Andy! nice stuff. The turn buttons are a particularly nice addition. Did you already have all the leatherworking tools? Or was this project an excuse to buy tools? (I adore those kind of projects). I just wanted to see if anyone else in the Riv community enjoys making accessories for their bikes. If this is the case, I'd love to see what innovative things you've made. In the meantime, I'll post some images of things that I've made. During the past 2 years, I have been trying to perfect the rando bag but ultimately have been displeased with its lack of sturdiness. I enjoy making them, using them for a while, then gifting them to other cycling friends--this is great because it constantly gives me the opportunity to make new bags. While rando bags look great, I have yet to make one as versatile as a Wald basket. And after many years of debate, I have decided to stick with my Wald. With that in mind, I missed the tool pockets typically found at the back of a rando bag. So, I recently decided to create a couple of pouches to hang on the back side of my basket. Both pouches are 2 inches deep, 4 inches wide, and 5 inches high. There is also an extra 3 inches of flap available if I try to over-stuff the pouches. It was relatively easy to construct these little bags because canvas is such a forgiving material to work with. I have plastic stiffeners inside the bags (very similar to the ones in Acorn bags) and velcro attachments to keep everything in place. While these dimensions may seem small, I have all of my tools in the left pouch (inner tube, patch kit, multi tool, a pair of CO2 cartridges, 3 tire levers, zip ties, and 4 Irish straps). The pouch on the right is used to keep my cell phone, garage clicker, and keys; there is quite a bit of space left for snacks, a saddle cover, and a bandana. I'd love to see the folks at Riv create some Sackville versions of these because they're extremely versatile. Have a look--I am attaching JPEG images to this post. Also, I'd love to see any other accessories people make for their bikes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Bear trap pedals.
I have a set of beartraps on a rockhopper/albatross/2.5 tire hunq-style bike and i love them. At one time, i had two of the suntour xc-II bear traps which i thought were the absolute best. On a long dirt ride, the suntour bit the dust (mud) and was decimated on the long, bearing-less ride home. i went to the LBS and picked up one left side beartrap that was a knock-off with the same dimensions, only clearly more cheaply built. when i ride them together now, i notice absolutely no difference. in fact, i think now, the cheapy's bearings are in better shape than the suntour. long story short, i love my bear traps just as much as i like my grip-kings and mks tourers. in fact, i switch between them very often because i can't decide. happy riding! I love my long flap. I've packed it majorly full with a tent, poles, sleepingbag, clothes, and dinner for two on more than one occasion (bike camping with a roadie friend who made me carry everything). I think it's great. if you pop it on a marks rack or similar small rear rack, it gets it more upright, not eliminating, but reducing stuff falling outta the sides. the construction may not be that of a riv, but it's like comparing ben Davis pants vs. carhartts. they're both fuckin burly as hell, just the latter will survive the apocalypse. [RBW] Shimano 9spd DA Downtube Shifters in Bar End Pods?
Hey Y'all, I've got kind of an interesting issue- I'm trying out some indexing (not something I usually like) on my atlantis, and I've got a real pretty set of dura ace 9spd downtube shifters (SL-7700) that i'm sticking in the bar end pods that used to house my silvers. Has anyone tried this? It seems to shift okay, but for some reason there is no 'click' when i shift into the largest cog position. Is this normal? is it only supposed to have seven clicks, and then you just sort of hope the shifter stays when you're in your largest gear? That doesn't seem quite right to me. It will shift when you push it to it's last position, but it doesn't have that satisfying I'm not moving an inch click sound that all of the other positions have. [RBW] Re: What's your Rivendell story?
I had been in a gnarly bicycle accident on my old trek road bike in 2008. I was a victim of a hit and run in san francisco and i shattered my left leg. All of this put me in the hospital for six weeks and over a year of rehab and walking aids and surgeries after that. So far I've had seven surgeries, skin graft, bone graft, three fasciotomies from recurring compartment syndrome, etc etc etc. Anyway, I was eager to get back on a bicycle after this. I looked on CL, and I found an aluminum cannondale caad3. I thought this was right. I built her up with straps and I used to bungee my foldable cane to the handlebars so I could walk after riding. The cannondale had just never been comfortable enough after my injury though, and I was looking for something else. I considered a hybrid, mtb, touring frames, etc. I know I had quite a bit of bike karma out there for me, and one day there she was on CL - a 53cm atlantis, set up as an xtracycle no less, for $1000. I immediately called, said, don't sell her, I want it. I went there later that day, bought it for $900 (from the nice folks at xtracycle!). The rest is history. I haven't had ANY pain riding bikes since then, even with a mildly gimpy leg. --eli On Tuesday, August 21, 2012 8:06:10 AM UTC-7, lungimsam wrote: So how did you originally find out about them, and why/where/how did you get your first Rivendell bike? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: 650b Atlantis?
I'm a regular reader and a rare poster, but here it goes... I've got my 53cm Atlantis set up with 650B's and Paul Motos. After ALOT of research it's really the only way I could figure out to do the conversion. My reasons were more because I like the ride of larger wheels. Personally, I think the feel of a larger tire is smoother and slightly faster. I also like to ride 32's and the bike was most probably (big assumptions here) intended for large 26s. When I ride the 32 650B's it's much like riding 2.5 26s. One problem I've had, however, is that once you put tires and fenders on it, the direct pull brake cross top part comes awfully close to the fenders, and even touches in the front. This completely eliminates trying larger tires on the bike. I couldn't imagine that Hetres with fenders would fit. Do they, anyone? Anyway,I've found that the Atlantis rides quite nicely when it rides a bit higher and the difference is hardly noticed, but noticed enough to change the ride. [RBW] Re: Davinci splitters for cockpit swap
Wow Thomas, that's quite in depth. I've thought about trying to set up a davinci system between my Noodles and Albatross. How, and where did you set up the davinci couplers? i can't really decide what would be an optimal place for them. It looks like we have similar setups. I have the Paul motolites on my Atlantis and I find myself changing bars ALOT, costing me tons of dough in cables and housing. Let me know if you've got any suggestions, a good place to start, and also possibly a shopping list. I am going with bar end shifters and canti brakes. I have heard varying reports on how difficult this is, and am wondering if anyone that has done it can share some insight into setting them up. How long did it take? How did you do it? (particularly, how did you account for the added complexity of needing to cut the cables for the two different setups) Where did you make your cuts in the cable? Did you have cantilever brakes? Does it change how I would do things? I would really appreciate some help/insight/instructions. I have googled around and searched the groups, but most of what i have found simply says it's awesome to do this and be able to swap cockpits but haven't found anything that talks about how to actually do it. The instructions I have found are all geared toward using the splitters for the intended purpose of being a travel bike, so they aren't concerned with the extra complexity of a different cockpit type. [RBW] Re: Grant refers to this helmet guy for some reason
As someone who bicycles everyday in a metropolitan city (SF) and also has been in a near fatal car/bicycle accident, i use a helmet every time i ride. People drive crazy here, and not wearing a helmet and getting hit by a car can mean the difference between a hospital stay and a trip to the morgue. After spending three weeks in SF General hospital with a shattered leg and skin grafts, and nearly a year and a half off of a bicycle, i'm afraid to ride without one. and now, it just feels like a habit. i understand this guy's point as far as getting cyclists on the road by taking the fear out of it, but i also very much understand the use and impact of carefully selected statistics. i'm not afraid of cycling, i'm afraid of smashing my skull. If you look at this website: http://www.bhsi.org/stats.htm , you can see that of all bicycle deaths in 2008, 91% were not wearing helmets, while the other 9% were. I think that's a rather clear statistic. You may have a low chance of actually getting in an accident on your bicycle compared to lets say, driving a car, but if you do, it looks as though helmets will save your life.
