Gary, did you say there's an extra 55cm Cheviot lying around here in
Asheville? I could maybe help with that . . .

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Ride in Asheville NC?

2023-05-29 Thread Carl
Hi,
Thank you Gary for the update on the July 7-9 meet-up in Asheville!

As Gary said, we're planning a swap meet. We'll choose the location for
that based on how many want to participate and how much stuff you want to
bring. Could you let me know if you plan to do the swap meet and a ballpark
idea of how much stuff you might bring?

Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone in July, -- Carl

Hi Everyone, at the risk of being presumptuous I went ahead and created
this Doodle scheduling poll to see what (if any) weekend dates in May/June
would work best for a Riv group meetup in Asheville. Just click on the
link and it will guide you to a calendar that will allow you to select the
dates you are (and are not) available for a weekend meetup. After about a
week, I can post the results and we can either take the planning further
from there or else pick different dates and try again. Here is the link
 to
 the poll: https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/eXQgKnka

Steve, I agree that July 4 wknd would not be the best time for a
gathering as Asheville gets mobbed then. But if we can find a suitable
 date
I’d be happy to help with some organizing of the gathering. Seems like
 the
biggest hurdle is getting a date nailed down. Any summer date would
probably work for me, but I’d suggest late May/early June if we wanted
 to
avoid July 4. Not quite as many tourists here then.

Hi Leah, I still have that C Itoh. It’s gone a ways since ‘74, mostly in
its first 20 years. I’ll post a current photo of it tomorrow. It was my
Dad’s, but I nagged him until he gave it to me and got himself a new
Bridgestone Super Speed, which I also still have.

Is it enough to use the Rat Traps with a pair of fenders, is it possible to fit
a pair of 60 mm Berthoud on the NFE.
It looks like a very nice rig to use as a commuter.

Is it possible to run the Rat Trap Pass with 26 x 2.35 with fenders?
What is the max tires with fenders to squeeze in the rear and front of the NFE.
The NFE looks lika an interesting rig as a commuter for all round use with
studded winter tires and fat pair of slicks.
One rig to mention in this debate are Joshua Bryants new NFD

an alternative to the Jones with 650 B plus tires.

There were a ton of the NFE on the Oregon Outback and I have to admit I was
envious. Many were setup just like I had my Atlantis - front panniers, rando
boxy bag, and a saddle bag. They can fit 2.35 knobbies, or 42 slicks with
fenders. On the wet descents with the loaded bike, I definitely wanted their
disc brakes. I have Paul touring canti's with kool stop salmon and they were
all but useless when we got up to 70km/h with wet rims. The finish on them is
very good, and they're very light. I'm actually planning on buying one next
season, but keeping the Atlantis for the real heavy lifting.

and was a killer value for a domestically made frame. Highly recommend.

Otto,
For what it's worth -- Sacramento itself is a worthwhile destination, but
riding from Sac to San Francisco would not be at the top of my list if I were a
visitor. Sacramento is in a very flat river valley, it will be quite hot, and
I don't consider that area particularly scenic.
On the other hand, western Marin County and western Sonoma County hold some of
the most beautiful riding in the US, including the last 33% of Eric's route.
If you would like further thoughts, please let me know.

I haven't ridden that section but the Adventure Cycling Association has a route

Allright so I get in to the 108 - 130 inch with my measurments 54.3 X 31.5 X
11.8 inches (total girth is around 97 inches)?

With up to 50 lbs it would be around 95 USD with

Get the boxes down to avoid the next size hit, sign up for your own
account with FedEx and do it from there. Helps reduce the cost.
Drop it at the FedEx terminal. 130 girth is the max.
A package weighing less than 50 lbs. and measuring more than 108
inches but less than 130 inches in combined length and girth will be
classified by FedEx Ground as an Oversize 2 (OS2) package. The
transportation charges for an Oversize 2 (OS2) package will be the
same as a 50-lb. package being transported under the same
circumstances. . An oversize charge of $45 per package will apply to
any package measuring greater than 130” in length and girth.

you could use these, but you'd need a new fork:

 also made by wheels manufacturing.

I vote for option #2 that would seem like the most elegant solution.

I have never seen a setup that used 1 1/8th fork with a 1 quill stem,
using some kind of an adapter. perhaps something could be fab'd up.

unless your married to the fork I would use the King devolution, I
guess it comes down to which is more important to you, the existing
 fork or the bullmoose bars.

[RBW] What to do in Seattle and Portland?

2010-06-22 Thread Carl Otto Wollin

Hello

Now its time to go west again!

This time I´m on my way to visit Seattle and Portland in the third week of
September. Do anyone have any ideas, advise etc on what to do and see in the
area and where to stay in a inexpensive BB / Youth Hostel. I believe the best
way to explore the city´s is by bike, do you now where I can rent one?

I´m interested in bike and fashion in a Rivendell classic kind of way. I´m
looking for genuine stuff like Archival Clothings great flickr site:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/archivalclothing/sets/

I´m going to spend a couple of days in each city and then head down to
Sacramento and San Fransisco.

Thank you beforehand, your ideas and tips area greatly appreciated!

Actually, the Rambouillet is biased toward rear loading. I've carried a
biggish saddle bag and lightly loaded Hobo-style handlebar bag on mine for
trips exactly as you're describing. Fifteen or twenty pounds of gear
(including bags and rack/supports. Bike handled it just fine.

I don't have a pic of the Rambly loaded, but these are the same bags and same

I am contemplating a 10-14 day trip this summer using plastic and

need to carry a bit more than will go in my handlebar bag which is the
only bag I've ever used with the bike. I have another bike set up for
heavy loads. I know the Ram is not designed for carrying a lot of
rear weight but I was thinking that a smallish set of panniers on a
rear rack would work. Recommendations for a rack or should I go low
 riders in the front?

The closest you will get to that bar bag is an Acorn, www.acornbags.com

The bag they sell is smaller than the carradice above, but will work
better for bars narrower than 46cm. The carradice bag is a licky find
that comes up from time to time. One was for sale here on the list a
few months back, usually a couple a year turn up. The carradice is
perfect for getting 2 dozen eggs home from the market. And no mine is
 nott for sale ;)

RE: [RBW] Rack on Rambouillet

2010-01-24 Thread Carl Otto Wollin

Hi Steve

Thanks for the uppdate, so its a co-op between Rivendell and Carradice now I
know the story. How do you compare Acorns to Carradice and Berthoud.

Hi, Carl--those bags are from a brief run of bags that Rivendell had
Carradice make for them to their specifications some years ago. They're
labeled Carradice but they are Grant/Riv designs. They filled a gap in Rivs
bag makers between the earlier Gunsmoke-themed bags (L'il Joe, Hoss, Etc) and
 the later Sacksville models.

I guess Riv isn't offering a bar bag in the hobo, style right now (that was
Grant's designation for this sort of bar bag) but perhaps they will again, or
another company does something similar. The closest Riv is doing right now
is the V-barbox, which is a bit more square.

 Hello RBW

I can´t find that traditional looking handlbar bag in cotton duck only the
saddlebags like the Nelson and Barley. I´m looking for that convenient style
that do not need a rack. All ideas are welcomed.

Where have you bought those bags do you know if they are still
availble. I´m looking for bags in the same style.

  Peter White has them: http://peterwhitecycles.com/carradice.asp
That looks like the Super C handlebar bag and possibly a Nelson Longflap
  in back.

You can also get them directly from Carradice in the UK
http://carradice.co.uk/ if you can't find somebody local who has them

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Road Standard from 1996

2009-06-17 Thread Carl Otto Wollin

Hello Jim

Thank you for posting those inspiring pictures. What is the size of the frame
and what is the length of the stem? How is the Nitto Campee works with Berthoud
panniers. I´m curios to know because I´m in the porocess of building my dream
touring bike in same tradition.

Regards

I added some photographs of my Rivendell Road Standard from 1996 to
the flickr photosharing website (Rivendell Group) and I thought I'd
post a message on the RBW discussion group. I requested the bicycle,
during its original build with Bruce Gordon style rack mounts on the
fork, pinstriping and a custom paint job which is one that was
available on the first generation Paramount Design Group Paramount
bikes from 1980. The color is called Light Saddle Metallic, and was
 originally an automotive finish.

This bike was originally equipped for fast sports riding, but I've
recently redone it for light touring (thankfully, I had the necessary
brazed attachments on the original build, sorry Maynard...). The bike
has very close clearances so the mounting of Honjos is somewhat
compromised and really only works with tires of 28mm width (or less).
Honjos aren't really too necessary in Tucson, but they look nice!

I mounted the Berthoud GB2886 handlebar bag with a Mark's rack and VO
Classic decaleur, it has worked quite well with this setup.
