[RBW] WTT : My Choco bar for your Wavie bar

2022-05-06 Thread Eric Karnes
Hi all-

Last fall I installed a Choco on my AHH. And while it's a solid bar, I
prefer more of a 40–45 degree sweep to the Choco/Albatross sweep. Anyone
with a Wavie bar feel the opposite? PM me if interested...

(1) Single or set of XT hubs. Would prefer 32h, 8sp (m737) or newer so that
I can use them with some existing rims and 10sp drivetrain parts.

(2) A vintage Ritchey Logic MTB crankset (with or w/o chainrings). Open on

[RBW] Re: My First Riv - c.2016 Sam H - Help needed for Newbie

2020-11-10 Thread Eric Karnes

Lots of good advice here.

My own experience is that a nice, light but sturdy set of wheels and
good-quality tires are the best investment you can make in a bike (outside
the Riv frame). Other than dialing in the cockpit, that’s where I spend
most of my overall bike budget these days. As mentioned, choice of wheels
depends on your weight and intended use. I’m 170ish and much prefer lighter
wheels and suppler tires–even when I’m carrying a small load in front or
back. That said, I don’t do any loaded touring. My current preference for
rims in the H Plus Son Archetype 32H. Wide enough for most tires that Sam
can handle, the tires and tubes come off and on easily for on-trail
repairs, and they are relatively light. Matched with a decent hub, it makes
for a really nicely riding wheel. Like Nathan, Atlas and 36+H is way
overbuilt for me, but it all depends on your weight and riding style.

As for drivetrain, I’m a huge fan of the Sugino XD crank that Riv used to
sell. You can probably find a used one on this group or pick up one of the
‘Clipper’ versions mentioned–which are a similar design. Having tried all
manner of fancy groupsets, I still find Shimano Deore to be the best
overall deal for mixed riding. It works perfectly with lots of different
shifters, is relatively light in weight, can handle wider-range cassettes,
and is pretty much indestructible. Again, you can usually find these used
or on closeout prices if you want to save a few dollars.

Cockpits (handlebars, stems, saddles) are very much dependent on personal
preference, riding style, and rider anatomy. Ask ten riders and you’ll get
ten wildly different answers. I’ve found the writings of James from Analog
cycles very helpful (you can find them on the Analog cycles website). And
as with Riv, I always try to buy things from them in order to support the
work they are doing.

Enjoy the build!

Eric

[RBW] WTB: Carradice Barley and Bagman

2020-10-22 Thread Eric Karnes

Hi all-

I’m sick of carrying things in a backpack and have become increasingly
intrigued by the Carradice-esque Swift Zeitgeist and Bags by Bird Goldback.
But they appear to be sold out everywhere. Eric’s FS post a few days back
inspired me to give the original inspiration a try on my Hilsen. At least
until the aforementioned makers begin production again.

So if anyone has a Carradice Barley (or Super C Audax) and a Bagman support
that are just gathering dust, let me know…

Thanks,

Eric

Thanks for all the comments! I think I will just leave it as is. I have a good
lock collection from my time in Philly that will be shipped over with the bike.
Though I might place a sticker here or there to make it look a bit less
precious! I'll also use the ball-bearing trick. Looking forward to exploring
all the canal paths.

Roberta, hope the basket is getting some use! Reid, what happened to the
Hanford? The binder bolt seized?

[RBW] Make my AHH look less tempting!

2019-09-27 Thread Eric Karnes
Evening all-

I'm interested in some group brainstorming. I recently moved to a university
area where I'm told there is a high incidence of bike theft. (Granted this is a
town in the UK and I just move here from Philadelphia, so perhaps I should take
that claim with a grain of salt). Nevertheless, my AHH will shortly arrive here
via Bikeflights.

I'm a firm believer in riding my 'good bikes' anywhere and everywhere, but I
don't want to tempt fate. So I'm looking for ideas: how could I make my Hilsen
look less desirable to opporunistic British bike thrives? It's brown and has
albatross bars so it already looks a bit like an old British beater to the
uninformed. But all brainstorming welcome! I was thinking lots of stickers and
a bit of thoughtfully-smeared dirt.

