Re: [RBW] Re: What's your biggest tire on AH Hilsen?

2022-06-16 Thread Sean Cleary
Thank you Patrick (!) as a big concern is exceeding my Velocity Dyad
25-38mm limits with proposed 43-45mm tire. Don't want that
wallowing-off-the-rim feel I sometimes get on my very low pressure mountain
bike tires. But your experience is vey enlightening. Velocity told me
to NOT attempt to make rims tubeless either but fascinated with you,
effectively, throwing that caution into the wind as well! After all, didn't
tubless-ness originate on non-tubeless rims??

[RBW] What's your biggest tire on AH Hilsen?

2022-06-15 Thread Sean Cleary
Since its arrival in 2011, my Hilsen has had s many personalities in
the way of bars, stems, saddles, shifters, racks and tires. Oh, and
bags...lots and lots of bags! Great to have bikes with such flexibility...

Latest idea is to make it more rail trail-specific, requiring the largest
tire I can fit. *What's the largest tire you've enjoyed using and what rim
(width) are you running?*

How many are using brakes other than Tektro?

Hey gang, what 700C tires above 40mm have you had success with on previous
generation (2013) A. Homer Hilsen? Confusing what exactly fits per
Rivbike. Have really enjoyed GravelKing Slick Plus 35mm on smooth gravel

Atlantis to the rescue, huh Michael? I believe that's what I'll do but need
to wait 'til September when frames arrive, ugh. Grandy and Doug, thanks SO
much for the feedback. I was heavily considering a Jones SWT but respect

[RBW] Re: Replace my Atlantis ?

2020-12-16 Thread Sean Cleary
Hey Doug (and others who know new model)- do you recall approximately what
size tire was on the new Atlantis you rode that rode so well? I'm looking
to create a 700 x 2.3" bike with a Jones H bar. Anyone else have experience
on big tire Rivs? The new Clems and Gus Boots just don't appeal to me. Wish
there were still Bombadils and Hunquapillar (sp?) to choose from.

Background: a long time Homer Hilsen owner which has been an excellent jack
of all trades but a master of none. I find it too jarring on some pavement
surface despite large tires. Esthetically, Atlantis has always been my
favorite Rivendell. I realize a Jones bar is a weird element on a Riv but
it's become my favorite bar as I grow older...and older.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for GPS computers?

2017-08-24 Thread Sean Cleary
I always liked traditional wired or wireless computers because they rarely
died and provided all I really need to know; distance, time of day, average
speed and the all important odometer.

HOWEVER, I regularly ride 4 bikes and one tandem, some with alternating
sets of tires that all require unique calibration settings.

After 20 years of endless calibration each time I changed tires or the
batteries died, I had it and bought a Garmin Edge 200. It's no longer made
but similar models are a relatively affordable way to tally mileage from
multiple bikes without fuss. When I mountain bike, I occasionally scrap a
day's log because the tree canopy interrupts the GPS signal but other than
that, for 4 years, it's been an otherwise champion of reliability for the
price paid.

I personally can't stomach anything much above a hundred dollars for
computing a bike ride. But I understand the desire for cutting edge
technology including Wahoo models that display texts. Once a year that
would be helpful... : )

Thanks Steve. I checked and verify that my handlebars fit 26.0 stem clamps.

I just came across these 1.25 inch quill stems used for these handlebars.
NOTE: these will NOT fit Rivendell's 1 inch headset.
• Santana OEM 1.25 in. quill stem, 110mm length. Steel.
• Kalloy 1.25 in. quill stem, 125mm length. Aluminum.
• Stoker stem, 120mm length. Aluminum.
• Stoker stem, 105mm length. Steel.

$20 shipped for one; $10 extra per additional item.

All items listed on this post are still for sale.

2016-04-09 Thread Sean Cleary
Addittional items for sale:

(1) Pletscher two-leg silver kickstand: $30 shipped or $20 shipped with
bags listed. Length from bike plate to ground is roughly 11-1/2 in. I cut
about 1-1/2 inches off the stock to fit my 61cm Homer Hilsen. Your mileage
may vary...

(2) Nitto Santana-branded drop handlebars: $40 shipped for one. $60 shipped
for both. Fits traditional size road stem clamps which I believe are 26.0.
44cm width center to center. They're 23 years old and one has a lot of
scratches under the tape area from twisting brakes on and off.

[RBW] Re: FS: Loyal Designs Randonneur bag, Nigel Smythe bag, Nitto Mark’s Rack

2016-04-08 Thread Sean Cleary
In answer to more questions: Loyal Design bags have bottom strap holders
that completely secure it to a front rack so a decaleur isn't necessary.
Mine also has a beefy leather strap that snugs tight to a Nitto Mark's rack
tombstone–the vertical end loop.

All items still available.

