yes, i'm specifically looking for the Sugino version that Riv used to sell,
not the Silver version that Riv currently sells (but is out of).
I hadn't realized that Sugino stopped making them. I guess the market for
40T chainguards is pretty small afterall.

Joey, amazing project..probably not in cards for me though!

[RBW] Who Blugs a Ride?

2019-05-23 Thread jandrews
Who rides an Appaloosa?

That new blug update is wining a lot of gold stars from me.
from the Rodin-esque thinking persons' countenance to the respectful taking
of the knee.
I can't say it's one-upping the previous blug post - Who Rides an A.H.H. -
but it definitely makes for a solid 2 for 2.

That bike is also a special build.

Curious if you all can help ID some things.
If those are Rocket Rons, they are either 29x 2.1 or 29x2.25.
Any thoughts as to which
Also what are the rims? Can't tell.

I've got my new Appaloosa set up similarly with friction 3x9 and 2.1
knobbier under fenders but I'd like to go a little fatter and wider.
working on putting a wheel set together, maybe with Cliffhangers to do
that. hence my question 'bout those rims.

Loving these "Who Rides a" blugs. Maybe there will be a "Who Rides a
Canti-Romulus" one of these days.

[RBW] advice on 26x2.0 tires

2019-05-20 Thread jandrews
Greetings Bunch

I'm looking for some new commuting / touring / gravelish tires for my
wife's Bruce Gordon BLT.

She currently has the older Compass tires that had the pasela looking
tread. They are 26x1.75

We've recently had the bike overhauled a little after about 10 years of
pretty hard use and the existing stainless steel fenders will allow some
slightly bigger rubber.

She's starting to commute to work which is on a farm. It's about a 6 mile
commute and there is about a mile and and a half of pretty large gravel.

Any suggestions on a nice riding, somewhat supple, somewhat protective tire
(for Tubes) that would fit the bill. something in 26x2.0 or 2.1 max that
is also not going to break the bank?

She commutes and we do a couple of week long tours per year. Ride plenty
of gravel and hard pack. Not much mud.

Thanks

[RBW] Nitto M18 vs Mini Front for carrying a basket

2019-05-11 Thread jandrews
I know the Mini Front is somewhat suspect for carrying a loaded basket on ,
but is an M18 with the 4 struts (i.,e. 2 to the top of the fork mounts, and
2 to the mid fork braze ons) PLUS the diving board (or not) any better?

[RBW] stripped derailleur hanger threads

2019-05-10 Thread jandrews
Surprisingly this topic hasn't been covered all that much on this list.
my 2009 Sam has stripped threads in the derailleur hanger tab.
I noticed it when doing some recent drivetrain work on it and realize I was
probably riding it with a loose derailleur for some time.
I was replacing installing a Wolftooth Roadlink when I discovered I
couldn't sink the bolt in far enough to make a secure connection. When I
reverted back to my original derailleur, the same issue presented itself.
It seems like the most outboard threads are the ones that are stripped and
the very inner threads still have grip.
So, my query here is , what should I do.
I've been recommended the Wheels Mfg. Dropout Savers which seem like a very
smart, very strong fix to this problem, but the thought of drilling out the
hanger tab feels like almost a last resort.
I guess the real last resort is taking it to a builder to put on a new rear
dropout but I don't really want to do that right now either.

Are there any other fixes to this problem besides the Dropout Savers?
And...has anyone here used the Dropout Savers successfully?
thanks

[RBW] Re: WTB parts for my newish Sam Hillborne

2019-04-30 Thread jandrews
Hi Dave
I have a quality wheel set that may be right for you.
It came from Rivendell on my complete Sam Hillborne that I bought new in
2009.
It saw about a year of use before I purchased a dynohub wheelset and
they've had very light use since then.

700c Silver Velocity "Synergy" rims with the O/C (off-center) rear., 32
Hole (I think) and Deore Hubs (They may be Deore "LX", I can't remember,
I'll check in the morning)

I don't think they were built by Rivendell but rather were stock wheels
from Velocity that Riv adjusted and sold on the Sam...I could be wrong
about that and they could be Riv built, but I suspect not.

I would sell them for $100ea. so $200 for the set. plus shipping. I could
probably arrange reasonable shipping and I may even have a wheel box.
let me know if you're interested
Jason

I'd like to make my new Appaloosa a drop bar bike and I'm on a size that is
big for me,...fit's but big. 55cm seat tube, 60cm top tube
>From all my futzing it seems like 4cm stem with noodles or dirt drops would
do the trick. I know I can easily buy a Technomic 5cm but curious if there
are other options out there that may be a centimeter or two shorter?

