I don't find it that different. I'm still pedaling. The only difference is

That's a price above rubies, in my opinion.

[RBW] Betty's an eBike Now

2018-04-23 Thread Cecily Walker
Some of y'all might remember me. *waves hello*

Unfortunately, as my rheumatoid arthritis and vascular conditions
progressed, I had to stop riding my bike. I've missed my Rizzo so much, and
was thinking about selling her. I did add a Vespa to my stable, but it just
never gave me the same feeling I got from riding my bike.

A while back (a couple of years?) I asked whether anyone in this group had
any experience with converting a Betty Foy or any other Rivendell bike to
an eBike. There weren't many responses, and for a long time, I gave up hope
that I'd be able to ride ever again... until about two weeks ago.

I went into my local eBike shop, and asked whether it was possible to
convert my beloved Rizzo to an eBike, and they said that while it would be
a challenge, it was doable. I had to get a new wheel built, and I had to
sign a waiver about braking because the Betty Foy doesn't come with disc
brakes.

Today I am happy to report that a reputable eBike dealer can in fact
convert a Riv bike to an eBike, and I'm back riding again. Hooray!

I just needed to share my joy with people who would get it. Cheers,
everyone!

[RBW] How to sell a Rivendell Bike

2016-09-08 Thread Cecily Walker
As many of y'all know, I live in a part of the world where Rivendell bikes
aren't widely known. After saving and scrimping for four years to buy my
Betty Foy, poor health/chronic illness means I need to sell my Betty Foy
for something else - perhaps a Clementine? My problem is that I really
doubt I'll be able to get anywhere near the asking price for a bike that's
in darn good shape.

Do you have any suggestions for how I might make a bike with an $1800-ish
asking price more attractive to local buyers? I might go as low as $1500,
but that breaks my heart when you consider I paid close to $2500 CAD once
all was said and done.

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] An Amusing Bike Service Anecdote

2016-04-27 Thread Cecily Walker
I think they will. They have lots of good models to follow (Gladys Bikes in
Portland comes to mind) and it could be that I just caught them on an off
day or something. The fellows - yep, there were men working in the shop -
who helped me were really friendly. If I lived closer, it's possible they'd
be my neighbourhood bike shop, but they're too far away (a 30 minute ride
versus a 5 minute ride from my regular shop).

[RBW] Re: An Amusing Bike Service Anecdote

2016-04-26 Thread Cecily Walker
Ehh, it was OK service. I found things that they didn't do that my regular
shop would do. Plus, my regular shop is closer, and I wouldn't have to use
the car/bike rack to transport it there. If I hadn't heard middling reports
from other people who had taken their bikes to the shop, I think they
might've warranted a second chance.

That said, the shop where I regularly go knew it was a Riv at first sight
and were super excited to get the chance to work on it. Compliment my bike
and I'm a fan for life. :)

Re: [RBW] An Amusing Bike Service Anecdote

2016-04-26 Thread Cecily Walker
I'm no bike savant, but this neighbour has been doing weird things to my
bike now and again. The problem is I can't catch them in the act. The
strata council in my building doesn't allow us to keep bikes in our units,
and all the other bike rooms are full, so I don't have anywhere else to
store my bike when it isn't in use. But I am a lot more careful about
giving it the once-over before heading out now.

[RBW] An Amusing Bike Service Anecdote

2016-04-26 Thread Cecily Walker
I decided to try out a new woman-owned, and women-centred bike shop a
couple of weeks ago to have my bike serviced. I like supporting women who
love bikes, and after I had a pinch blow-out on my rear tire*, I had a
perfect opportunity.

My ex-husband got the car and the bike rack when we split, so he helps me
when I need to transport my Betty Foy anywhere. As we were taking the bike
off the rear rack, he said "If they don't recognize how awesome your bike
is, or at least comment on the frame maker, you know you can't come back
here, right?" I laughed it off, because of course being a store that was
set up by/for people who love bikes, they'd surely know Rivendell.

Not only did they *not* comment on seeing a Rivendell in the wild, they
misspelled it on the receipt when I went to pick up the bike.

And thus endeth my experiment with feminist solidarity.

* The pinch flat was caused by a jerk of a neighbour who has it in for my
bike. I think they meddled with my rear tire.

Two things:

1) When people in your community are routinely gunned down on a regular

[RBW] Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Cecily Walker
Now that I'm riding my bike more (thanks, knee surgery!) I've noticed that
my Brooks B67S saddle isn't as comfortable as it used to be. Maybe it's
because I need to toughen up my tuchus more, but I can barely ride to work
comfortably, and it only takes me about 15 minutes to get to work on
average.

I've tried tilting the saddle up and tilting it down, but no matter what I
try, my sit bones ander...sensitive areas really hurt after a few
minutes. Chica warriors, have any of you ever experienced this? Is a
different Brooks model the answer? I ride upright and have Bosco bars on my

The thing that really made me realize it was time was not being able to
ride my bike anymore. It was the last thing I had left (after being
diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis), and it was a huge part of my mental

minimum amount of pain. Things had been going downhill steadily for about
two years, but not being able to ride my dream bike (my Betty Foy) was the
event that made the decision for me.

