[RBW] Appaloosa vs road bike - (pointless) 19 mile commute time comparison

2018-11-16 Thread Michael Flournoy
Absolutely not scientific but I have recently had the occasion to ride the
exact same 6 mile trip twice a day 3 days in a row on 3 Very different bikes. A
Brompton, a 1952 Raleigh 3 speed, and a ‘75 Motobecane Grand Record. No
speedometer, but rode equally comfortably brisk, what felt like the same
effort. . ( one day was windy ). It felt like there was a huge time difference
that just wasn’t there. All trips were within a 2 minute window. Apparently
once you have a nice round tire full of air you are 98% there.

[RBW] VO Randonneur Front Rack on Sam Hillborne

2016-10-23 Thread Michael Flournoy
Has anyone tried using this? This is for a Hillborne with caliper brake. I
want to mount it using the mid-fork braze-ons but the VeloOrange site says
the braze-ons should be 3.75" below the fork crown. I measure 5" on my
bike. Is this a no-go or can it be tweaked to work?

[RBW] Re: Experience with mini "half clips" ?

2016-05-21 Thread Michael Flournoy
I have used regular half-clips and the "Deep" half-clip from VO. I much
prefer the deep ones. I wear a size 9 shoe so it's not to accommodate a
large foot just a better position over the pedal. Also I can wear shoes or
most hiking boots once I bent the toe part up a little. Mostly I like to
have some movement on the pedal but still good fore-aft positioning and no
concern of slipping off the pedal. Also it's the easiest in and out at
stoplights short of a flat pedal. I use them with MKS Sylvan touring
pedals- cheap but still classy :- }

A few years ago NAHBS was in Richmond where I live and on a lark and
knowing nothing about Hand Built Bikes I went. In the middle of all these

the guy standing there " whats up with that? ". And as if he'd never heard
the question before, he very patiently explained that he wanted to show off
what they were good for and that they " at least in in his opinion " looked
best with a little mud honestly earned caked on them. He explained what
cyclocross was and that you didn't really need a special bike to do it but
if you could afford it, what the heck why not? A very laid back and genuine

I'm a conflicted luddite. Why can't we embrace the advancements without
throwing away the stuff we figured out a long time ago. Of course part of
the problem is the advancements are coming from young people who weren't
around a long time ago. Hands were designed for knobs and twisting 1/2
turns clockwise/anti-clockwise, fingers were designed to push buttons (
actual, tactile buttons, with travel and feedback ), tires should contain
lots of air. My 25 year old son has never seen these things and so he
doesn't understand my ranting. I use an iPhone because it has an Awesome
camera built in and I can text with a full keyboard. I hate it because it
doesn't really have a keyboard at all and simple things require taking my
gloves off/moving into the shade/taking my eyes off the road, etc. I am
drawn to Rivendell because they see this.

2014-11-29 Thread Michael Flournoy
Trouser Clips. Also known as Quilters Clips or Bicycle Clips. This is the
simple metal spring steel band that keeps your pants out of the chainwheel.
It works beautifully. Sewing supply stores don't carry them anymore, LBS
looks at you like your stupid and wants to sell you a velcro strap that's
fiddly and doesn't stay in place. It's a silly simple thing that's become
hard to find. ( yes, you can find them but it's not easy and you have know
what your looking for ). They could just import simple, cheap ones or make
up some fancy, prettified ones. Either way they are simple, useful, and
would sell.

1 inexpensive and 1 mid point pricing models that all have mixed reviews,
and 3 very expensive ones with seemingly no reviews I have found.

