Re: [RBW] Rivendell Garage Sale Saturday

2023-03-26 Thread Evan E.
Keith H. asked about the orange Rambouillet that is missing paint. Will of
Rivendell told me that the chainstay bridge and the seatstay bridges were
moved farther from the rear dropout to enable larger tires to fit. “I think
this frame will take 45s now,” he said. He didn’t say why the top tube and
downtube and head tube are now bare steel, and I didn’t think to ask. We
both just stood there and admired the frame.

2022-12-04 Thread Evan E.
Roberta asked: "Does your pedal really not wreck the soles of shoes or draw
blood?"

I have these "ANSJS" pedals on my commuter, and I like them:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08JPNYCJL

The pins on the ANSJS pedals, being slightly rounded or blunt, do not grip
as well as do the pins / spikes / grub screws on Thin Gripster pedals or on
VP Vice pedals, but I think they grip well enough for commuting, and they
gouge the soles of my shoes less -- and they are less apt to draw blood.

[RBW] Re: Hobbyist Tests 46 Rust Inhibitors on Steel

2022-10-17 Thread Evan E.
Hi Nick,

Yep! I think that Fluid Film was indeed the winner on that mtbr.com thread.
But Fluid Film didn't do nearly as well on DIY_Guy's test of 46 different
products. Also, I know that some bike people contend that Fluid Film isn't
thin or "flowy" enough to actually coat all of the insides of bike tubes.
Who knows? This DIY-Guy's test is just another evaluation to ponder -- and
another test with which to argue.

[RBW] Hobbyist Tests 46 Rust Inhibitors on Steel

2022-10-17 Thread Evan E.
Have you heard about the man who bought 46 different rust-prevention
products and tested them, side by side, on bits of steel? Here you go:

https://dayattherange.com/?page_id=3667

The gist: WD-40 Specialist Long-Term Corrosion Inhibitor and Frog Lube CLP
(cleaning, lubrication, rust prevention) are the two products that best
protected the steel against water and salt. The WD-40 corrosion inhibitor
has the usual safety warnings and hazard warnings. The Frog Lube is
"bio-based" and "non-hazardous in every way."

Speaking of rust prevention: I found a piece of steel, sanded it with
coarse sandpaper to make it shiny, and then treated it with what I had
handy: Butcher's Boston Polish paste wax, Boeshield T-9, J. P. Weigel's
Framesaver, and food-grade flax oil (a.k.a. raw and natural linseed oil). I
left the steel outdoors. Here is what the steel looked like after seven
days:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RogjxBAcQKTvtmP-TzD3ON_hlVWJDA8s/view?usp=sharing

On the morning of Day Eight and on the morning of Day Nine, I sprayed the
steel with a fine mist of salted water (one teaspoon of salt in a quarter
cup of water). This is what the steel looked like on the morning of Day
Eleven:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yWR9Qa7QjIjXwktKUPwNP6xSv6G3gL9R/view?usp=sharing

It appears the clear winner in my little evaluation is Framesaver. Please
note, however, that the food-grade flax oil had no chance at all since flax
oil reportedly takes four weeks to dry/cure/harden. Anyway: just wanted to
share this info with you-all in case you feel like spraying your bike tubes
with something or other.

Re: [RBW] What draws you to a single speed bike?

2021-04-23 Thread Evan E.
Roberta: I have just one thing to add to this thread. One of the things I
like most about single-speed is that it encourages effort. When I’m out on
my single-speed bike and I see a hill up ahead, I start pedaling harder
right away so that when I reach that hill I’ll get up it without suffering
too much. I live in a hilly place, so I ride with a steady threat of pain.
This threat keeps my feet spinning and my heart pumping, and that’s a good
thing. About halfway through each ride I’m reminded that I’m moving faster
than I do on my geared bike, and faster is fun.

I have been so inspired lately by one Pamela Murray out of Charlotte,
who rides a tiny 2011 Betty Foy. She is known to her community for her
 bike
activism and her bike safety course, Cycling Savvy. We “met” on social
 media.

The reason I find her so inspiring is her impressive mileage on her
Rivendell. She began riding an Electra Townie (2006, I believe) and put
5800 miles on it. In 2011, she bought her Betty Foy and she has now logged
an impressive *50,200* miles on her Betty.

50,200 miles. Since 2011. Just take that in for a moment...

Pamela rides rain or shine, everywhere, and for any reason. While some
of us are obsessing over n+1, upgrades, or aesthetics, she’s out there in
the true spirit of Rivendell, riding the wheels off her Riv and inspiring
her community to do the same. You can see her around town hauling pieces
 of
furniture she finds curbside, or donating 85 pounds of food she hauled for
Cranksgiving, growing her “bike benefits” program, and teaching others to
 safely cycle in the city.

