[RBW] Kickstand bolt size

Hi guys any idea what size of bolt can fit on the kickstand? Planning to
replace my bolt to allen head. I'm using the BL select greenfield by the
way. Thanks

[RBW] Re: [650B] Re: and now a 42mm 650B Pasela

2014-12-17 Thread JL
These don't seem to have a boutique price to me. $50 per tires at a brick and
mortar shop seems about right for a Pasela PT in (almost) 2015. Last time I
priced Pasela TG in 700c they were $45ish. This same 650b tire in wire bead has
a riv retail of $38 which seems pretty swell by my wallet. I bet there is a non
PT (new style of TG tires) version for even less. Online retailers often have
Paselas on sale at a very low margin but that is a different economic model and
I don't feel the comparison is fair.

I would buy these tires if I had a 650b that I didn't ride that often and just
wanted tires on it for the occasional trip. Unfortunately Panaracer used the
thicker and less comfortable tread pattern they have on this run of tires.

Pasela. Riv has it for $50 650B x 42 Pasela

It's nice that these are available but it's kind of a bummer that there is a
boutique premium on the 650B size compared to 700C or 27 or 559 sizes. The
non-Tg wire bead Paselas are commonly available in the low $20 range
(sometimes even lower on sale) and the folding TG models in the $30 bracket.
As Steve P said I don't feel a folding TG Pasela should be in the same price
bracket as a Hetre (which is already about the same price as high end
 Challenge clinchers for example).

Presumably that means Merry Sales has them, so your LBS can get it for you
as well. If, like me, you've had decent luck with the 650Bx38 Soma New

Re: [RBW] There will be a SILVER crank late in 2015

My guess is that the new crank is a 110 with 74 and 58 triple drillings, like
how some TA zephyr models came. That crank offers a wide variety of

Re: [RBW] Anyone using the VO Rando rack with integrated decaler on their Rivbike?

2014-10-28 Thread JL
The velo orange rando rack does not attach to the front or rear of the brake
bolt, rather, it attaches to the underside of the fork with a daruma. This can
be the same daruma bolt that fenders are attached to if needed. I had one of
these racks (non built in decaleur) and the workmanship was quite bad. The
welds were big and uneven, and the tang that fits under the fork crown was
welded on off center. My experience was that the rack twisted and flexed along
the tang, and rotated under even the lightest loads.

It is a challenge to mount a front rack to a bike with side pull brakes no
matter how you slice it.

Re: [RBW] Looking for a 54cm rambouillet

2014-09-26 Thread JL
Rod,

That bike you describe is very worthy. I had that same model once upon a time.
I would like to point out that even if 32/33mm tires can fit under fender on
this bike. It is far from ideal; most fenders wont work, the brake choice
matters as well a few smaller factors. I eventually switched to 28mm tires
under fenders or 32 without (larger can fit). All of the factors had to line up
in a certain way for the fender and 32+ to fit and it was troublesome for me to
keep the setup just so.

Re: [RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH

2014-09-10 Thread JL
When I had my Saluki, an early cantilever one, I used Berthoud 60mm stainless
fenders. The 50mm model did not offer enough clearance on the sides of the
Hetres for my tastes. Perhaps a bike with more vertical clearance can work
with the 50mm fenders easier. Others have used them but I much prefer a
flatter, wider fender profile. The fenders are often sold as 26x60mm. They work
over 42-45mm 650b fenders with no hassle. Keep in mind that you will need to
trim the fork crown daruma to clear the tire.

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam 52cm?

2014-09-01 Thread JL
I have an 80cm PBH and ride a 54cm Quickbeam. To my measurements a 52 would be
too small and cramped for drops and certainly so for upright bars. I think all

 2. availability - were the 50 and 52 frame sizes only available in
Silver/650b? Did any of the other production runs include those sizes? I'm

 3. Sam Hillborne - would this be a good alternative to be built up as a

Re: [RBW] Cheese

With apologies to all of you, who collectively contribute to this list on a

certainly off topic. FDA over regulation is important in the world no doubt,
just not in an RBW thread.
Would you all mind saying last words on the issue and moving back to bikes and

Yes. :) The make those as well as Grand Bois, Bruce Gordan RR, Rivendell,
Soma, Pacenti, and I might have forgotten some.
One good example of this is the SomaX Ocean Air Cycles co venture - the Soma
CLine. The Cline is essentially a supple 38mm folding version of the Pasela
700x37c tire but with no added flat protection (low pressure and careful riding
do enough for many folks) and the tread from the 35mm Pasela, with multiple
color options.

