[RBW] Re: 1x11 Clem Smith Jr build by Analog: lots of pics and nerd details

2018-04-17 Thread Nancy Seibel
Joe, you're right, I am loving this bike. It's early days yet but Ithe
first 30-40 miles I spent on it have been a delight.

Some of you might remember my query a month or so about Clems. It lead to a
long thread of comments. That was great - it gave me a lot to think about.
Then came James and Candice's offer of a reduced price full build on
existing frames -- and now I'm the happy owner of Clem Jr (which would be a
Clem L now).

James and I had a thorough conversation prior to finalizing the components.
Candice did a fantastic job on the build. The components James points out
in his blog post? Each one of them is great. I'm looking forward to more
miles together this weekend, when we head out for the Cycle NC Coastal
Ride.

Good points, Tom and true, I have found among different bikes I own/have
owned, minimal differences in my speed, though noticeable differences in
what I can lift and maneuver readily when that has to be done. I too would
say failings in regards to riding are generally my own, not the bike's! :).

2018-02-11 Thread Nancy Seibel
It always is helpful to me to weigh my own experience against others' with
a decision like this one. Sometimes going with "you already love it" lands
me in the position of buying something I thought would be great...only to
realize it didn't live up to expectations! So I'm hoping to moderate that
love with well rounded input from the group. I'm getting that, and very
appreciative of it! Thanks!

Get it! Versatile, light, holds a lot, easy to get in & out of basket. In a

haven't been carrying stuff in it that would be damaged by rain, but if I

Right turn onto Sykesville Rd. (Rt. 32)
 Left onto West Friendship
 tunr into:
 1s Ave/Main Street Sykesville.
Just keep going straight and it turns into Spout Hill Rd. with the big
 climb that ends at
 Right turn onto 3rd Ave
Right turn onto Springfield (watch your speed as this downhill ends
 abruptly at T intersection)
Left onto Main, and back out to West Friendship and go back home the same
 way.

If you want to ride it and want company let me know and I will happily
join. It is a fun, but hilly ride.
Shoulders on 99 and Sykesville Rd, are wide and nice. Bethany Lane doesn't
have much shoulders, but it is short and gets you to 99 quickly.
If you want less miles, you could always park at Centennial Lake in
Ellicott City and ride Centennial lane up to Bethany Lane and go from there.

Here it is but without the right turn onto 3rd Ave and Springfield.

layer, mock turtleneck, winter gloves, hood, helmet...felt great. Someone
here told me to try not wearing a shell in the cold to prevent sweating and
just layer up. It works!! I have been riding in just layers of any material
and it seems to work good. Somehow I find that cotton long johns keep me
 warmer than wool baselayers.
Ellicott City to Sykesville and back.
Rolling hills pretty much whole way. Like a roller coaster through small
farms and also farmland that have new developments built on them.
Tough riding (to me) but good and fun training for rolling terrain
rides. The route I took had great shoulders. The roads looked like ribbons
that stretched out ahead of you rising up and down and up and down off in
the distance. Cloudy and dim afternoon light.
Sykesville was cool to see. Its an old Main Street type town with old
stone structures and a railroad depot and shoppes. I wanted to take a pic
of the life sized bicycle planter I have seen there on the sidewalk before,
but it wasn't there today. Maybe the shoppe was closed today. Apologies for
my lame description of Sykesville. I don't know much about it. Probably
others here are familiar. And they can tell you that:
Spout Hill Rd. in Sykesville has a 3 or 4 tiered hill section that is very
steep and tough. But ends in a nice sweeping and relaxing 3rd avenue and
Springfield Rd downhills that circle around back to Main Street.
The way back home from Sykesville felt much easier for some reason. I
started really enjoying the ride when I got to Sykesville and stopped
worrying about my slow speed. Earlier on, I was getting discouraged at my
slowness and difficulty riding all those hills. Of course, losing 10 lbs.
 would help. Ha ha!
I thank God that my legs are not hurting anymore. Everything felt great
on the Sam today. I am so thankful that I am ok and didn't hurt myself on
my last ride I reported where I had some serious leg pain during the ride.
Here is a shot of the back of the depot...

[RBW] Re: Faster Fat Tires

2013-08-29 Thread Nancy Seibel
Love my Grand Bois 650's. Comfortable, fast, no flats as yet on them or on
the more used (so far) 26 Compass' on my touring bike. If you go with the
Soma Xpress please let us know how you like them.

So Rivendell gave me Conti Tour tires on my new Sam. While they are OK
they definitely are sluggish compared to other tires I have used. I would
like to stay with a fatter tire on this bike but would like something a
little swifter. It doesn't really need to be road racer fast or anything
but something designed to be a little faster would be nice. My restrictions
are that I need a 650B tire and I would prefer to get ones that are all
black. I am flexible with the second one. Are Pari Motos my main choice?
Are they strong enough for occasional rail to trail use? If possible I
would like to stay that wide or wider. Any suggestions?

[RBW] Re: My miniature AHH

2013-08-26 Thread Nancy Seibel
Diane I'm a member of the Vertically Challenged Cyclists Club too, so I know
the challenges of small frames and the thrill of finding a good fit. The AHH is
a beauty.
Cecily, any comments on Soma Xpress' puncture resistance and on how long
they're expected to last?

Hi Chris - if your friend still needs albatross bars I have them! She could

[RBW] FS: Sackville Small Trunksack, Large Trunksacks, Toursack

2013-05-06 Thread Nancy Seibel
These terrific bags are looking for a new home. Bought them in 2009. They
are olive waxed canvas. The Trunksacks have the normal fading that comes
with use along with some curling of the leather flaps. They're in great
shape, with all fasteners and zippers intact. The panniers have seen less
use and are in nearly-new condition, with a spare set of attachment cords.
You can buy the bags together or separately; I prefer to sell all 3
together. Price includes shipping.

Small Trunksack - 56.00
Large Trunksack- 60.00
Toursack - $160
