Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone used Gravelking 650b x 38 mm tubeless

2019-11-14 Thread John McBurney
I stand corrected. I am surprised. I run Compass 42 x 700 and 38 x 700
tubeless and 28 x 700 with tubes. I assume the 39 x650b reflects stock on
hand. I ran into this with Bruce Gordon (God rest his soul) Rock and Road
where the 700 s were not tubeless being made with a previous generation
mold but 650b were tubeless compatible. Maybe the Compass 650b 38s tube
required will sell out. May be worth an email to compass

Re: [RBW] Re: Drivetrain Hack

2019-11-10 Thread John McBurney
Thank you! The front rack is a custom that I bought with the frame. It’s
as deep as Marks rack or similar but wider. It’s as wide as the Acorn rando
box. It attaches to the fork by boxing out the brake. I decided to splurge
on Paul Centerpull centermount brakes and the normal ways these would have
been difficult at best.

Honestly if I don’t get decent life out of this cassette I’ll go 9 speed
11-40 index in order to try to get better steel. BTW the FD is an Ultegra.

I really like the narrow double as an alternative to a 1X or triple when
combined with the wider range cassette. BTW if you go with the 34-46 and
11-40 you’ll be right at the gear capacity of the XT 9 speed speed Shadow
RD (41 teeth)

There are higher tooth capacity RD. For example the Microshift Advent will
shift a 42 and has 47 tooth gear capacity. It also has a clutch. It is only
supposed to work with their shifters so friction shifting solves that.

Well don’t forget I augered into a sand pit and literally filled the right
brifter with sand. I think I did a really good job cleaning it out but you
can only so so much.

The DA bar cons are nice in friction. Gotta be careful standing though. I
was hoping to use my Riv down tube shifters ( like sun tour superbe pro but
pull more cable) but the frame wasn’t set up for them.

I hope my “addiction to friction” will be able to continue and make all
this moot.

Re: [RBW] Re: Drivetrain Hack

2019-11-08 Thread John McBurney
Hi Joe,

Thanks for your observation. In the many generations of this bike I ran 105
9 speed brifters with this derailleur. It shifted “ok” but not great. I was
told that with the Shadow XT mech that the road and mountain parted ways
and weren’t compatible. Of course I’d also used those on my cross race bike
and crashed in a sand pit filling the right side with sand. 

This will only be an issue if I can’t get 8 speed cassettes of good
quality.

I just did a 35 mile ride with 3000 feet climbing going over Paris
mountain. At several points along the 2 mile 1000 ft climb the grade is
well over 10% and at the finish it’s over 15%. Sitting and spinning at
80-90 rpm on those climbs is a revelation.

But when we go up we must also go down. The 113 gear inch 46-11 is pretty
fast and I rarely spun out descending.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bicycle Lights for Commuting

2019-11-05 Thread John McBurney
I have a number of battery powered lights as well as dynamo light, the Bush
and Mueller IQ-x Senso. Love the beam and the brightness.

The slickest battery powered light I have is the Knog PWR which comes in a
variety of sizes and light outputs. The form factor and fact that it can
double as a battery bank to recharge a phone or other device sets it apart.

https://www.cycleexif.com/knog-pwr-review

https://cyclingtips.com/2017/08/knog-pwr-lights-review/

I also like Light and Motion urban line which comes in a variety of
strengths and are US Made.

This is an interesting model:

https://www.lightandmotion.com/shop/bike-lights/lights-for-urban-cycling/rando-500

For commuting the night rider 900 boost is nice because it is easy to get
on and off the bike.

https://www.niterider.com/product/6781-lumina-1200-boost/

But I never or almost never use high with my lights when commuting in urban
areas with street lights etc. 1200 or even 1000 lumens is over kill in my
opinion. But a high lumen light has a higher amp battery so more life on
lower settings.

I run Cliffhangers tubeless with Compass 44 front and 38 rear. No problems.

Other options could include Pacenti Brevet for a traditional look and HED

Garth

It’s not a bad idea. I do get more joy from giving things away than the
cash brings. In the past few months I’ve given my Scott Sub 10 belt drive
bike to a young couple and that makes me very happy.

However in this instance I need to raise some money to fund another bike
project without pissing my wife of 40 years off too much. I did offer it at
roughly half of what it has been valued here to a local friend but he was
unable to take advantage of the opportunity In this instance the joy will
come not from maximizing profit but rather in the knowledge that someone
who really loves these bikes will be able to enjoy it.

