Lucky you! Let me know if they find a large one as well. : ) It's
nowhere in the budget, I would sure try.

[RBW] Re: Who wants a Hunqadiscer?

2018-02-03 Thread rw1911
I wrote a big, long response sharing my personal experiences with moving to
new tech related to bikes and cars, but in the end, I came to the same
place...

Why not? Disc brakes are good. Maybe they they don't have the character
or aesthetics of our beloved rim brakes, but they are good, even better
when added to the already wonderful qualities of a Riv. (lugged Hunqadiscer
for me please)

Jan did very well for himself. I submit http://www.ebay.com/itm/112439926538

I've had several inquiries about selling just the Road and Ram framesets.
I would strongly prefer to sell them as complete bikes, so keep the
interest coming!

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Road, Rambouillet and a poor man's Hunqapillar

2017-06-01 Thread rw1911
A pending move has motivated me to thin the herd a bit...

First up is a Rivendell Road with a very nice 10 speed Campy build. The
61cm Waterford built frame is Reynolds 753 and 531 fork with light metallic
blue paint and a cream head tube. The build is a mix of Centaur, Record
and Chorus with a beautiful Specailites TA crankset. The bars, stem and
seat pillar are Nitto and it rides on a new set of 30mm Grand Bois Cypress
tires. $1850

Link to Cyclofiend page on the Rivendell Road info and geometry:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/gen1/ and hopefully a photo is displayed
below.

Next is my 60cm Rambouillet. It's spec'd pretty much as when originally
sold with a solid Riv build. It currently rides on fast 27mm Challenge
Paris Roubiax tires which could be swapped for some Paselas if you prefer
something little wider. $1600

Link to Cyclofiend page on the Rivendell Rambouillet info and geometry:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/rambouillet/index.html and hopefully a photo
displayed below.

Finally, (I hope the list doesn't mind me slipping this in) is my Giant
Peace 29R... sort of Hunq-like? It's a size large which is a 19" seat
tube. This is a very nice ride with a Reynolds 520 frame with a Shimano
Deore group and Easton, Tektro, WTB components. It has been upgraded with
On-One Mary bars and Ergon grips. $500 Hopefully a photo here too:

All of the bikes show use, but no damage, dents or dings. Shipping,
saddles and bottle cages are not included. I will ship via Bike Flights
unless the buyer prefers another method. I am located in SE PA.
Delivery/meet-up between Philly, Baltimore and DC may be possible schedule
permitting. I'm sure I missed something so please feel free to contact me
directly with questions or interest.

[RBW] Re: FS: Waterford Rivendell Road Standard/Custom

2015-11-25 Thread rw1911
Wow. A lot of unexpected, but lively and good discussion here, but now
it's seeming to get a bit off-topic.

Back on topic... to address a few points that I have received privately
and on the list related to this particular frame, or complete bike if you
choose:

Model: I'm 99% sure this is a '96/97 Road Standard, but there is 1% of me
that wonders if it is a Custom because it doesn't 100% meet the specs I
have been able to find. Probably just a variance in manufacturing though.
As far as I can tell the paint is original, showing great care with a some
patina. Truly excellent for a nearly 20 year old frame.

Tire clearance: I'm currently running Grand Bois Cypress 700x30 which IMHO
are pretty large for a 700c *road* bike. They are a true 30mm wide unlike
many tires that measure much smaller than stated. (My 700x35 Marathon
Racers are not even 30) This is the maximum size on this frame due to
vertical clearance. There may be other, wider tires with a lower profile
that may fit, but the dimensions of the current tires are the max. Someone
commented that 30's are small for the Riv crowd. Define Riv crowd... Grant
has slowly moved from sporty versatile bikes to overbuilt all terrain
vehicles and commuter bikes.

Why am I selling: As stated in my original post, I own a Rambouillet.
It's a great bike but I find it a bit dead feeling. I acquired the Road
Standard in hopes that it would be the same as my Ram but more lively.
What I found is that its much more lively, a little too much so for
preference due to my weight. If I could split the difference between the
Ram and the Road, I would be Goldilocks.