All of the tire lines I mentioned above have some grand-slam-dunks. Find some
that fit the bikes you ride and give them a go.

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam's Pedigree...

2014-06-01 Thread JL
You are right about the slackening of the angles when sliding the wheel back.
For some reason I wasn't imagining the hub as the fixed point.

The ram only had a 73degree ht angle in size 60 and above. Below that it
ranged from 71-72.5 in for different angles depending on frame size. QB had a
72.5 ht on all sizes 54-68. I don't know about the 650b wheeled 52 and 50cm
sizes. The rodeo and ram do not share the same geometry, although they are
similar. The Roadeo has varied st and ht angles depending on size.

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam's Pedigree...

2014-06-01 Thread JL
If i remember correctly: typically a reynolds 753 tubeset was 757 with an 858
down tube. The 753 rivendells had a longer 7 section in the seat tube.

Reynolds 531c was slightly thicker inside with 858 and a 10710 downtube.

Reynolds 501 and some of the ishiwatta tubes where 969 in all tubes.

These tubesets had only two thicknesses on the seat tube: 969 would have a 96
seat tube and 858 would be 85, etc

Of course this only amounts to good archival information and a bike frame is
more than the sum of it's parts.

I would consider that an homage to the iconic Atlantis 2. This post-fixie city

angle it looks like they are also taking queues from Surly. I bet they are good

Yes. It almost certainly will. I was allowing for repaints or possible

don't know what it is about kickstands plates that bother me. I just don't like
the aesthetics of the plate and never use a kickstand. I don't have an out of

The m12 racks are slick but the 32F has the same finish as my nitto rear rack
and would allow my to use Paul brakes without the rack being far out in front
of the fork blades.
The tragic thing is I could have bought one of two different beams a couple

Oh well. I have plenty of time. :)

Re: [RBW] Best Nitto handlebars for Shimano 105 shifters?

2014-03-19 Thread JL
The combination of shimano sti levers, which have long hoods, and nitto noodle
bars is not ideal. The hood length on non sti brake levers is much shorter - my
guess would be about 1.5cm shorter. Nitto noodles already have a long ramp.
That, and the location of the curve make the noodle/sti match troublesome. The
shape of shimano's sti levers does not help the matter. Try nitto bars with a
shorter ramp and different curve profile. M176, M185, M186, and M195 The
185 has a more traditional bend than some of the others.
Noodles have a reach of 96mm, if you move to a bar with a reach of around 80mm
it should work better.

I recently went through this process, hence all the information. I opted to go
with ritchey biomax bars.

Here is a link to someone's blog (not mine) that includes a pretty exhaustive
list of Nitto handlebars and their information.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best Nitto handlebars for Shimano 105 shifters?

2014-03-19 Thread JL
Rob,
Ergobrifters have a different shape than shimano STI. The Campi models are more
forgiving of bar shape. You might be right about being leas sensitive though.
The challenge comes when about one wants multiple hand positions.
SRAM levers have adjustable lever distance. Maybe that is a solution for you?

[RBW] Tires in the Goldilocks zone (was Grant on tires)

2014-03-16 Thread JL
I bet Riv will stock the new Soma Grand Randonneur tires. I could see the brown
sidewall enforced model being a big hit with them. They look like they could be
a road slick cousin to the FFFR. I think that tire in particular seems like a
gateway into either more supple tire options, or more stout tire options,
depending.

Re: [RBW] Appaloosa Prototype on Blug?