It truly is special and I know someone will be very happy with it.

Re: [RBW] ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread John McBurney
In the bright daylight neon clothing is helpful. I have a very lightweight
Descent nylon neon wind vest made for runners that I wear during hot
weather. During fall and spring I like my Sugoi reflective and convertible
jacket-vest. It’s neon when it’s daylight, but covers your torso in
reflective dots when lights hit it in the dark. It’s too warm for hot
weather but since the sleeves attach with magnets it’s pretty versatile.
Waterproof but not for a long downpour.

My go to for winter all conditions is a Showers Pass Club Visible jacket
and Refuge Pants. Neon. waterproof. Wind proof. Lots of reflection.

One thing to consider is movement. Wheel light or good reflectors do this
in the dark. I like Flektr wheel reflectors. I backed their indie go go
campaign last year and supported them again this year.

[RBW] Leather Saddle Care

2019-07-07 Thread John McBurney
I have several leather saddles on various bikes. For example I have a
vintage brooks B17 Pro, and a vintage a Ideale model 90. I try to take
really good care of them. I have covers for rain and I use Obenaufs LP. As
well as occasional Proofhide or Martexin Wax. These are older saddles. No
idea how old the brooks is but suspect the Ideale is over 40.

So even though they never get rained on this time of year the get really
wet from sweat from my shorts on long hot rides. I’m noticing it’s harder
to maintain the integrity of the surface of the saddle, the shiny outer
layer. These are really becoming well adapted to my anatomy but I don’t
want to ruin them.

Any ideas?

Re: [RBW] Is this Compass tire usable?

2019-07-02 Thread John McBurney
I’m not a tire expert but I do have Compass tires on 4 bikes and run 28 c
tubies on the fifth. If it was me I doubt I’d run it. But let me say that
I had a very similar tire destruction running Marathon Supremes commuting
through the SE warehouse district in Portland. It lead me to adopt really
stiff and slow tires like the Marathon Plus. I was shocked when I took them
off just how heavy they are. And crazy stiff.

I’d just replace it and hope for better luck. Run a boot and tube till
then.

Re: [RBW] Paul motolite reviews?

2019-05-15 Thread John McBurney
I’ve got motolites on my Bombadil and they are great. On my 650b bike with
Paul levers they are very strong and modulate well. They are very
adjustable including toe in. Because of the range of adjustment you can use
them on a variety wheels and bikes. It might be possible to run both 650b
and 700c wheels on some frames with this rim brake but please confirm that.

Plus they exude hand made quality.

My 2 cents

Re: [RBW] Plus Tires for GBW

2019-05-01 Thread John McBurney
I didn’t see the follow up post where you said 27.7 which is obviously
27.5.

I struggle with the same question. I have a 650b/27.5 Bombadil running
Compass extralight Switchback Hill 48s which I absolutely love. These tires
are magic. I will not comment on flats due to a superstitious nature.

These are the biggest 650b tires Compass/Rene Herse offers. However they
now offer a knobby version of this tire.

Even more interestingly they recently introduced a 55x700 tire, the
antelope hill. I can’t imagine a larger 650b tire is far behind. It might
be worth an email or call.

All that said, what is in my quiver for this summer and fall mixed surface
adventures on my Bombadil are Bruce Gordon Rock n Road 43 ( with fenders)
and perhaps more interesting to you Panaracer Pacentti Quasimoto 27.5 x 2
(no fenders) I have these on the shelf ready to mount but have not ridden
them.

Re: [RBW] Re: Singletracking/Offroading with Dynamo Lights and Hubs

2019-05-01 Thread John McBurney
If I’m in a situation where I think I might need a
More light for a period of time during a bike packing adventure I might be
tempted to carry one of my many battery lights to use as a supplement.

I do find the beam pattern of the IQ-X to be compelling though. The very
worst night ride I ever experienced was in a 24 hour mountain bike race
near Olympia WA (The 24 Hours of Capitol Punishment) when about 1 am a
thick fog rolled in off of the Puget Sound. In that stuff a head light was
just blinding and totally counterproductive. The best option was to run the
light on the bike (mounted on handlebars) at low. But I also realized that
light scatter bothered me and reduced my dark adaptation even when it
wasn’t foggy. When I rode the IQ-X in the dark for the first I was amazed
at the difference the light pattern made. My dark adaptation was better
preserved and I am much more comfortable with my peripheral vision

Re: [RBW] Velocity NoBS vs. Atlas?

