[RBW] Re: New shoes (and rims) for the Sam Hillborne

2018-06-21 Thread comveo
Hey Tony,

There is a way to get some non-polished silver action on just about any
Velocity rim, but you'll have to ask them. As a shop owner, I've asked to
have rims left with their "mill finish" which, while not true ano, has a
very classy look in it's own right. I have some raw Atlas rims on my
Appaloosa and boy are they purdy. Timing is everything with this option
however, as they have to deliberately set them aside before finishing as
usual.

Hope this helps! Ain't bikes fun? : )

[RBW] FS: 2015 Hunqapillar F/F/HS 62cm

2017-10-26 Thread comveo
Hey all,

Looking to find a new home for my 62cm Hunq frameset. Including installed
FSA Duron headset. I've taken really good care of this one, and only a
small handful of blemishes are evident. All are relatively tiny. I'd give a
solid 8.5 out of 10 with regard to overall condition.

This was purchased in later 2014 and received in 2015 and I'm the sole
owner. Keep in mind that this is the more recent, shorter chainstay spec.

I'm asking $1,500 shipped , in a professionally packed bike box.

Take advantage of this one and avoid a longer Waterford lead time.

Please PM me with any questions you might have otherwise.

Thank you,

-Bryan

[RBW] Re: 1x Friction Shifting Rivs - whachu got?

2017-09-22 Thread comveo
1x9 on my Appaloosa includes long cage XT Shadow RD, XT 11-36 cassette with
sugino xd600 crankarms and 34t 100bcd single speed(no ramps) chainring. I
believe the BB is a Sugino 68x 107, which get the chainline/center of
cassette close to perfect. No retention devices used. Had the same setup on
my Hunqapillar. Never any issue with dropped chains. I do like to keep
chain as short as possible. Long cage RD is certainly not required by any
means. I'd go short cage if I had one!

I'm a bit late to respond- my apologies!

Hey Ant,

When you say Nitto "Hi-Riser" do you mean the Dirt Drop Style, regular
Technomic as seem on Rivs site, or the reeeally tall Technomic(280mm)?

THIS: https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-dirt-drop-26-0-8cm-or-10cm

OR...

THIS: http://store.somafab.com/nite28eloqus1.html

I have the super tall one in 70mm reach with a 25.4 clamp and would trade
for your King 2Nut, if it's what your heart desires : )

Hey Daniel,

If it helps out, I just measure my (green, current model) 62cm
Hunqapillar's effective TT and I'm getting 64.5cm, which agrees with Garth
via Keven @ Rivendell. I measure this in the same way Bill L. had detailed.

Of course, Riv it up to confirm!

[RBW] Re: Anyone order a Joe?

2015-10-31 Thread comveo
Hey Patrick,

I'll chime in since I first had a 58cm Hunqapillar, then sized up to a 62.
I too am on the line between sizes. You're looking at a slightly smaller
jump from 55cm to 58cm with the Appaloosa. In my case the smaller size
required just too much post and stem protrusion to be practical for the
mostly upright riding I'm doing. Now, since the frame comes up to "meet me"
more on the larger bike, I feel like I have much more flexibility with bar
choice and height, minus maybe drop bars..haven't tried them, just
Bullmoose flat MTB and Albatross. With the Choco-Moose on the Joe, bigger
should not be a problem. And if you ride with normal shoes, you'll likely
have about an inch between the bike and your body(mid-top tube) with the
largest tires possible on the Joe. If you plan on having every bar choice
out there and don't mind a bit of post, stick with the 55cm, though for the
bars the bike comes with the larger may indeed feel more "horse"-like.I'm
glad I went bigger after being able to try both Hunqs. Food for thought and
I'd love to hear your feedback either way when yours arrives. Psyched on
this bike! : )

[RBW] Re: Axle positioning in horizontal dropouts affecting shifting? *Photo included*

2015-10-11 Thread comveo
Thanks everyone. Lots of good reading there Andy. I think I'll throw a
smaller tire on there first followed by a new short cage derailleur. I have
a pretty intense suspicion that the upper pulley vs. hanger relationship is
critical in this experiment. I'll keep noodling and let you know the
results.

