If he gets anywhere near the recommended pressure, the bulge from his weight pushes the tire into the brake caliper. But clearly this frame was built as a road racer and not a touring frame. They all use to laugh at me as you could actually see a size difference - my tires were noticeably fatter. Now, things have changed, most have given up 20s and many have gone to 25s. My advantage is pretty much gone. Maybe its time to try 28swhich basically isn't going to happen as my carbon fork won't allow anything fatter than 25s...Good Luck! That is what I think the issue is... long legs and short torso. If you use the PBH measurement only you can end up too stretched out if you are built like that. The bars are rotated up as well to shorten reach. The shorter stem would help but it doesn't make it a touring bike. another option... keep it set up for road... and find a 80's used touring bike like a Miyata 1000. It's a beautiful bike, but it looks like it does not fit properly and doesn't fit your needs. The seat is slid forward, the stem is raised up high and short. I tried those knee savers once to try to fix an ITB issue... they made it too wide. I'm happiest with a Q around 170 mm so triple cranks just feel right. But that wasn't what was causing my ITB issue I found out. I went to a Chiropractor (a long time ago) who specialized in cyclists when I was having ITB issues. He said I was sitting to far forward and my hip angle was not right. So now all my bikes now have 72d seat tubes and 25-30 mm setback seat posts to get the right hip angle that eliminates the ITB problem. For some reason this combo is just great. I never used the 22 granny on the 650B bike yet, but with full panniers or on a super steep dirt road climb I'm sure it will be useful. You factor in your body weight, what you want to carry and pick the bike that meets those needs. Diameter and wall thickness still matter... it's the other stuff that is less important. Although heat treating is important on thin tubes... on the rest it is inconsequential. As most metallurgist's will tell you it's usually joints and manufacturing flaws that fail, not the parent material if it is designed correctly. ~mike Carlsbad Ca. [RBW] Re: New budget Riv in Summer 2013?
Doug, I've ridden the BB7 road cable disc and a bunch of hydraulics in my time. For technical downhill rides on a suspended bike the hydraulics are worth every penny. I would never ever build a rigid bike with cable discs as they don't offer any real advantage and many disadvantages. ( weight/complexity). Grant knows his niche, and it's not disc brakes. It's steel, nice lugs, fat tires, cool paint jobs and a threaded headset. I would expect him to follow that guideline. Most of us in this group are here exactly because of those attributes. ~mike Carlsbad Ca. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. It's been awhile since I've posted to the list. I recently decided to sell my Atlantis frame and fork, and I replaced it with a Long Haul Trucker. I had an experience when I was building up the LHT tonight that I wanted to share, because I know this list includes a lot of steadfast cantilever devotees. After I got the fenders, wheels, bar and stem installed; I went to install my Paul Touring Canti brakes. These are among the best and easiest-to-install cantilevers that I've ever used. Still there was considerable fiddling about getting them set up. I installed the levers and went to wire up the brakes when I realized I didn't have a font cable hanger for a 9/8 steerer tube. Ugh! Figured I'd have to pick one up sometime this week. It then occurred to me that I had a perfectly good set of linear pulls along with a set of long-pull, Dia-Compe aero levers stashed away somewhere. If I use those, I don't need a hanger at all. This is a Surly not a Rivendell so I shouldn't be subject to too much ridicule for using linear pulls. So I somewhat reluctantly removed the Pauls and dug out the linear pulls (Avid Magnesium Single Digits) and long-pull levers. I was in the process of installing the front V-brake when I realized I was done! I literally laughed aloud! It's been a long time since I've used linear pulls and I forgot how easy they are to set up. I installed the lever and cable and did a spin-and-grab test and the brake felt solid with good power on the first try with no messing around. Now I remember why I felt like it was weird going back to (what I considered to be) archaic cantilevers when I got into the Rivendell world. I didn't see a single picture of a Riv with linear pulls when I bought the Atlantis, so I figured, when in Rome Anyway I've got a set of silver Paul Touring Cantis that I'm going to list for sale once I take a few pictures. Complete with straddle cables, mounting hardware, and I think some spare o-rings. Although, I recommend that you don't buy them and that you get yourself a snappy set of linear pulls! Re: [RBW] Re: 650b Atlantis?