2014-03-12 Thread JL
Starting sometime in 2011 or 2012 Grant had some frames built with a second set
of chainstays that extended from the added diagonal tube. These extra
chainstays eventually morphed into a decorative option where the stays bent
whimsically in opposing directions. The tentacular stays made it onto a few
bombadils, the pre-order appaloosa models, and Leisel's custom, among others.
As this blue bike is a prototype is could be missing the special stays as a
future cost saving measure, or as a cost/time reduction for prototyping. We
will just have to wait and see.

I have a hard time seeing the advantage of this bike model over the Cheviut or
the Bombadil special order model. That said, it looks like it is going to be a
great bicycle and I am sure everyone who buys one will be more than pleased.

Re: [RBW] Poll: What are your single speed gears?

2014-03-12 Thread JL
Bill,

Your math and plan seem spot on! FWIW the dos eno freewheels come in a 2 tooth
difference. 16/18, 17/19, or 20/22. If you have a secret vender for a 16/19
(or greater) let me know. I would buy one in a heartbeat.

I have recently gotten back into single speed riding and on my Trek I have a
42x20 freewheel. I had plans to use a two speed fixed gear setup but ended up
with a white industries wheelset. They make two speed freewheels but need
proprietary fixed gear cogs. My freewheel set up with 57 gearing works well
for me here in the san francisco hills.

My two speed plan were to use a 17/21 Surly Dingle cog and a 38x34 110
crankset. Which would yield a high gear of 60 and a low of 44. The 60 gear
would be my all around gear and the low gear would just be used as a knee saver
for long and steep climbs or a slow gear for dirt paths. To me the 4t total
difference from the dos eno freewheels is good for terrain changes (roads to
offroad for example) but don't offer the same sort of flat ground to steep hill
change you may be looking for. Single speeds are so sweet though, once you
find a gear that works you don't miss the other ones.

I have a build concept for a SimpleBeam kind of thing. The steep hill I live
on completely rules out a singlespeed for the uphill part, and rules out
riding fixed for the downhill part. Still, I notice that for my commute I
use a particular small handful of gears. It makes me think that it is
plausible for me to build a 2-speed, using a White 16/19 on the back and two
chainrings on the front with 3-teeth of difference, so I could have one rear
 wheel position.

Right now my concept is a 35/38 in front with the 16/19 in back. My two
 gears: 35x19 and 38x16 would be 50 and 64 with 27 diameter wheels (700x32).
 On a 110mm BCD, I could alternatively easily run a 36/39, a 39/42, a 40/43 or
a 42/45 in front without having to chase down any weird chainrings.
 On a 94mm BCD, I could run a 29/32 for offroady stuff.

As a shifting maneuver, I'd loosen the right side bolt. Stick-shift the
chain from big-to-small and then from small-to-big. Then tighten the right
side bolt again and ride away.

Anyway, by my numbers, spinning at 110RPM with a 27 diameter wheel is 21mph,
which is plenty fast for road cruising for me, especially when I can coast
downhills. I think I can handle the 50 gear up my hill as well.

I wonder what others feel they need. I know Patrick Moore zens out with a
slow metronome cadence climbing with 70-something gear inches. Who else
thinks my two speeds are a bad idea?

Re: [RBW] Re: Brifters on a country bike

2014-03-10 Thread JL
Per the OP question: yes, ride brifters it sounds like a good setup.
FWIW campi and Sram integrated brake shifters have shorter hoods than Shimano
shaped levers. The campi and Sram style are also more similar in shape to each
other, and similar in shape to brake only levers. For me there is a sweet spot
for bar setup that puts the flat section of bars, brake levers, ramps, and bar
to brake transition angle that was greatly disrupted when attempting to mate
Shimano 10s brifters with nitto noodle bars. I switched to ritchey biomax bars
with a short ramp to compensate for the shape of the levers. The campi and sram
levers are easier to achieve the right balance with traditional shaped bars.

Re: [RBW] Just what is oversized tubing?