So it would be cool if RBW came out with their own decaleur to offer. The

[RBW] Riv for the wife

2014-11-04 Thread Michael Flournoy
Sorry for the rambling post but...
My wife is bike dreaming.
We have always had His and Hers bicycles since we were dating 38 years
ago. Motobecane Nomade and Mirage Mixte, Trek 820's guys frame and a girls
frame, Bianchi Hybrid's guys and girls, etc. They don't have to match
exactly but simply be a pair that belong together. A year ago I bought
myself a Sam Hillborne ( blue, web special ) which I am happy with. BUT,
for the first time, we don't match.
So...The problem is the Betty Foy has been discontinued and the Cheviot
colors are a turn off. She just doesn't want Orange and the Green looks
like puke to both of us. Many years ago a friend of mine said never buy a
car or a bike or a house, no matter how good the deal if you don't like the
color, because every time you look at it, that will be your first thought
and you'll never be happy. I think he was right. It seems silly on the
surface, but these are things that you may be using and looking at every
day for decades. We still own the Motobecanes - 38 years and still in use.
:- )
We have talked about buying a Cheviot and having it painted to better
suit. $$$ is an issue on an already expensive bike, plus I worry about the
durability. On cars, at least, the factory paint is always much tougher,
I've had terrible experience with repaints.
Is there any credible rumor of other colors coming down the pipeline (
since they just got the green I doubt it )?
We live in Virginia, so we can't just go take a look, maybe the Orange is
nicer in person? So my other thought is to buy the frame only and check it
out. Maybe we'll like it after all or if not have someone within driving
distance do a repaint and build it up myself.
2 questions. Who is recommended in our area. And what is the experience
with powdercoating? I understand it to be a really tough, durable finish
but can it be done to look nice also?

behind me, though, even if I have to lean out of the way. Where DO you
 mount the blasted thing, anyway?

That mirror, though. I shake my fist at it daily...

/
It's a love/hate thing for sure. On a Sam with Albas I tried several
different positions and now have settled on using the brake lever snout
just behind the cable adjuster, that moves it out enough to (mostly) not be
looking at my elbow. But what I don't like is the convex which makes
everything too small and hard to judge distance. For years I have used a
Mirrycle
MTB mirror which has a beautiful round flat glass mirror, clear - large
field of view- and rugged. But it is a bar end mount and the Sam has bar
end shifters.
So far the German mirror is the best I've found but like you I stay
frustrated.

[RBW] Re: Tire Width and Performance from SCHWALBE

2014-01-08 Thread Michael Flournoy

The way I wrapped my head around it is that 3 ( at least ) different
phenomena are involved; tire internal friction, tire contact patch (
external friction ), and vibration damping of the entire assembly ( Tires,
Bike, Human). At very low pressure tire internal friction is high and tire
contact patch is large but vibration is absorbed at the tire ( and not
transmitted up into the assembly). Within moderate pressure there are sweet
spots where the balance optimizes for low rolling resistance and low levels
of vibration passing up into the assembly ( fast and comfortable ) . At
high moderate no one is happy ( tire is still flexing, contact patch is
still relatively large, and a lot of the vibration is passing up to be
damped by the human in the assembly). At very high pressure internal
friction is very low ( no flex in the tire ), external friction is very low
( contact patch has become tiny ), and vibration is transmitted almost
directly into the assembly. The balance is out of whack but favors low
rolling resistance.

What Jan has found is that with good tire design and half an eye on the
pressures we can enjoy a large sweet spot where a low work load, a
comfortable chair AND high productivity reside.

[RBW] Re: 56 cm Sam Hillborne or wait for the 58 cm?

2013-08-15 Thread Michael Flournoy
I just bought one of the web specials. My PBH is 87.5 and I'm 5'10.5,
the fit is basically good, the top tube is plenty long ( with Alba's s),
the stand over is fine. My issues are that I want the seat further back
than I can get it and if I don't use toe clips I get a lot of toe overlap (
size 9 shoe ). It may be that I am an anomoly with an unusually long femur
but I look OK to me : ). I tried and cannot use a Brooks - it won't go back
far enough, I'm sitting right on the rivets, a Terry Fly is working for now
but only without toe clips. The larger frame would maybe resolve this but I
worry it would make the top tube too long, it seems pretty long now. I may
try one of the setback seatposts from Velo Orange if I miss my toe clips
too much.
Don't get me wrong, I love the way the bike rides and in fact don't think
the larger frame is the answer. If it were a custom frame I would keep
everything the same but spec the seat post a little slacker. Also the color
is really subdued, more greyish than blueish, so not very flashy, but still
a pretty bike that rides great and the double top tube has quickly grown on
me.

[RBW] Re: Alba bar-reach

2013-07-20 Thread Michael Flournoy
If you are comfortable on the saddle leave it like it is. It looks like you
have the stem pretty high already, if sitting straight upright is what
works best for you, and it very well may be, then you will need a shorter
stem or different bars.
However, before you do any of that play around with handlebar height and
angle, it might surprise you. I would angle the bars down slightly so your
wrists are more natural and drop the stem a little. This will make you lean
forward a little. Your mind may want to be bolt upright while your body
actually wants to lean forward. The beauty of the quill stem is it is easy
and costs nothing to find out.