[RBW] Re: Mystery bike in April Blahg

2019-04-25 Thread jandrews
Regarding the namesIn general , I find the gendered names of the frames
a little annoying. I always cringed that the earlier mixte was the Betty.
Applying masculine names to the other "normal" bikes is equally
problematic.
I love the names Atlantis, Saluki, Cheviot, Hunqapillar, etc. Love the
name Appaloosa, I would be happier without the Joe in front. Same goes for
the Sam.
I think Clementine is an awesome name and I wish both the L and H were
Clementines.

I don't think they did all that much but they sort of gave me a feeling of

I think the RM-3 may be too narrow at the levers and, according to the

So, looking for something a little more tour-worthy and comfortable but
with minimal drop and a decent about of flare
any thoughts?

Regarding those bars, from my limited research, I seem to recall there being
two versions in terms of sizing and it’s a bit misleading how wide they really
are.
Can you give a sense of how wide these are at the drops and at the ends?
Can you compare to, say a 46 noodle?
Thinking of getting a 25.4 clamp version of this on a very short stem for my
new Appaloosa build
Thanks

[RBW] Suggestions for drop bar levers for use with Motolites

2019-03-30 Thread jandrews
I know there aren’t a lot of options out there , but maybe something new has
popped up in recent years. What’s the best feeling and performing long linear
pull drop bar lever for use with Motolite V-brakes.
I have the Paul Love levers for mountain bars that feel incredible controlling
those brakes. Is there anything for drops that operate as well?
Thank you

[RBW] aluminum under front derailleur clamp

2019-03-27 Thread jandrews
Hi
I often see some bits of aluminum underneath the front derailleur clamp
to presumably act as a soft shim to keep the seat tube from being
crimped due to over tightening of the clamp?.
I crimped a seat tube before in the past and want to avoid that on my new
Appaloosa build.
where does one find this stuff? Is it a tape? or just strips of aluminum
that are cut to fit in the clamp?
Thanks

I've been offered a couple of frames that aren't silver and I may go that
route, but would prefer that color.
Thanks

[RBW] 55cm Joe Appa owners, what's your pbh?

2019-02-03 Thread jandrews
hi, I've been sort of in the market for a 55cm App for awhile and that's
heating up a bit now that spring is coming into a view bit
I ride a 56cm Sam so I've assumed I'd be a 55cm App.
my pbh is 84.5
Any owners of the 55 around that number?
Thanks

FYI
not sure if there is a person or group of people doing the
coordination/planning for this..
But I'm working with someone who owns a hotel/lodge in Minnewaska. I
mentioned this to him yesterday and he said that depending on the date(s)
and size of the group he could likely accommodate a large-ish group with a
group rate and bike storage, etc.
If there's anyone who'd like me to make an intro or take that initial
communication on myself...I'd be happy too.

+1 on Minnewaska ...I would join that ride. It's a very beautiful park
and nice climbs and lookouts on the roads leading up to it. Excellent
carriage roads once in the park. I saw two bears there on one day a
couple years ago. The roads can get very trafficy depending on the day of
the week and the season though.

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Protovelo - complete bike 57.5cm

2019-01-08 Thread jandrews
Hello
I've had some questions regarding the other measurements and geometry of
this frame.
This bike is looking very close to a 57cm Roadini geo from the charts
Here's some measurements taken with a tailors tape by me attempting to be
as precise and accurate as possible

   - The Top Tube is 57.5cm center to center with what appears to be
essentially a 59cm effective top tube
   - The Seat Tube is measuring 57.5cm center to center
   - The Down Tube is measuring 64.4cm center to center
   - The Head Tube is measuring 21.5cm
   - The Chain Stays are measuring 45.5cm center to center
   - The Seat Stays are measuring 38.5cm (*from the dropout center to the
   brake bridge*)

Greetings Bunch
I'm bumping this sale again...
I've completed my move into a new old (house) and I must find a new home
for this spritely yet comfy roadish Protovelo.
Dropping price to $1200 including shipping (in co. US)
Please respond with any questions
thanks

I’m reposting this Protovelo for sale after happily not selling it last
year. It was a terrific performer this summer but I still would like to
sell it. I’m moving into a new place and majorly need to downsize plus my
riding is less and less roady.

57.5cm Protovelo road bike for sale:

This is a fun, light and nimble bike looking for a new home.

The frame is somewhat of an odd duck. I am not sure what exactly this frame
was a prototype for, although a current Riv employee suggested it could've
been geometry testing for the San Marcos with thinner tubing.

I purchased it from Kevin at Riv in about 2012. I was interested in buying
a Roadeo at the time and they posted this frameset and I purchased it
instead.

I believe that it has a Roadeo fork from Toyo in JP. It’s a slender,
nicely curved fork with cream dropouts and no mounting bosses mid-fork.
(the seat stays have typical Riv bosses, 2 at the dropouts and one mid-stay
and one by the seat cluster)

This frameset has Hilborne headtube lugs and a Homer bottom bracket shell.
Also, odd-duckishly, the front fork takes a medium-reach caliper and the
rear brake is a long-reach. I believe the frame was U.S. made. Also, I
believe the color is "RBW Blue".