Thanks again!

[RBW] FS: USA built/designed 58cm Hunqapillar Frame (Green) F/F/HS

2015-02-06 Thread comveo
Hey all,

I'm looking to sell my 58cm Green MUSA Rivendell Hunqapillar frame/fork/FSA
headset, and thought I'd post here before it goes up on E-Bay.

Here's a bit of info:

The frame is about 5 months old and does have a few 1-2mm nicks in the
paint in about 3 places -mainly a top tube cable guide/seatstay rack boss
and typical paint marring on the braze-on faces and dropouts from rack
mounting wheel installation. Otherwise it was babied and has worn fenders
most of it's short life.

I likely won't be able to disassemble the bike to the bare frame for a few
days, but pictures could follow if you'd like.

I'm asking $1700 shipped/insured, which I'd calculate based on where you'd
like it sent via UPS. Feel free to send me your zip code and I can get you
a quote.

PayPal is always preferred, if you don't mind.

I'll be packing it exactly as does Rivendell, using their materials to
ensure weight savings and stability.

Pictures of the initial build are
here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/125432464@N02/

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to answer any questions.

Thanks all,

-Bryan

I'm 98% sure that those are 2.35 Big Apples. Just seems too fat to be 2.0
on those rims.

I have a newer green hunq and have had 2.25 Schwalbe Nobby Nics on the
bike with healthy room to spare.

Now don't quote me on this as I haven't yet tried it, but *visually* it
looks as though a 2.5 tire will fitMaybe I'm wacky!? Or hopeful, or
both...

I've been meaning to try something that wide.

I'll try to measure in the next day or so to give a more definitive answer.

Just the thought of that clearance on a lugged BB shell 29er frame conjures
warm fuzzies... : )

standard baptism: brutal fenderless solo sunrise mud quest through Forest

 stem tires.

The 50mm Schwalbe Duremes that came on the Hunq are wonderful tires they
are most appreciated additions via their new path in life on the Atlantis.
So no surprise here, right? I wanna go bigger on the Hunqapillar. I
threw on the biggest I had laying around, some 29 x 2.1 Kenda Small Block
8's. My caliper says 54mm at the widest knob diameter. (I was able to
safely squeeze these onto my Atlantis, for the record.) There's some room
to go bigger, of course and here's where you all can steer me in the right
direction... Gobs of clearance when it comes to the fork and chainstays,
but looking at the seat stays it seems like a 60mm/2.35 would be pushing
 it.

I'm on the verge of buying the first set of For-The-Hunq tires and I'd
very much appreciate the Good Word of thee Group. I'm looking at some
Panaracer 2.2's but would love to max this baby out! Can i go bigger?
What's the word? Do you Bombadil riders get more clearance or no?

From the design perspective: Probably ain't so easy to make much more
clearance in the seat stay zone without doing something funky (ie bowed
Atlantis chainstays), but my function/design question is this: why mega
wide clearances at the fork chainstays if the seat stay clearance is the
ceiling at a mere (sarcasm) 59.5ishmm?

Also- if anyone recalls the initial FS posting and thread for this bike, (
 --- HERE
 https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/waterford$20hunq/rbw-owners-bunch/vjPEda_VHYo/KREpRtBXre8J
) there was a mention by the now-previous owner of larger tire
 clearance edition
which roused some questions in the group to little avail. Were early
batches of Hunq's maxing out at a more narrow tire? It's no big deal but I
admit I am a little confused by this claim. Any and all info greatly
appreciated. OK. Enough. I'm gonna go ride now, I swear.

[RBW] Re: Bar Ends vs Paul Thumbies? Anyone tried both?

2015-01-31 Thread comveo
Hey John,

My girlfriend has swept bar specific Ergons on Albatross bars and was
ecstatic with the switch. We rotated the inside of the grips upwards a
little so her wrists don't kink, and the angle from her hand to forearm is
more gradual.