2019-04-30 Thread John McBurney
I went through the same decision process when rebuilding my wheels before
doing the C/GAP ride last Oct. I was loaded out with bike, panniers and
rider at 290 Lbs. My wheels were 32 spoke on a belt drive IGH bike.

The trail was in pretty bad shape and in portions near Paw Paw WV there was
deep standing water that lead me to drop into some pretty deep holes.

The wheels came through unscathed.

I spec’d Sapim Strong spokes along with NoBS rims.

They are a nice width.

Recommended.

Re: [RBW] Mystery bike in April Blahg

2019-04-29 Thread John McBurney
I was really thinking about gravel riding where you might encounter
occasional stretches of single track and when you might need to push into
the night to make a goal, make up for lost time, get back on schedule.
When I was doing 24 hour MTB races I thought it was important to have the
main light on the bike so you could see where you are headed and a smaller
helmet light to look into turns. It’s great if you can recharge or stop
after a lap and change batteries. In a multi day bikepacking adventure
battery capacity, battery weight and recharging are issues.

FWIW the bikepackers on FB are running dynamo systems. The leading edge
systems charge batteries that run lights and recharge devices. The best
charge both from dynamo and solar. For straight dynamo systems the issue is
lower power output below 10 mph.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mystery bike in April Blahg

2019-04-29 Thread John McBurney
I agree, running a light in the daytime front and rear has meant fewer
encounters with motorists. I have a dynamo only on the Bombadil but I
really like it. My new Bush and Mueller IQ-X is always on I don’t have to
think about it. I du have a rear light hooked up too but also run a bright
100 lumen daytime flasher on the rear.

I have done a lot of night riding both road group rides, mountain biking
including 24 hour races and commuting. My first light - a Night Sun Team -
back in the early 90s was such a revelation. We lived in the Puget Sound
area and the winter days are so short. Being able to ride at night was life
changing. Since them I’ve gone through multiple iterations of most all the
major manufactures lights and ever improving batteries.

I have been skeptical about claims that the beam pattern of dynamo lights
make them more effective. No more. The IQ-X is dramatically more effective
than my brightest 1000 lumen light, partly because it doesn’t scatter light
in my eyes, killing my night vision. I used to run a main light on the bike
and a helmet light to be able to see to the sides. I don’t feel the need to
as I no longer feel trapped in a light tunnel.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dealing with verbal harrassment on the road

2019-04-23 Thread John McBurney
One of the guys who used to work on my bikes was a bike mechanic in
Charleston had a customer who was an instructor in the Marine Recon School,
a small part of the Corps similar to the Navy Seals. A passionate cyclist,
he routinely carried a Glock even on the bike.

He was riding down a two lane road toward a bridge when a pickup carrying 3
good ol boys sped by and someone threw a beer at him. The marine flipped
them off and they pulled over, each coming toward him with a baseball bat.

It’s not a fair fight even if the marine is unarmed but..,

He backed them down at gunpoint, forced them to throw their bats in the
river and told them he didn’t ever want to see them on the road again.

Re: [RBW] Hand-Cranked Coffee Grinder Recommendation

2019-04-21 Thread John McBurney
We have a Kyocera coffee grinder and it is a typically perfect Japanese
product from a company founded on making high tech high quality ceramics
which is what the grinding wheels are made of. It’s slow (think Kevin
Kostner In Dances With Wolves) but never heats up the grind, and is almost
infinitely adjustable from coarse to espresso. It’s small and lightweight
enough to pack in a pannier, too. Ours has gotten us through several power
outages.

Much cheaper on Amazon.

I’ll check but I’m pretty sure. The side pockets are big. What size tube?

Re: [RBW] Re: 650B wheels?

2019-04-10 Thread John McBurney
I think that the rim is the issue. Then disc or rim. I had a set of 700 c
disc wheels Built up with Velocity NoBS 32 spoke rims. No pretty but very
strong and cost effective. Atlas without eyelets and polishing.

I spec’d Sapim Strong spokes. Sapim uses the same steel for Strong which is
as I understand it single butted and heavier gushiest as in C X-ray whole
DT Swiss uses less strong steel for their higher gauge Spokes. Also specd
brass nipples.

Although really expensive, HED Belgium might be an option for an ultimate
wheel set. Gran Bois are on sale at Compass. Might be a good option if
fiberless isn’t important. Sure are pretty.

