[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-06 Thread David B
Thank you for the responses, everyone. I'm leaning towards getting a size
60 based on all of the feedback. I do envision running the Hillborne mostly
with flat or swept bars, and so it makes sense to prioritize that with the
sizing.

Andrew, your observation comparing the stack and reach of the two sizes is
really helpful. I'm thinking the added reach/effective top tube length is
small enough that I could compensate for it with a shorter stem length.

Really appreciate all of your help. Would still love to test ride a 57 or
60 if anyone in the East Bay has one.

[RBW] New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-06 Thread David B
Hey all, first time posting here. I'm planning on grabbing a Sam Hillborne
frameset when they go on sale this month. It'll be my first Rivendell. I
decided on the Hillborne as a replacement for my 56cm Cross Check, which
has never been comfortable for me. The short headtube puts the bars too far
below my saddle.

I have a pair of Billie bars I'd like to put on the Hillborne for daily
commuting, grocery getting, and some light off road riding. I'd also like
to have the option to use drop bars at some point down the line.

I went to the Rivendell shop a few weeks ago to test ride a few bikes and
get sized. I'm 6' with a 92 PBH (long legs, short torso), and based on the
Sam geo chart, my PBH puts me firmly in the size 60 Sam range. They didn't
have a 60 Hillborne around, so I instead rode a 57 Sam and a couple of 61.5
Homers with different cockpit setups.

   - The 57 Sam was set up with wide, swept back bars (Ron's Ortho bars)
and was comfortable. We did have to raise the seatpost up pretty high to
get the saddle in a good position.
   - The first 61.5 Homer was set up with Billie bars and was also
comfortable. The saddle was pretty close to the top tube, however - there
was maybe a little less than a fistful of seatpost showing.
   - The second 61.5 Homer with drops made me feel a little stretched out.
The saddle was raised up higher than ideal for my height, but the bike
belonged to a staff member who wasn't around that day, and so we didn't
adjust the saddle position. Part of me thinks it might have worked with a
lower saddle, shorter stem, and higher bars, but I'm not totally sure.

I left feeling like a 60 Sam would work for me, but I'm now second guessing
whether it makes more sense to go down to the 57 for a shorter top tube
length. However, the size 57 Sam has a suggested PBH range of 86-89, which
is 3cm lower than my PBH of 92.

Could anyone share if you've had a similar experience being in-between
sizes for a Sam Hillborne, and how the size you chose worked out? Or better
yet, is there anyone near Berkeley who has a 57cm or 60cm Hillborne you'd
let me test ride to nail down my size? I'd be happy to buy you a beer or
some other beverage as a thank you!

ride before I realized the stock saddle was easier to carry when folded -
$90 (claimed, pending)

(2.) Paul Moon Units – canti/centerpull hangers - silver – typical
marks/scratches from cables - $35 a pair – 1 pair claimed, have 1 more pair
available

(3.) Nitto Tallux Stem – 12cm reach, 25.4mm clamp, 225mm height – used,
typical scratches including a spot where I flipped my bike upside down - $50

175mm, no chainrings or bolt - $30

(5.) Sakae Triple Crankset – silver, 80s/90s make/model – for a budget
build – with chainrings and bolts, 130/74 - $20

(7.) Shimano Deore (vintage) FC-6206 – was black, removed the paint on the
outer side, still black on the backside of the driveside, 110/74bcd, comes
with a very worn 45t chainring and bolts for 110mm - $30

(8.) Stock Clem Saddle – these came (come?) on complete Clems, have the
handle thing on the back side - $20

(9.) Shimano Tiagra Road Brake Levers – some scratches from wall rub, but
otherwise in nice condition - $30

(10.) Shimano Tiagra MTB Brake Levers – short pull, silver, some shellac
residue and typical wear from a few years of regular use - $20

- $12

(13.) Salsa Silver Chainring – 42t 135bcd, used, decent condition - $12

[RBW] FS: Buncha parts...

2023-05-22 Thread David B

Garage cleaning. Been fairly content with my bike setups and haven’t felt a
tinkering need for a bit, so time to move on some stuff.

Prices INCLUDE shipping in US, IF you’re okay with my packing parts in
bubble-padded envelopes.

It’s been a bit since I’ve sold or been on this list, but I’ve been around
for a while if you search the archives. I’m just west of Chicago if you’d
prefer to pickup.

Strongly prefer payment via Venmo. I can do Paypal if that’s a dealbreaker,
but I’m set up as a business so I get charged fees and there is no Personal
(friends/family) option for business accounts.

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Tallux Stem - 11cm, 25.4mm

2023-02-15 Thread David B
Looking to swap up the stem on my Clem - originally built this with
Albatross bars, switched to Wavie which I've been running for a few years,
but the 12cm stem has always been a touch long. Interested to see how a
11cm would feel. Also doing a canti to v-brake swap so figured this would
be a good time to play around with stem reach. But, Rivendell is out of
stock in the size I need. So... looking for...

Nitto Tallux stem (the cold forged, 225mm height version that Riv sells)
25.4mm clamp
11 cm extension.
Interested in used or new condition.

whoops! typo on the crank arms. $150 - and I'll cover shipping on those
since I'm taking up more list bandwidth.

[RBW] WTB: Silver Crank Arms - 178mm

2022-05-26 Thread David B
Been a while since I've participated, so apologies for posting a
transaction-related post as my re-entry point, but...