The sizing was listed as 57.5cm and that’s the measurement for both the
seat tube and the top tube.

Rear spacing is 130mm.

My PBH is 84.5 and this bike was just a smidge big for me but never ever a
real issue. When I'm standing with feet firmly on the ground the top tube
is right up there but workable.

The reach on this bike is great compared to my too-long top tube
first-generation Hillborne which is 56/59.

I built this bike up as a go-fast road bike and while it served that
purpose very well, that’s not the type of riding I really do. I ride my
much heavier Hillborne more or my off-road singlespeed.

The wheels are very nice, built by Anthony King. - White Industries T11
polished 28h laced to IRD “Cadence” lightweight rims.. Rear is “VSR” or
offset. Both have wheelsmith spokes. (42 Wheelsmith XL14 2.0/1.5/2.0
 Silver Spoke w/ Brass Nipples & 14 Wheelsmith DB14 2.0/1.7/2.0 Silver
Spoke w/ Silver Brass Nipples)

Tires are Jack Brown Greens with plenty of life left

Cream longboard fenders

SRAM Apex mini-group - Front and Rear Derailleurs as well as a SRAM
cassette (11-32 10spd) & chain and Apex “double tap” shifter/levers

Crankset - NOS (*when I installed it*) - 170mm Sugino AT with Specialities
TA “Syrius” 50/34 10 speed chainrings {122.5 UN52 bb)

Bars are Mark’s “Dream Bar” in heat treated 46cm by Nitto.

Stem is 9cm or 10cm Tech Deluxe...I'll check.

Wrapped in black Newbaums.

Headset is FSA that Riv uses.

Brakes - Rear Tektro R559, Front Tektro R538

Seatpost - Thomson “Elite” , black - no offset.

CLEARANCE: The bike is running JB greens with longboard fenders. I think
it would probably run Barlow Pass 38's without a problem, but I haven't
tested that. After doing some research by the numbers, I believethat Paul
Racers (not M's) would handle the difference of the long reach in the back
and med reach in the front and allow for a little more clearance ...but I
haven't personally tested that.

Issues:  {pics attached for all this}

There are few small chips in the paint. , the most offensive being on the
downtube just below the water bottle cage. There is also a small one on
the top tube as well as a couple small ones on the inside of the non-drive
side chain stay and some rash along drive-side seat stay. Most of this was
received from being in my Thule car bike carrier and being rubbed my
friends bike next to it.

I've detailed these chips in the photo gallery

I'm in the Hudson Valley of Upstate New York but can easily meet in NYC
with the bike.

will discount slightly for a local sale.

Please know that when I say "I believe", I'm giving you my honest thought
process based on speaking to employees at RBW and being a good steward of
the bike for the past 6 or so years, but I can't confirm those statements
100% and I may be mistaken.

Many detailed photos can be seen at this link: Sorry for poor photography
quality

[RBW] Stronglight Fenders

2018-09-07 Thread jandrews
Hello
Curious if anyone has used the new Stronglight fenders that P.W. sells?
https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/str-mg.php
I see they come in a 700x55 which is what I think I need to max out my 1st
gen S.H.
Currently I have 50mm fenders and am running 700x43 tires. There is a
little bit of wiggle room at the chain stay bridge and under the fork crown
to go bigger, but I know from experience I can not fit the 700x60
stainless Berthoud fenders I purchased many years ago.
I have not seen a lot of 55mm width fenders for 700c wheels, so these may
do the trick.
Also curious about coverage...does anyone have them installed on their bike?
thank you

I had both a 58 QB and a 58 SO. I kept the SO.
They have identical geo. and only slight variations with regards to things
like drop-out eyelets and rack attachments.
I don't know about tubing differences. The QB was made by Panasonic and
the SO by Maxway, I think. However, my feeling between the two bikes was
that the QB was a *little* spritelier and the SO a *little* more heavy
duty.Maybe different tubing specs, not sure?

[RBW] silver shifter adapter for Paul thumbies

Hello, I have an older (non-hinged) pair of Paul thumbies for Shimano
shifters. I'd like to use Dia-Compe (Silver) friction shift levers on the
mounts. I know Riv used to sell an adapter to make this work, but I don't
believe it's available on their site any longer. Does anyone know which
piece is needed? or does anyone have this they'd like to sell?
Thank you
Jason

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet Castle PBP / Cheviot free of wobble / Roadini commuting

Look up AMS Powdercoating in Queens, Jamaica Ave.
Not sure if he does clear powder or not.
I had my '09 S.H. media-blasted and powder coated there.