2014-02-17 Thread JL
AASHTA

From Sheldon Brown's glossary

Larger in diameter than the traditional sizes. This term is commonly used
forheadsets and frame tubing. Oversized parts are stiffer, and can be lighter
for their weight if the walls are made thin enough. If the walls become too
thin, however, they become too easy to damage by denting.
Traditional forks used 1 (25.4 mm) diameter steerers. Oversized steerers are 1
1/8 (28.6 mm) or, less commonly, 1 1/4 (31.8 mm). Details on sizes are listed
under headsets.

Traditional frames used 1 (25.4 mm) top tubes, 1 1/8 (28.6 mm) seat tubesand
down tubes, and 1 1/4 (31.8 mm) head tubes. When BMX racing became popular,
frames built to these old standards couldn't always hold up to the rigors of
BMX competition. Since the wide availability of T.I.G. welding freed designers
from the need to use tubes that would fit standard-size lugs, oversized tubing
became the norm for BMX frames. This design and technology were later adopted
by builders of mountain bikes.

In the interest of improved chainwheel/tire clearance, some mountain bikes have
oversized bottom brackets, with a shell width of 73 mm, rather than the
standard 68 mm.

[RBW] Wtt tech deluxe 110 for tech 100

2013-12-15 Thread JL
Hello rbw gang,

I have a 110mm technomic deluxe in good condition that is a little too long and
a little too low. I would really like to trade it for a standard technomic
stem at 100mm or even 90mm to get the bars up higher. A talluxe would be fine
too but I would rather have a 25.4 stem clamp than use a shim for my bars

Any takers?

[RBW] FS: cbO racks,brooks,bags / honjo 700c

2013-12-08 Thread JL
I offer up a couple things to bay area folks, sorry no shipping.

Honjo 700x45c fenders with stays, no clips or daruma. Great for 700x28c tires/
can work with 700x32 given the right vertical clearance is already there. $50

Bridgestone cb0. Tig welded, paint is old and ugly. Vertical drop outs,
brazeons all over (not mid fork though), nitto big bacl rack and mini front
racks installed, brooks b17 special, nitto albatross bars and bar end shifters,
26 inch wheels, marathon plus tires. This bike is a 56cm c-top size. Picture
it as a low cost bike that can do the atlantis role. $500

Email off list for a pic of, or buy, either item.
Thanks

Good point. The suntour ones are some of my favs. The Sprint and Superbe that

On this particular bike i wanted to try out STI shifting and 10s chains so I

Re: [RBW] Re: quickbeam/S.O. questions

Philip,

Looking over your flickr photostream I think you are just the person to ask a
few questions of. :)

What was your experience like with the dingle (double singlespeed for the
archives) setup? I am very curious about this setup option.

How is the sizing on the quickbeam? Long? Tall? Short? Stout? I hope that
question makes sense. I have owned both a Saluki and a Rambouillet and they
fit a bit different from each other. How did you decide on the size you got?

Any fender solutions that worked better than others? Is the rear facing track
ends easier or more difficult to fender mod than forward facing drop outs?

Thanks

[RBW] why asymetric?

2013-08-03 Thread JL
I was giving my commuter bike CBO a quick check over and noticed that the
crankset sits asymetric to the frame. It has never bothered me but my
question is - aside from cranks that are made offset so an asymetrical BB
actually aligns them symetrically - what is the purpose of asymetrical
BBs? I imagine the argument that it allows the chainrings to clear the
chainstay, or chainline to be zeroed in and usually people dont notice
could be made. I have a hard time imagining a design that intends
someone's legs to pedal like that for long periods of time. Does anyone
know an historic or design origin for the asym bb?

Re: [RBW] why asymetric?

2013-08-03 Thread JL
So the theory is that low q is ranked higher than having one's legs/feet/ankles
rotating in different circles? That doesn't sit right with me but i am
probably over thinking it. Rivendell's advocacy of pedaling free would address
this issue but I don't care for it. It doesn't bother me on my commute bike
with toe clips but on other bikes with spd style clips i worry it would cause
issues. I don't know enough about annatomy and leg mechanics to confirm that
however.