raising the bottom bracket a cm or so does not create much of a problem in my opinion. The braking situation is another matter, if you can't get good leverage with the brake set up you choose then I would not do it. Plenty of MTB bikes have been converted with many happy conclusions. Using a larger wheel helps with with rolling momentum and works better off pavement in my book. And you get to use a hetre...easy decision! ~mike On Wednesday, July 11, 2012 5:18:54 AM UTC-7, stevef wrote: Honestly, I don't get conversions like this. Canti posts add complication to any conversion so that's one issue. Also, the original intent of 650b conversions of road bikes was to add fat tire and fender versatility to an otherwise limited 700c-equipped bike, ie a low clearance, high BB racy/crit bike--trying to add versatility to a bike as versatile as the Atlantis seems an exercise in futility. And messing about with something so perfectly suited to its intent and function, and designed by GP to boot seems almost sacrilege. There are plenty of bikes out there that can be improved by a conversion like this, but the Atlantis doesn't seem like one of them to me. When I first entered Forest Park and ended up taking Fire Rd 1 which I had never ridden before. It's quite steep in parts and so I just dismounted and just walked a few sections which was fine. I was on my Hilsen and one area where it doesn't do so great is steep scrabbly climbs. I guess I could have muscled up the climb but that just didn't seem fun. I exited Forest Park and headed up to Skyline on the pavement and took that for a little ways before dropping back down into Forest Park via Saltzman and made my way down to Hwy 30 and across the St Johns Bridge and back home, stopping for tacos and ice cream along the way. It was just a really great ride. I was on my Hilsen with platform pedals and wearing some Musa shorts and an LL Bean seersucker/hiking shirt I recently purchased on sale. The shirt worked well except for on descents where it tends to flap in the wind a bit too much for my taste. I guess I could tuck it in and the problem would be solved. After spending so much time focused on randonneuring for the past couple of months it was really nice to just get out for a ramble. I'll do some variation on the ride tomorrow and the next day. kinda curious about how it will ride with the taller BB height? The Hetres are great tires and on a 56 frame they look really good. [RBW] Re: Low Trail Fork Experiment ... FYI only - Not intended to start another debate...
finally came out of the closet.. eh Doug. My personal experience is that without the front load the Riv is more stable and funner to ride. Adding a medium weight upfront/above wheel load changes the equation. ~mike On Tuesday, June 5, 2012 3:41:20 PM UTC-7, dougP wrote: Rene: You are indeed brave to post about your experiment, and I hope everyone else reviews it thoughtfully. Something we all need to keep in mind is that as brilliant a designer as Grant is, every bike is the sum of a large number of compromises. The fewer the compromises, the more specialized and hence less versatile a bike is. For me, one of the major attractions of Rivendell is the versatility of my Atlantis. There just isn't any ride I would hesitate to do because my bike can't do that. This confidence building versatility has also led me to a lot of why not? adventures in loading, and I'm probably not alone here. It would be impossible to design a single bike that would be equally competent handling all the possible combinations of front, rear, high, low loading. Rivendell, IMHO, does it better than most, probably because they actually think about it, load their bikes go banging about the hills in the real world. I took delivery of my Atlantis in early 03, and it's my go-to bike for everything. Over the years, I came to prefer having my basic, daily stuff in a front bag, first a Riv Hobo, then an Acorn Boxy Rando (holds more). It seemed that with the front bag fairly well stuffed, the bike had a bit of a wander when climbing at low speed, nothing as you describe but an irritating tendency to want to go somewhere else. I always dismissed it as the load and my inattentiveness. Stumbling into some low trail discussion or article, it seemed like maybe there was room for improvement, at least to my tastes. When touring with a load, the bike was a bit dodgy with everything on the rear, the problem being an infrequent but unpredictable shimmy. Spreading the weight around among 4 bags restored stability. Since my lodging load is 2 bags, on-tour ezperiments with them front vs rear showed front to be a more stable location. However, the previously mentioned wandering was more annoying with all the weight up front. Tom Matchak also came to my attention courtesy another list member, and built the same fork for me. Since my issue was not as dramatic as yours, I was only hoping to get the same stability with a front load that the bike had with no load. The result meets expectations. The 40 mm trail is not a relgious experience but a rather subtle change that solved my personal