During some swapping of parts I noticed some cracks in my favorite vintage
Shimano Deore cranks that are on my Redwood. Upon inspection of my other
set of the same model that I was going to swap onto my Clem, I noticed
cracks forming in the same spot of the driveside crank arm. So... time to
finally get some modern cranks! Good thing I caught this before they broke
through.

I'm looking for Riv's Silver Crank Arms in 178mm - ideally just the crank
arms as I have chainrings already to use. I am aware that Riv has the 178mm
length in stock as a complete triple setup, but I really don't need the
triple chainrings and hardware.

So, send a PM if you can if you've got some for sale. Alternatively, if
you're looking for the triple chainrings and bolts/spacers that come on
this setup (https://www.rivbike.com/products/silver-crank-triple-44x34x24),
I could order this from Riv and pass the chainrings on at a reasonable
price.

Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: FS: Random Parts

2021-06-23 Thread David B
Several parts have sold. I'm updating the list below with price drops and
adding a few other things.
If you purchased something it has shipped out and you should have received
tracking info - check spam/junk if you didn't get that - or reach out.
Thanks!
David

I've set up everything for sale in my webshop - treetop.bigcartel.com. If
you'd like something, please kindly follow the link and pay through the
checkout process. This makes a transaction a whole lot easier for everyone.
There's other off-topic items in there too.

Prices below INCLUDE shipping with conUS.
Questions, comments, concerns? Feel free to email me, but know that someone
else could pay/claim an item during that time.

So...

   - Shimano 6206 Cranks
    - not
pretty, but work fine, comes with 46t chainring, a detoothed chain guard
   and bolts - $30
   - Cork Grips -
generic, stained/aged to look beat up, but in perfectly useable condition -
   $8
   - Cantilever Brake Set
    - older, I
think Chang Star, look very similar to the new DC canti's - $16
   - SR Chromoly Quill Stem
    -
not pretty, but gets bars out there - 140mm, 15 degree rise, 25.4mm - $16
   - Norco Pannier Pair
    - I
modified these to be easier to install - similar to Swift Industries short
stack panniers (older, discontinued design) - $60

[RBW] FS: Random Parts

2021-06-21 Thread David B
While I've been quiet in this group, I've been riding my Riv's quite a bit,
which was my goal to dial in and stop tinkering with my Clem and Redwood.
Those are set up perfectly now, and my other bike, a folding bike that
doubles as a tandem/trail-a-bike setup, and I got rid of a beater bike. So,
here's some things for sale.

So...

   - Nitto Jitensha Bar B2522
    - used,
   nice condition - $35
   - Nitto B206 Handlebar
    - used,
   nice condition - $25
   - IRD Threadless Stem

   - 26.0, 120mm, +/- 17 degrees - $25
   - Shimano 6206 Cranks
    - not
pretty, but work fine - $35
   - VP Vice Pedals -
dark gray - used, nice condition - $30
   - Cork Grips -
generic, stained/aged to look beat up, but in perfectly useable condition -
   $8
   - Cantilever Brake Set
    - older, I
think Chang Star, look very similar to the new DC canti's - $20
   - B Dynamo Light
    - Eyc
   T - $25
   - SR Chromoly Quill Stem
    -
not pretty, but gets bars out there - 140mm, 15 degree rise, 25.4mm - $20
   - 1" Headset Centerpull/Canti Brake Cable hanger

-
I think new, but kicked around parts bin a bit - $7
   - Dia Compe Brake Levers
    -
short-pull, not pretty but worked fine on a beater - $10
   - Norco Pannier Pair
    - I
modified these to be easier to install - similar to Swift Industries short
stack panniers (older, discontinued design) - $60

[RBW] Re: FS: Tires/Small Parts - Nitto Struts, Frame Pumps, .

2021-05-08 Thread David B
Frame pumps and Gravelking tires are sold. Some interest on the brake
levers - so they may sell as well, but I'll include them in the list below.
I've reached out to Matthew off-list.
Feel free to reach out off-list if you're interested in something just in
case a bundle deal doesn't materialize.
Thanks,
David

Remaining items:
1. Nitto Rack Struts - 12cm, pair, appear to be new - $6

2. Nitto Rack Struct - 18cm, pair, appear to be new - $8

3. Nitto Rack Struts - 39cm, pair, appear to be used, but are nice and
straight - $14

6. Suntour Aero Road Brake Levers - came on my Redwood when I bought it
used many years ago - these feel slightly different in hand than Shimano
levers, feel more like a non-aero in a good way, I think they're an Alpha
Cyclone series, if that existed - $25

7. Vee Rubber V12 Tires - 29 x 1.95, used, some tread wear, but lots of
wear still left in them, had these on my Clem when it was setup as a kid
hauler - $10 pair

8. Maxxis Ardent Tires - tan sidewalls, 29 x 2.4", I briefly swapped this
in on my Clem for more rough stuff - $40

10. GearClamp - these:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/cassettes/products/gear-clamp-ss - but
a PAIR for $20

for a bit.
Both are size XXL.

[RBW] Clem's mount for rear wheel lock.

2021-04-14 Thread David B
I purchased my Clem in the first round pre-sale, and up until now I haven't
thought about the mounts for a Dutch-style rear wheel lock. However, I'm
seeing some use for it now, with short trips within my neighborhood. Really
just for running in somewhere for a few seconds with bike in view.
Anyone used one on a Clem? Your thoughts on whether it's 'worth' it or not?
Max tire/fender clearance?
Thanks,
David

[RBW] Hub Area Rack (HAR) Bag Information Request.