This was also sent as a reply to group via phone test. Patrick Moore if you
get this twice then it has started working.

I imagine the argument that it allows the chainrings to clear the chainstay,

I have a hard time imagining a design that intends someone's legs to pedal

My PBH is 87.5 and I'm 5'10.5. I have a 56 cm Breezer Downtown EX which, if
I read the geo charts correctly, has a longer virtual tt length than the 56

So..should I get a 56 web special, save a few bucks, enjoy the standover

price which I suspect would fit my upper body length better but might a
little much in standover height? I'm pretty sure Riv would recommend going
bigger. At PBH of 87.5 I just barely make the 58 cm Sam cutoff of 87 and up.
87 is also the max listed for the new 55. I probably couldn't go wrong

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Nitto Soba Handlebars

2013-08-02 Thread JL
I hope this clears up the confusion:

The picture in the flickr post shows a comparison between B177 Nitto Noodle
Bars Soba version and the RM 013 Nitto Dirt Drop Bar.

The bar on the top of the pic is the Dirt Drop with the clamp sleve, flat
bar and wide flare. - size 48 (of 46, 48, and 51 options)

The bar on the bottom is the Soba with a backward bend to the bars, clamp
bulge, and less flare. - size 46 (of 41,42,44,46, and maybe 48 options)

The picture is mislabeled - or deceptively labeled. In English we read
from top to bottom, left to right. The bar on the top should intuitively be
the first one listed in the caption, it isn't. I think the Soba version of
Nitto bars has a different production number than B177 but I could not find
and answer to that.

11 in the hooks. On t'way back, rode the '99 Joe gofast fixed gear, same SE
sidewind, 400 foot climb, 3/4 of which on one 4/10 mile hike up the side of
the mesa. Just shy of 15 mph clock running.

The Ram has very nice, plump 30 mm Parigi Roubaix, tho' not the original hand
glued ones; the gofast has supple but too skinny 22 mm Michelin Pro Race 3s.

As much as I like the Ram, the gofast just feels bester and fatter -- I
mean, better and faster. Usually on a fixed at 65 to 70 I bail for the last
2/10 mile on the steep climb, for the steepest section, but I consistently
make it all the way up on the gofast despite the higher gear (I climb it in a
 50 on the Ram).

Somehow, the '99 has hit all the magic numbers: setback, tilt, height, bar
height, reach, lever angle, bar angle. The '03 errand Curt that largely
mimics the '99 is very close but not exact; I tilted the bar upward a wee bit
yesterday and now it is almost spot on.

The Ram, I think, needs the bar to come up 1/4 or so: right now it is about
1/2 higher than those of the two customs, but with a 9 cm stem instead of
8s, about 1/2 further forward (saddle much the same). I did raise the brake
levers about 1/2, so I'll try that before fiddling with bar height. Noodles
(Ram, more drop, 90/140 versus Maes copies' 115/125; Noodle 42 at hoods
versus 37 or so for the Maes copies.)

I was just thinking that I hope Riv gets a few of these saddles in stock.
They have been supportive of Brooks as a brand and cyclists who want
alternatives to leather products in the past so it seems plausible. I
don't need a new saddle but I am curious how this compares to my Brooks.

FWIW I think Brooks is marketing this saddle as an all weather model and
giving that reason for the change in materials. I would be shocked if
consumer requests for a non-leather saddle made in a hammock style like
their other saddles are was not part of their decision process though.

The times that I have tried Mustache Bars I felt like I could never get

have helped in those situations. I realize now that I was trying to make

designed as an interesting bar for going quick and I wanted a multi-hand

David, seeing where you live and ride a Dirt Drop X Mustache style bar.

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the Rivish upgrade from Synergy rims?

2013-05-23 Thread JL
Toshi,

Is this with 650b or 700c tires?

I like the A23 rims as a lighter faster rim, but it is harder to
mount tires on them compared to the Synergy rim, for which I don't
need tools to mount a tire. Whereas, with the A23s, I definitely need
levers. This means longer flat repair times for me, but maybe it will
get easier as the tires wear in...
