[RBW] FS: Rockgeist Boxy Randonneur bag - one of a kind

2023-07-10 Thread lukeheller
A local bag maker, https://rockgeist.com/, made this for my sister for
PBP2019 and she never used it. It's got a VO decaleur attached and it's
ready to roll.

Rockgeist is a very well known and respected custom frame bag company local
to Asheville.
They routinely have waitlists.
They have only ever made 2 of these boxy randonneurs bags... this one and
the one I use that is much taller. So this is 2 of a kind except mine
is taller.

I asked them to copy my old Swift bag with a couple changes such as:
-elastic on the inside (typical on current models)
-plastic buckles because the stainless buckles DO RUST
-an expandable side pocket on the right side.
-all XPAC material

The pink liner is helpful to brighten things up a bit when looking into the
abyss of your bag.

I've been using mine for 10,000+ miles and it continues to be an amazing
bag.
They only wear spots are at the tombstone and a few rub spots on the
underside which i'll get around to covering with a patch one day.

PICS: https://photos.app.goo.gl/rxxH71eyZujR4mfDA

Dimensions are:
10.25" wide
7.25" deep
7.75" tall

The bag is in new condition only with the derailleur attached.
Asking $250 total for the bag + shipping
Get it in time for PBP.
Please message me directly if interested.

[RBW] Re: Riv Riders in Western NC

2023-02-13 Thread lukeheller
I used to ride a Riv Canti-Rom for a few years when i first started riding
brevets in 2012.
No longer ride a riv but all my bikes are riv inspired. I've had several
custom frames that are spin offs from my canti-rom.
I'm the local organizer for the Asheville Intl Randonneurs and live in
Asheville if anyone wants to drink the kool-aid.

[RBW] FS: VO Grand Cru 50.4 BCD Crankset 175mm + extras 46/30

2023-02-13 Thread lukeheller
Prefer to sell the entire set.
$275 shipped CONUS
-1 crankset, valued @ $200
-2x 118 square taper BBs, valued @ $80 for 2
-1 spare set of rings, valued @ $105

 photos

I tried these and they weren't for me (or for my frame).
The custom frame i put them has too wide a yoke for these. I found that out
after just a few pedal strokes and there's a small marring on the inside of
the DS crankarm. I could've gone for a wider spindle but that just didn't
feel right. I tried them on another bike for a 50km ride and decided they
just weren't for me.

One BB and the cranks have been used for 50km.
The bad:
-very minor marring on the inner DS crankarm
-one of the crank caps is slightly mangled at the face

Thanks
Luke in Asheville

 Hi -

In spite of the virus, the fires, etc., 2020 has been really good for
me. I seem to accumulate lots of parts. I have no room for them. So I want
to send them to you! All prices below include shipping.

 1) Silver friction levers mated to Shimano bar end pods. These are in
great shape and have lots of miles left in them. These are the original
Silver shifters - not the second generation recently released. $10 shipped.

 2) Nitto Campee Rack. Not sure which rack this is - but it came off the
front of my son's SimpleOne. $10 shipped.

 3) MKS Track Pedals. Great, inexpensive, durable pedals. Also in great
 shape. $15 shipped.

 4) Vittoria 700c x 25/32mm tubes. $5 shipped for both.

 5) Shimano Flat Bar Brake Levers. In great shape. $10 shipped.

 6) Park Spanners. 13, 14 and 15mm. One each. $5 shipped for all three.

 7) Lumotec IQ Headlight. Plenty of wire here. Was mounted to the Nitto
rack above. Most of the wire ran to the tail light.

 8) Velocity Quick Release Skewer. Came on my Hubbuhubbuh. I think the
 OLD is 140mm.

 9) Tail Light. This went with the Lumotec IQ above. $2 shipped.

 10) Third Hand Tool. A piece of ancient history. I used to clamp my
brakes together with this thing to get cable slack, etc. $2 shipped.

 11) Couple of sidepull brakes. A Shimano 600 "standard" reach, and a
short reach brake. Not sure where these came from. Throwing in the lever
 in
the picture as well $5 shipped for both.

 12) Skewers from Schmidt Dynohubs. These take and allen wrench. $2
 shipped for both.

 13) Riese and Müller Handlebar Mount for Dynamo Light. In great shape.
 Used sparingly. $2 shipped.

 14) Ritchey 10 and 12cm Threadless Stems. These have two-bolt
faceplates. Not sure about the rise. $10 shipped each.

 15) Nitto UI-5GX Threadless Stems. These are some of the most elegant
stems anywhere. Four bolt faceplates. $15 shipped each.

 16) 18 tooth cog for your fixed gear. Not much wear on this one. Came
off my son's fixed gear before he rode it. $2 shipped.