Thanks in advance!

Eric

[RBW] WTB: Rear Wheel, 700c rim / 135mm hub

2019-07-21 Thread Eric Karnes

Hi all-

As mentioned in the subject, I'm in need of a new rear wheel. Normally I’d
order a replacement from Riv or my LBS, but I’m on a pretty strict budget
in preparation for a move, so I figure I’d reach out here. Specs:

I need 700c and 135mm rear spacing. Rim brakes (obviously). And svelte
‘young’ man that I am, I’d like to go with 32h, but beggars can’t be
choosy…so I’m open. Also open to buying a full wheelset if the price is
right.

Anyone who’s looking to rid themselves of anything that matches the above
(especially in and around Philly), let me know!

Final bump before I put it up on the ebay.

Complete bike: $1300, OR
Frame, fork, headset, bb (square taper), wheels, brake calipers and rotors,
and axles: $800

Again, if you go the f/f/etc. route I can include various other parts
priced a la carte.

[RBW] WTB: Shimano 105/Ultegra drivetrain parts

2019-07-17 Thread Eric Karnes

Hi all-

I have a new-to-cycling friend who I’m helping with a Riv-ish budget road
build. Does anyone have any Shimano road drivetrain parts that are just
gathering dust and could use a new home? Ultegra, 105 or even 600
components. Specifically, I’m looking for…

- Front Derailleur

- Rear Derailleur

- Cassette

- Downtube Shifters (matching the speeds on the RD/cassette)

9 speed would be ideal, but 7 or 8 would be just as lovely if you have a
matching cassette and DT shifters in good shape.

PM me with a price if you have anything that might fit the bill. Thanks!

Eric

[RBW] Bump! FS: Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross

2019-07-14 Thread Eric Karnes
Bump!

I've had some interest, but no final takers on the BMC Monstercross Disc.
So, I'm opening things up:

Complete bike (as listed below): $1400, OR
Frame, fork, headset, bb (square taper), wheels, brake calipers and rotors,
and axles: $900

The frame, wheels and associated parts listed above were $1500 new from
BMC. So if you've ever been curious about a steel disc-braked bike, this
would be an economical way to try out a great one. All the disc-y bits are
taken care of...just add the rest from your spare parts bin. I can also
include other parts priced al la carte if you need them.

PM me with any questions...

[RBW] Re: René Herse Steilacoom for... commuting?

2019-07-12 Thread Eric Karnes
I rode Steilacooms on my Hanford custom commuter for about a six months on
the paved (and I use that term loosely) streets of Philadelphia and found
them more durable than the Squ-something-ie Passes they replaced. Perhaps
it was the knobs, but I never flatted during the time they were on there.
Granted they were the standard, not the extra lights...

[RBW] FS: Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross

2019-07-08 Thread Eric Karnes

Hi all-

This is the final bike to sell before my move to England. This is
cross-listed with the iBob. I know it’s not a traditional Riv, but many on
this list are hearty supporters of Mike and Black Mountain Cycles. The
bikes are steel, the ride is excellent, the geometry allows the handlebars
to get up fairly high (even with a treadless setup), the drivetrain is
pretty Riv-ish, and other than my Rivs, this BMC is the only bike I’ve
owned that didn’t feel twitchy with drop bars. As such, I hope nobody has
any objection to me listing it here…