2015-07-01 Thread Cecily Walker
I have an earlier model of one of these on my Ford
Focus:
http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/yakima-highlite-2-silver-hitch-bike-carrier.asp

. The bike doesn't sit in a well, it's suspended from the rack with ties
and other gizmos.

The best part was it came with a sissy bar that I can put on the Betty
(or any other step-through bikes) so I can keep it level with my
ex-husband's diamond frame bike. I've had no trouble with fenders, baskets,
giant Bosco handlebars, or anything. I've even carried a 42-pound Dutch
upright city bicycle on the back of the Focus without problem.

The installation, chassis work and rack cost us about $900-ish, but it was
money well spent.

experience with these to share? Do you have to put the top clamp around
the tire, or is it OK to put it over the fender? The Yakima rack
installation instructions specifically say to put the top hook within 2 of
the fork, which clearly rules out using it with any top rack, like my
Mark's mini. The Saris instructions don't say that is necessary, but the
video on their web site shows them setting it up that way. Finally, how
close together are the wells; is there sufficient space for Albatross bars?

I'm basically at the can't walk stage. The damage to my knee caused by
osteoarthritis was accelerated by rheumatoid arthritis over the last few
years, and these days I can't stand for more than 5 minutes at a time, and
can only walk a couple of blocks. I've gone through shots, rehab, and
various other treatments, but it was losing my ability to ride my bike that
really pushed me over the edge. This surgery's a last ditch effort for me,
and I'd be fooling myself if I said recovery wasn't going to be the hardest
thing I've ever done. I'm just hoping it'll all be worth it when I'm able
to happily ride/walk/stand/dance again.

the most fun or the most memorable...

 1) Most recently, riding from Seattle to Portland, primarily via gravel
roads and fire service roads. This photo was on a detour up to the Paradise
visitor center. Climbing up was brutal, but the descent...oh the descent.

 2) My first REALLY cold s24o. Rode about 2.5 hours on trails, camped on
the riverbank next to a friends office at the local university incase we
required an emergency escape from the weather. -38C.

 3) Oregon Outback! 600km of maximum comfort on the Fatlantis. I know I've
been saying I would write up a report, but it sounds like I may have a
report being published in a particular online magazine next month, so I'll
hold off till that's out and share with you guys.

 4) Solo spring s24o. Went for a leisurely and mild 40km ride out of town.
Then got hit by a blizzard overnight. At the time it wasn't much fun. In
 hindsight, it was awesome.

 5) 100km ride with my wife - her longest ride. We rode to her home town
West of the city on a seldom used highway. We stopped for naps, picnics,
beers, to say hi to the local farm animals, it was really quite a nice day.
This donkey really liked the atlantis.

 6) This 'treehouse' of sorts is my go-to destination for evening rides.
32km return on bike paths, making it a nice and easy spin to a cool
destination. I'll often sit on the roof of the treehouse to make coffee,
have a beer, or just watch the sunset before heading back.

 7) First multi-day tour. This was a few months after I bought the
atlantis and my first time riding more than two days. It was a fantastic
experience made better by the fact that my bike performed flawlessly.

 8) Single track in the birch grove. There is a large urban forest in
Winnipeg and this past spring I found a new stretch of single track that
would through this gorgeous grove of birch trees. It was warm enough to be
outside all day comfortably, but cool enough that the snow stayed hard

[RBW] Re: A Life Update

2015-06-04 Thread Cecily Walker
I'll eventually need to get the other done as well. I can't even imagine
doing both at once, though. *shudder*

I hear that as long as I keep up with rehab and have patience, in about 6-8
months I'll wonder why I hadn't done it sooner. If you can get it done
before you lose independence (like I have), I'd say go ahead and get it
done now. Canada's socialized health system pretty much dictated that I had
to wait until I could barely walk/stand before I got the surgery. Hopefully
you won't get to that place.

If Orthovisc/Synvisc injections are helping, I'd say do those for as long
as you can, if money permits. They helped me for a long time, until nothing
else could be done.

Good luck, Clayton!

Lastly, the time I tried to ride in snow. The city of Vancouver doesn't get

[RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-30 Thread Cecily Walker
Not posting my weight (not because I'm embarrassed, but to keep from
getting lots of messages about reading the Eat Bacon book), but I'm an
Athena, and I ride a Betty Foy. I use a Nitto S83 seatpost, and I ride on
38mm Soma New Express tires. No problems whatsoever, even when I was doing
longer rides over rougher terrain.

I know many bike manufacturers post weight limits to keep lawyers happy,
but I think anyone who is in the 300-350lb range can safely ride a Betty,
Cheviot or Sam. I don't think a Hunqapillar or an Atlantis is necessary,
unless you just really want one of those models.

I looked at all 3 from a Riv side shot , the ones they do against a wall

the same . The Clementine while not appearing to being any lower , by
virtue of the swooped tube it may offer easier entry for your feet to clear

tube on the Clementine is than the others .