 17) Nitto R Bottle Cages. These are the light ones. Very sleek and
elegant. The solid ones - not the hollow ones. $20 shipped each.

 18) Giant Threadless Stem. Not as pretty as the others - but it's a
long one: 13cm. Two bolt faceplate. $5 shipped.

If any of you are in the SF Bay Area and want to come to my house in

2020-02-09 Thread lukeheller
110bcd black TA zephyr rings (2x 48t and 1x 33t). They're all pretty new. The 2
with grease have less than 50 miles... Probably more like 20 gravel miles. I
didn't clean them intentionally. The one that's been cleaned I can't recall
even using because I always prev used silver rings but it's clearly not brand
new. Yet it looks to be in VGC. They're all 9/10 speed.

$190 shipped CONUS (i-Bob cross-post)

A custom large runs $263. Here's >25% off shipped.
This was 1 of 2 rando bags that I rotated between for 2 years; the other
was on another bike.
I'm replacing this with a new custom from a local bag maker; not better,
just different. Support local, ya know.

The beauty has no rips or tears. I've done my best to give a fair
representation of the bag's condition. There is some discoloration/rust on
the stainless buckles.

Size LARGE

Body: Teal
Pockets: Hot Pink

[RBW] Re: Did you stop using Compass tires?

2018-02-02 Thread lukeheller
I have been using the 35 non Jon pass tires on my Rando bike for 1.5 years now.
They have been amazing. Prior to going to London this past summer for LEL
1400km, I looked at the tires and thought... “hmm, I should replace those.”
Instead, I went against conventional wisdom and rotated the tires. I’ve put
probably 2,000 more miles on them since. And they’re still kicking.

I ride the standard casing BJP tubeless at 65psi rear, 60psi front. I’ve had 1
flat in, who knows 5-6k miles, on a 400k caused by a metal shard. Removed
shard, added air, sealed right up. The only other flat was one morning when I
walked into the basement and it went flat overnight due to low sealant. I love
the ride feel and the durability. I could ride a potentially more durable tire
but why suffer a dead riding tire?

I purchased some BJP EL to upgrade to. I’ll be doing that when I retire the
existing wheel set/tires to a different bike.
I also purchashed some EL 650bx48’s. I enjoy the WTB Horizons on my Elephant
but they are slightly dead feeling. I acknowledge those horizons will NEVER
wear out. Whenever the sealant dries up, I guess I’ll swap them then and
compare.

I scoffed at Compass tires for years feeling justified in not spending that
much for tires just to get more flats.
My experience has been entirely to the contrary.

2016-02-01 Thread lukeheller
It's been a few months since a post on this thread so I want to bring
it back to see if anyone has any recent experience.

I'm trying to mount a LUXOS U below the bag on a Soma Champs Elysses front
rack (struts have no built-in mounts).

1. is it an effective solution? is it jiggly? many of my homemade mounts
don't keep the Luxos from jiggling around.

2. does the diameter of the strut matter? Are they all about the same? The
website specifies use on a specific rack strut.

3. and most importantly, maybe?
is this something that I might have in my nuts and bolts bin already
that I just need to put together?? I can't really see what all the parts
are. Has anyone crafted ab equivalent?

2016-02-01 Thread lukeheller
I am using the MINI soma champs elysses rack. Therefore, the bolt *could* slide
up the strut *IF* the flattened section is not too wide.

*DAVID* - would you mind checking if a nitto bolt will slide over the soma
strut? - thanks

I have tried using an old centerpull arm
<https://www.instagram.com/p/6DzYBoHmsY/?taken-by=pieboypeddler> but it was
way too jiggly. I could just flick the light and it would vibrate. I
didn't use nylock nuts though - would it make that much of a dfference?
I know it's mounted on the left in this pic but I will actually be mounting
the light on the *RIGHT*.

[RBW] Re: FS: Elephant NFE f/f/hs 700c 60cm, lowtrail, couplers

2015-12-28 Thread lukeheller
My custom 700c canti Elephant NFE with couplers is back up for sale.

I rode it for 2 years and successfully completed three 1200km grand
randonnees - most recently the well-known Paris-Brest-Paris in August of
2015.

It's got typical signs of use and that of being packed a few times in an
S case. After I got back from France, i stripped the frame and touched up
some of the nicks with a powdercoat touch-up spray paint with a matched
RAL# to prevent and potential for moisture getting underneath the powder.
Buyer can have the can of touch paint - there's plenty.

full disclosure - I had a silly fall right before PBP and had Brad Wilson
of Capricorn Bikes in Marshall, NC re-rake fork and check alignment of the
frame. Everything is in tip-top shape. He inspected for cracks and anything
concerning - all good.