I would like to sell the entire bike for obvious reasons. But if there are
no initial takers, I would be open to selling only the frame, wheels, and
brakes (and parting out the rest). The bike is about six months old. I put
in my deposit a month before I found out I would be moving overseas. I
received it in January and have been riding it off and on since the
beginning of the spring. Like all BMCs, it rides great, but a serious
multi-surface bike like this won’t be as useful for the kind of riding I’ll
be doing across the pond. For reference, my PBH is 90cm. I ride a 62cm
SimpleOne and a 63cm Hilsen. It fits me very much like the 62cm SimpleOne,
but due to the sloping top tube would be great for someone slightly shorter
as well. The saddle height in the photos is 79.125 inches and the
handlebars are about an inch-ish above saddle height (with room to go
higher if desired). Condition is like new, not a scratch on it that I can
see. The full geometry and technical details can be found here:

https://blackmtncycles.com/tech-info/mcd-frame-tech/

New BMC Monstercross Disc frames go for 700 and Mike’s standard builds go
for 2700. I’m asking the following:

$1450: Complete with the following build (Note: pedals, saddle, bags, and
bottles/cages not included):

Frame: 56cm Black Mountain Cycles MCD

Headset: Cane Creek 40

Wheelset: Shimano 105 Hubs to WTB KOM Tubeless compatible (hand-built by
Mike at BMC)

Tires: Compass Steilacoom 38mm (Very Light Use)

Cassette: XT 9sp

Rear Derailleur: Deore 9sp

Chain: SRAM 10sp

Bottom Bracket: Shimano UN-55

Crankset: Sugino XD Low Double with Chainguard

Chainring: Wolftooth 40t

Front Derailleur: None

Brakes: Shimano R317 Mechanical Disc Calipers with Shimano 160mm Rotors

Brake Levers: Shimano Tiagra

Shifters: Shimano 9sp Dura Ace Barends

Stem: Dimension 60mm w/ Spacers

Handlebar: Salsa Cowbell 2 44cm

Tape: Black Newbaums

Seatpost: Kalloy Silver

All of the above parts were purchased new with the frame with the exception
of the crankset and seatpost. The current setup is obviously 1x, but I can
provide two options depending on your preference:

(1) Shimano bar-ends (both L and R included), Wolf-tooth ring w/ Sugino
chainguard, and no front derailleur, or…

(2) Shimano bar-ends (both L and R included), Standard Sugino wide-low
rings (40 and 26t) and chainguard, and Deore front derailleur (uninstalled)

Photos here:

Bike will be well-packed and shipped and insured via BikeFlights at buyer’s
expense. (FYI: It’s not yet packed, so I’ll need a week together a box and
get it done properly). Any questions, feel free to PM me. Thanks for
looking!

[RBW] Re: FS: Nitto Fairweather Drop Bar and 60mm Technomic Stem

2019-07-02 Thread Eric Karnes
It's basically a similar shape as the noodle, but with less reach and shallower
drops. A bit better for those who like the shape of the noodle but find the
reach too long. The disadvantage is that it's not readily available in the US.
So you have to order it from Blue Lug in Japan.

Ben's Cycle sells (what I assume is) the chain guard that was on the XD2
wide low that Riv used to sell:

https://www.benscycle.com/sugino-chainring-chainguard-110bcd-44t-silver/chainring_guard_sugino__434-435_434-435/product

Probably worth shooting them an email for a photo before shelling out $50
bucks. Though if the Silver works on only Sugino cranks, I'd rather give my
money to Rivendell.

[RBW] Re: Economical Clem

2019-06-24 Thread Eric Karnes
I encourage everyone to get a Riv for a commuter bike...and not to worry
about a few scratches.

I bought my SimpleOne as a commuter for center city Philadelphia. Having
gone through a number of cheap bikes that "I wouldn't be afraid to lock
up," I found that I hated riding them. They were uncomfortable and twitchy.
Finally I just buckled down and splurged on a used SimpleOne from the list.
Three years and countless bike rack scratches later, I always look forward
to riding it. And as an added bonus, I think it looks even better with a
bit of character. There's just something about banged up lugged steel bikes
with knobby tires that do it for me.

At the end of the day, Rivs ARE expensive bikes. But having decided to
ditch my car a few years ago, I did some math. I'm on a budget (like most
people) and certainly don't have much disposable income to waste. But I
calculated that it would be cheaper to buy a new custom Rivendell EVERY
YEAR than simply insuring and garaging a car where I live (not even
including the cost of the car itself, gas, service, etc). The decision
seemed a simple one (pun intended).