Price: A new Waterford US built Rodeo (the most similar current Riv
offering) is 2300 plus a few moths wait. Two similar sized Rambouillets
(Toyo built in Japan, super high quality) have recently sold for ~1050 at
auction. I would consider this slightly more desirable than the Rams for
being US built and Rivendell branded. That said, I am reasonably negotiable
for a serious buyer. One poster commented that they thought the price was
out of line. That's fine and their opinion, but poor etiquette. If you're
honestly interested, PM or email me and we can discuss something that works
for both of us.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Best,

Ron

62 for a 60? I could do complete or just the frame set. Email me and we
can discuss.

could probably make it fit. Anyone interested in buying my Riv Road and
Rambouillet So that I can afford this beauty? :-)

[RBW] Short reach brakes with the most clearance?

2015-01-24 Thread rw1911
I'm trying to get the largest tires possible on my Road Standard. 30s fit
the frame, but the rear brake bridge is close (3mm) and unfortunately the
brake caliper is hitting the tire. (Campagnolo Skeleton) The reach to the
rim is fine, but I need more clearance at the top. In your experience,
which short reach brakes have the most vertical clearance?

(It's a shame the rear bridge is so low, because there is ample room to go
with larger tires everywhere else)

[RBW] Re: Derailer Cable Replacement Issues (Help a novice)

2015-01-22 Thread rw1911

First attempt at replacing my rear derailer cable. Using the same

lined up correctly under the smallest gear in back. Chain on smallest cog
in back and on small ring up front. Shifter all the way down when I insert
the cable. I am only pulling the cable by hand when I attach it to the RD
(Deore 9 spd) which has a groove for the cable. Having no luck getting it
to shift correctly. When I am shifting from the smallest to larger cogs,
once I hit about the 3rd smallest cog it automatically shifts back down.
If I go further up it does the same thing. Only when it gets in the
biggest rings does it stay put. I've played with the cable adjust thing on
the RD as well as the one at the cable stop (where downtube shifters would
go) in about as many combinations as I could think of and nothing seems to
 help.

Any advice as to what is causing it or would fix it? Do I need to have
the cable pulled tighter than by hand when attaching to the RD? If I push
on the cable about a foot or two up above the bottom bracket cable guide,
how tight should the cable feel (should I be able to push it and hit the
frame or should it be tight, etc???) About at the point to give up and
take it to a bike shop b/c I've spent too many hours for such a seemingly
simple task. Yes, I'm a beginner, but after watching videos, and reading
bike repair books, and even advice from Mark at Riv, I'm still obviously
 doing something wrong.

 Thanks In Advance

[RBW] under-sizing

2014-09-12 Thread rw1911
All of these recent Atlantis-for-sale posts have got me thinking of
building up an old school like mountain bike. i.e. smaller than what Riv
would recommend for fit. I recently sold an All-Rounder which I felt was
too big for me on anything other than light trails. My road bike is a 60cm
Rambouillet and it fits well.

I'm thinking something like a 56cm Atlantis with max (26x2.35?) tires.
200mm bullmoose bars to get the proper reach. There would be over 20cm of
seat post, but could it work? Anyone done it? Also, are the 26 wheeled
Atlanti 650b capable?

I own two very capable for my type of riding non-suspension mountain bikes,
GT Peace 9r's, one single speed and one geared. They have been
discontinued, but they are outstanding bikes for the money.

My thoughts were driven by the Riv aesthetic, but in maybe under-sizing is
not such a good idea after all.

With the exception of the Rivendell Mountain, the Legolas is probably the

[RBW] Re: Used Bike Pricing - General - Mindless.. Dribble

2013-09-08 Thread rw1911
I feel your pain. Buying is easy, selling sucks.

I have a Dave Kirk Terraplane, Joe Bell paint. An incredibly fine bike
outfitted with Campy Centaur alloy and a nice Campy wheelset. The last
time I checked, the frameset alone is 3800. It's not really an outlier
size (59/58.5) and I can't get close to the less than 3k I was asking. I
would rather stare at it sitting in my office than sell for less than
that... ~50% of cost.

On Friday, September 6, 2013 1:08:34 PM UTC-4, Kelly wrote:

So this is subjective and my opinion and thoughts. or questioning

I recently attempted half heartedly to sell a couple of bikes. Only
posted here and being 68cm I figured that since I was asking a fair to me
but not great deal on price it was a long shot on selling. Then I see a
68cm Orange RAM sell for 1300 or so bucks complete. My thought was this
guy is nuts... he should get that for frame alone. Then thought.. jerk
makes it harder to sell mine.. :)Anyway the way I have purchased and
looked at things are savings and value to me.

