeroperf, this is my third time doing the trip on the Hillborne and it
does just beautifully well. It's up to carrying four panniers and the front
basket w/Sugarloaf bag, tent on the rear rack top, as you can see from the
photos. It's pretty stable and I ride in comfort thanks to the Moustache
bars and upright Nitto mountain stem. I'm running the old Vittoria
Randonneur / Voyager Hypers - very nice tires which I think are
discontinued now. I like to tour with fenders, so I'm using the 35mm
version, but would run 38mm's without fenders.
As to the East-to-West version of the GAPCO, we liked it fine. The only
drawback is the 3-hour climb out of Cumberland, Maryland up to the Eastern
Continental Divide. (As opposed to a rapid and fun decent going in the
other direction.)
For those who have not experienced it, The Great Allegheny Passage starts
in Pittsburgh, PA and ends in Cumberland, MD and the C Towpath Nat'l Park
picks up all the way into Washington D.C. We did about 50 miles a day for a
total of 350 miles, almost all off-road except our start riding from
(Amtrak) Union Station in DC to get to Milepost Zero on the C and the
arrival in Pittsburgh to reach our nearby hotel. (We reserved a mid-sized
SUV for our return to Richmond, Va., which you can see in the last few

[RBW] My recent "CO-GAP" 7-day trip

2021-05-23 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
While I have done unsupported multi-day trip from Pittsburgh to DC (GAPCO)
a number of times, this time I accompanied friend, Dan on his 7-day trip
from east-to-west in the opposite direction. A bit of a new perspective on
the trails along the C Towpath in Maryland and the Great Allegheny
Passage in Pennsylvania.
I was on my Sam Hillborne, which is my dedicated touring bike, mostly. It
serves me very well for this sort of thing. I have a Homer Hilsen I use for
mixed-surface riding day trips and love it. It could probably handle
touring, but I suspect the slightly stouter Hillborne is more reliable for
multi-day loads.
We chose to go a bit early, the end of April, and were met with a variety
of weather conditions, from sunny (even hot) days to cold (down to freezing
one night) with a bit of rain thrown in for fun. We were prepared for it so
the cooler temps were welcomed.
The benefits - especially this year when many more folks will undoubtedly
be out riding these trails - were fewer trail users and more available
campsites and fewer bugs along the Potomac River. (Not that is usually a
big problem for us, even in the summer.)
My Flickr trip album of the trip is chock full unfortunately - for my own
memories - so I apologize in advance. This time around, however, I tried
not to duplicate photos of the numerous and more recognizable landmarks for
the GAPCO, which I have done before.

[RBW] FS - 43mm 700c Hammered Honjos

2020-08-22 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
After 13 years of use, my 43mm / 700c hammered Honjo fenders were
serviceable but looked ragged enough to replace.
Two years ago, I purchased a new set of replacement fenders (without
hardware) from Jitensha Studio in Berkley, CA.
I unboxed them but never unwrapped or mounted and finally decided to go
fenderless for a while.

These will easily fit 32mm tires. (See my Flickr images of my Oswald Sport
Tourer with the old fenders in use.)
The fenders are not pre-drilled to allow for maximum installation
flexibility.
I will include the previous hardware and stays, including PDW (Pacific
Design Works) Safety Tabs on the front fender stays. I can provide the old
fenders,
which are still serviceable and may act as a template of sorts for drilling.

Previous stays on my 56cm Oswald Sport Tourer are aprox. 345mm (front) /
350mm (rear) from fender edge to stay end.

Flickr images:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/albums/72157715593666532

I paid Jitensha $73 for the two fenders without hardware, plus $30 shipping
and will sell the fenders plus hardware (with old fenders if you wish) for
$50, plus $30 shipping.
PayPal preferred.

Hi Adam,
I wanted to share my AHH, set up as my mixed-surface bike. (Lots of gravel
roads west of Richmond, Va.) Yes, it has been modified for canti's, paint
color (powder coat) and decals by Brad Click of Denver, from whom I
purchased it in Jan., 2015. He did a great job!
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/46793762461/in/album-72157705950163554/
I use a Sam for my touring because it is stouter, but this one just feels
so lively under me! I can bomb down steep and chunky gravel roads without a
worry! 38 mm Vittoria Hyper Randooneurs for rubber. I added the older VO
fenders I purchased ages ago when Virginia became the new Seattle! They
keep the drivetrain cleaner!

[RBW] Re: Calif. Atlantis rider on the GAP last week?

2017-10-30 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Well, Doug, you have a Doppleganger on this coast! I'm not disappointed,
hearing that you plan a GAP trip with the wife sometime. You will enjoy it!
Combine it with a C trip to D.C. and you have some of the best trail
riding we can offer. I'm in Va., but let me know if you nail down dates.
Many Riv. folks around D.C., too, if you want company!

The GAP rarely gets too busy to ride, though summer is busiest, not
surprisingly. Spring or Fall - before & after the school year - is when I
like it best! They close the Big Savage Tunnel near the Eastern Continental
Divide for the worst of winter to protect it, but I've been up there for an
overnighter when the temps got down to 14 degrees at night, but dressed for
it. Many places along the trail to eat and do B's too!

Finally, AMTRAK has started limited roll-on bike service (the Capitol
Limited) between D.C. and Chicago, with a main stop in Pittsburgh, the
western end of the GAPCO. Also a stop in Cumberland, MD, the eastern end of
the GAP. If you opt for that, book early! We're not as advanced as you
folks on the west coast. I envy the service there.