They are wonderful bikes. But at the end of the day, they are just bikes.
And if mine ever gets stolen or wrecked, I can easily have the folks a Riv
build me a lovely new one.

Eric

[RBW] Re: Economical Clem

2019-06-21 Thread Eric Karnes
Not that another 'I agree' is needed, but...I agree.

If your friend is willing to keep it fairly stock and is under 5'10" (those
80s and 90s Specialized mountain bikes were not designed for taller
riders), an old Rockhopper might do the job nicely. They were really
wonderful bikes. But as Bill pointed out, replacing parts to turn it into a
Clem adds up real quick. And then you don't have a Clem. You have a
Rockhopper. Who's resale value (with all the fancy new parts) probably
still isn't too much more than what you paid for the stock bike.

Re: [RBW] First Rivendell — sizing question

2019-06-05 Thread Eric Karnes
Regarding weight, I agree with Jeffrey. I'm not familiar with the San
Marcos, but I've had a 61cm MUSA Homer. Built up with reasonably light
components (dura-ace / open pro wheels, old ultegra drivetrain, compass
tires) it was around 24ish pounds without bags and water bottles. I
personally found it nice and light for my tastes and honestly I don't think
you'd notice a sizable difference vs the San Marcos (or the Hilsen) carting
it on and off the train. I carried mine up and down two flights of stairs
everyday with no problem. So get the frame you like best.

Regarding sizing, I will say that I too was in between sizes (a 62cm is my
sweet spot) on the AHH and I regret going with the smaller 61cm. I've since
sold it, and if I wasn't moving overseas, I would snatch up that 63cm that
Bill has for sale. Although if it stays up for sale, I might buy it anyway
and ship it over. Someone remove that temptation please!

[RBW] WTB: Bolt-on Rear Derailleur

2019-05-28 Thread Eric Karnes
Evening-

In preparation for my impending move to the land of Brexit, my beloved
SimpleOne is on (very) long-term loan to a trusted friend. I was chatting
with him yesterday about the bike and mentioned the article on the two
shiftable gears mod in Riv Reader number 36. Needless to say he is
interested in trying it.

So I told him I would ask around for a bolt-on rear derailleur. Anyone have
one they are looking to get rid of? If so, just PM me.

Thanks!

I'm shocked that this is still available! My SimpleOne is hands down the

[RBW] FS: Edelux II headlight and Wolf Tooth chainring

2019-03-15 Thread Eric Karnes
Hi all-

So, these are (I think) the last two parts left before my transatlantic
move…

Wolf Tooth 40T Dropstop Ring : For a 1x setup. 130bcd, Black, decent
condition. $25 shipped conus.

SON Edelux II headlight : This is was purchased new from Compass new about
a year ago and wired to a custom fork built for the SL connector-less
system. The wire has been cut pretty short by the shop that set up the
bike. I'm not sure what you would need to do to attach it to a different
fork, but make me an offer! I need to get it out of the apartment.

[RBW] Re: FS: Hanford Custom (in the Riv / Compass tradition)

2019-02-13 Thread Eric Karnes
Glad everything arrived in order! It's a wonderful bike and I hope you
enjoy it.

I also HIGHLY recommend Simon. Amazing craftsman and really great guy. If
any of you are in the Philadelphia metro area, he also does repairs and
alterations to existing frames.

[RBW] Re: FS: Various Parts

2019-02-07 Thread Eric Karnes
Still left:

- Shimano 5800 105 rear hub. Silver. 32 hole. Includes quick release
skewer. Mint condition: $30
- SON Edelux II (non-hanging) headlight. Silver. Perfect condition. The
wire is only a few inches long. I can be attached to internal wiring,
rewired, or just connected to a longer wire to feed down the dropouts: $110

Any reasonable offers will be considered. I have to get rid of it...

