[RBW] Re: Plus Tires for GBW

2019-05-08 Thread Pondero
Patrick, I'll admit that they wear pretty fast, but mine were replaced with
some texture remaining after a year, and much more than 500 miles. I'll admit,
however, that my tires usually last longer because I am relatively light
weight. Tread wear is a consideration with this tire, but the ride quality
makes up for it in my case.

[RBW] Re: Albatross bars for a Moustache antagonist

2019-03-18 Thread Pondero
I have had excellent results with the albatross bar. I use the ergon grips
for more upright crusing, and the most forward part of the curve (with
cloth tape) for climbing, wind, or faster moments. I'm using downtube
shifters to maximize the hand positions between the bar end and the forward
curves. The smoother the brake level clamps, the better. I can ride these
bars all day.

[RBW] 47-50 mm 650B street tires. Which have you tried and liked? Tried and Disliked?

2018-09-23 Thread Pondero
I'm currently enjoying the Compass Switchback Hill. I use them on paved and
unpaved county roads. They are light, smooth, and have minimal rolling
resistance. I have used the EL version on our gravel roads with great success.
They are expensive, but are basically the best tires I have ever used for my
application. Fortunately, I'm a small fellow and I tend to get a reasonable
amount of miles out of them before they must be replaced.

[RBW] Sackville BagBoy

2018-08-30 Thread Pondero
One of the reasons, I like Sackville bags is the shape. The materials and
details are excellent, and they help make the bags enjoyable to use. But
the shape seems to work well for me in terms of "packability". In other
words, it seems like some bags (frame bags for example) that have lots of
cubic inches just can't hold some things. But that new BagBoy, with its
boxy shape look like it could hold all kinds of things. For me, that makes
it look like it packs bigger than in is. Kinda like a ShopSack. I'm
seriously considering the BagBoy.

[RBW] Re: Full brimmed hat recommendations

2018-08-21 Thread Pondero
I like my Tilley, and use it frequently. But, as Craig said, it can be hot
in some conditions. I also use a straw cowboy hat for better ventilation
and a wider brim. The brim on mine is stiff enough for my needs. I use a
stampede strap to help keep it on during zippier descents.

Andy,

Thanks for the reminder about mounting on the dowel. I've heard about this
approach before (maybe from you?), and have thought of doing this myself.
Would you mind, if it isn't too far off topic, posting a photo of how you
oriented the mounting?

[RBW] The "One Bike" for a featherweight?

2018-07-11 Thread Pondero
Sean, this is exactly my dilemma. I have learned that enjoy standard diameter
thin wall tubed framesets because they have more of a springy, energetic feel.
Others might have different preferences. For example, even with a full touring
load, my Hilsen was more fun (for me) to ride than my Atlantis. If you prefer
that rock solid feel over what some might call noodly, you might choose the
Atlantis or Hunq over the Hilsen.

I eventually purchased an Ocean Air Cycles with standard diameter 8/5/8 tubing,
have loaded it up with touring gear, and it is even better (for me). My weight
is around 130-135. Sometimes I don't think average or larger folk uunderstand
how important that difference is to us small guys. But there are wonderfully
lively framesets available.

[RBW] Re: Coffee Making Question

2018-05-30 Thread Pondero

>

I like variety. So I rotate among 4 options; Soto Helix pour-over cone,
AeroPress, Bialetti Moka Express, and GSI Mini Espresso maker. When
bikepacking and trying to minimize my kit, the Soto Helix usually is my
choice. If I had to pick one tool for all my life applications, it would
be the AeroPress.

Sometimes I bring pre-ground coffee, but I have a Porlex hand grinder that
I bring along is weight/space is not a concern (often for me).

I use a simple Trangia alcohol stove for my heat source.

Most of my rides include a coffee stop somewhere. So I'm one of those with
a particular interest in this bicycle/coffee overlap.

Enjoy...

[RBW] Re: Hammock camping?

2018-05-30 Thread Pondero
I use a Hennessy Hammock, and it is designed for a lie that is bit flatter
because it is angled relative to the line between the end supports. I find
that it mitigates the issue that Bill mentioned satisfactorily for me.
Another trick is to put a spare shirt under your knees. Others have
already mentioned the main basic element is to insulate underneath. For
me, discovering the hammock completely changed my camping perspective.
Beforehand, I'd always wake up sore, stiff, and couldn't wait for enough
light to get off the ground. Now, I wake up comfortable, rested, and
relaxed. I take in my surroundings, and take my time getting up. I camp
more because I sleep MUCH better.

Best wishes...

