If all you care about are the decals then you are probably SOL.

Will a bike with the same design as the Legolas but with a RIVENDELL on the
downtube ride the same as one with a LEGOLAS?

I’m assuming yes.

and the longer you wait the less chance there will be a company to order from.
If every person on this list who said “all I want is a X” decided to buy a
pre-designed model at the cost it takes to build them then things might be very
different.

Want a 750-1150$ bike? Find a time machine, buy a Crust or a MIT Riv.

Beyond bone damage the reason most folks end up needing arch support and the

[RBW] What’s your winter (re)build?

2019-03-13 Thread Justin August
As we emerge from “Winter” here in the Bay Area I got to take my Saluki out
yesterday (as posted in the post yr Riv thread). I thought it would be
interesting to see how folks have decided to change their builds over the
winter as often happens.

Salukid: my upright but not uptight kid hauler.
Something I LOVE about this frame as a kid hauler is the ability to mount from
behind the saddle due to the combination of low bottom bracket and slacker seat
tube angle.
Build list:
Widest Bosco Bars (58cm?) + 12cm Nitto Stem + Ergon Grips
Thule Kid seat
Paul Levers + Brakes + Moon Units
Microshift shifter (10 sp indexed) + XT Derailleur on a road link shifting
11-40 cassette
Shimano Crank with 34t + S⁄lver chainguard + VO Sabot pedals
GOLD CHAIN
Trusty Brooks B17 select + Nitto 83 + Paul Blue Balls just for fun
Widefoot liter cage + voile strap + King Kage Iris. “Free to me” SIP water
bottle + Radavist bottle
Oldie but goodies Shimano LX Hubs to Synergy Rims + Paul Rasta Skewers + WTB
Byways
Bruce Gordon Rear Rack + Rawland Demi-porteur front rack
Carradice Bag with random straps + Safety Pizza + Donut Sacks DONUT KILL ME
strap
Rose gold bell because my daughter loves to ring it while we ride!

[RBW] Balance Bikes for Bouncing Babies

2019-03-10 Thread Justin August
Hey folks-
I want to look at a balance bike for my daughter. Lots of choices out there and
want to get one that can grow with her for a reasonably long amount of time.
It’d be nice to be able to have the same bike transition with her to be able to
ride a bit on the dirt since we have great flat-ish areas in the dirt to
practice here.

Any thoughts on brands or models?
How old were they and how long had your kid been walking before going to a
balance bike?
Any tips?

Where does this leave Cinelli Pope handlebars?
What about the later copies with revisions? Are they Episcopal bars?
Are Jones bars more aptly named Mormon bars for their quintessentially American
origin?
Are track drops on a Pistachio Buddhist bars? Or would that be chopped off
drops into bullhorns - ridding yourself of all that is not necessary and
embracing suffering?

So many deep questions.

2018-02-02 Thread Justin August
I skapprove if Bill’s armchair lawyer assessment and of his lawyer friend’s
assessment. My car once got a sticker and boot on it because it was parked
across the street from my apartment for over 72 hours. That neighbor was a
particularly picky person who felt they “owned” the space and used the letter
of the law to violate the spirit of it by reporting a car “left in a single
location for longer than 72 hours.”

There are many ways to address the issue of a bike you think may have been left
that happen before you cut someone’s lock, many of which have been outlined
here.

Re: [RBW] Re: Lovely Bicycle

2018-01-05 Thread Justin August
Agreed.
My brother died suddenly six years ago. I had some people respond similarly to
Christopher when I wasn’t able to complete some reviews on the website I wrote
for at the time. They subsequently were reprimanded by their bosses and
blackballed by some news sites for their behavior (not at my request). Not a
pretty situation but insensitivity and entitlement is pretty ugly.

Rule one of life: don’t be a jerk. If someone else tells you that you came off
like a jerk then own that you caused someone else to feel that way, self
examine and move on. No one is saying you are an across the board horrid human.
You messed up. You own. You make amends. You move on.

Easy.

Re: [RBW] Re: Discs versus calipers

2017-12-27 Thread Justin August
Love my disc brakes. Low level Deore Shimano hydros. I’ve never done anything
to them except change the pads - they came on the bike and I’ve swapped bars
and wheelsizes and forks an never had an issue. Definitely the best brakes for
any sort of “terrain” riding. I’m very happy the hydros came with the bike.
Otherwise I’d have gone down the rabbit hole of mechanicals and finding “the
best” ones. These are great and while I might choose Klampers on a more road or
touring focused bike I’m not there yet.

The MAPs are different from the Jitensha. They have more rise and a longer grip
area. Plus you can get them in a much wider width (that I have not tried). And
they are rated OK for MTB use and do not have a sleeved grip area.

While I tend to advocate for not buying new things, making what you have work,
etc…
You could also:
Sell everything.
Buy a new 650b Atlantis
2 wheel sets:
1) 36hole Atlas Rims with 650b x 2.1 tires
2) 32hole Pacenti brevet rims with 650b x 42/48 tires (Compass EL)

Then you get a new bike, new wheels and the versatility that you desire.