I've had a number of questions about the wiring on the SON Edelux light. To
be honest, I have no idea about wiring. It was all done for me by a local
shop. I assume to attach it to a Riv or any bike without internal fork
wiring, you would just need to attach it to a longer length of wire that
runs down the fork. But I can't promise this is the case. I'll post a photo
later tonight for those of you that might know more.

2019-02-07 Thread Eric Karnes
Paul Minimotos and downtube shifters are sold. Here's what's left:

- Shimano 5800 105 rear hub. Silver. 32 hole. Includes quick release
skewer. Mint condition: $30
- SON Edelux II (non-hanging) headlight. Silver. Perfect condition. The
wire is only a few inches long. I can be attached to internal wiring,
rewired, or just connected to a longer wire to feed down the dropouts: $110
- SONdelux SL Generator Hub. Silver. 32h. This is the ‘connector-less’
kind, so you would need the special dropouts built into a custom fork. So
if you have a custom you are thinking of getting built (or a new fork for
your Riv), this is for you. $175

Feel free to make me an offer if you want to haggle.

[RBW] FS: Hanford Custom (in the Riv / Compass tradition)

2019-02-06 Thread Eric Karnes

Hi guys-

So I don’t know if there is any interest in this bike. But if so, I figured
this (and iBob) would be the forum for it.

Up for sale is my Hanford all-rounder. Hanfords are custom bikes built by
Simon Firth here in Philadelphia. Simon used to be the main frame builder
at Bilenky until setting out on his own and starting Firth and Wilson
Transport Cycles and building his own bikes under the Hanford badge.

Simon built me this bike a year ago to serve as an all-rounder in the
Rivendell / Compass-ish tradition. It has higher handlebars and longish
chainstays like a Rivendell with low trail and lighter (though still
oversized) tubing. It was primarily built with commuting in mind, though
I’ve also used it for a lot of gravel riding in and around the city. The
low bottom bracket makes it really stable and easily dismountable at stop
lights. And the low-trail fork is even wired for a SON SL ‘connector-less’
hub (which I can also sell to a buyer). Its geometry was designed around
40mm tires, though it was shod with Snoqualmie Passes (44mm) for its entire
life. Here are the specs:

Seat tube (c-c): 620mm

Seat tube angle: 72 degrees

Effective top tube: 590mm

Top tube angle: 1.5 degrees

Head tube angle: 72.5 degrees

Chainstay length: 455mm

Bottom bracket drop: 88mm

Standover (with 40mm tires): 881mm

(For Riv reference, I also ride a 62cm SimpleOne, which is what this sizing
was based one. So if that bike fits you, this one should too)

It’s a fantastic bike, especially with a front rack (it used to have a
Nitto Mark’s Rack on it). It has lovely fillet brazes, rides super smooth,
and is absolutely perfect for commuting or Riv-ish rides. It was built up
with very Rivish-parts : Deore deraillers, friction shifters, Sugino triple
crank, etc. So it should fit your bin parts perfectly. The only real issues
I can find are: (1) that the water bottle mounts were set a bit too far
down the down tube, so when using two water bottle cages, I need to use one
of those Problem-solvers adapter thingys; and (2) the paint was still a
little tacky when the front derailleur was installed and there are
indentations in the paint. The frame still includes installed bottom
bracket and VO threadless headset. I also have a 70mm stem I can throw in.
Here are some images:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/35128198@N02/albums/72157678451374428

Why am I selling it, you may ask? Well, I’m moving to the UK in the summer
and can only take what I can carry on the plane. So this, along with my
other bikes (and possessions) need to go. I’ve stripped it and given a
bunch of the parts to friends for their various builds. Though I still have
some of the other parts for sale.

I paid $2500 for the frame about a year and a half ago, though as it’s a
custom I don’t expect to get anywhere near that. But it’s in excellent
condition and a great bike. I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t ride it nearly as
much as I was expecting, so there’s very little wear and tear. So, down to
brass tacks. How does $500 plus shipping through BikeFlights sound? Let me
know via private message if you’re interested.