2021-04-06 Thread David B
After waiting for what seemed like a very long time, the Hub Area racks
were restocked a while back and luckily I snagged one out of what must've
been a small batch that were available as they sold out within a day.

My request is about the bags that originally accompanied this rack. First
off, I'm a hobby bag maker, so I'll be making my own bags. I am not
interested in buying the Sackville bags.
My request is more about the original size of these bags so I'm sticking to
a similarly sized bag, as Rivendell had designed the rack for.
I know the bags have a neat pocket that slides into the bottom of the rack
to secure it.

I am wondering if someone might point me to detailed photos, or perhaps
somewhere that has a little info. Even better if someone has the bags and
would be able to measure the dimensions and maybe send a photo or two.

Please note that I would not be making this request if Rivendell were still
making and selling these, but it seems like these won't be made again. I
also have no intention of selling bags for this rack either - just making a
pair for my own use. They'll be going on this
bike: https://www.instagram.com/p/CMNYBW9lbWk/

Thanks,
David

Just one bump and lower, then I'll let this simmer.
$900 for frame/fork, and King headset. Fully lugged, Toyo-made for the same
price as a Roadini.
I understand this could take a while to find the right buyer - that's
perfectly fine.
I'll update this thread when the frameset sells, so if you're reading this
months in the future and are interested, send me a message.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] FS: 650b Dynamo Wheelset - Pacenti 48mm Tires - $350 plus shipping

2021-03-15 Thread David B
Starting to part out my Redwood (still available) - offering up this wheel
set.

650b Dynamo Wheelset.
Built by me - I'm not a professional wheel builder, but I've likely built
50+ wheels - possibly more, I haven't kept track, but I build all of my own
wheels and built a bunch of wheels when I used to rebuild and sell older
frames. That is to say, I'm very comfortable building wheels at this point.

Hubs: SP PV-8 dynamo hub, Shimano RS400 rear hub, 11s, 130mm (cup/cone, so
can easily be re-spaced to 135mm)
Spokes: 36 per wheel, stainless steel, 2.0
Rims: Alex DM18, silver, adapters for presto valve tubes
Tires: Pacenti Pari Moto 48mm, black wall, with tubes

$350 plus shipping/packing materials.
Local pickup in Chicagoland area highly preferred - can meet within
reasonable distance.
Can ship - shipping would be actual BikeFlights or ShipBike rate plus $16
for a box.

Send me a message off list if you're interested.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Redwood Frameset - 65cm - $1000 plus shipping/packing

2021-03-13 Thread David B
This has been a long time coming, but I've been riding my Clem a lot lately
and it suites my riding needs perfectly so my Redwood has not been ridden
in a long while so it's time to move it on, or at least offer it up. This
is not a financially-motivated sale, so I'll hang on to it as long as need
be before it sells.

The Redwood name and color was reserved for the larger 2 sizes of the
Romulus run, which was a slightly less fancy version of the Rambouillet.
Fully lugged, Toyo built.
The color is beautiful and the paint is in great condition.
65cm frame - geometry and info
here: http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/romulus/redflyer/04.html

It will fit up to 38mm 700c tires OR up to 47mm 650b tires. As a 700c bike,
it easily fits 32mm tires plus fenders.
With Mafac Raids I was able to fit full fenders on top of 47mm 650b tires.
For 650b, Tektro long reach brakes also work with slots filed slightly to
extend the brake reach - I have a set of these that fit that I would sell
if you're interested in running 650b.

arrangements with and they take it from there.

Just a heads up for those waiting for a Nitto Hub Area rack. Rivendell has

and I have one ordered.

[RBW] Re: mounting sunrace shifter on stem

2021-02-10 Thread David B
And to add, the Sunrace thumb shifter can be mounted directly to the quill
of the stem (I did this prior to the headset setup) - no need for a
different shifter mount as quill stem and bar diameters are the same.

[RBW] Re: mounting sunrace shifter on stem

2021-02-10 Thread David B
Not exactly the question you asked, but if you have space in the headset
area, the Riv thumb shifter can be mounted as a headset spacer, so not
attached to the stem quill, but in the same general area. I did this so I
can swap handlebar setups without changing shifters.

[RBW] FS: Bagmaking Supplies

2020-12-16 Thread David B
I posted this to iBOB but in case you're not on that list - figured some
might possibly be interested in a winter project...

Potentially OT (feel free to let me know) but I have some bag making
supplies I'd like to free from my workshop. I've been making bike bags for
several years now, which has led to leather working as I need to collect
tools for the leather I use on my bags. My focus for the past couple years
has turned towards non-cycling bags and leather goods, however I do make
bike bags occasionally.
Over the years I've tried out different materials and have collected
supplies that I don't see myself using anytime soon, or that I simply have
too much of.

So... if you're looking for a project or new hobby for the winter, I might
have some things you could use at (what I think) are decent prices for
small quantities.

I've set up everything in my webshop - this is a whole lot easier than
managing PMs - and gets everyone a record of the transaction.

Everything I'm listing is specifically for making bike bags - either more
modern bags or traditional canvas/leather bags.

A link to everything available is here:
https://treetop.bigcartel.com/category/craft-supplies
Most smaller items have $4 flat/combined shipping. Items range from $.50 to
$10 (I think).
If you're looking for something else, I may have it - feel free to send a
message.