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale

To be fair: this price is not really rare or exclusive. If you check EBay
you'll see that everyone who isn't a small online bike shop is selling them for
below $50.

However, when Riv has stock I shop from them if the price differential is less
than 20% or so. But when it's literally 70% off? I don't know.

[RBW] OMG! Egg misguidance from Rivendell

2017-02-04 Thread Justin August
I learned how to do perfect hard cooked eggs and have never looked back.
Boil water.
Put eggs in steamer basket (not in the water) and steam with lid on for 12
minutes. You can leave out or refrigerate immediately it's up to you.

The way to get the shells to peel off best is by using eggs that are older. The
pH changes and that is the major issue in shells adhering to the egg.

Soft cooking would probably just mean changing the time to something lower like
7 minutes of steaming.

[RBW] Re: S24o Kit Evaluation

2017-01-31 Thread Justin August
I am thankful to be part of a group who knows how to critique without being
critical!

Changes I have to make:
- Hammock is out (park regulations)
- Sleeping pad + Bivvy are ready

Changes I will make:
- Cut cookware in half (leaving the Fosters keg, keeping the GSI soloist)
- Drop water bottles. 1 bike, 1 nalgene?
- cut down on the clothes. I hate being cold. But I can manage a Marin night on
less I guess. SWRVE modal short sleeve, IBEX spoke jersey, one extra layer and
my Nanopuff. I really hate being cold. I do like dry socks so I'm bringing an
extra pair for camp and night wear.

Comments
- Someone asked about the rating on the sleeping bag going down so low. It's
what I bought about 17 years ago when I was going to college. My mom thought I
might need it. Which is weird given how much I paid for room and board.
- I'm nursing a strain in my upper back/arm from weight lifting. I can't ride
without some crazy pain up there! I'm hoping it works itself out by Saturday or
you'll find me in my east oakland Backyard camping instead.

Thanks much for the feedback.

Anyone in the Bay Area want to plan any other short Friday or Saturday night
overnights with this newb?

[RBW] S24o Kit Evaluation

2017-01-30 Thread Justin August
Doing the s24o thing this year. I'm wondering about my kit and what I'm missing
or taking extra.

- Grand Trunk Ultralight Hammock
- Marmot Sawtooth (good to 15F)
- Caldera Cone with Fosters Keg
- GSI Soloist
- Helix Dripper
- Cheap camp mug
- Kleen Kanteen hot thermos
- KK Insulated Cold (on the bike)
- Water Bottle Squeezable
- Nalgene 32oz
- Ibex Woolies 2 3/4 tights & 1 long johns
- Darn tough socks for camp
- 2-3 upper layers (wool, polartec)
- Patagonia Nanopuff jacket
- Wool beanie
- Birkenstock clogs for camp
- Various on bike top layers

My questions are:
Will I freeze without a thermarest or similar pad in my hammock?
Rain fly?
I'm thinking of bring ramen, salami, cheese, baguette and bars/peanut butter.

I have it all except food crammed into my Carradice & Fromt Basket. I have a
Tubus Tara and Ortliebs to use if need be.

Any advice for a first timer?

I work hard to eat less sugar. I started cutting back in my coffee by swapping
to just half n half then swapped to black with cinnamon and now have moved to
just black coffee but I try to get lighter, more floral and fruity tasting
natural or washed coffees. Every once in a while I'll whip up some half n half
in my Neopresso frother with honey to make a honey latte. When you cut back on
anything - sugar, salt, fat, meat, veggies, fruit, spices - your tastes adjust
to your new normal.

I also bought a half dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts with my wife yesterday. Love

The free valet parking at my BART (Fruitvale Station) is excellent.
The BikeLink lockers at West oakland are well used and I've not heard (cue
report of) of a daytime work hours theft.
There is ample before the payment turnstile parking at most. There is sparse
after the turnstile parking at some.

I've only used the valet parking - excellent as I said - and have a BikeLink
card that I'm too scared to test using my Saluki or wife's Betty.

I often put my Saluki in my wife's trunk, carpool from East Oakland (Maxwell
Park) to San Francisco (Western Addition) and then ride home at night to BART
in SF and then ride the 7-20 miles home depending on route and preference. So
that's my "BART Bike."

Re: [RBW] Re: Cantilever brake question...

2016-08-26 Thread Justin August
I think, to be fair, "Shimano levers" was in reference to modern STI brifters.
Maybe not but I'd assume so given the long history of success of the brake-only
levers and cantis from Rivendell and others.

[RBW] Re: SUNRACE One-At-a-Time shifter maintenance?

2016-08-05 Thread Justin August
I have SunRace actual indexed barcons that I'm not too fond of. I think I'm
going to widening my handlebars and in that process will probably spring for
new barcons made by Shimano.