This morning (while half asleep), I left the washer in my drive side crank
arm while removing it from the bottom bracket spindle. Ugh. Needless to
say, I completely cross threaded the thing.

So, does anyone have a set of XD2 170 crank arms they'd be willing to part

need the arms themselves. I'll pay cold, hard PayPal cash or could trade if

I really love beusage (is that how grant spells it?) on steel bikes. and i
don't want to have to match colors, which never quite works. so i use clear

[RBW] Re: What tires fit good on 700c Sun CR18 rims?

2018-08-21 Thread Eric Karnes
I've had nothing but nightmarish experiences with these rims. Maybe I got
part of a bad batch (I've read there were some that were oversized).

I tried a number of different tires, from supple compasses to stout
schwalbes to good 'ol pasellas. At best it took 20 minutes of muscling and
a few pinch flats to get them on. At worst, they simply wouldn't fit…even
with tubeless tape. No problems mounting any of these tires on Dyads or
OpenPros. And only a little finagling to get them on another tubeless-ready
rim I had laying around (can't remember now what it was).

If you already have them, large wire-bead tires were 'easiest' to get on
for me. But if you're thinking of purchasing the rims, I'd go with Dyads or
OpenPros instead (depending on what width tire you are planning to run).
Just my two cents...

[RBW] Re: Why not a suspension-corrected fork/frame?

2018-06-15 Thread Eric Karnes
I would definitely appreciate front suspension during the (extremely rare)
occasions that I'm riding seriously off-road. But I'm guessing a 500 or
600mm fork completely changes the ride characteristics of the bike. I'm no
geometry expert, but have definitely found suspension corrected Surlys to
ride awkwardly on anything but the single track they were designed for.
Kind of a lumbering feel. Certainly compared to a Rivendell. And as was
mentioned, there are plenty of steel, suspension-corrected mountain bike
frames out there today.

[RBW] Re: Is this an insane idea?

2018-06-09 Thread Eric Karnes
Thanks Patrick! I really like the idea of riding a single speed everywhere.
I've always been a bit of a minimalist, so the idea definitely fits into my
lifestyle (one of these days I'll ask to pick your brain about floor
living). But in practice it's intimidating once I get out of the (flat)
center of the city to hilly gravel fire trails. Perhaps it would be worth
investing in a DOS freewheel and seeing if I can do it...

[RBW] Re: Low/No Carb Electrolyte?

2018-06-09 Thread Eric Karnes
I know that in Grant's book, he recommends tomato juice (at least I think
that's where I read it). It has the salt and you can get brands (Knudsen
and Trader Joe's) that don't add sugar and have relatively low carb content
(around 8–10g per 8oz). I've done one bottle of this and one bottle of
water on occasion...seems to work well.

This is also intriguing. I have a wide low on there already, am a lazy

Anyone know the RR number so I can see the detail of James's build?

[RBW] Re: U locks and Pitlocks

2018-06-06 Thread Eric Karnes
I agree with what's been said so far. Small, strong U-Lock like the
Kryptonite NY. I've used cables for wheels and saddle in the past, but
picked up a set of pitlocks for my SimpleOne about a year and a half ago.
In that time, locking my bike all day, every day in Philadelphia, I've
never had a problem (knock on wood). My bike has some beausage and it's
securely locked. Most thieves will dismiss it for the flashier (but
crappier) bikes held with only a cable lock. If there's a knowledgable
thief looking for a Rivendell or equivalent price-point bike, there's not
much you can do. But this is extremely rare. Most bike thieves are
opportunistic.

I actually purchased a used Hilsen with the same tt length and set it up
just like my SimpleOne. Same rims, spokes, saddle, handlebars, etc.

It just wasn't the same. Could be the geometry differences. BB drop, HT
angle, CS length. Or different tubing. I'm not expert enough to be able to
know.

[RBW] Is this an insane idea?

2018-06-06 Thread Eric Karnes
So, I've been pondering something lately...