Supplies include:
XPac X10 Cotton Duck Fabric Pieces - 2 dark gray, 1 brown
Black Waxed Canvas Fabric - #10 Martexin Original Wax - several pieces
Fairfield Navy Canvas Fabric - WR #8 - several pieces
1" Poly Webbing
1" Side Release Buckles
3" Poly Webbing
Toestrap Buckles
1" Carrying Straps Hooks
Leather Strips for making mounting straps or bag reinforcements

[RBW] WTB: Nitto MF-2 - Mark's Hub Area Rack

2020-12-07 Thread David B
I've signed up for a Riv in-stock notification for a while now - thinking

won't at all.

So, wondering if anyone has one of these rack's they'd be interested in
selling. It would finish off my Clem nicely.

2020-11-18 Thread David B
Kids are outgrowing this one and we're switching over to tag-a-long bikes,
so no need for this to just sit in the garage.

Yepp Maxi Easyfit Rear Seat - gray
Steco 'Power Safety Carrier' Rear Rack - silver, burly steel, has Easyfit
window so seat mounts directly to rack

Both used on my Clem for a few years. Photo on my Clem from a couple years
ago (same condition overall now):
https://www.instagram.com/p/BjgPAmzBkDe/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Selling both together. Shipping won't be cheap, but I do have a box ready
to go.
$140 plus shipping for the set.
Contact off list if you can.
Paypal for payment.

Pickup near River Grove, IL is an option - though please make arrangements
to pay first with PayPal, and pickup within a week - doing some garage work
so clearing things out.

Thanks,
David

[RBW] FS: Nitto Tallux Stem - 50mm/26.0mm - $72 shipped

2020-10-31 Thread David B
I'm setting up my Clem with Crust Shaka bars and overestimated the
shortness of stem reach that I'd need. My Clem's a first generation before
the top tube got a bit longer, so apparently I didn't need as short of stem
as I needed. Good though for drop bars on long top-tube'd bikes. If this
was a current generation Clem - this is what I'd need. Would be nice with
Albastache bars or wider drops. I've tracked down the correct stem that I
need so looking to sell this outright - no trades.

So... for sale...
Nitto Tallux Stem
26.0mm clamp
50mm reach
Greased the quill and installed after receiving this yesterday, and ridden
a few times in my alley before realizing it was too short for my liking
with this bar combo.

Looks like I got one of the last ones in stock as Rivendell appears to be
out of stock of this size at the moment.

Asking $72 shipped. A few bucks off Riv's price and free conUS shipping.
Happy to ship other places to - with shipping be adjusted as appropriate.
Contact off list please - if that's an issue, contact through my webshop -

[RBW] WTB: 45t 110bcd Chainring

2020-10-22 Thread David B
Searching for a 45t 110bcd chainring.

I've found a 'magic' gear to single speed my Redwood without a chain
tensioner, and now have to work around tooth counts to get a gear that I
want, which involves me needing a 45t chainring.

I know Riv has sold odd-tooth chainrings in the recent past (43t for sure),
but vaguely think I saw a 45t some time back. I could be mis-remembering
this though.

So, either way, looking for a chainring with the following criteria:
110bcd
Silver preferred
45 teeth
Any brand would be fine

Contact off list if you can - or send an email through my webshop contact
form (https://treetop.bigcartel.com/contact) if you can't reply using this
interface.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Stem - 90mm/26.0mm - Technomic Deluxe or Tallux

2020-09-19 Thread David B
Need a different stem length for my Redwood.

Looking for:

   - Nitto Technomic Deluxe (190mm quill) or Tallux (225mm quill)
   - 90mm extension (Nitto measures this center-center on the middle line
of the extension, not on the top)
   - 26.0mm clamp

Preference is for the Technomic Deluxe version rather than Tallux as I
don't need the full height that the Tallux affords.
Very good condition to new condition preferred.
Contact offlist if you have one to sell - photo would be great - and a
price shipped to 60131.
If you can't contact offlist in the new format, you can send a message

[RBW] Wavie Bar on Clem - A Review.

2020-09-19 Thread David B
I've had a recent itch to swap out bars on my Clem from the Albatross which
I've been using since I built up my first generation Clem - I preordered a
Clem frameset from the first batch so I've been riding with Albatross bars
since whenever that was.
The Albatross bars were great for city riding, which at the time was what I
was doing, with about a 10 mile round trip commute. I moved so that my
commute became about 12 miles each way, so I commuted by bike (Clem) a
couple times a week then used a regional train in combination with a lockup
train station bike and bikeshare in the city. I got used to that commute
and enjoyed not needing to worry about locking up my Clem on a large
university campus.
Fast forward to now, my Clem became a kid-hauler and Albatross bars worked
fine for that. I've sort of 'reclaimed' my Clem as a recreational bike now,
which means mostly dirt and gravel (and sometimes muddy) trails around
where I'm at. I found I wanted something a bit different than the Albatross.

My original plan was to setup two handlebar setups, drops and an
upright/flat bar, using a rinko-style setup to easily swap bars using
cantilever brakes without needing to undo any cables. A headset mounted
shifter made this a lot easier as I just needed to deal with brake cables.

First, I tried out some drop bars to see what that would be like:
https://www.instagram.com/p/B-koMDRFxak/

I used a 5cm Nitto stem with 50cm Velo Orange rando bars. I liked the
width, and the overall handling was spot on, but I felt I could go wider.
Note that my 1st gen Clem has a 64cm ett, shorter than the following runs.
It was a successful experiment, but I want to go wider.