[RBW] Help me remove my Ergon grip

2018-05-29 Thread Pondero
So I snugged the small hex screw (that holds the grip to the bar) down nice

remove my Ergon grips to install some new brake levers. But the screws
don't move. So far I've sprayed the screw with WD40 I had handy. My hex

I appreciate the FS posts because I've benefited greatly mostly as a buyer,

Because I value this ability to trade goods here, I try to be above average

If the group believes it helpful, I'll try to post more ride reports and be

[RBW] Re: My trials and tribulations with upright bars

2018-01-22 Thread Pondero
Dave,

I'm an albatross fan, but it took me awhile to find my sweet spot. I'll
mention it here because seems a little different than what works for many
of the folks who have commented.

Instead of higher bars and a longer stem, I found that using the same stem
I used for my drop bars works for me. However, I put the grips at saddle
level. When I sit on the saddle, and extend my hands with a slight elbow
bend, the grips are exactly where my hands are. The other key comfort move
was the addition of Ergon grips. They seem to be just right for taking the
bar axis out of the nerve in my palm, and spreading any pressure across my
entire hand. Bar and grip angle help dial this in. This formula provides
ideal balance of my weight between saddle and bars. During easy/moderate
effort I have minimal weight on my hands on the grips. During
moderate/harder efforts I counter balance the increased weight on my hands
on the forward curves with greater pedal pressure. I know this wouldn't
work for everyone, but it is delightful for my situation.

Best wishes with your experimentation. I hope you find the right
bar/position for you.

If you could find creative financing (other things to sell besides a Sam?),

Your single bike approach, if it comes down to that, sounds fine. The only
other idea I have is a few strategic WTB/WTT posts. You've got time and this

[RBW] Does anybody ride 75+ km with non-drop-bar handlebars?

2017-06-02 Thread Pondero
As you can tell from the responses, the answer to your question is "most
definitely" some of us use non-drop bars for 75km+ rides. I've done it myself
many times with albatross bars, including several multi-day tours. As others
have said, it takes some experimentation to dial-in the fit. My personal key
to success was using ergon grips, and finding the right balance in the fore/aft
position of the bar so that the bar ends and forward curves are equally
comfortable. I put cloth tape on the front curves and use that position often.
You might prefer a different bar, but I am optimistic that you could find
something to counter the problem you described from having more hand pressure
with less pedal force (which was exactly my problem).

Drew said..."Oh man. You have a rambler and an adventure bike? Why would anyone
need another bike?"

To answer his question, and sort of aim back at the original one bike idea, let
me say that I don't need another bike...but I also have a Quickbeam. Any one
of my bikes could be a "one bike" for me (not that I am seeking that
currently). I enjoy each of them that much. So my advice on the downsizing
thing is to keep one that speaks to your soul, and accessorize to broaden the
experience. Keep the stoke alive until it comes time to n + 1.

Re: [RBW] Re: On downsizing (and the 1 bike, and 650b)

2017-05-30 Thread Pondero
Justin asked..."Which Bantam built machine would you choose? Rambler or
Adventure bike?"

Fortunately, my Rambler is pre-Bantam, so I think that means I am exempt
from answering such as ridiculously difficult question, right? Besides,
this thread is for Drew's dilemma. It is much easier to coach than to do.

Go, Drew!

2017-05-30 Thread Pondero
I also like Justin's extra wheelset idea. Brilliant! The Hunq is
versatile, so why not take full advantage of it? Sure, it is easier to
grab a different bike for a purpose, but changing out wheels is a
relatively simple task. I'm convinced I could (if forced) to get down to a
single bike, but I'd probably beg for at least one extra wheelset.

[RBW] Wanted: Front Bag

2017-02-20 Thread Pondero
Eric, I've got an old black Berthoud in that size. But it is a fixer-upper,
and I just never get around to repairs. The "hook" for the elastic closure for
the lid needs to be replaced. It has some beausage, but I think a crafty
person could get it back in productive use. You might be thinking of something
fancier for a new bike, but thought I'd mention it just in case it strikes a
chord. Of course it would be priced much lower than the new ones.

[RBW] Re: S24o Kit Evaluation

2017-01-31 Thread Pondero
Justin,

Your list looks a lot like mine, and my trips usually work out pretty well.
I'll echo what the other guys have already said. You might want all the
clothes if you anticipate a big temperature change. Sometimes I roll out
with a short sleeve t-shirt, but haul long woolies, etc. for the chill of a
long winter night. But if no big temperature swings are anticipated, you
can almost take no extra clothes. Regarding the hammock insulation, I'm a
Texas guys and don't tolerate cold well. So I take my thermorest pad when
night temperatures are expected below 70. I find that it works well for me
down to the low 30s if I add some additional insultation protection at my
shoulders and upper arms.

Sometimes I go fairly simple/minimalist with my food, and other times I'll
haul some extra items and savor the cooking experience.

Have a great time!