[RBW] Re: suggestions for a bike computer?

2014-09-17 Thread Sean Cleary
+1 for Garmin 200. It's amazing how well it works in all conditions. I used
it all last year including fat bike riding in temps ranging between zero
and 20 degrees. No problems.

I primarily bought it to eliminate having to recalibrate computer every
time I switched tires. Plus, I ride 6 bikes when including our tandem and
use only one Garmin. Used to use 2 Sigma computers, which I think are the
best, when I only had 4 bikes. Problem was, I often brought the wrong
computer when driving to my location, d-oh! Also, between the 2 computers I
could never remember when I last changed batteries so at least once a year
the computer would die on a ride.

The Garmin has built-in, USB or AC plug rechargeable battery and the
coolest computer map recall feature that I could ever want. I love looking
at new routes that I've ridden using Garmin Connect. It's a data lover's
dream but that's not a plus for me. Just the reliability.

I'm much more willing to replace my front wheel vs. the rear in the event
someone has cable cutters, so this is how I lock my Hilsen for longer stops:

Read the Sheldon Brown link for an optimal minimalist approach.

An additional bonus of riding a Rivendell is that, in my experience, most
people view the bike as being really old and likely, less valuable. Your
mileage may vary, however.

[RBW] Re: New Kryptonite Bike Lock Idea

2014-09-16 Thread Sean Cleary
Wow, where do you live where there is such prominent bike theft, Andrew?
The rare clues of bike theft that I've seen in our Minneapolis suburbs are
orphan front wheels locked to a bike rack. Apparently the owners didn't
understand the meaning of quick release skewers!

On Tuesday, September 16, 2014 8:46:56 AM UTC-5, Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
wrote:

If I have to choose (usually I don't) I'll protect the front first for two

 1. I usually run a dynohub, so that wheel is expensive to replace

 2. I anticipate that the casual thief (my nemesis) will eschew getting
him- or herself greasy. Rear wheels are generally harder and messier to
remove. I have only ever lost one wheel, and that was a front; I have seen
a number of bikes missing a wheel, and it has always been the front.

However, since i use my bike for transportation, I prefer to protect
*both* wheels, since it's a very long walk home.

Andrew, what a fantastic article you've written! You'd appreciate that I'm
currently testing load capacities with an old camera bag strapped to my front
rack. It actually looks better than some bike bags.

While on the topic of non-300 dollar bags, look at what this company packs into
a $105 front bag: http://www.ironweedbp.com/orpington-front-bag.html. Unlike
you, I'm sucker for canvas, particularly the old Acorn bag, non-waxed canvas.
If I fancied cordua, one of those corn-fed Ironweed bags would be hard to pass
up.

Happy riding, friend.

[RBW] WTB: Berthoud front bag

2014-08-23 Thread Sean Cleary
After recent rides with 5+ lbs on front rack, I'm convinced my Hilsen carries a

I'll buy straight up or trade my new-ish tan, Medium Sackville Saddlebag
towards purchase.

Re: [RBW] Saddlebags vs Revelate bags

2013-11-03 Thread Sean Cleary
Revelate and Rivendell are two ENTIRELY different schools of thought, each
having their own merits. I own three Revelate bags and sold a fourth (frame
bag): Viscacha (awful name), Gas Tank and Mountain feed bag. All three get
swapped back and forth between my mountain bike, fat (snow) bike and gravel
bike (Fargo), non of which have a rack. Pros: lightweight; needs no rack; fast
and easy to swap between bikes; affordable. Cons: Viscacha is kinda ugly, if
that matters.

I also own a Hilsen (for sale!) with Rivendell's medium saddlesack. Like the
Viscacha, the medium saddlesack swallows everything that I throw into it with
room for more. Big Riv saddlesacks weigh considerably more and require a rack
if you can't stand the constant thigh rubbing like me. They are beautiful
though and that can trump other factors for most. Pros: classic beauty; highest
durability (?); best resale value. Cons: Expensive; magnet for astute thieves;
can't be placed on and off quickly for frequent store visits, if that matters.

[RBW] Re: A Riv-ish Mapping GPS...?

2013-08-31 Thread Sean Cleary
I'm really glad you posted information about this new unit Tony. This past
year, I've heavily debated whether or not to get the Garmin Edge 200 to
replace the 2 low cost Sigma computers that I juggle between four bikes. One of
the Sigmas that I use is near 10 years and simply wont die to merit
replacement. The other one his wireless and randomly decides not to compute on
some days like today, ironically.

What most appeals to me about GPS units is not being limited to just two bikes,
nor having to recalibrate for every tire switch which i do every season. I'll
probably pass on the touring model until I've gotten lost enough times to
justify the map feature; the extra $130 over the Edge 200 will buy a lot of
paper maps!