Pamela is half my size and 5x as tough, and I doff my polka dot Nutcase
helmet to her. She. Is. The. Queen.

 Leah
PS I had Pam’s permission to post this thread and her photos.

[RBW] Re: New Roadini day + request for a good looking crankset recommendation

2020-09-16 Thread Evan E.
Ash,

If you search “FS - Suntour XC, XT, Dura Ace, Tires, etc.” on the iBOB
list, you’ll find a Sugino AT crankset, 170, offered from listmember David
KW for $50. The AT is a triple, but of course you could run it as a
compact double.

If you search for “Spa Cycles XD-2 Touring Cranks“ you’ll find unbranded
silver Sugino crank arms for 27 pounds sterling. Double or triple, with
arms 160, 165, 170, 172.5, or 175. I just saw a note on their site that
because of COVID they are not shipping outside of the UK. But perhaps that
will change? At any rate, the shipping costs about 20 pounds if I recall,
but hey, the crank arms cost 27 pounds. They offer complete cranksets, too.

Just two more options to consider!

Evan

Or a vintage Sugino AT. Either one is a classic. And either can be run as a

Or you could buy a new crank from Rivendell?

[RBW] Re: Recommendations on cycling to Rivendell and around San Francisco and the Bay Area

2019-09-14 Thread Evan E.
Hi Ana,

If by chance you'll still be in the Bay Area on October 13, you can join a
few of us Bay Area Rivendell Riders (Riv bike not required) for a pancake
ride to the West Point Inn on Mount Tam. Info here:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/bay-area-rivendell-riders/qxWmVLlBMfo

And if you won't be here then, you can still post a note on that list if
you like. I imagine that with enough notice, a few of us would be happy to
show you around or point you to some specific rides in the area.

Yep! I, too have no problem with e-bikes and e-scooters and motorcycles and
motor scooters. Just as long as they are not in the bike lane — that is, an
official lane, at the edge of the street or road, created for pedal-powered
bicycles. (It would also be awesome if the various motorized vehicles were
given an earth tax for whatever energy they entail or consume. But an
accurate tax would be hard to levy because one e-bike might be powered by a
windmill and another might be powered by a coal-burning plant, right?)

[RBW] Re: Pool noodle as a safety device

2019-05-19 Thread Evan E.
Good idea to use a pool noodle to establish a safety margin. But in San
Francisco, where I commute, one of those noodles would take up nearly the
whole bike lane, and then riders on e-bikes and scooters on e-scooters
couldn't whoosh past me, in silence, without warning, just inches away, at
20 mph. Or maybe they'd just bump the noodle out of the way as they went
by?

[RBW] Re: Mixed bag results: Fenders on my Leo

2018-12-19 Thread Evan E.
I've found, on my commuter bike, that the front fender (SKS Commuter) is
too short because it doesn't reach forward quite far enough to cover the
top, or apex, of the tire. Because of this shortfall, I can coast down a
hill on wet pavement and watch a stream of water leap off the front tire
and blow back toward my bike's frame, and toward my feet. Is this a
tragedy? Not at all. And I'm not suggesting that a shorter fender is a Bad
Thing. But I do see the value of a front fender (such as Honjo and many VO
fenders) that reaches just beyond the highest point of the tire.

[RBW] Re: Would you pay more for handlebars if they were safety-certified?

2018-06-29 Thread Evan E.
Benz asked: "So, is there any need for certification then?"

Good question. I, for one, think that certification is useful -- IF that
certification is a well-known industry standard, such as EN (which is the
only one I've ever heard of). I guess my main point is simply this: Most
retailers don't make clear if any given handlebar meets any given standard.
So all consumers can do is guess and hope. Yes, guessing and hoping seems
to works fine most of the time, since bars seldom break. But if even Nitto
makes bars of different strengths for different markets, I think that a
certification, such as a sticker on the handlebar or at least a note in the
product description, could help to explain the price of the handlebars --
and help Nitto and its retailers to justify those prices.

[RBW] Would you pay more for handlebars if they were safety-certified?

2018-06-29 Thread Evan E.
Short Version:

Would you pay more for handlebars (and stems) if the seller made clear that
those bars and stems meet established safety standards, such as EN
standards?

Long Version:

In a recent thread called "Dear Riv, Please Make a Wider Noodle," Grant
told a story about how Nitto was sued for a few handlebars that were broken
by some burly riders who leaned hard on them, even though the bars were
city bars not meant for rough riding. So that got me thinking:

Because Nitto tests its bars and stems, might they -- and their
distributors and dealers -- publish the strength standards that their bars
and stems meet?