I'll echo the others accounts of bar ends being a bit vulnerable. Always
getting bonked on something, it seems. But they are my favorite overall, I
think.

I have 9sp Shimano bar ends paired with thumbies on my Hunq's bullmoose bar
and they're totally out of the way of getting mangled, and feel awesome.

However, I'll be swapping to an Alba on the Hunq soon, and think I'll try
out the inverted Vince/Keven style thumbie setup as they're also tucked
away nicely. Friction shifting should be fun again after 5 years or so of
indexed only.

I think the Ergon/Thumbies setup could feel really solid with the grips
larger, flatter platform. Moreso than Ergons with bar ends, as the Ergons
bumped out shape might feel funny to slide your hand backwards/forward
again to get to/from the shifter.

Good luck with your tinkering, Hope you find a comfy solution to your nerve
issues.

the Ergon's but not like the Thumbies?

Any opinions, feedback suggestions would be helpful.

[RBW] Re: Question on Big Ben handling

2015-01-25 Thread comveo
Hey there,

Just thought I'd share. I have 26 x 2.15 BB's on a pair of Velocity
NoBS(same outer width as Atlas @ 25.4mm) rims on an old rigid Hardrock, and
700 x 2.15 BB's on Velocity Cliffhangers(~28mm wide) on my Hunqapillar. I
really like these tires.

Although not exactly the same rim setup as yours, mine being wider, I have
noticed some tire squirm on both bikes in even moderate speed turns when
the pressure drops below about psi 35psi front/rear.

I'm about 185lb.

It's a bit more pronounced on the Hunqapillar than the 26 bike, I feel.
And that's with one of the widest rim-brake compatible rims still left on
the market(Cliffhanger)

I only really feel the squirm on pavement, but it's there for sure. Maybe
since the Hunq is so stiff, it stands out more? Like a shovel stuck in a
bucket of Jello..(that's an extreme exaggeration) Could just be dreaming...

On dirt though, it doesn't really bother me at all somehow.

Does anyone notice or have any input on handling with a Big Ben or balloon

Reason I ask is, I just bought some Big Bens (26 x 2.15) for my
Hunqapillar for mixed ride use. Took them out for a first ride a few weeks
ago, had a bad crash while on a somewhat but not terribly fast descent on
pavement, turning into a curve, though I'm 95% sure it was due to a way
under inflated tire (I had a flat about 20 minutes before that on the
trails and replaced tube but feel I did not inflate enough for the ride
 home).

Today, went out with properly-ish inflated tires (34 front, 40 psi rear),
but still felt like the bike was squirrely on turns and it felt like the
bike was going to slide out underneath me on some moderate turns, so I took
them pretty slow. But, it was also my first ride back since the crash, so
maybe that had something else to do with it. Anyone else have any comments
on the handling of these? Am I imagining things and being overly sensitive
due to the crash and this is user error?

[RBW] Re: Wire Routing For Rack-Mounted Tail Light

2014-12-27 Thread comveo
Hey Darin,

On my Hunqapillar, I routed the taillight wire along the left/underside of
my mini Nitto front rack and wrapped at strategic points with transparent
helicopter tape(the same stuff used for clear chainstay protectors). Then I
used the smallest black zip ties I could find to secure to wire to the FD
shifter housing, between the rack and the head tube, letting it smoothly
bend to the top tube and follow alongside the exposed rear cable, then down
the left seat stay and along the rear rack once more with more helicopter
tape. A picture is worth a thousand words here, so I'll try to post one
tomorrow.

Re: [RBW] Re: At long last, the Mammoth takes it's first breaths.

2014-10-04 Thread comveo
Hey David,

The saddle height as pictured is @ 31 or roughly 79cm.

Things you may want to keep in mind howeverthis is a taller saddle
(B67) with 175mm cranks and VP 001 thin platform pedals...which all
contribute to lowering saddle height a bit.
A more standard setup might push the exposed seatpost up another inch or
so...