As I've mentioned a number of times in various discussions here, I'm
completely enamored with my SimpleOne. It's the best bike I've ever ridden.
But I lack the legs of Deacon and require gears for some of longer
mixed-terrain rides I do (although I'm seriously interested in learning
more about his floor living ideas...but I digress). Recently, I've been
toying with the idea of tracking down another SO or Quickbeam and having a
frame builder convert the track ends to run-of-the-mill dropouts and spread
the rear end to accommodate the 130mm cassette wheels I already own.

Is this idea insane? Blasphemous? Would it be possible (or advisable) to
spread the rear that far? Would it make more sense to just have a custom
built? I can't really afford $3500 for a Riv custom and don't know the
tubing specs (which I imagine are as important as geometry). And even if
Riv were willing to divulge those details, it would be unethical to get
that info and then have someone execute Grant's exact design for cheaper.

Any thoughts to help me work through this first-world conundrum?

Eric

[RBW] Re: What frame and build set make you a safer, slower rider?

2018-06-03 Thread Eric Karnes
Handlebar choice is also going to depend on the type of city street you
ride on. Center city Philly (where I ride) has tight gridded streets, lots
of traffic, and limited bike lanes. I found a MAP bar to be much too wide,
an Albatross to be a bit too wide, and a Velo Orange Porteur to be just
perfect. All three give you a nice upright riding position for good
visibility and easy reach to the brakes, but the 48mm width of the Porteur
allows you to maneuver at low speeds through cars without knocking off side
mirrors and such.

My current commuter is a SimpleOne, but if I were going geared, I would
probably lean towards a Sam. Shod it with 40mm-ish tires, get the stem up,
and put a porteur (or your choice of upright bar) on there.

[RBW] Re: Seems I stumbled across the most(?) Rivendell-like alternative out there

2018-05-27 Thread Eric Karnes
Seems pretty in line with the prices of Linus, Pure, Public, etc. Or even
entry-level Specialized and Trek. Although I'll grant you those frames are
4130 CrMo. Do they ride as nice as a Riv? Of course not. But I've ridden a
few of the above brands, and they're not bad. As to how they do it: I'm
speculating, but my guess is bulk manufacture in China combined with bulk
purchase of entry-level parts.

[RBW] WTT: Snoqualmie Pass for Barlow Pass or Steilacoom

2018-05-26 Thread Eric Karnes
Hi all-

I have a pair of Snoqualmie Pass tires and they're just a bit too wide for
me. I'm odd and prefer a 38mm tire. So...

Anyone interested in trading a set of nearly new (two or three short rides)
standard casing Snoqualmie Pass tires for nearly new Barlow or Steilacooms
(ok with either standard or extra light)?

If it doesn't come to anything, I'll just put the Snoqualmies up for sale
and buy a new pair.

Let me know, Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rim recommendations?

2018-05-25 Thread Eric Karnes
Yep, I've always used the Stan's rim strips on tubeless compatible rims
like the A23. It definitely makes it easier than with traditional rim
strips, but still takes a lot of time and effort and sometimes a wee bit of
swearing. I think my technique is passable, so maybe I've just had bad luck
with tire/rim combos (I can't remember what tire I was using with the A23s).

[RBW] Rim recommendations?

2018-05-25 Thread Eric Karnes
Hi guys-

So, it's finally time to replace my defective Sun CR-18s. I really like
Compass tires, but in the past have had real trouble fitting supple tires
on tubeless-compatible rims (which seem to be the majority of choices these
days). Open Pros have always been fantastic for me–quick pop off with a
lever or two, and easily reseated with just my hands and a bit of pressure.
Though they would work with Barlow Pass and Steilacooms (according to an
email with Compass), I'm wondering if something a bit wider would work
better. I was snooping around the H Plus Son Archetype and it gets pretty
positive reviews. Any experience with this rim and Compass tires? Or any
other recommendations for a wider-ish rim that handles supple tire changes
quickly and easily?