[RBW] Cheviot vs Betty Foy vs Clementine Step Over Height

2015-03-23 Thread Cecily Walker
One of the great disappointments I've encountered as a Betty Foy owner with
physical disabilities is that the step over height of the Betty is quite
high - so high that I end up having to throw my leg clear over the saddle
just to mount the bike. It's not the most stable position, nor is it
particularly elegant for those of us who wear skirts on occasion.

I'm wondering whether the step over height of the Cheviot is somewhat
lower? I can't tell from the photos I've seen, but it kind of looks like it
might be. And does anyone know the standover height of the 52cm Clementine?

Thanks!

that I got my Cheviot 2 days ago and I love it.. Went on a long ride
yesterday (with my husband riding his new Space Horse thanks to this
group) and had so much fun. Should've bought a good bike years ago.

It is beautiful. Only problem is I refused to leave it outside and my
husband is not really pleased with it in the motor home. But my son
understood completely. He bought a used Cross Check last week and has it
in the house because he just loves looking at it (and he has several Rivs
out in the garage so it shouldn't be quite as special an experience for
 him).

I just don't have any good bicycle knowledge, although I've really been
studying up and know 100 times more than I did 4 months ago. So it was a
little scary for me buying this bike, but I couldn't shake the way the
Rivendell philosophy spoke to me and I daughter-in-law graciously let me
ride her too-big-for-me Glorius enough that it helped. I had to really
rely on Keven. He patiently answered all my questions, but really I had to
just rely on him and I would say the bike is spot-on for me. Did I mention
it is beautiful, - in a very rugged, sporty way. I agonized over orange
because I loved my daughter-in-law's blue bikes, but the orange with the
 blue highlights is just perfect.

As I said, I don't really know bikes but it was like a feast just looking
at the beautiful bikes in their shop Monday. The Clems and Clementines are
there with beautiful paint jobs. The curves on the Clementine are so
nice. Makes me want to buy one even though that would be the most
ridiculous thing I could do. It is a sickness. We'll be dropping by again
to pick up a few things - if there is a specific photo someone would like,
I'm sure they wouldn't mind if we took it. Let me know.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wheel Stabilizer or no?

2014-11-20 Thread Cecily Walker
The hub rack sounds like a good idea but (1) I'm only carrying a laptop and
maybe a coat in my front basket and (2) I'm trying to do this without
spending a whole lotta money. :)

On Sunday, November 9, 2014 7:35:47 AM UTC-8, Tim Gavin wrote:

I second what Matt's saying here. If you carried the weight down low in
panniers, it would feel a lot more stable.

When I first set up my girlfriend's San Marcos, she tried a lovely House
 of Talents basket
 http://houseoftalents.com/shop/bicycle-basket/asungtaba-bike-basket-368/
on the handlebars, supported by a VO Constructeur
 http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/vo-constructeur-front-rack.html
rack. She hated how much the wheel flopped with any load in the
 basket--especially her awesome-but-heavy Abus chain.

For RAGBRAI, I switched those out for a Campee Classic
 https://www.benscycle.com/p-2125-nitto-campee-front-rack-26.aspx, with
medium panniers on the lowrider frames. She loves how the low load makes
the front end more stable, even with the load unbalanced to one side or the
other (seriously, that chain is like 3.5 lbs). Her San Marcos now obeys
when she tells it to sit on its single kickstand. She refuses to give
the rack and bags back! But that's OK, because I'm paid back by her
satisfied smiles when she rides it.

Of course, getting set up with a front lowrider rack and bags wouldn't be
cheap. The HAR http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/rmf2.htm would bolt
right on to your Betty, as would the Big Front
 http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/r5.htm or the similar/cheaper/less
 pretty Surly Nice Rack http://surlybikes.com/parts/cargo/surly_rack.
There are other lowrider racks, like the Tubus one that Peter White has
 http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/tubus_racks.asp, but I don't know if
their mount points would match up easily to your mid-fork eyelets. But
 clamps work fine.

From there you could attach any kind of bags (waxed canvas is great,
waterproof roll-tops are great) or even buckets
 http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_GlsdABloJOQ/TBkVKXFdfKI/ACM/_oWNBycvU6g/s1600/Buckets+2.JPG

 or baskets
 http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/236x/da/99/92/da9992ed8733caf20f22024a129bb1e7.jpg.

 The Ortlieb hooks http://www.ortliebusa.com/ProdList.asp?scat=21 are
secure yet easy-on/easy-off, and could be attached to anything.

A double kickstand would be cheaper! But moving the load lower on the
front would improve handling while riding and while parked. Something to
 think about.

 Cheers,
 Tim

It was easy to make. I had a frame bag that I made, so I used that to
anchor and store the elastic backed strap when not in use. Mine is anchored
on one end, but you could make it with hooks on each end. The first one I
made was just a cord with hooks. I found it tangled in my bike bag, so I
sewed a strap to stretched out, weak elastic. It shrinks it in half when
not attached, less tangles. Watch the video attached all the way until it
stops for a demo. It's cheap, fast, light and unbreakable. Perfect for
touring and daily use. We must banish wheel flop!