Your choice of brakes - $50
TRP CX8.4 - on the bike now
Cane Creek SCX5 - near new condition

Seatpost binder included - just recently upgraded to a KCNC SC13, blue
(clamps frame AND post) - ti bolts

Headset included. I think I even have a spare NIB that I'll include for an
extra $35 if the buyer wants.

Frame takes a Bruce Gorden Rock n Road 700x43 with room to spare and is
equally suited for some skinny 28's.

If you want a full rando setup, we can talk dynamo lights and wheel
package. The wheels are fresh. Front wheel was rebuilt before PBP, rear
wheel built with DT Swiss350 right after PBP. Both on PL23 Pacenti rims

Now $1500 shipped.

Oh yeah, it shimmys with or without the saddle bag by the way. But I put a
lot of effort into front loading that bike to reduce shimmy. I only use a
saddle bag on it for 1200's or unsupported 600kms.

2015-07-27 Thread lukeheller
I need some help from the Sam owners out there just a quick measurement.

center of REAR axle to center of brake bolt.

I'm planning a custom and curious what the Sam's are hitting at. I want to
maximize tire clearance while simultaneously maintaining braking power with
the Tektro R559's.

just need to fit my tools, jacket, snacks, wallet, phone, a lock, etc.

Hoping for something that is maybe wider like a rando bag, but not as tall.

Is there anything like that out there?

[RBW] FS: Elephant NFE f/f/hs 700c 60cm, lowtrail, couplers

2014-09-01 Thread lukeheller
This bike is still in my fleet but I'm considering selling it.

Frame built in May 2013. It's been my main bike for the last year and I
flew with it 3x. Pics in the link below are from when it was freshly built.
So it looks like it's been ridden for a year since then but it good
condition. Removed decals on toptube and seattube. NDS sticker scratched
from travel but I have some spares in ORANGE or I can check with Glenn
about getting some fresh ones.

Fits 35's with fenders. May even fit bigger but haven't tried. Generator
light wire guides.

It's pictured with a Cane Creek 110 headset but it will come with the ano
blue Token needle bearing HS (looks very similar) I have on there now to
minimize shimmy.

Re: [RBW] Large Rando bag / rack / decaleur interface

2014-05-29 Thread lukeheller
I'm curious about this too as I'm about to start sewing my own bag and want
a TALL bag... maybe 10 inches tall. I have always used VO decaleurs without
issue but only on smaller bags.

The attraction of the VO decauleur is obviously the price... and the fact
that I already them on 3 bikes.

I have had success in making small adjustments to the VO decaleur by
bending the angle of the arms but nothing drastic.

In looking at my current setup, I think I can get away with using the same
decaleur but just move it to the top of the stack underneath the stem.. and
then just bend the arms back up a bit

I posted this on the Lifestyles list but didn't get any feedback.

I use an Acorn Rondeneur bag on both my Saluki (62 CM/650B) with a VO
rack but no decaleur and on our Tandem (26 ) with an RBW Mark's rack and
no decaleur. It works OK, but I am considering moving to a taller bag -
250 - 270mm, which would require a decaleur. The VO website suggests that
neither the rack nor decaleur are guaranteed to work with a tall bag.

What rack decaleurs are people using happily with these tall bags?
What problems have you had to overcome?

AFAIK the Berthoud GB28 and its fancier cousin, the GB2886 are the tallest
bags out there. I use both: the 2886 with Berthoud decaleurs, the GB28
with the VO decaleur. Both work fine. There's much more adjustability
with the Berthoud decaleur, virtually none other than the location of the
spacer in the stack on the steerer tube with the VO; presumably that's what
the not guaranteed to work means. There's also no adjustability to speak
of with the Grand Bois decaleur. You have to size the bag according to the
amount of space provided between the rack and the handlebar (underside of
the stem handlebar clamp bolt, actually, in the case of the Berthoud) or
the head tube (more accurately, the spacer surrounding the steerer tube to
 which the VO decaleur mounts).

As for racks, nothing very critical there. I'm using a TA rack that bolts
to a Mafac Raid centerpull to support the GB28, and have used a Berthoud
front rack, a VO Randonneur front rack and a custom Mitch Pryor front rack
to support the GB2886. You absolutely do need a rack, and it should have a
tombstone. Here's a view of the GB2886 sitting on a Berthoud front
rack, supported by a Berthoud decaleur, on my (now Tony's) green Saluki
that illustrates the setup pretty well:

[RBW] Re: 400k plus

2014-05-25 Thread lukeheller
There's no perfect formula to know when you've trained enough to meet your
next goal. However, the 200-300-400-600 progression is a really good guide
in my experience. Do you need to fill the 400-600 gap with a 500k? No, I
really don't think so.