I'm just a shade under 6' 2, with pretty average leg length for my height.
PBH is 89cm without shoes, 90cm with. The Nobby Nics @ 2.25 (54mm actual
on 28mm Velociy Cliffhanger rims) are the largest tires I'll likely ever
run, and the standover vs. reach feels great with the Bullmoose at max
height, if ever so slightly stretched (to be expected). With my other setup
being Albatross bars and a Dirt Drop stem, the seatpost/stem exposure
balance should still be favorable, visually, and the bars will be that much
higher and closer, also favorable for general cruising in subdued Beast
Mode.

I mulled over these visual relationships for more than a few minutes before
placing my order, along with how deeper V section rims should give the
illusion of the wheels being smaller, therefore keeping everything in
proportion with this frame size...just my opinion.

Yep, got a little wacky for sure : )

I promise this purchase was about more than aesthetics!

How tall are you/what's your PBH, David?

Hope some of this is useful,

-Bryan

Re: [RBW] Re: At long last, the Mammoth takes it's first breaths.

2014-10-04 Thread comveo
Super informative input, Patrick!

I likely could have gone with 62cm, but with no Riv test ride/sight unseen,
I was basing my decision in part on the 34 standover of my 62cm 1985
Univega Supra Sport (700c fixed gear conversion with 35mm Panaracer
T-Servs).

I felt like 34 was about the upper limit in terms of standover heigh I'd
like to have without leaning the bike/myself at stoplights/signs. And with
planning to use tires no smaller than my 2.15 Big Bens on the Hunq, I
guess I was able to pretty much match standover heights. If I was cool with
using 35-45mm tires on the 62cm, I'm sure I would have been just fine for
my comfort level. Again, all of this is just based on a bike I've ridden
for a handfull of years now/personal comfort/imagination.

Historically, I've used all of my bikes for commuting year round at one
point or another and have found it nice to have just a smidge more
standover.. For all of that off and on, off and on that comes with
commuting in cities/towns.

I'm also coming from this past season having ridden a 1994 Specialized
Hardrock set up as a beefy commuter that was about 2 sizes too small for
me. that might have played into the go with the 58cm...it'll still be
bigger than this : ) But hey, I found the frame in a pile of garbage on
the side of a local road so I made it work until the Hunqapillar was born.
Can't beat free, I suppose : )

On bikepacking:

I live very close to the Shawangunk Mountains so the initial rides will
likely just be day trips, but the weather does have it's swings up there
being about 1,600 ft in elevation above where i currently sit. Nothing
nearly as intense as the fuctuations you see in the Rockies I'd imagine.
From what I hear and have experienced so far, just windier and slightly
heavier precipitation that we might be having in the valley. At this point
in the season I shouldn't have to worry about carting too much up there
with me. Will probably just plan for 20 degree dips or so.
Just gong to take it slow and get my bearings with the terrain a bit better
and go from there : )

Patrick, all of the your pictures documenting your bike travels are
unbelievable! I'd love to ride where you're so fortunate to. Super
inspiring!

Also, your Hunqapillar handling what you throw it's way makes me want to
test it's ruggedness in a similar manner ; ) Thanks for showing what's
possible.

I work in a bike shop full of (newly added) Santa Cruz carbon so, I have to
stand my ground with the Riv stuff. Once everyone at the shop saw it,
however, minds were swayed a bit : )

than the average. I intentionally got the QB so it matched the top tube and
seat tube dimensions of the Hunqapillar. So, obviously, my vote (since I
have zero say in the matter) is there is nothing wrong with going bigger.
I've never had an issue with not being able to get off the bike or with the

@ Bryan: What's your plan for your bikepacking set up? This time of year
in the Rockies means needing to be prepared for winter conditions (10˚F,
windy, heavy snowfall, no matter what is predicted -- of course you may get
indian summer conditions just as easily, or in the same day) -- is it the

Frame: 58cm Green/Cream Hunqapillar 2TT

This bike will probably wear two outfits, depending on season/mood. I'll
have a couple of options for bars/tires/saddles.