I didn't want to buy a tube of $10 adhesive just to secure a $20ish grip so I

[RBW] FS: Grip Kings, MUSA Large pants, Power Grips pedal straps

2013-08-08 Thread Sean Cleary
Items are all in excellent, hardly used condition:

Grip Kings have pedal spikes installed (easily removed) and a few extra holes
for more. Grip is vastly improved, in fact, I removed half the spikes that I
originally installed, they work so well. $40.

Large butternut color pants have zipper pulls removed, they were too noisy.
Zipper works fine without. $50.

Power Grip pedal straps work extremely well and tan looks great on cream accent
Rivendell bikes. Argyle pattern shown is only on one side-I used the plain side
with no graphics.

All items include shipping to lower 48 states.

Re: [RBW] Re: 29er tires for a Hunqapillar

2013-07-04 Thread Sean Cleary
Speaking of Fargo, my stock bike came with 29er 2.2 inch Continental Race
Kings, which I toured for a week on carrying 40lbs of camping equipment. We
traveled on dirt, gravel and pavement through northern woods of WI and MI and
tires were great; no issues. Admittedly, I returned home and purchased 2.15
inch Big Apples because most of my riding back home is on pavement or rails to
trails. They're fantastic for that. The Contis don't have much of a traditional
nobby pattern but I took them on an 10 mile, aggressive singletrack ride once
and never washed out or wanted more grip.

MTB brake levers (silver) and grips? Riv has the bar, so levers and grips
alone might be good. I have two Santana/Nitto-labeled drop bars that I can
swap, if that's of interest to someone.

I reside in Eden Prairie, MN 55344.

 Thanks, Sean

I want to offer a bit of detail about what this year's country bike rally
 participants can expect.

We will be following the general course, if not the exact route, of the
Almanzo 100, over two days of riding. Almanzo cue sheets, last I checked,
were available for download. The Almanzo course is mostly gravel, which can
be highly variable between smooth and pavement-like to gnarly loose gravel
with potholes. The terrain is quite hilly by Midwestern standards, but
splitting the route into 2 days and taking a leisurely pace should make it
less of an ordeal. Weather, as always, will be a factor. It's certain that
bikes will get dirty, and possible that rocks will chip the paint. That's
 life.

We will ride as a group and regroup as needed when we get separated by
hills or whatever. That said, this is a ride at your own risk situation.
Any participant is free to opt out for any reason, but there is no
support car to pick you up if that happens. Hopefully we can support each
other and all have a good ride without incident. But stuff happens, and
every rider should accept the inherent risks and have some kind of backup
 plan.

We will pass through a couple small towns where we may be able to eat in
cafes and get groceries. But for the most part, plan to have the day's
 food/water on the bike.

 Any other questions?

[RBW] Re: Dates to put on the calendar

2013-02-13 Thread Sean Cleary
Having gone on both of these rides last year, or, *part* of the Riv Ride
anyway, I can attest to the great routes Jim comes up with and am looking
forward to riding the Midwest Rally again this year. The Northern Wisconsin
trip is currently a hopeful maybe. But no matter what the route, the bikes,
the weather, there's one thing for certain: The Will Be Bacon.

Last year's Midwest Rivendell Rally was a lot of fun, but fewer than half

This year, I'm calling it a Midwest Country Bike Rally, and it will be
June 1-2 in Spring Valley, MN, which is home of the Almanzo 100 gravel
grinder, and IMO in the vicinity of the best country bike riding in
Minnesota. All country bikes and their riders are welcome. I'll be doing
the commute to and from Spring Valley using Amtrak the day before and the
day after, for any Twin Cities folk who want to extend the weekend with me.

 Second:
I'd like to do a reprise of this trip:
 http://hiawathacyclery.blogspot.com/2012/10/fall-northwoods-trip.html
Dates and other details are tentative, but I'm looking at Sept 22-28,
approximately. Most likely, we'll base the trip from a lakeside cabin in
Northern Wisconsin, a 4hr drive from the Twin Cities.

Re: [RBW] Modifying Thin Gripster Pedals

2013-01-16 Thread Sean Cleary
Mike, I concur with your Grip King comments, having repacked the same pedal
twice in one season-cmon! I've gone 10 years without doing such maintenance on
old Shimano pedals. However, being the owner of some VP Gripster pedals, I can
say that your plan will likely fall short because of the pesky axle ridge, or
hump, in the pedal platform which won't allow for good grip. It's only
tolerable WITH the pins since they prevent your foot from hitting the axle hump.

If you do buy them, I suggest just remove a few of the pins, actually Allen set
screws, to see if they really do tear up your shoes that much and I suspect
they won't. I don't find the screws all that grippy in actuality. I just really
don't care for the pedal, it's too thin, doesn't have good platform size or
ergonomics. I feel there are much better options.

Good luck,
Sean