Then I set up a Wavie bar, using the same 12cm stem I was using with the
Albatross bar.
It took a few rides to get used to, but I think this completely nailed what
I was going for.
I was unsure at first about the 'flatness' of the bar - I had wanted (and
what others have wanted) a wider Albatross bar. However, after riding the
Wavie bar, I think this is exactly what I wanted. I think a wider Albatross
bar wouldn't ride with the same feel as a regular Albatross. In other
words, the Wavie bar fills my desire for a wider Albatross.

The Wavie bar shaped seemed familiar in photos, and now I can see why. It
is essentially a wider Jitensha bar (B2522). The way they made the Jitensha
bar wider is pretty clever, with it seems minimal changes to existing
manufacturing process. First, the clamp sleeve itself is wider, allowing
the 'bends' of the bar to be wider. It's actually the same distance from
the edge of the clamp sleeve to the bend on the Wavie bar and the Jitensha
bar. Since the Wavie clamp sleeve itself is wider, this makes the bends
wider. Otherwise exact shape from end of clamp sleeve to ben. Then the
bends are the same, with the only difference being a longer grip area,
which brings the end of the bars back further than the Jitensha and allows
room for a full grip, brake lever, and shifter. The Jitensha do not have
room for shifters butted up on the brake levers. Since I don't run bar
mounted shifters, this leaves a comfortable secondary grip area, much like
grabbing the curves on an Albatross.

I still plan on trying out a wider drop bar setup and have the option of
easily swapping handlebar setups. I'm leaning towards the Crust Shaka bar
as my next experiment.

So...
The Wavie bar is great. If you've wanted a wider Albatross bar, this might
actually be what you want. If you've wanted a wider Jitensha bar, this is
exactly what you want.

[RBW] FS: Drop Handlebar Setup - 50mm Nitto Stem - VO 50cm Rando Bar - Non-Aero Brake Levers - Tape - $70 plus shipping

2020-09-17 Thread David B

Selling a setup that I had on my Clem - original plan was to test out drop
bars to see how I like them on my first generation Clem. Well I certainly
like them and the experiment was a success, but am itching to try some
different wider drops once the new Riv 31.8mm stems arrive. I'm running a
Wavie bar in the meantime, which is wonderful! Plan to have 2 handlebar
setups, setup rinko style for easy swaps.

So...
Selling this as a complete setup rather than taking apart the nice
condition Newbaum's cloth tape.

Includes:
Nitto Technomic Standard Stem - 50mm extension, 26.0mm clamp, polished
silver, 225mm quill height
Velo Orange Rando Bar - 50cm width (end-end centers) - this version does
NOT fit barend shifters
Dia Compe Non-Aero Brake Levers
Newbaum's Blue Cloth Tape
Mismatched corks for bar plugs (installed, not in photos though)

Does not include cables or housing.

$70 for everything listed plus shipping.
Seen here on my Clem: https://www.instagram.com/p/B-koMDRFxak/

Paypal for payment.

While the box does indeed say Agnel, the saddle sure looks like a
Galibier/Solour. The width I believe matches spec for that narrower saddle
with the photo with a ruler, and there are no saddlebag loops.

[RBW] FS: Parts - 650b tires mostly, Nitto Pearl 12cm/26.0, Soma 700c 38mm tires

2020-09-02 Thread David B
In search of a new tire for my 650b-converted Redwood, I've tried out a LOT
of 650b tires and amassed a somewhat embarrassing collection. I posted to
the 650b group, but figured this might be a good fit too.

I have Ultradynamico Rose tires on the way from Riv (with a Wavie bar I'm
looking forward to trying out) so need to pay off the credit card!

I've set up everything in my webshop. Links below.

Prices listed INCLUDE shipping in the US.
I can also ship outside of the US - contact me for shipping quotes.

Since Google Groups is a bit of a mess with PMs right now, you can go
through this link in my webshop to contact me if you can't reply offlist:
https://treetop.bigcartel.com/contact

There's other items in my webshop, on-topic bike bags and a couple other
parts and off-topic leather goods. Feel free to add those items and I'll
adjust combined shipping if I can fit everything in a padded flat rate
envelope.

Tires Available...

in packaging, black/black - kinda forgot I had these - $65 shipped

2. WTB Horizon Tires

really not noticeable, so nearly like new tread - $70

now-sold Roadini - $55 shipped

Horizons, but want something that geared more towards dirt than pavement.
Local trails around me are a combination of dirt and gravel and my specific
area is not as well maintained than other sections of a longer trail that I
typically ride, so lots of tree roots, some rocks,

I'm curious about the Ultradynamico offerings and would like to test them
out if they're no larger than ~47 actual width.
That's about as wide as I can fit in my Redwood with fenders.

So, anyone running the Ultradynamico tires and care to share actual widths?
My rims are ~25mm outer width (~18/19 internal).

Or, any recommendations for a mixed terrain tire in an actual width range
of 43mm - 47mm?
Thanks,
David

[RBW] FS: Tires - WTB Horizon, Grand Bois Hetre (red, new), Soma, Conti Contact

2020-08-29 Thread David B
In search of a goldilocks tire for my converted Riv Redwood, I've collected
a buncha 650b tires that are available.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE!!! These are all listed in my webshop - please, please,
please go through there to claim and pay. If they're shown as SOLD OUT
there, then that means they've been sold already.

1. Grand Bois Hetre

- pair, new in packaging, red - bought these just in case 47/48mm didn't
work out, but didn't end up needing them - $110 shipped

2. WTB Horizon
 - pair,
tanwalls, minimal use, extremely minimal wear to treads, really not
noticeable, so nearly like new tread - $70

3. Soma Grand Randonneur
 -
42mm green label, pair, lots and lots of use on these, tread is thin, best
for a backup or to test fit in a frame - $25 shipped

4. Continental Contact

- 1.9", ended up being too wide for my frame, wire bead, minimal wear to
tread - $45 shipped

[RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-19 Thread David B
Pondering no more. Keeping both bikes, however this process relieved the
'preciousness' of the Redwood and I think I'm going to to get canti studs
added for 650b. Then I'll really be set... for now.

[RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-08 Thread David B
In looking for Toyo or Waterford Atlantis geometries, I happened upon the
geometry for the first version of the Clem Smith Jr, which I have.
Geometry-wise it's pretty much the same as the Appaloosa with a couple
minor differences.
Pertinents below:
Clem (59cm first version)
HTA/STA - 71.5/71.5
Effective Top Tube - 64cm
Seat Tube - 59cm
Chainstays - 56cm

Appaloosa (60cm - current largest size)
HTA/STA - 72/71/5
Effective Top Tube - 64cm
Seat Tube - 60cm
Chainstays - 53.5cm

This now makes sense as to why my switch to drop bars on the Clem was easy
and it rides comfortably with wide drops. And it has more tire clearance
than the Appaloosa. So, Clem it is in the decision whether an Appaloosa
would be worth the frame swap.
So, I guess now the real question is whether or not I sell my Redwood...

78mm drop on the Redwood. Works fine with 47mm tires. Likely fine with 42mm
and 170mm cranks. I wouldn't go with smaller tires than that though.

The Clem certainly is the most versatile and I'd be more inclined to load
up this one for camping trips vs the Redwood. I have 2.1" Thunderburts
right now which are a pretty sweet spot, but lots of options.

I don't disagree with this in practice - and certainly 47mm is enough for
trails - so I'm leaning towards trying out some semi-knobby 47mm 650b
tires. This might be the first step and see which bike I prefer.

[RBW] Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-06 Thread David B
I've had lofty goals to increase riding while working from home - those
were unrealistic with young kids - and I'm now leaning towards one 'nice'
bike as an all-rounder. I likely won't be doing road-exclusive rides, so
don't really need a 'road' bike, hence the sale of my Roadini.

With a Roadini sale, I'll be left with the following:
Riv Redwood, 650b'd and fendered - https://www.instagram.com/p/B_yrQRyl3T6/
Riv Clem Smith Jr., currently w/ drops -
https://www.instagram.com/p/B-99voyFx5D/

What I'd really like is a bike that can take 2.1" tires and fenders and be
setup comfortably with either drops or albatross bars, and with geometry
angles somewhere between the Clem (71.5 hta/sta) and Redwood (73 hta/sta).

I've been very attached to the Redwood, however I've been shifting to the
'bikes are just bikes' attitude and am open to passing it along if need be.
I say 'nice' as I have a lockup train station bike and a folding bike that
I'll be keeping.

I see potential options as:
1. Sell Redwood, keep Clem and be okay with current setup
2. Sell Clem, keep Redwood and be okay with 47mm tires w/ fenders
3. Sell Redwood, sell Clem, buy an Appaloosa
4. Sell Redwood, sell Clem, buy a Black Mountain Monstercross
5. Ignore this desire and keep both bikes

Note - this is not a feeler for selling either bike - if I sell the Redwood
it'll not be a bargain sale.

Thoughts, suggestions, other options? Other options would need to fit
~94pbh.
Thanks,
David

Hi Alan,
I used a 6-speed Suntour freewheel and removed the outer 2 cogs. The
remaining were threaded onto the upper portion of the freewheel body and
stayed in place by design. So, as simple as removing the outer two cogs -
just follow any instructions on Suntour freewheel disassembly.

[RBW] FS: 61cm Roadini - Orange - Complete - $1000

2020-07-30 Thread David B
After mulling bike decisions, and working from home for several months now
(and at least until December too for sure), I've had time to play around
with my bike lineup and have decided to pass on my Roadini. It's a
wonderful bike for sure, but my Clem and 650b'd Redwood are a better fit
for the dirt (often muddy) trails around me. And for taller folks, it's
comparable in fit (nearly identical) to my 65cm Redwood - with the 61cm
Roadini actually having higher stack. And it's super comfy - if I could've
fit 47mm 650b tires and fenders in it, I would be keeping the Roadini
instead of my Redwood.