Thanks as always!

Definitely a 62cm. I have a 90pbh, and my 62 simpleone (which is similar in

[RBW] Re: Sim Works Getaround Bar clamp diameter?

2018-05-08 Thread Eric Karnes
I had this same issue on a recent (unusual) 25.4 drop bar and a nitto 26.0
stem. Without a shim it was a hair too loose and yet the shim didn't fit in
the gap. I used a large screwdriver to (very) gently pry open the clamp bit
by bit until I could slide the shim into the space. I'm sure this is the
incorrect way to do it, but carefully done, it worked great for me.

My SimpleOne is not only my favorite Riv, it's my favorite bike of all

Re: [RBW] OT but mentioned on the Blahg: Hiking

2018-05-03 Thread Eric Karnes
I third this. Though I'm not as hardcore as barefoot Deacon, I've found
simple low-cut shoes with a decent tread better than heavy boots for short
hikes (i.e. not traversing the Appalachian Trail). They work just fine 95%
of the time and like mountain biking without full-suspension, force/allow
you to pay more attention to your path/steps. And as an added bonus, you
probably already own them!

Depending on your location, I also second a hat. In addition to keeping off
sun, it guards against ticks falling into your hair (which is where they
are particularly hard to find). Although, as of last couple years, I no
longer have that problem. Sigh.

Other than that, wear comfortable clothes, bring water and maybe some
almonds, have access to a map (or the gps on your phone), and enjoy!

(bicycle-related or otherwise), the Riv one pretty damned good. Well
organized and easily navigable with just the right amount of Riv-ish quirky
randomness. And I've had nothing but great experiences with
ordering...except that time you guys sent me a suspended carbon frame
instead of the Roadeo I ordered.

Keep up the good work,

Eric

[RBW] Re: Made in Taiwan AHH?

2018-04-29 Thread Eric Karnes
Seems like a really smart move! My guess is that the MUSA Rivs have become
a bit out of reach for many potential customers...not to mention the
Waterford lead times. This (and the new Atlantis) should help solve that.
Still wish the ETTs were the same as the older models, but I've come to
terms with my own bizarre proportions. In my aged wisdom I'll stop
demanding random companies submit to my whims.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-21 Thread Eric Karnes
I agree. It seems that Riv's bikes are moving in a direction that coincides
less and less with my own bike needs and preferences. The significantly
longer top tubes make it almost impossible for my t-rex-like arms to
utilize multiple positions even on very swept-back bars (drops are
impossible at any height). And the super-long chainstays are really hard
for city-dwellers who have to cart their bike up and down steep and narrow
stairs on a regular basis.

Of course, these are simply my own personal needs and preferences. Grant
and Co. should absolutely evolve their offerings in directions that they
believe in. This may not jive with what I'm looking for and that's totally
reasonable. For everyone who isn't thrilled with the new designs, there is
likely someone who it. And who am I to tell someone like Grant to how to
design a bike? But from a strictly selfish perspective, I do hope that they
keep some offerings (such as the Sam and the MUSA frames) in the more
'traditional' riv model.

[RBW] Re: Rusted lugged frame still in heavy use pics.

2018-02-25 Thread Eric Karnes
Haha. I had the same thought, but...

that bike is really beautiful. Reminds me of a bike version of Tom Kundig's
industrial-modernist architecture. Practicality without even a clear coat
is another matter. I remember seeing a picture of an unfinished Roadeo once
where the clearcoat had worn off in places and had a really beautiful
patina.

[RBW] Re: PSA: 62cm Quickbeam Complete on Ebay

2018-02-18 Thread Eric Karnes
I concur. I have a 62cm SimpleOne and it is hands down the best bike I have
ever ridden. The perfect combination of sprightly and stable with what I
can only describe as intuitive handling. This might be heresy on this
forum, but I've owned two other Rivs, and both were just a tiny bit
disappointing compared to the SimpleOne. Granted, I'm pretty light for my
height, so the newer models are just too stout for me.
