[RBW] WTB: XL Gus Boots or Susie

2021-03-22 Thread Daniel Jackson
If there's a big one of these hillibikes out there that you or your buddy
wants to part with, let me know.

Open to either frame in any color, so long as it's an XL.

Strongly prefer frame and fork over a full build.

Thanks,
Daniel in Vermont

[RBW] Drop bar on MIT Atlantis?

2020-02-26 Thread Daniel Jackson
John,

Bill I believe alluded to this, but there now seem to be two generations of MIT
Atlantis. To my chagrin, the precious geometry charts have disappeared from the
website and if you ask anyone at Riv about differences between generations they
either do not know (eg Corey) or will not tell you (Grant).

There was a time, about 2 months ago or so, when there were two different MIT
Atlantis geo charts on the website. One on the Atlantis site and one on the
full geo chart listing all current frame geometries. They conflicted with one
another. I called Riv with clarifying questions and Corey promptly removed the
geo chart on the Atlantis site from the original gen MIT Atlantis. I called
back asking Grant about the different geometries and how to tell whether a
given MIT was of the first or second geometry. He told me not to worry about.

So there it is. I believe that the current crop of MIT Atlanti are longer and
slacker than the original generation. The original are therefore better suited
to drops. Benedict’s bike, linked to in the Radavist article, is first gen and
perfect for drops.

Best,
D.

[RBW] Re: Effect of reach from changing stem length vs raising/lowering

2018-08-18 Thread Daniel Jackson
Sean,

I’d say the ramps are the primary position used by many who ride this style of
bike. Often traditional Rando machines are kitted with long reach bars like
those to which you refer - the variety of hand positions afforded aids in
comfort for long miles.

I spend about 70% of the time on the ramps of my Compass Randonneur bars. The
hoods are reserved for hammering up steep technical terrain and the drops for
fast descents or aero flats.

I have to get behind Philip on this one. Dropper on a fat tired road bike that
you hit the rugged logging roads with is just splendid. Nothing quite like
zinging around rutted corners on a big 747 standard diameter frame with your

[RBW] Billie Bar bar rotation at stem clamp?

2018-06-19 Thread Daniel Jackson
I've been experience rotation of my Billie at the stem clamp when applying
heavy loads to the bar ends - wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

I ask because of Grant's mentioning on the BLAHG about Nitto missing the
mark on the 22.2 bar end diameter; I'm wondering if they, too, potentially
hit under spec on the 25.4 clamp diameter, leading to the rotation I'm
experiencing.

Or, alternatively, at 190 lbs. with that long torque arm of a bar, I'm just
able to make it budge...

Thanks,
D.

[RBW] Re: Bikepacking with 38mm knobbies (Compass Steilacooms)

2018-01-04 Thread Daniel Jackson
Two risks come to mind:

1. Pinch flats. This will be mitigated a bit by increasing your tire
pressure but offroading with that much weight on a 38mm tire might just
warrant exploration into tubeless territory.

2. Your rims will take more of a beating.with the narrower tire. I'd
recommend extra spokes and tools for their installation in your kit.

Best,
D.

[RBW] Riv selection question

2017-09-17 Thread Daniel Jackson
I'll agree with Jay here - I think the Sam with 42s would be a great fit for
your needs.

That said - the Jones is so very versatile. I've got a Jones Plus with 2 wheel
sets. One with huge knobbies on velocity Dually rims and another with large
(2.3) slicks on carbon jobbies. And my oh my I race Vermont gravel just fine on
this machine with the light slick wheel setup. Sometimes I dream of using it
for randonneuring it's so darn comfy. At your size I bet such a setup would be
a wonderful daily driver.

One bike; two wheel sets.

[RBW] 4mm cable slips through drag brake arm clamp

Setting up the drag brake on my hubbuh and am findin that the 4mm shift cable
I'm using pulls through the clamp on the caliper arm of my Paul Comp Klamper
under high load - like braking. Any suggestions to remedy this? Perhaps a
tapered washer or shim of sorts?

Alternatively, what caliper are people using successfully on their drag brake
setups? Or Is there a way to put a 5mm brake cable that is long enough through
a friction shifter?

[RBW] Re: Hubbuh Gears

2017-05-14 Thread Daniel Jackson
Hey Julian,

Thanks for the reply. My main gearing question is whether or not gearing
preferences from a single machine translate to a tandem. We know what we like
on our own single machines but are unsure how to extrapolate this to a tandem.

Re: drag braking I was simply concerned about the safety of using a shifter
cable to actuate disc calipers - a big no no on mechanical lever driven discs.
But someone pointed out that the forces are likely less at any given time and
their application is gradual, which allayed my concerns a bit.

Thanks all.

[RBW] Transporting a fendered tandem

2017-03-22 Thread Daniel Jackson
Curious what folks recommend for carrying a fendered tandem on a car.

Considering the rocky Mounts R4 rack but am concerned that the front fender
will preclude mounting. Is this often the case with roof racks like these? I've
always used hitch racks with bikes so have no experience with racks up top.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Best,
D.