[RBW] Calif. Atlantis rider on the GAP last week?

When my brother-in-law, Ian, lived in L.A., Calif. for a number of years, I
flew out to ride with him and his great bunch of buddies. (And visit my
sister, too, of course)!

One of those I enjoyed meeting was Doug P. who posts here. (I've been
preoccupied lately and have not been able to visit the Riv. list for a
while). Last week I was finishing up a Pittsburgh-to-Cumberland, MD trip on
the GAP with 5 friends. On the last day, Wed. Oct. 25, I passed a solo
rider on what I was sure was a Rivendell, headed in the direction of
Pittsburgh. The guy looked familiar, but it took me about 10 minutes to
connect the face with (quite possibly) Doug P. on his Atlantis. Am I
correct Doug? If so, let me know how you liked the Great Allegheny Passage.
(Despite hard rain all day on Monday)!

If it was you, I am miffed that I was not quicker recognizing you!

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborn

2017-03-17 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Carla, I'm a bit late with a reply, but I have had two Sam Hillbornes. The
first was a double TT 56cm, 2010 vintage - a tad bit too large for me. I
used it for rough touring and was satisfied. But, I sold it and bought the
beautiful black & cream 55 cm single TT and moved all components -
including the 100mm stem and mustache bars - and added low rider racks up
front. I love it! Still my touring / commuter. I'm 5'11" and weight about
165-170 lbs. By the way, the workmanship and paint was much improved on the
2015 model. The slight price bump between the two was well worth it for the
cleaner appearance! Flickr
album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/albums/72157656598945451

My vote: a BUY!

[RBW] Re: Has anyone used this bell?

2017-01-12 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Steve, I'm down near Richmond, but can attest to the worthiness of the
Spurcycle bell. I was a part of the original Kickstarter campaign. After
that, I purchased two more (at considerably higher prices)! Very elegant,
minimalist and a nice piercing sound that gets attention. These guys did a
great job of design, down to the wonderful packaging. With each I received,
I felt like I was unwrapping a Faberge' egg! What sold me over anything
else was the ingenious way it attaches without screws, nuts, etc. Most of
that portion is hidden away inside the bell, with only the slender (maybe
5mm) stainless strap showing. Clean! Treat yourself!

[RBW] Re: AHH For Loaded Touring?

2016-08-10 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hunter,

You may be able to have your cake and eat it, too. When I found my sport
tourer bike was a bit too wimpy for 4 full panniers and racks, I started
using a BOB trailer when I went a-touring. On rail trails (read: flat, not
always paved) I even used it on a SS ridged 29er mountain bike. It's a
whole different experience towing the weight behind, admittedly, and not
for everyone. But you might like it and you can get in and out of the
trailer decision for cheap - especially if you find one used. (I think I
paid about $200 for mine). I have an AHH now and think it would handle the
trailer fine.

I now have a dedicated touring bike I set up from a Sam Hillborne, so use
Nitto racks and panniers. Sold the BOB since it was overlap. But, it gave
me a chance to learn what I needed to know about touring and touring
equipment over the couple years I used the BOB.

Downsides to a trailer? A bit harder to transport depending on your
vehicle. Harder to get in and out of the bag(s) in a hurry if you need
something like a jacket. (But you can always add a handlebar bag for
snacks, jacket, etc., which is what I did). A bit more to store. Finally,
towing the weight behind can take some getting used to - both for you and
your touring partners following you and is harder to park, though they do
make a kickstand for the Bob, which helped me a lot.

[RBW] Ohio to Erie Trail trip

2016-07-02 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
After experiencing many of the Mid-Atlantic rail trails and towpaths, I
took the Sam touring bike for a 365-mile, 5-day self-supported trip from
the top to the bottom of Ohio using the *Ohio to Erie Trail*, which links
16 trails of all types and surfaces linked with urban and rural road
sections (including Amish country) through 15 counties and 41
municipalities. Temps ranged from the high-60's to around 100 degrees!
Challenging, but I had the great pathfinding skills of friend, Dan WIdner,
who did most of the planning and mapping. This was a great way to see the
midwest! What a great resource for that state!

[RBW] FS - Suntour Command Shifters

2016-03-04 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I purchased these Suntour Accushift Plus Command Shifters in 1992 for a
Bontrager CX bike with original WTB Dirt Drops. I used them (and liked
them) for a year before moving to Suntour bar cons. They are in good
condition, 5-6-7 speed and indexed or friction and are the equivalent of
Superbe Pro / XC Pro. Model(s) SL-CD01-R7 & SL-CD01-L. They are seen here
on the vintage cycling database VeloBase, com:
I have 4 images in a Flickr album:
I'm not really sure what these are worth but have seen them on flea-bay
used for $90 and NOS for as much as $220! If a list member can put them to
use, I'll forward them for $60.00, which includes $6.80 for a USPS Priority
Flat Rate box. PayPal preferred. Contact me off-list if you will. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Front Rack Advice

2016-01-23 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Michael,
This is probably repeating much of what has been said here, but I've had
experience with two setups. I found that the small Ortlieb Front Rollers
fit nicely on the lower rail of the Nitto Big Rack and cleared the
canti-brakes well, too:

I've since bought a new Sam and mounted the new HAR rack. Along with a mini
front rack & basket, things are working out well. The front bags sit low
enough that, in warm weather, I prefer to ride two panniers up front, none
on the back, just the tent on top of the rear Big Rack:

Scott, if you do decide to have Dave do the work for you, you can't go
wrong, IMHO. My Ellis SS:
