[RBW] Shiny front derailleur for 42/28 Silver crankset

2023-09-24 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
So, I just found out that the few months I thought I had to firm up parts
for an upcoming Riv-inspired Inglis/Retrotec custom is a little shorter
than that. When I got a call last week, it was to inform me that I was #2
on the build list, and #1 wasn't returning calls. Sounds like I need to
figure out a few things in short order!

I want to run a Silver 42/28 crankset but not sure what to use for front
shifting duties. I've used a Suntour Cyclone to shift a 28/45/50 in the
past but am not sure that's the best option. Maybe a derailleur intended
for MTB use would be better?

The key other criteria I can think of are that I would prefer at least some
shiny parts. Pure black modern components are a non-starter. I will have
either an XT or XTR on the rear, both with a mix of black and silver, so a
little mix on the front is OK. I'm going to be shifting with Microshift
thumbies. They use friction on the front, so no worries about indexing.
It's just a question of which derailleur is most likely to move the chain
in the smoothest way. Any suggestions?

Thanks all!

Re: [RBW] Re: Toyo Atlantis Update

2023-09-21 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'll agree with others, that is a very nice looking Atlantis! Which model
of XTR derailleur are you using? I thought most of the earlier XTR
derailleurs were grey, but that definitely looks shiny. I have been
hunting for a silver rear derailleur for a custom build, and new ones are
pretty hard to come by. Everything that will shift a broader range now
only seems to come in black. I just found out yesterday that I am #2 in
line, and #1 is not returning calls, so finding some key parts just became
more urgent. That might work if I can find one!
Thanks!

That's a really nice setup! I was surprised by the brakes, too. I thought
at first glance that those were from a fancy independent maker, like Paul.
I didn't remember the Campy MTB cantis being that machined/CNC'd looking.

[RBW] Re: Cycling shoes for wide feet?

2023-08-20 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Eric, I've recently been on a similar search. My feet are wide, though not
overly so. The bigger issue for me is that after a few years of wearing
exclusively foot-shaped shoes, such as Birkenstocks, Lems, and Altras, and
wearing Correct Toes to help with Morton's Neuroma, my feet won't tolerate
shoes that bunch up my toes. My big toes are the worst offenders and
cycling shoes commonly go for a pointy look. As a result, even 'wide'
cycling shoes that can accommodate high volume feet aren't generally
comfortable for me. So, please take my thoughts here with a grain of salt.

Bont has a wide fitting that has a decent amount of room but the shape at
the front didn't work for me. Many models (all?) are heat moldable, making
minor tweaks for comfort a possibility. I just posted a pair of those on
i-BOB after deciding that a minor adjustment wasn't going to cut it for
me.

I also recently tried a series of Lakes on different lasts. Lake's Sport
and Competition lasts in wide fittings offer a good bit of room but still
come to a bit of a point. You might find they work for you, though. The
Race lasts are available in an extra wide that has a good bit of volume
through the body of the shoe but similarly did not work for me. Lake has
also introduced a Comfort Plus last (Lake Cycling Shoes – The Comfort Plus
Last ).
They might win an award for 'least attractive cycling shoe' and the
mountain version I ordered won't win any weight weenie competitions, but
the fit is really good. The picture of the sole is not far off from some
of the 'foot shape' shoes. If you're considering the Stomp Lox, they might
be an option.

Specialized has a new last for their high-end shoes that they have modified
based on their in-house fittings. It showed up recently in the S-Works
Recon model (S-Works Recon | Specialized.com
). I ordered a pair last week
that I'm pretty certain are going back. I can confirm that they have more
volume than I expected. I pulled the insole out and used a half-length
insert with metatarsal pad to free up toe room and it's a...pretty good...
fit. But I don't want to pay that price for a shoe if the fit is not just
right.

Shimano has a tour last (LAST TECHNOLOGY | SHIMANO GEAR
)

that is supposed to be roomier as well. I have a pair of SH-EX700s that
should land tomorrow. I'll follow up if those turn out to be a winner.

Finally, you already found the Stomp Lox. I would have ordered a pair of
those earlier in this misadventure had Ron not been sold out.

Good luck!

[RBW] Toyo Atlantis fit question, and maybe purchase help

2023-02-17 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
A recent thread about the red 58cm Toyo Atlantis for sale in the Bay Area
(https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/d/vallejo-rivendell-atlantis-58/7578102714.html)

has brought back an old desire to have an early Atlantis. It's a model
I've looked at for years but never pulled the trigger. So that brings me
to my two questions.

First, I should fit according to the brochure. I'm 5'10" and run a 75cm
saddle height, which is the very bottom edge of a 58cm from that era. The
58.5 top tube would normally give me pause (~34/35" sleeve length) but I
want to run it with flat bars, as the red one is currently set up. That
should help with the top tube length. Has anyone of my rough dimensions
ridden a 58cm Toyo and can comment on their experience?

Unless someone comes out of the last question screaming, "Danger, Will
Robinson" we move to my second question: is there a Rivver in the Bay Area
that would be willing to check it out for me, hand over the payment, and
drop it at a local shop that I could work with to pack and ship it? I'm in
Pennsylvania and they state 'no shipping' in the ad. I'm happy to
reimburse you for the trouble.

Thanks everyone!

Thank you, Gabe, but in the interest of giving credit where it is due, I
didn't build it up. It came from Bill Lindsay. Bill has a great eye for
builds. All I added was the front rack and basket, which replaced the one
he had on but wanted to keep. It's definitely one of the bike related
purchase decisions I don't regret. There have been plenty on the other
side the equation!

That said, I'll echo another poster - your build looks like an enormous
amount of fun!

[RBW] Re: WTB: 26" Riv Frame for 5'4 rider

2022-10-12 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Mike,

If you're transferring parts, I'm guessing that you're more interested in a
frame and fork. But if a complete might be an option, I recently listed an
almost unused 45cm Clem L. I didn't put up a main for sale post, I just
mentioned it on the running craigslist thread. I should probably amend
that. But anyhow, if a complete might be an option:

2020 Rivendell Clem L 45cm (Small) - bicycles - by owner - bike sale

I just listed a Clem L for sale as well, so I borrowed some copy from the

miles). It doesn't seem to have posted yet when I searched craigslist but
the link from the email is here ( 2020 Rivendell Clem L 45cm (Small) -
bicycles - by owner - bike sale (craigslist.org)

). I didn't borrow the quote from Leah about the paint color but am hoping
that she can work her 'mixte match maker' magic!

[RBW] Re: WTB/ISO: Handsome laptop-sized pannier

2022-08-12 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
I tried a number of different options commuting with a laptop years back.
My favorite by far was the now discontinued Ariel briefcase. There is one
on eBay but it is well worn. That would be my recommendation if you can
find one. Attachment is typical Arkel, so rock solid. I think the rain
cover hides underneath. Once you use the flap to cover the hardware on the
back it is indistinguishable from a regular laptop bag. I carried it into
numerous meetings and no one recognized it as a bike bag unless I showed
them the hardware. Plenty of pockets to keep things organized and it has
straps to cinch it down for the ride.

J, really cool bike! You mention that the Cheviot feels stretched out for
you. How tall are you? I’m right on the line between the given sizing for
the 55 and 60. I think I’m close to Grant’s size (5’10” with a 75cm saddle
height), and I know he rides a 60cm. But I’m curious if you’re in the same
range and still feeling stretched.
Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Craigslist (and others) Bikes For Sale: 3

2022-04-18 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
This one is mine. I figured I'd go ahead and put it in the thread. I hope
that's not a foul! I have it on Craigslist as $3,000, but $2,800 for in
the family. I'm happy to drop at a local shop to have them pack it if
you're out of town. But if you're in the region around Lancaster, PA
(Baltimore/DC, Philly, Pittsburgh, up into NY state, etc.) drop me a line.
The previous owner was kind enough to meet me halfway between here and
Philly when I bought it, so I'd like to extend the same courtesy. It's
been a great bike for my son, but he grew somewhere in the neighborhood of
4 inches in the last year, mostly in the past few months. He's now taller
than me (gulp...) so time to size up!

Re: [RBW] Re: Your lockable commuter thread

2020-09-26 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Patrick, I apologize for the delay. I don't use my laptop often and I was
having trouble replying from my phone with the new version of google
groups. Yes, those are Nitto/Fairweather Bullmoose bars for threadless
setups. As for cruising gear, that's a good question. I suspect in the
60-65" range, as that's what I've run fixed and single speed in the past.
It's hard to specify a cruising gear with this, though, as I've commonly
either been pushed along as my trailer catches the wind one way, or held
back by it the other. As far as my position, I find that I'm a bit more
weighted toward my hands than I might like, but my trips are usually a
couple/few miles each way, so not a concern. It's definitely comfortable
enough for grocery runs or quick errands.

BBDD, I got in on the presale for my former spouse. I posted a WTB for a 45
that never made it to the list, then finally decided to buy the 45 Clem-H that
was in the garage sale section as a best alternative. I called and talked to
Grant, who told me that it sold that morning. Sigh... But he told me that the
presale email had just gone out (I hadn’t yet seen it) and I could get a new
Clem L within a few weeks for my son’s mom. So I ordered her a 45 in sparkly
green . She is very excited to be able to cruise around with our son this
summer!

2020-01-26 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Bill, I appreciate the offer of pictures! It you're running knobby 38s
with a little breathing room, I suspect it would clear fenders around
enough tire for me. More is better, but I don't want to sound greedy!

Do you have any thoughts you can share on the ride? I've read the Legolas
billed as a race frame, but have a hard time imaging Grant designing a
steep angled, high bottom bracket dedicated cross frame. I've ridden
something along those lines and really didn't enjoy it. The whole thing of
being so twitchy that it adjusted course every time I took a deep breath or
pushed up my glasses made it just exhausting to ride after a bit. If the
Legolas is race-oriented by Riv standards, but still comfortable enough to
take out for a few hours without feeling beat up, that sounds awesome.

2020-01-26 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Roberta, I'm with you. I'm not sure I understand the "hidden menu". I'm
sure Grant and company do it for a reason, but I don't know what it is. My
guess about pushing frames in inventory vs. made to measure is pure
speculation and being curious out loud. And I think you're right about
there being some groups of people that would be in the market for one set
of models and not the other. Until recently I was firmly in the "not
really interested in long wheelbase" camp. I think I'm starting to come
around, or at least around enough to be open minded about it.

I definitely appreciate your offer of a test ride! I haven't done a good
PBH measurement, but run a saddle height of ~75cm and am 5'10" (even if
that darn nurse at my checkup pegged me at 5' 9-3/4" a while back, I'm
claiming that extra quarter inch!!). I suspect the sizing would be off by
a bit, though maybe you've let someone my size test ride before?

[RBW] Re: Legolas Mystique: If Riv offered a limited time only, prepaid Legolas run, would you buy one?

2020-01-26 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Roberta, I wonder if part of it is a desire on their part to clear the
inventory they have in house. I think Grant has mentioned needing to pay
their suppliers up front for frame shipments, which is reasonable. If they
have a bunch of Clems and Hillbornes in the back and are waiting to get
their money back when the frames sell, Riv would probably rather people
bought those than a semi-custom at less than custom rates. Obviously a
semi-custom is better than spending nothing, for sure! It seems like it
would be a tough line to walk for them. Do they put the information about
the semi-customs out there, potentially pushing people on the fence toward
something that their custom builder has to make, or do they keep it kinda
quiet and hope those same people grab something off the shelf instead.

That said, I'm on the fence about the new long wheelbase Atlantis after
seeing the MTB video posted recently. I was previously turned off by the
long wheelbase. Now I'm curious. I'd like to test ride a long wheelbase
bike to see what it's like before throwing down money on one. But a
Legolas? I've posted in the not too distant past, I think on iBob, about
wanting a steel frame without disc brakes but enough clearance for 32+
(emphasis on +) and fenders. I think a Legolas would more than cover that
while being a bit racey, but I gather still not beyond what Grant would
design and not something that would wear you out after 30-40 miles. Anyone
holding one care to comment on that part? If that holds true, I gotta say
I'm getting an itchy trigger finger.

[RBW] Re: 52cm Wilbury (fancy!) frameset, never built, CL outing

2020-01-12 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Benz,

Thank you for the pic, and VERY cool bike! I was thinking the 52cm Glorius
frameset was a non-starter from the get-go. The one I was considering was
the same seller's 55cm (per the ad, maybe 56cm??) Yves Gomez. I can't find
documentation online, but I THINK that's very similar to the Wilbury from a
geometry standpoint. I've pasted in a picture below. The saddle height as
shown is ~69cm. You may well be right, and 75cm would be just too high on
that frame. If so, it certainly saves me a long drive and some coin.

[RBW] Re: 52cm Wilbury (fancy!) frameset, never built, CL outing

2020-01-11 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Ann, I'm not sure about maximum tire clearance, but I emailed the seller.
He confirmed that his PBH is 79cm, so saddle should be around 69cm. From
the pictures in the ad, it looks like you would have 4cm of room to drop
the saddle a little, especially if you went away from a sprung saddle (less
space needed from the seatpost clamp to the top of the saddle). He noted
that he is 5' 4", which was at the bottom end of the sizing range, but I do
wonder if you could make it work if you lean toward longer legs and shorter
torso. I'm not an expert on fit, though!! I wouldn't be in the market
until mid-next month, and am trying to resist the urge. If you like it,
don't worry about me, as you'd be saving me the decision to spend a chunk
of cash!

Benz, I read something similar about sizing, I think on-list. My saddle
height is 75cm, so would raise the saddle ~2.5 inches from its current
position. It doesn't look from the photo as though that would be out of
sorts. I suspect that stem could go up a bit more if needed. And at just
a hair under 5' 10", I'd still make the sizing range you provided. I was
kinda hoping the seller would tell me it wouldn't work. Maybe not!!

2020-01-11 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Mark, it looks like the same seller also has a built 55cm Yves Gomez.
Looking back in the RBW archives, I think the individual was once a member
of the list (may still be?), as there was an individual in CT selling the
same two bike/frames.

That said, the Gomez falls in line with my recent mixte curiosity. Does
anyone know how the sizing on the early mixtes works? I've looked at the
current Cheviot sizing, which suggests at 5'9-10" I'd be on a 60cm, but the
well discussed changes to Riv's geometry makes the current sizing
suggestions suspect. The other plus of the older model is the more moderate
chainstay length. Without rehashing BBDD's thread on chainstay length, I
haven't tried the longer wheelbase geometry but the earlier short
chainstays look much better to my eye.

Re: [RBW] Re: Can we talk about long wheelbases?

2020-01-08 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
BBDD, I think I've followed along in this thread and a few other related
ones, but to make sure I'm with you: the two bikes in your photo are both
set up for you to ride vs. one of yours and one set up for someone else? I
know angles can on photos can distort distances, but it looks like the
closest Clem is noticeably longer than the Clementine against the car.
Maybe 6 inches difference? I thought you were talking about a difference
that you felt when you ride or have to move it around, but that pic makes
it looks like a difference that you would clearly see just walking by. Not
going to say that I'm not curious to try out one of the long wheelbase
bikes, but that's a lot of wheelbase to chew on...

I agree, really cool video! I had the same question already asked about
MIT Atlantis vs. MUSA, but I'm also curious about the brakes on the rear.
I couldn't ID them from the quick glimpse, what are they? I really did NOT
need to see this video. I'd been "Atlantis curious" in the past, then
recently saw a pic of one with flat bars and got curious again. Promptly
talked myself out of it. Touring bike, probably not really suitable for
trails. Nope, now that defense mechanism for myself is out the window.
Seemed to handle trails just fine, or at least the kind I would consider
riding on.

[RBW] Re: Christmas Rivendells

2019-12-27 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm not getting my son a new bike for Christmas, as he got a new Woom 6
last year. But I'm buying him some accessories. I hope that counts! Woom
now offers frame bags made of denim, sized for their frames. My son is
always reluctant to bring his phone, no wanting to drop or lose it. Now he
will have a nice place to put his phone, a few dollars (Duck donuts is on
the back side of the park behind our house and a common destination for him
and his friends), and a lock. Woom is sold out of their locks so will have
to get a regular one. Maybe one of the folding locks from Riv? I'm also
adding lights. It's that time of year! Rechargeables are perfect, no more
than he will ride in the dark and just up and down our alley to go see
friends.

[RBW] Re: Economical Clem

2019-06-24 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
This thread ties in well with some thinking I'd been doing along the same
lines. I was originally going to build up a 90s MTB as a townie/errand
runner/occasional overnighter/occasional dirt road, double track, or light
single track excursion, then started thinking I'd get a Surly Troll instead
- easy rack mounting, super tire clearance, etc. I scoffed at the recent
Riv designs when they first started evolving. But the more I've read, the
more I've realized that they're really ideal for that sort of riding. But
they are too nice for what I have in mind. Who wants to have a super
expensive bike getting jostled against the bike rack at the store,
collecting scratches? That's what a beater like the Surly is
forright?

Then I started looking more at prices. Stock build Surly Trolls, Ogres,
LHTs are in the $1400-1500 range. That's almost as much as the Clem! And
if I'd jumped on the previous version of the Clems when they were blowing
them out (being a particular fan of the mustard color, which is apparently
no more), they were right in the middle of that range. Given the choice of
a Surly vs. a Riv at a similar price point, the Clems start to look a whole
lot more reasonable. Maybe I should get over this "who wants to scratch up
such a nice bike" thing! That's what strategically placed strips of cotton
bar tape are for on my old Kogswell.

[RBW] Re: Therapeutic effects of night riding and eating

2018-10-15 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
Andy, I could not agree more about the wonders of night riding. Not only
do well known paths feel different, sometimes they ARE different. I've had
a couple of really odd experiences riding at night around Lancaster, PA.
Riding through the farm communities outside of town usually means absolute
quiet beyond the hum of my tires and breathing. Cars are uncommon on most
the roads I use, even during the day. But at night you really get to focus
on the odd stuff.

I was once riding through an area containing little but farms, mostly
Amish, in late summer/early fall. Ahead I saw huge lights going in all
kinds of directions. All kidding aside, it looked like a UFO had set down
in the field. Even stranger was when I realized they were moving, and
heading toward the road. As I got close, the lights flashed my way, then
started moving away. As I pulled even, I realized that it was a HUGE
combine cutting down the remaining corn stalks. It had lights all over the
front to light up the field ahead like it was daytime. It must have hit
the end of the field and turned around for the next pass right before I got
there, thus the big flash in my direction.

Another late summer incident was even stranger. Again, going through an
area of farmlands in pitch black and quiet, I started hearing noises ahead
as I dropped into a valley. When I cleared the treeline, a whole field was
lit up like a Christmas tree, filled with Amish kids playing volleyball or
sitting on blankets and watching/cheering on their friends. The lights
were all run off a gas powered generator or two, which was what I heard as I
approached. As soon as I hit the end of the clearing and started into the
forested area again, the lights were quickly left behind and the sound
muffled by trees, leaving me almost wondering if I had just imagined the
whole thing.

Have fun out there!

[RBW] Re: Some recent Gravel & Grind Riv builds and a last plug for our Riv and B-stone owners Bunch Ride Sunday the 14th

2016-08-09 Thread 'Kurt Henry' via RBW Owners Bunch
My guess would be Gevenall
(http://gevenalle.com/product-category/shifters/). Really cool options
they've come up with. I like the thought of using one of the Shimano
Dyna-Sys derailleurs with a super wide 1 X 10/11. Not that I have any
plans to set one up, but.