problem without disturbing anything else about the bike. Note that I did not leap into this without a good deal of second guessing and self-argument. The Atlantis is a great bike and I did not want to screw it up. Fortunately, the results justified the deliberations. It would not surprise me if another Riv owner rode my bike hated it. It just works for my my quirky habits. Side bar re: shimmy. If you get shimmy, don't assume the 40 mm trail is the cure. On a recent S24O (2 bagger) I rode with the bags in front on the way out and the rear on the return. On a straight, level, smooth bike trail at perhaps 12 mph, I got a nasty shimmy when I had to stop quickly, with the load in the rear. After that, all the way home, I tried to induce it again with no success. The typical tail wag when standing is still there. I've been experimenting with trying to move the load lower as far forward as practical. I may need a change of rack (currently using the Nitto Big Back rack) to get things where I want them. Funny that you want to paint both bikes. I really like the gray kidney bean red Hunq paint scheme, and have considered doing that on my Atlantis. It's spent enough time traveling that I'm thinking new paint for it's 10th birthday would be nice. Of course, my wife tells me it's you; sorta old beat-up looking. I think there's a complement in there but I could be just wishing. dougP On Jun 5, 1:37 pm, René Sterental orthie...@gmail.com wrote: Disclaimer: This is a very long post and I want to start by stating that I don't mean to start another heated debate on high vs. low trail fork, or Jan vs. Grant philosophies, etc. I just want to describe this experiment and its initial results to the group so anyone thinking along the same lines has another point of reference. I'll gladly answer any questions that are posted, either privately or publicly but let's handle it as the controversial topic it usually is. Also worth noting is that this is a modification I chose to do on my own to my bikes and while Rivendell certainly supports the exchange of information and knowledge about bikes, they certainly stand proudly by their bikes and their design philosophy. In preparation for the upcoming Cascade 1200k I've been trying to get in a few more longer rides than just a basic Super Randonneur series (200k, 300k, 400k and 600k brevets). Today my friend Ed and I headed out to do the Portland-Ripplebrook-Portland which goes from Portland out to Ripplebrook Guard (Ranger?) Station in the Mt Hood National Forest along the Clackamas River. The weather was amazing and the route, by and larger really nice and most of the time on quiet back roads. There is also a long stretch on the Springwater Corridor bike path from Portland to Boring. I had really been hoping to do this ride in 9 to 10hrs but that wasn't to be. A couple of rather long stops and Ed's bout of vertigo slowed us down quite a bit. In fact, this was my slowest 200k ever 12hrs, 15min. I did the Bingenfest faster in platform pedals a few years ago and that has way more climbing. The Cascade is in late June so I'm hoping to be ready for it. This has been an odd year for me with randonneuring in that all of my times have been slower than in years past. Also, I won't get to do the 400k because I was unable to get coverage for work that weekend in spite of requesting the time off back on Feb 10th (WTF?) Fortunately I will make it up to WA for the SIR 600k on the Olympic peninsula the first weekend in June. I've never been up there and am looking forward to it. Hopefully things will come together and I'll have a strong ride which I think will help put me in a better headspace for the Cascade. My rando bike is bottom bracketless right now so Homer stepped up for randonneuring duties. It performed quite well and I just really love that bike. [RBW] Re: New Portland bike shop
I would agree that San Diego has a large cycling community, but my rough estimate is that 80% are wearing team kits and ridding CF bikes, at least in North County. I'm sure in the city there are more commuters/urban riders. It's certainly many times greater than in the LA 'burbs where I (and Velo Cult's owner Sky) came from. Where I live in north San Diego County the City of Carlsbad has done a fabulous job with bike lanes and cyclist friendly traffic lights. Lots of Nitto, Brooks, Velo-Orange, and On One (who also just moved to Portland). New bikes appear to be Surly, Raleigh, and All City cycles. The main attraction, though, is the space. Appears designed more as a shrine to the classic mountain and road bikes owner Sky Boyer has on display, including an original Steve Potts, early Bontrager cross bike, a beautiful Follis tandem, and lots of stuff I'm forgetting. The place is seems designed more to hang out and talk bikes than to sell you something - though there's plenty to buy. Surprisingly, Portland doesn't really have a shop like this - most of our shops seem either race obsessed, fixie focused, or a hodge-podge of everything on 2 wheels. I think they will do well here. And there's microbrews on tap. Coffee and food coming soon, I hear.