If I were shopping for bars, I'd be willing to pay more for them if I knew they
met an industry standard for strength and safety. Most sellers don't say a
peep about safety certifications -- and don't even describe the conditions
under which the bars should be used. (Compass is an exception. They say
that all their Nitto bars "meet the most stringent EN 'Racing Bike'
standard for fatigue resistance.")

True story: A few years ago I spied, online, Nitto RM-013 bars, size 52,
that were not heat-treated. I was confused because Nitto Noodle bars of
similar width WERE heat-treated. Perhaps those non-heat-treated bars were
some of the inexpensive Nitto bars that Grant mentioned -- bars not
intended for large people riding on gravel and trails. But somehow those
unheated Nitto bars made it to the U.S. market. Yes, they cost about half
of what Noodles cost and what heat-treated RM-013s cost. And yes, I was
tempted to buy them. I figured, "They're Nitto, so they're safe, right?"

For the record: I doubt I could break any bars just by riding along. I
weigh 145 pounds. Please just humor me here and help me overthink. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Low/No Carb Electrolyte?

2018-06-10 Thread Evan E.
I, too, drink coconut water for potassium. As for salt, I just sprinkle a
generous amount of salt on the two boiled eggs that I eat in the morning
before a ride. That might suffice? Then again, near the end of a hot and
steep ride a few weeks ago, when both of my hamstring muscles cramped at
the same time, I pulled off the road, fished a salt packet out of my
Saddlesack (yep, a small paper packet from a fast-food restaurant), and
poured the salt down my gullet. The cramps stopped in ten seconds.
Psychosomatic? Maybe! But that direct hit of ordinary table salt did the
trick.

Re: [RBW] Re: Extreme Commuting--a checklist ride complete

2018-04-28 Thread Evan E.
Hi Deacon Patrick,

"Become a fat burner and see what happens." < Could you please explain, in
one paragraph, how to become a fat burner? I ask because a few year ago I
read "Eat Bacon Don't Jog," and I liked it, and I followed its diet regimen
for at least five months straight, and still today I eat a low-carb diet
with eggs for breakfast, and plenty of coconut butter and coconut oil and
grass-fed butter and sardines and kale and chicken and walnuts, etc. But
I'm still pretty sure I couldn't wake up in the morning, eat a teaspoon of
butter, go for a brisk four-hour ride, and feel great. For that I'd need to
be a true fat-burner, right?

If I need to read and follow another food-and-exercise book, I'm willing.
But I'd much rather just read a paragraph from you. So please, if you're
willing, do tell us how we can burn fat and ride with abandon.

Thank you,
Evan Elliot

Re: [RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-09 Thread Evan E.
Count me as another happy beneficiary of the EBDJ regimen. My HDL
cholesterol is now higher (that's a good thing) because of it.

If you're reading this and you somehow haven't already tried the EBDJ plan,
note two things:

1. "Paleo flu" is a thing. Know that for five, or ten, or twenty days after
you go low-carb, you may well feel sluggish, irritable, headachy. Stay the
course. It gets better.

2. In addition to coconut oil being awesome, coconut butter

is pretty great, too. It's pureed coconut meat, so it's not as oily as oil,
but it still contains plenty of oil and fat and calories. I find the butter
much easier to eat from a spoon than coconut oil. But the butter doesn't
melt easily into coffee, so you'll want oil for that. Add some grass-fed
butter to your coffee, too. Tastes good. People will think it's even more
disgusting than oil, alone, in your coffee.

Re: [RBW] Re: Houseless Sam Hillborne in Portland, Oregon

2018-02-02 Thread Evan E.
Yep! At what point does a "the owner didn't claim it" bike become "my
bike"? When I saw that Sam in San Francisco, locked up outdoors for months
on end, I twice placed an ad on Craigslist asking the owner that if she or
he no longer wanted that Sam Hillborne parked somewhere in the city, I'd be
interested in buying it. No reply. Not that I expected one. But I was
sincerely trying to get that bike back indoors -- and preferably reunited
with the owner who locked it up.

Re: [RBW] Re: Houseless Sam Hillborne in Portland, Oregon

2018-02-01 Thread Evan E.
About five years ago I occasionally walked past an orange Sam Hillborne
that had been locked up in one place, outdoors, for so long that the
components were all rusted and the spokes were a tangle of spider webs. I
stopped by my local police station and asked an officer if the owner could
be notified. Or, failing that, was there a specific point at which a locked
bike could be considered abandoned? The officer said no. And he added that
no matter how long that bike might sit, "it's someone else's property."
Fair enough. I stopped wondering about the bike. Then a few months later, I
walked past Sam's parking place and the bike was gone. I never knew if a
thief took it or the owner came back to claim it.