Offering this as a complete first. If there's no interest, I may consider
selling it as a frameset and parting it out. Shifting bits are eclectic,
though I think I have more modern parts that I could swap in.
Build includes:

Riv Roadini Frame/Fork - orange in very nice used condition
Sun/Shimano Wheelset - handbuilt recently, Shimano RS400 hubs, Sun CR18
polished silver rims, 36 Sapim 14ga spokes
Panaracer Gravelking Tires - 700x38 - new as of last week
Sunrace 8-speed cassette
Suntour ARX Rear Derailleur - medium/long cage
Suntour Accushift Downtube Shifter - set to friction, won't match in
indexed mode - have matching ratcheting left shifter I can include
Stock Seatpost
Nitto Technomic Stem - 10cm, 26.0mm
Velo Orange Grand Cru Drop Bars - 46cm, maes parallel clone
Shimano Brake Levers
Shimano Medium Reach Brakes - added matching cartridge pad holders/salmon
brake pads
Shimano Dura Ace 7410 Crankset - 172.5mm - 43t chainring w/ de-toothed
chainring bashguard - happy to swap this to a double chainring setup
VP Pedals
Fizik Saddle

Photos here when I had it set up with different wheels and less gears:
https://www.instagram.com/p/B_u6qH3Fynr/

$1000 plus shipping - bell not included, pedals/saddle are.
This isn't a financially-motivated sale, so I'm likely not too open to
offers, but feel free to send if you think my price is off.
Local sale would be preferred - can travel a reasonable distance from the
Chicago area to meet.

[RBW] Biggest Tires on a Roadini?

2020-06-17 Thread David B
38mm Panaracer Gravelkings (on 22mm external width rims) fit comfortably with
Shimano brakes. Definitely acceptable clearances.

Your 650B convered Redwood (was: Re: [RBW] Roadini - 650b on bigger sizes?)

2020-06-12 Thread David B
Jim,
The Roadini would likely clear 42mm 650b tires are the max - fenders would
probably fit but would need some mods at the fork crown. Guessing Tektro brakes
would work.
The Redwood has more clearance for fenders and tires - 47mm 650b tires fit. I
have 58m VO fenders - though those only fit with MAFAC Raid brakes.
And yes, mine is a 65cm - fit is close to identical to the 61cm Roadini - the
stack on the Roadini is taller.

[RBW] Roadini - 650b on bigger sizes?

2020-06-11 Thread David B
Adam,
For curiosity’s sake, I put 650b wheels in my 61cm Roadini to see what fit
would be with WTB Horizons (47mm). They technically fit, however the tightest
point is fork width - only ~1mm on either side of the tire. Rear would be fine.
My regular setup is 700c with 38mm tires with Shimano brakes (47-57mm) brake
pads near the bottom, guessing around 54mm reach.
So with reach at 54mm for 700c, reach for 650b would be 73mm. So, do-able for
sure, but at the end range for commonly available long reach brakes.
I’d be comfortable with 42mm 650b tires, with narrower than ideal fenders.
For me 38mm 700c and 42mm 650b wouldn’t justify the switch unless I intended to
add fenders.
It’s a little bit of a shame as the Ram/Rom/Redwood had wider fork crowns.
Here’s my Redwood with 47mm 650b:

[RBW] Kid/Haulin’ Trailer Recommendations for Clem.

2020-05-31 Thread David B
My older kid is getting too big for a Yepp rear seat based on weight limit from
Yepp - rack itself is rated a lot higher.

So, looking into options - a trail a bike might work, but leaning toward a
trailer that could do duty as a grocery hauler.

Any trailer recommendations that:
- are designed for children
- can fit 2 children OR work with an existing rack/rear child seat
- can handle some dirt/gravel trails

Not sure about mounting options for a Clem H, but it’ll go on there.
Thanks,
David

If you have enough space, you can fit the mount as a headset spacer without the

[RBW] FS: Garage Cleanout - Round Three - Tires, Bags, Small Parts, .

2020-05-09 Thread David B
Thanks to everyone who's bought something and helped me clean up my garage
of lots of bike parts. Some items were in the previous list, adding here
with some price reductions on those still around.
This is round three of the garage cleanout where I'm clearing out pretty
much everything that's not installed on a bike, and digging into the parts
bin for small parts I won't be using.
I've set up these parts for sale in my webshop.
There's photos and brief descriptions in the webshop listings.
Shipping is not included, but is calculated based on size/shape and my best
guess. If I can ship it for less, I'll refund the difference, but in most
cases I'm covering part of shipping. Shipping for individual items $4-$8,
then combined for multiple items - I'll refund the difference if it's more.

Please go through the webshop to purchase - checkout process uses Paypal
for shipping - and I can easily track purchases and print shipping labels.
Contact offlist if you have a particular question about an item.

Link to everything is: https://treetop.bigcartel.com/category/bike-parts
Off topic discounted leather goods also available if you're interested and
want to combine shipping, links here:

[RBW] WTT/B: 700c 38mm Tires - Soma Terracota Tread for Black Tires

2020-05-04 Thread David B
Building up a new to me Roadini and am surprised by the tire clearances. I
thought I'd run Resist Nomad tires, which I have, that measure out to
~34mm, but there's a bunch of clearance to fit 38mm tires.
I've been saving some Soma Supple Vitesse EX tires with terracota (brick
red-ish) tread but the colors aesthetically don't go well (to me) with an
orange frame.

So... wondering if any one is interested in a trade.

I have:
Soma Supple Vitesse EX Tires - 700x38 - terracota tread, tan sidewalls - new

I would like:
similar tires in 700x38 with black tread and black or tan sidewalls like -
Soma Supple Vitesse
Panaracer Gravelking Slicks
Rene Herse Barlow Pass
Lightly used condition is fine - tires don't need to be new

Trade would be preferable, but if you have any of these tires for sale, I'd
be interested in buying outright too.

Happy to throw in some additional funds/parts for trade if the Rene Herse
tires are a possible trade

[RBW] FS: Specialized Sequoia Frameset (Tall!) 66cm (c-c) - $150 plus shipping

2020-05-01 Thread David B
I very recently replaced this frameset with a Riv Roadini, so offering the
Sequoia frameset up to another tall person.
Purchased this somewhat recently to see if I 'need' a more traditional road
bike in addition to my 650b'd Riv Redwood.
And I decided I do need a more road-ish oriented bike, and jumped all in on
the Roadini.
The Sequoia fit is near identical to my Riv Redwood when it was set up in
700c configuration.

So, selling this as a frameset - though I'm open to selling other parts in
the build, I'm guessing most will want to build it up differently.

Specialized Sequoia Frameset (early 80s)
66cm seattube - measured center-center
~60cm top tube
Includes frame, fork, newer headset, seatpost, downtube cable guide clamp.

It's seen use and has paint flaking from chromed areas (fork crown) and has
some light surface rust.
Perfectly ride-able as is and indeed rides wonderfully, though if you're
looking for pristine cosmetic vintage condition, this is not it.

Photos here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B_p2DHfl0cm/
And here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B_p2E5KFuWL/

$150 plus shipping - have a box ready to go. Social distance local pickup
near River Grove, IL is an option.
Contact off list if interested, or any questions/constructive comments.
If you inquire saying you want this and decide to not purchase - no biggie,
but kindly let me know.

[RBW] Re: Replace headset on Clem? Cabin fever?

2020-04-22 Thread David B
Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this. I still am not sure what I'll do.
Functionally, nothing wrong with the headset. To my eye the headsets that
come stock on other Riv frames just seem a little slicker, dare I say
'higher' end. I understand the philosophy of the Clem and the decision for
the sorta of (but not really) rinko headset.

[RBW] Re: Replace headset on Clem? Cabin fever?

2020-04-22 Thread David B
I'm thinking if I do this, I'll just buy tools and forego the diy. Lots of
covid cases in my area and still lots of folks going into 'essential'
stores, so the idea of rooting around a hardware store doesn't sound
appealing to me right now.

Christopher - I did intentionally place the shifter mount in that manner
since the previous Sunrace thumb shifter mounted on the stem could only
mount in that orientation. However, with Riv's new design, I didn't realize
I could fit that on the same side, but with mount behind the quill AND
still have the shifter oriented in the same manner. I might switch this up.
I don't want to mount to stem because I'll have 2 handlebar setups (using a
rinko trick) that I can easily swap. Having the shifter mounted as a
headset spacer means I don't have to mess with it at all to swap setups.

Good advice! Certainly a little crazy, but possibly a good excuse to
finally learn how to remove/install headsets.
Joe, I might take you up on your offer if I don't decide to invest in tools
right now - and thanks for the offer!

[RBW] Replace headset on Clem? Cabin fever?

2020-04-21 Thread David B
Maybe I'm just getting into bike projects that aren't necessary whatsoever,
but I'm interested in swapping up a couple things on my bikes.
I've never replaced a headset before, but I'm contemplating upgrading the
rinko-style cups that my Clem and wife's Clementine came with for something
swankier.

Questions:
Is this crazy? The current headsets function fine, purely cosmetic.
Is this worth it to me to buy the proper tools? I likely won't have a need
to change headset aside from these two bikes. Some sort of diy tools?
Or should I just let my LBS take care of this?

The main reason I'm thinking about this is I added a Silver2 shifter/mount
as a headset spacer (works great) and the wider headset cup looks out of
place now that everything's a bit cluttered.

[RBW] Re: FS: 60cm Yves Gomez Complete Bike - $1200 plus shipping

2020-04-20 Thread David B
Doing one final bump and lower for now.

$700 for frame/fork/headset.
$1100 complete.
Either option plus packing/shipping.

If you're interested in an option in between frameset and full complete,
let's talk. Or if you're interested in parts from the build, let's talk as
well.

If it doesn't move in a couple weeks I'm going to strip it down to a
frameset, then might rebuild with some 700x42mm semi-knobbies and hit the
dirt trails on it.
Or hit eBay with it, dunno. On a big garage cleaning goal, and clearing up
and minimizing bikes seems to be one of the goals.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ideas for very unobtrusive and very QR saddlebag mounting system for non-Brooks saddles

2020-04-14 Thread David B
And now you've got me thinking!
Another idea - use the dowel idea but mount the dowel piece directly and
tightly to bag. To mount, have the bag twisted sideways, fit dowel parallel
(and between saddle rails) then twist to fit the dowel on the inside of the
rail area (with bag fitting outside the rail area). Then with a strap
tightly around the seatpost the bag wouldn't be able to twist sideways to
release.

I wonder if a double-ended snap hook would do the trick. I've seen setups
where that piece was mounted onto the saddle, but I wager you could mount
it onto the bag and then attach to the saddle rails.
I suppose you could figure out to use 2 of these
(https://www.rivbike.com/products/no-discontinued-nitto-saddlebag-grip-r50-hardware-r50-nut-bolt-ea-20027?_pos=24&_sid=7dade3af7&_ss=r)

and use a wing nut on the inside of the bag to secure/loosen - problem with
those is those washers with concave grips would be loose, so you'd to
figure out a way to store those while the bag is off the bike.

2020-04-14 Thread David B
To be clear in my previous post, I was suggesting 2 separate options.

[RBW] Re: Chocomoose Versions

2020-04-04 Thread David B
I do think there was an early version with a different rise/reach than what
went out with the completes. No idea what the actual rise/reach
differences. I bought one from the 'garage sale' section at some point to
try out and I think it was the higher rise version.