When I rebuild my current 650b wheels I will probably spec Pacenti and
Sapim Strong spokes with brass nippples.

Re: [RBW] Re: Friction vs Indexed

2019-04-10 Thread John McBurney
I think both have their place. The analogy I used is digital versus
analogue audio. I love my turn table and records but by golly I love the
precision and convenience of my digital setup too.

I originally got into friction way back in the 60s then rediscovered it
more recently when I got fed up with different standards for 9 speed 10
speed road, mountain shimano SRAM etc etc etc.

I run the Bombadil 9 speed indexed with DA barcons on Thumbies in index
mode because I Ride it off road some and quick shifting is essential.

On the road there is usually time to reach for the downtube shifter and
fine tune the shift.

Re: [RBW] Dynamo Lights

2019-03-31 Thread John McBurney
I somewhat misadvisably decided to open the light to see whether it even
was an LED or incandescent. It has a single LED. The lens is truly
impressive but devishly difficult to get back in with the correct
orientation. Right now it’s together but the lens is vertical. I think it
projected down and was effective enough before I flipped it upside down.
That was partly aesthetic and partly because at the end of a big old Nitto
Campee rack it was getting the crap beat of it and I had to retap the
housing to m4 to keep it on the mount. Flipped it was doomed with the first
rain but a little out of harms way.

I remain impressed - awed- by the depth of knowledge in this group. 
Namaste.

Re: [RBW] To Helmet or not

2019-03-29 Thread John McBurney
Now the other question...which helmet?

I owe my life to a MSR mountain climbing helmet. I was a strong 16 year
old junior in 1970 when I rolled my tubular at 30 mph. My riding partner,
my grandfather, and I were among the few who wore helmets back then. The
MSR used a nylon web and deformable rings and I pushed the webbing to the
shell when I landed. The outer was deeply gouged right on the top .

I’ve crashed several times since. Been hit by a truck. But this was the big
one.

I recently bought on of the new Bontrager waveflow helmets. I can’t PROVE
it’s better than a styrofoam helmet... but I’m hedging my bets. As a
knowledge worker I don’t have a choice.

Re: [RBW] Acorn Bags for sale

2019-03-26 Thread John McBurney
I have these exact bags in black and this is a great deal. Acorn bags are
hard to get, made only in small batches by a home based business. They are
beautifully well made. The fabric Martexin Wax is a little coarser than
Sackville Sack waxed cotton but is made in USA by a family owned business
in operation nearly 200 years. The leather is absolutely beautiful.

Re: [RBW] Friction down tube shifters

2019-03-25 Thread John McBurney
The Suntour Superbe Pro’s are excellent if you can find a pair...If they
pull enough cable.

I have been told that 9 speed is finicky about ghost shifting when going
friction. Certainly I’ve have had just the experience you describe with my
pre-Silver Riv DT shifters (don’t know how The compare to silver) so I
“downgraded “ to 8 speed when I replaced my cassette and chain Saturday.
Haven’t had a ghost shift so far.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell tinkering..

2019-03-21 Thread John McBurney
I’ve read Japanese Steel and found it fascinating since it covers the time
back in the mid-60’s and early 70’s when I was coming up and the European
bikes - Raleigh, Botetechia etc were aspiratational and Japanese bikes were
what I, as a high school student, could afford. I may have lusted after a
Raleigh International but a Miyata Pro was more realistic - and probably a
better bike.

Now I have a variety of bikes and love each and every one. But on my
Bombadil with its beautiful lugs and Joe Bell paint job, I truly love the
quality and aesthetics of high end Japanese components - Sun XCD, Nitto,
Honjo. Panaracer (Compass). OMG what wonderful tires!

I might llike it as much much with value based components but probably
wouldn’t love it nearly as much. And to me loving it is what it’s all about
to me.
To me that is what makes it a Rivendell.

Re: [RBW] Re: Question on matching rim - tire width

2019-03-20 Thread John McBurney
The velocity nobs rim is really good. Not pretty but sturdy, functional
wide and NO BS.

Re: [RBW] Re: Midweight Hoody Recommendation

2019-03-19 Thread John McBurney
Although not a hoody, I have found Portland Cycleware long sleeve merino
wool jerseys to be incredibly useful as a daily rider and bike commuter.
They are heavy weight wool. Don’t cause me to itch at all. Look good on the
bike or for a beer afterward. Sooo comfortable warm but never hot.