There also many multi-user dirt bike trails that cover the hills. With the proximity to the ocean it's certainly an idealistic place for a cyclist to live. ~mike On Sunday, March 25, 2012 9:15:47 AM UTC-7, velomann wrote: I attended the grand opening of Velo Cult here in Portland last night. Micro-brews on tap? never had that down here, although Station Tavern next door is the best. I miss them even though I just moved to San Diego permanently. I had been there many times. I'm sure they will do well there, I believe there is a larger population of the cyclist they best serve. ~mike Carlsbad Ca. [RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis
On my tandem, I'm using a older (M952) XTR long cage derailleur and XTR 12-32 cassette. shifts like a dream. ~mike On Saturday, March 24, 2012 6:43:33 AM UTC-7, Patrick in VT wrote: On Mar 24, 8:34 am, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery thill@gmail.com wrote: We did a 10--8 Shimergo conversion recently. Maybe I missed some subtle nuance to making it work flawlessly, but in my experience it only kinda works. Probably voids any warranty. What kind of cassette/derailer, Jim? Just curious. I have the best results with a short-cage (Ultegra), currently shifting a 12-30t on a single ring set-up. I also get really smooth precise shifting with a medium cage XTR rapid-rise (which I actually like for the ergo levers - lets me shift to higher gears from the drops, and sweep up to lower gears with a single big push of the thumb). anyway, just wondering if longer cages are more finicky for shimergo. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis
the Campy ergoshifters are much nicer than shimaNos. Many drop bar mountain bikers ( and me on my tandem) use 10 speed Campy ergo levers with an 8 speed shimaNo rear derailleur and cassette... shifts like they were made for each other. ~mike On Wednesday, March 21, 2012 2:25:06 PM UTC-7, sanjoser wrote: hello everyone I've had a mix of components on my atlantis for it's life, these 10 years or so. different shifters, hubs, gears, drivetrain, etc. I've got the urge to do an upgrade, and I'd really like to go campy. I've been advised that my chris king hubs are fine, so long as they get serviced every six months, so I guess I'll keep those, but everything else is up for change. This is my goto bike for commuting and tours. I guess I don't have to explain that to this group. Re: [RBW] Re: 650b and the MTB crowd.
whatt? you getting kickbacks? Most shops can't afford to keep vintage stuff in their cupboards. I buy basic things,, cables, chains, tubes but anything Riv-like comes from the Internet. Although now that I live in Carlsbad, their is a shop in Oceanside... Pacific Coast Cycles that is the closest to anything Riv-like that I've found. ~mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: V-brake vs canti question
Doug, While my opinion is that the right cantilever brakes ( Avid or Paul ) stop just as well I would just caution that the Travel Agents have a reputation for cable failure becasue of the tighter bend. Since it's your wifes bike and she is a lighter weight person and probably won't be carrying huge loads it's probably not an issue. Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Hub Conundrum: Chris King vs. White Industries vs. Hope
The 756 model has cro-mo axles, the later models switched to aluminum axles to save weight. Due to the lower mechanical properties of aluminum they had to make the axle larger in diameter which resulted in making the ball bearings smaller to fit inside the hub body. Now whether this decreases the life of the bearings I have not seen any data that reflects that, but in general larger ball bearing are a good thing. ~mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