Bars: Nitto Bullmoose/Albatross Bars, depending on what I'm feeling at the
moment. I've had Albas for years and oh boy...what a bar!

Wheels: 36h SonDeluxe Wide Body Front Hub
 Sapim Laser Spokes, Brass Nipples
 Velocity NoBs 700c Rims
White Industries Mi5 Rear Cassette Hub 36h

Tires: Schwalbe Big Bens 700x55/ Schwalbe Smart Sams 700x54

Cranks: Sugino xd600 175mm

BB: IRD Defiant 110 Square Taper

Cassette: Sram 8sp

Chain: Sram 8sp

Derailleurs: Tiagra Long Cage (Works just fine for now), R453 Triple
(Again, no problem with this and an xd600 on another bike) : )

Pedals: MKS Sylvan Prime

Seatpost: Nitto s83

Saddle: Brooks B-17 Aged Brown/ B-67 Brown

Brakes: Paul Touring Cantilevers, Canti Levers

Shifters: Ultegra 8sp Barcons, Paul Thumbies

Racks: Nitto Mini Front, Soon adding R-14

Basket: Wald 137 zip-zapped to the Mini

Bags: Medium Tan Shopsack up front, Large Tan Saddlesack in back.

Lights: Lumotec Cyo Premium front, Toplight Line Brake Plus rear

Fenders: Berthoud Stainless 60mm. (Sort of wish SKS would consider wide
700c plastic fenders, and even sent them an e-mail about it...chirp, chirp.
Maybe a longboard version of the P55 for 700c..: ) Never really cared for
the PB Cascadias...

I think that's it really. I commute year round in the Hudson Valley Region
of New York, so I feel like this bike has an interesting life ahead of it!

Do you think Wooly Nelson might be a fitting name? : )

I hope to get pictures going when the bike gets in. Pretty excited for sure!

Thanks all!

Bars: Nitto Bullmoose/Albatross Bars, depending on what I'm feeling at the
moment. I've had Albas for years and oh boy...what a bar!

Wheels: 36h SonDeluxe Wide Body Front Hub
 Sapim Laser Spokes, Brass Nipples
 Velocity NoBs 700c Rims
White Industries Mi5 Rear Cassette Hub 36h

Tires: Schwalbe Big Bens 700x55/ Schwalbe Smart Sams 700x54

Cranks: Sugino xd600 175mm

BB: IRD Defiant 110 Square Taper

Cassette: Sram 8sp

Chain: Sram 8sp

Derailleurs: Tiagra Long Cage (Works just fine for now), R453 Triple
(Again, no problem with this and an xd600 on another bike) : )

Pedals: MKS Sylvan Prime

Seatpost: Nitto s83

Saddle: Brooks B-17 Aged Brown/ B-67 Brown

Brakes: Paul Touring Cantilevers, Canti Levers

Shifters: Ultegra 8sp Barcons, Paul Thumbies

Racks: Nitto Mini Front, Soon adding R-14

Basket: Wald 137 zip-zapped to the Mini

Bags: Medium Tan Shopsack up front, Large Tan Saddlesack in back.

Lights: Lumotec Cyo Premium front, Toplight Line Brake Plus rear

Fenders: Berthoud Stainless 60mm. (Sort of wish SKS would consider wide
700c plastic fenders, and even sent them an e-mail about it...chirp, chirp.
Maybe a longboard version of the P55 for 700c..: ) Never really cared for
the PB Cascadias...

I think that's it really. I commute year round in the Hudson Valley Region
of New York, so I feel like this bike has an interesting life ahead of it!

Do you think Wooly Nelson might be a fitting name? : )

I hope to get pictures going when the bike gets in. Pretty excited for sure!

Thanks all!

With the arrival of a new Hunqapillar frame due next week, I thought it
timely to officially poke my head in, join the coop, get in the loop, and
 give you the scoop.

 Hope all is well,