I'd like to believe:
if you can ride a 100k, you can ride a 200k
if you can ride a 200k, you can ride a 300k
if you can ride a 300k, you can ride a 400k
if you can ride a 400k, you can ride a 600k
if you can ride a 600k, you can ride a 1200k

after all, isn't one of the greatest barriers to our own accomplishments
what *we believe we can do?*

when I started doing brevets, the closest brevets were a minimum of 3-4
hours away. I did my first 400k before ever doing a 300k but I had been
training and doing many 100mile+ rides in the mountains which added a
considerable amount of difficulty. So you see, i was convinced that my
mountainous 200k's had adequately prepared me for a flat/rolling 400k. and
it did. i think largely, because i believed it would.

once you get on the other side of your first complete brevet series, your
conception of what you can accomplish on a bicycle will be drastically
different. mine was.

200s and 300s are a fair bit easier because you don't have to worry about
the sleep monster.
400s - the sleep monster begin to rear it's ugly head at times.
600s - the sleep monster cometh

however, i'd rather ride a 600 any day than a 400 for some reason. 400's
are just my tough spot. something about getting to the bed for a brief nap
before riding the last 200k on a 600k is far more enticing than just
finishing a 400k.

i did my first few years of brevets + my first 1000k on my Romulus.

see you in Paris!

I know several of you in the group ride brevets so it's time to pick your

a DNF 300k followed by finishing a planned 175 mile ride. I've had no rides
over 50-60 miles since until this year, got fat, etc. I decided I needed a
goal to help motivate me so I put PBP 2015 on the calendar. I've lost over
45 lbs and am loving riding again. I did a 200k a couple of weeks ago and
have a 300k next week which I'm nervous about but fairly confident. My
question is about beyond that. I'm wondering if I need to progress to the
other distances. In other words, should I try 350k before 400 then 500
before 600? Or do you think that by the time I've gone 300k that the base
is built up enough to sustain the larger jumps in time and distance? Riv
content: I'm riding this on my Homer and loving it! I'd like to complete
the whole series (200,300,400, 600) this summer so I'll have a good taste
for what's in store next year in Paris.

[RBW] WTB/T: Large Boxy Rando Bag

2014-05-13 Thread lukeheller
I've contemplated making my own because they're so costly. I'm not
convinced I'll do a satisfactory job.
Summer is coming and as a public school employee, you know how that goes.

I have 2 of the VO Campagne rando bags that I'd be willing to trade up for
a larger one. For 600k+ rides, I've found I really need more space. I'll
happily trade up the better of the two to an interested party. I also have
a Mel Pinto that's in usable but fair condition - it's like a GB 25.

Anything in the *large* rando bag camp would work. Such as
Swift Ozette L
Acorn TALL Boxy Rando

Must have:
Map case
Open facing rider
2 rear facing pockets

Please send direct message with any offers. Thanks in advance.

Bummer Patrick! I was feeling pessimistic that a trade would happen when
someone offered to buy the bars outright so I sold them in a moment of
weakness. Would be interested in a straight purchase of yours if interested
though.

Christopher, these are for a 1-1/8 (blasphemy!) threadless fork so the

now does not have canti's. Therefore, I need the M-18. If you happen to
have one lying around for sale or have one you want to trade, please let me

[RBW] Re: Drop Bar Suggestions?

2012-10-02 Thread lukeheller
I second the vote for the SALSA COWBELL.

I have been on a rampage for the right bars. I have a set of salsa bell
lap's on my Surly LHT touring bike but decided, when building my Riv, that
I should go with the classic look of the quill stem + polished silver Nitto
Bars.

I started out with the B135 Rando bars. I liked them for a good while till
the narrow hoods just wore me out. If they were 45 in the hoods instead of
the drops, I probably would've kept them. However, those bars are not for
big riders!

I had a set of 46cm noodles on another bike that I liked... but not that
much.

After swapping bars and stems several times on my Riv, I decided that I was
done with quill stems and that I'd try out the quill stem adapter so I can
try some 31.8 bars. There are so many more bars options in 31.8. So I'm now
running the 46cm Salsa Cowbell 2 and love them. I love them so much that I
put another set on my other bike... and I ordered a set for my sister's
bike... and I put them on a bike I built for my buddy. I know bars are a
personal thing but I think these bars have a great formula going for them.

The short reach, shallow drop, and flare in the drops in fantastic. I
highly recommend!

I know Noodles of course, and I've tried them in 3 different widths and
for some reason they don't hit home for me.
If you had to put a drop bar other than a Noodle on your Riv/Riv-ish bike,
 what would it be?