If you have a Mark's rack, I think the medium basket is a good choice

Re: [RBW] Re: 650b tires: the fat and the skinny about them?

2017-12-15 Thread Evan E.
Patrick Moore asked: "So what does 'optimum' mean here?"

There is, of course, no such thing as "optimum width" for a 650B tire,
because different riders have different druthers. But if I recall, Jan took
pains to test different tire widths until he determined what is, according
to him, the optimum width of 650B tire -- that is, for most riders, most of
the time, on the surfaces that most of us ride on (such as bumpy roads,
cracked pavement, etc.). For what it's worth, I'm perfectly happy with
650x38s on my city commuter. But I'm even happier with 650x42s on my road
bike. If Tom likes his Hutchinson Confrérie des 650B tires at about 33mm
wide, awesome!

[RBW] Re: 650b tires: the fat and the skinny about them?

2017-12-14 Thread Evan E.
Tom,

If you really want narrow 650B tires, you can buy Grand Bois Cypres 650Bx32
tires from the company's website
<https://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1=en=search=translate.google.com=ja=nmt4=http://www.cyclesgrandbois.com/SHOP/T650_F32_SS.html=ALkJrhgDEI4jvXF9B4DVjYkDtlqSNd_DKw>

in Japan. But I think that, yes, if you go wider, such as the 650Bx38 Loup
Loup Pass from Compass, or the 650Bx38 Pari-Moto, you'll get the
combination of comfort, speed, and traction that 650B tires offer. (Col de
La Vies are far less supple and plush.) And in fact, I think that a few
years ago Jan Heine of Bicycle Quarterly/Compass determined, through
testing, that 42mm is the optimum width for performance on 650B tires. This
is especially true on rough roads where a wide tire soaks up bumps that
would, on narrower tires, cause "suspension losses" that slow you down. So:
your current tires might be the ideal width, after all.

[RBW] Re: Calling Ron Mc for handlebar comparison photo

2017-11-25 Thread Evan E.
Hi Alan,

I recall that photo, but can't find it. But just in case it helps, here's
some research I did, a while back, on four similar bars:

- Nitto B2522 Jitensha bar: aluminum, 580mm wide, no rise

- Ahearne + MAP bar: aluminum, 575mm or 615mm wide, 25mm rise

- VO Postino bar: aluminum, 570mm wide, no rise

- Nitto B206 Nordeast bar: chromoly, 525mm wide, 15mm rise

Yes, they differ in finish and they may vary in durability, but it's hard
to tell for sure since most handlebar retailers don't mention results of EN
testing or other tests.

[RBW] Wanted: 650b Rear Wheel, or Advice on Which to Buy

2017-09-23 Thread Evan E.
Do you have a silver, 32-spoke, 130-spaced 650b rear wheel sitting around
forlorn? If so, I'd
like to buy it or at least take a look (in person or in pictures) for my
new-to-me Rambouillet. If not, I have a dilemma I'm sure you-all can help
me with:

1. Invest in a proper rear wheel, built by Rich Lesnick.
~ or ~
2. Check my LBS to see what they have.
~ or ~
3. Buy these BIKE 650B WHEELSET RIM BRAKE 27.5 SLVR 130 MM HUB 8/10 SPD WEI
ZAC19 36 H wheels from UglyRM on eBay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BIKE-650B-WHEELSET-RIM-BRAKE-27-5-SLVR-130-MM-HUB-8-10-SPD-WEI-ZAC19-36-H-/252604585112?hash=item3ad0681498:g:9f8AAOSw8RJXCUGl

Yes, door #3 is the cheap path. The spokes are 36, and straight gauge (I
think?), and may not be tensioned properly. The Zac19 rims may be a pain to
mount tires on. The hubs might be mediocre. But that price though.

Please talk some sense into me. Budget wheels aren't, right?

Thanks,

year I tried two different popcorn poppers over a few months, with green
beans from Sweet Maria's and elsewhere, and had decent but inconsistent
results, mostly inferior to the various roasted whole-bean coffees that I
could buy. And the price for green beans, including shipping, wasn't all
that much lower.

This is a great thread! Thanks, everybody, for the details, such as *Behmor
1600 *and *Mr. Green Beans *from John.

[RBW] Re: Current location(s) for visiting Rivendell?..

2017-07-24 Thread Evan E.
Hi Max,

As far as I know, Rivendell headquarters is the only Rivendell place to
visit when you're in the Bay Area. They do have a showroom there, though.
And, as you likely already know, a bunch of friendly Riv folk.