So if I get a frame and repaint it with total cost being roughly half of
new then I have essentially a new frame at 1/2 price. I tend to add 500 to
the cost of used frame in my mine for the repaint then take half of new and
 go from there. shrug.
The build or builds I do usually range in the 1500 to 2000 on top of the
cost of the frame. Sometimes less sometimes more.. (like why my RAM will
 never sell)

I also look at the 68cm frames as being rather special and worth more than
say a 56 cm or other common frame that fits 80% of the people in the world.
So tall people unless you want a got no reason song song written after
 you quit giving bikes away.
Note to person selling me the 68cm Atlantis .. disregard as this will be a
good feeling sell and giving away is OK this time only. (if only he was
 giving it away)

Anyway I would usually just buy new if savings aren't that great, but
since 68cm frames are far and few between one must get what they can.
Which seems to be my mistaken belief. That because they are rare, no
longer made, no other alternatives that offer the same benefits unlike
smaller frames... surly for example... that tall folks would covet and jump
at an opportunity to grab them up.

Back to me buying an Atlantis I don't really need since I didn't sell any
of my other bikes. Does it really fit, I've convinced my self that my
perfect number of bikes is 3. (4 if you add in a unicycle or is that 3.5)

Tour Bike = Bombadil - Albatross - SON28 New Dyno on front - Phil on
back - Velocity Atlas Rims 2mm straight gage spokes.
Event Bike = RAM - 48cm Noodles, SONdelux Dyno on front -Grand Bois
HIgh Flange Rear on Velo Orange Raid Rims with 1.8 / 1.5 double butted -
Rene Herse front crank triple.. sweet for me.. only bitch.. I miss my
 kickstand.
Day Bike = AHH(difference in the day bike and event bike is
bigger tires, fenders, racks and room for large saddle sack and camera
equipment... not to mention kickstand. Ideally replace this with the
 Atlantis.
Built up with New SON28 and White
Industries rear with Velo Orange Raid Rims. Lots of love for this bike..
been a go to for a long time. Century rides etc. None of my bikes have
taken on as many roles as the AHH!
I've toured with it. Built it as my
event bike and now have it as my semi tour day bike for photography. The
700x37 Panaracer tires are really comfy. Just is always right there to
fill in for any role I choose to set it up as.

So the Atlantis really isn't needed.. it's wanted for bigger tires the AHH
just can't fit.But since no one will buy what I have .. I need a role
for the Atlantis. If it carries the load as well as the Bombadil I would
add my bombadil to the sell list to get back to 3 bikes.
Some combination to fit the Tour / Event / Day Bike (go to bike so to
 speak)

My quickbeam rides alike a charm. I just don't ride it enough. I like
to ride my bikes not look at them or work on them all the time. They get
dirty and paint gets scratched. (thank god for ease or repainting)

So if I keep 5 bikes I need a unique role for each so they get ridden or
sell 2. Quickbeam of course. However I am not will to give them away..
(make sense?) (answer: not much of this post makes sense - drink or smoke
 something and try again)

Just thinking the Panracer 700x37 feel doggie and thinking about going
back to JB's ... may have to use it for a 60 miler on Saturday and see if
it's me or if they are just really comfy and smooth thus feel slow or if
they are really slow.. I'll find out while chasing friends.

The large saddlesack is such a dream bag.

Though I have a Luxos B - I like my edelux just because it completely
turns off when not in use.

[RBW] 7/19 BLUG broken Sam

2013-07-23 Thread rw1911
I may be naive, but just can't see how a *stick* could do such damage. I
haven't had the displeasure, but imagine it going something like... stick
gets sucked, front wheel locks, rapid deceleration, rider over bars and the
bike probably leaves the ground relieving the force on the fork. Perhaps
the extensive fork damage is the result of a post-stick, high speed impact?

Re: [RBW] WTB: Rivendell Rambouillet

2013-06-22 Thread rw1911
Patrick,

I can't speak for the sellers, but for me the Rambouillet is possibly the
best all around bike I have owned. Some have commented that it's
overbuilt, but at 6'2 230, it might as well be a skinny tubed rando bike
that so many rave about. I also own a lugged Dave Kirk Terraplane built
with modern Campy which is lighter/faster and a Match built 700c Rivendell
All-Rounder. (predecessor to the Atlantis)

The Terraplane constantly pushes me to ride faster and is great when I'm in
that mood. I find the All-Rounder a bit sluggish for unloaded, general road
riding. The Rambouillet splits the difference. It's relatively fast on the
road and more than capable on trails and fire roads.

A Roadeo might work as I have not had a need for racks. As Michael
confirms, I believe the Saluki is pretty close to the Ram/Hilsen in 650. I
have never ridden a Hillborne, but imagine it would be heavier/slower along
the lines or the All-Rounder. (and the DTT for my size prevents me from
trying one)

The only reason I'm looking is with an 89 PBH, I am at the top of the
recommended range for the 60 and the bottom for the 62. Even though I like
my bars well bellow the saddle, I think going up to a 62 might provide a
slightly better fit.

Michael,

Thanks for reminding me of a 62 out there that's not for sale. :-)

All this commerce in Rambouillets! I'd be interested to learn particular

I am beginning to think that the Ram, like the Atlantis and the Quickbeam,
is a definitive Rivendell, ie, it fills a particular niche (pavement, but
capable of modestly wide tires and fenders and of some light, firm dirt) in
a particularly Rivendellian way and therefore has a unique identity.
Perhaps the Roadeo fits this niche, too but is it as versatile while being
better on pavement? I wonder if the Sam is not more of a compromise -- not
hugely more off road capable, not as good on pavement. I wonder if the
 Saluki is a 650b Ram?

 Just thinking out loud.

[RBW] Re: All Rounder with Midge bar UPDATE

2013-03-15 Thread rw1911
Sweet bike. I have the 700c version.

About the Midge bars... Can you tell me how long of a stem you're using
relative to the stem you used with the Mustache? It sounds like a little
bit longer results in a slightly closer reach? What is your experience
riding on the hoods? Weird angle? Better/worse than a standard drop bar
hood position?

On Friday, March 15, 2013 8:15:01 PM UTC-4, jinxed wrote:

OK. So after some excellent and insightful RBW list input I went ahead and
ordered the OnOne Midge bars some Cane Creek levers, and some Kenda MTB
 tires.

My immediate goal was to alter the hand positions. I've been pretty
content with the mustache bar set up, but have come to really enjoy the
flats and wide sram hoods of my cross bike. My default position on the
m-bars was basically on the very ends with my palms hanging over the bar
end shifters. I thought adding the closer brake position and the flats of a
more traditional drop bar would be a welcome change.

As soon as the bars came in, I was happy I made the purchase, even if they
dont remain on the Rivendell. Right out of the box they looked
interestingly comfortable. NICE wide top flat section, short reach, tight
and short drop. They flair but not out of control. I had heard the drop
section was short, and it is, but to me seemed perfect.

I got them installed with a vacant stem so I wouldnt have to completely
disassemble my M-bar set up. The stem is a little too long, but the short
reach on the bar still pulled the levers back vs the m-bar. I set up the
Midge essentially parallel with the ground with the drops pointing down.
The levers then become a nice flat extension of the bar and make for some
good hand placement real estate! The flair on the midge is restrained
enough to still use the tops of the lever hoods. This is what I was looking
 for.

I also wanted to add some knobbage to the marathonesque bonty tires I was
using without going full on 2.1 mtb. I am VERY happy I ran across the Kenda
Klimax 1.9 tires. They were exactly what I wanted. Good enough knobs to hit
some aggressive singletrack, but civilized on the pavement.

So now in V.3.0 I took to the road so to speak. I did a nice meandering
30+ mile ride in mixed terrain to get some initial impressions. The extra
width and positions of the bars were very welcome in varying conditions.
Having the flats gave a nice upright comfortable cruising placement and
then the wide hoods were awesome in the dirt. I was so impressed with the
feel off road, I would consider these on my dedicated mtb. The drops worked
surprisingly well on the couple steep dirt climbs I encountered too. I had
quick access to the shifters without having to move away from reaching the
brakes. So overall I think this is a positive change.

 I will say this however...when you ride a 700c CX bike and a 29er
MTB...jumping on a 26 feels SO SLUGGISH. I kept checking to see if my
brakes were dragging! I kept wondering if I could shoehorn a 650b in there
and get some brakes to work! The AR is an awesome bike, but I will say that
my old too small Bleriot felt loads more efficient.

Here is a beautiful shot of the garage door with the newly altered bike
 obscuring the view.

Re: [RBW] Fit Issues with my Rivendell

2013-01-18 Thread rw1911
This is counter-intuitive to the assumption that higher bars equal a
better more comfortable position. I kept raising my bars in search of
comfort. I usually ride on the brake hoods and after many miles found the
drops more comfortable so I lowered the bars to 1-2cm below the saddle and
haven't looked back. I don't have an explanation other than if your saddle
is in the right pace, I think it relates to torso/arm/top tube length and
the angle in which your arms meet the bars in your preferred position.
(Which also affects the shoulders, neck and back)

Each person has different proportions and individual preferences. If going
up isn't working, try going down.

I have been using the Just Ride PBH-11=Seat Height fit method, and the

I have shoved the Brooks saddle all the way back Riv-style, which my

Now I just have to work out the low back issue and I will be good to go

I am gonna try the RivReader fist full-'a-seatpost method with bars
 1.5-2cm

[RBW] Re: Retrofitting a 2002 Road Custom - Tektro brakes and fat tires

2012-10-28 Thread rw1911
Looks pretty tight, but a nice bike that would probably be difficult
to give up over to a few millimeters of rubber. Look at it this
way... with only 3mm of clearance, it greatly limits the amount of
debris that could actually lock up a wheel.

How about some full bike pics?

eventually got what I asked for.  The bike was built originally built
with Campi brakes and 25mm tires.

Now - ten years later - I of course prefer fatter tires, but my foolish
notion that my brakes just had to be Campagnolo left inadequate clearance
for anything bigger than a 28mm tire... so today, we pulled off the
Campagnolo s/p's and replaced them with Tektro 538's, and squeezed in a
pair of Schwalbe Kojaks.  GP did a great job specing the bike, 'cuz the
Tektros fit fine, and the Kojaks (which measure out at 32 mm) just barely
fit - - albeit with only about 3mm clearance at the front caliper.

The bike was always nice, now it's just dreamy - nothing like fat tires to
make a sweet bike even better.

So thanks, Grant, I'm glad one of us had enough common sense to design a
 smart frame.

the drops.  If you like the 46 Noodles, you'll likely find the Rando's way
 too narrow.

That said, the 135's ramps and drops are both very comfortable.  I think
they are at their best when set high enough that the drops are viable for
long distance cruising and short, sharp climbs.  I have the Rando's on my
commuter, and find the narrow hoods to be fine, but I find anything over a
42 cm drop bar to be too wide.

If you want to try a bar with a bit more flare, consider the Salsa Cowbell.
It only comes in 31.8 mm and black, but It has a very nice flare to the
 drops.

Thanks Patrick,

If I'm understanding the specs correctly, the 136 would provide and
additional 15mm of ramp to move around on... and it looks pretty
flat? I'm most curious about the impact of the wider flare, when on
both on the hoods and in the drops. Examining photos, it also appears
the Rando has an upward sweep from the center/stem?

know you should -- keep the ends parallel to Mother Earth. But now find the
longer reach and shallower drop (115/125) Maes Parallels with longer ramps
 noticeably more comfortable.

Velo Orange sells a bar with the same reach and drop, tho' not as nice as

Believe it or not, we don't get much twilight here. Within 30 minutes of
those photos it was getting near dark. I would have needed the light to
make all the images I wanted of unboxing, building, first ride, and so on.
And, knowing myself well enough, I left things in the box so no shiny bits
 rolled away.

Indeed though, no shiny bits could get away. In the years since I got my
Quickbeam the packing skills at RBW haven't lessened a bit. The bike was
superbly packedvery, very safe and stable.

After morning errands I got to work on unpacking and within a couple of
hours (I'm slow and made images) I had a beautiful, and I mean beautiful
 Hunq put together.

I should mention that because I had the bike built for me, all I really had
to do was hook up the brakes, put in the stem, tighten the handlebars in a
reasonable position (amazingly I got it really comfortable on the first
try), put on the front fender and rack, add a saddle (Brooks B-17 Select),
screw on some pedals (the new Gripsters - great pedals really), and ride
 off.

Wow. Because I've got a couple of other bikes around I was actually able to
dial in the saddle after about 3 blocks. Then it was off for an around the
city waterfront ride. True it's all flat, but it's my city and I'll be
 riding these roads a lot

OK, so you got it late on Friday it's now afternoon there in Hawai'i
so I expect you're out riding your new bike.  Your initial ride report
is due to be posted yet today...remember: you are being watched!

So yes, it's afternoon and I'm back.

I hate to say this but when I first got my Quickbeam I thought it was the
best bike I'd ever ridden. Up to that point I was right. The Hunq is even
better (or maybe it's because it's new, eh?).

It really is a superb bike though. While I definitely want some 50mm tires
soon, the 38mm's were super on city streets with plenty of air to keep me
 comfy.

The Alba bars were a gamble for me. I'd ridden a Hunq at RBW back in May
and hadn't completely cared for them, but since they were part of the build
kit I figured I could swap later.

Nope, I love 'em. Wow. Yes, this bike is comfortable.

I stopped to make some images here and there...a wee bit of bike porn...and
continued around the city. I also stopped for an iced coffee because isn't
that really what a weekend is about? Riding and leisure. You just can't do
 better.

I did manage to find a few patches of rougher stuff to ride on, a gravel
filled alley, a cut across a park on a crushed coral path, a bit of grass,
and the Hunq handled it all very nicely. The Alba bars gave me lots of
control and the geometry of it all kept me comfortable. More wow.

I really like the bar end shifters as I mostly forget they are there and
 don't shift too much. :-)

Then it was home as I've got to clean up and go out with a friend for
dinner and birthday celebration. All in all I think put in about 10 miles
on my first ride and a good one it was.

We really are a bunch of dorks, getting excited about someone else's
new bike, looking a pix of the UPS truck arriving.  Maybe I should
think some more about that orange Ram in the Bay Area...

I've got much better images now, though I have to admit that the smiling
UPS guy really brightened my day yesterday. :-)

The photos are uploading right now to my Hunq set on Flickr. I don't have
time to label them all right now, but I'll get around to that later
 tonight. In the meantime, enjoy...

[RBW] Re: Hilsen = All-Rounder?

2012-09-16 Thread rw1911
My current wheels are Velocity Synergy rims with Shimano XT hubs and
db spokes. For tires I use either Pasela TGs or Marathon Racers. (I
can't decide which prefer) Both are 700x35. I imagine some zippy-
ness could be found maybe with lighter 700x28 tires.

What would be considered a zippy wheelset? Ultegra or Dura Ace hubs
and Mavic Open Pros or something more exotic? While widely available,
the problem I have is the All-rounders are spaced for a 135mm MTB bike
hub. I suppose I could crank down the skewer and use a standard 130mm
road hub, but I don't know if that would be OK or a good long term
solution.

[RBW] Issue mounting Marathon Racers

2012-05-19 Thread rw1911
I don't think it's me, maybe it is, but these are the most difficult
tires I have ever dealt with. Normally when I think of tires being
difficult to mount, they're really tight and require multiple levers
and a lot of force to get on.

My problem is the opposite. These things are so loose that it's a 15
minute procedure of getting the tire on the rim, a little air, check/
seat the bead, a little more air, repeat, repeat. So the tire is now
mounted and the bead looks evenly seated all around. I cruise down
the driveway and back up through the yard. Bang! the tire blows.

It's obvious the bead popped out and pinched the tube. I think OK,
I'll just throw in a new tube. Checking, airing, checking, airing.
The bead let's go at about 50 PSI and I just lost another tube, my
last spare and the local shops are closed tomorrow. I'm more than a
bit agitated/bummed.

Apologies for the long rant to get to this point... Has anyone else
experienced such difficulties with these tires? 35c Marathon Racer's
on Velocity Synergy rims.

[RBW] Re: Wide profile canti brake recs

2012-05-05 Thread rw1911
As others have mentioned, squeal is something that can normally be
adjusted. Shuddering (IME) is a result of a powerful brake, cable
stop and fork flex. My brakes are silent, but I do experience shudder

front fork flex rearward)

[RBW] Re: Wide profile canti brake recs

2012-05-03 Thread rw1911
I went from Shimano BR-R550's (which worked fine but had a fairly low,
fixed straddle cable) to Paul Neo-Retro front / Touring rear. the
Pauls are a thing of beauty if you appreciate mechanical / machining
type stuff and the straddle wire clears my Nitto Mini, but I find them
somewhat finicky to dial in. Maybe it's my amateur mechanic skills,
but it's very easy to lockup and skid the rear and the front is so
powerful that it flexes the headset hanger and fork to the point that
the front wheel shudders under hard braking.

Hey I saw a bike like that on craigslist. It was a little lacking in [*slur*]
and was missing a zero on the end of the price, but overall maybe a nice
adjunct if you're looking to buy another worthless piece of [*profane*]?
You'll still get to go through that same process of explaining that you
really wanted to get a CrMo frame (not because you're a legit, fit rider
who's riding a heavy frame for monetary or safety reasons, mind you...just
because $2000 seemed reasonable for not having to buy an authentic looking
 bike second hand).

I just got linked to this page from the Rivendell site because I was
horrified that someone (locally! In the 925!) makes money from selling bikes
that would raise eyebrows if someone was trying to sell it second-hand for
over $300. I'm never given to vandalism, but I would definitely wait by your
bike if I ever saw it until I could castigate you for willfully wasting
money on nothing. It's not a classic. It's not a whit more functional or
safe than the sub-$300 ex-touring steel bikes on Craigslist. It's not even
the good kind of ostentatious, like a Ferrari that can get you laid. It's
just aggressively meaningless. If I found that you weren't rich enough to go

pretentious. If you were, but weren't so darkly nihilistic so as to taunt

 I'd call you an idiot.

What if that's just you though? Respekt, you're a cold mofo and we should go

Wow... somebody's got issues.  I wonder if his car costs more than a few
thousand... you know, you can buy an old 50 MPG Geo for something like
$1000...  I responded with something like Thanks for the compliments, glad
 you liked my bike.  :-)

[RBW] Re: Was gonna buy a Riv but didnt...

2011-07-21 Thread rw1911
Apples and oranges.

A Kirk frameset will cost as much or more than a complete production
Rivendell.

That said - if someone is looking to spend that kind of money, a
custom Riv just becomes another option among the many custom builders.

As far as admissions, I bought my All-Rounder after my Kirk
Terraplane. The Kirk is an extremely nice bike, but lately I prefer
the AR simply because of how it's set up and the type of riding I've
been doing.

truth to this, if anyone out there will admit to it, and what the reasons

I got a Terraferma single speed instead of a Rivendell SimpleOne because I
 got tired of waiting.

[RBW] Re: Stem sizing for Albatross and Moustache bars

2011-07-02 Thread rw1911
Thanks all for the feedback. It sounds like I would need a very short
stem 6-7cm for the M-bars and probably a 12 for the A-bars...

All this talk of instability at speed has me now questioning the
Albatross, which I was favoring. Perhaps I should consider a
straight(ish) bar or maybe something with a little more flexibility
like the Jitensha bar (which appears to be an abbreviated, somewhat
cross between the two)?

FWIW, I have the Noodles just about level with the saddle.

Thoughts?

Problem there is getting them high enough. The tross bars came close on my
Hillborne, but there's something about those bars at speed that's
disconcerting for me.  I'll borrow the term squirrley. That's a good
descriptor. The at speed part got me to thinking the albatross might be a
good bar for a fixed application.  Hitting my top cadence in their upright
position was interesting to say the least. Also, I almost crashed when
reaching all the way down there for a bottle. All this has me fondly
remembering my more flexible lower back of years past.  I now have my 48
noodles a whopping 2 1/2 to 3 inches above my saddle and that is my mostest
favoritest set up for everything. I should note that the only bikes I have
that will allow this are my Rivendells.  Thanks Grant.

[RBW] Re: Small Saddle Bag- Nigel Smythe Keven's or Sackville Saddlesack XS?

2011-04-14 Thread rw1911
My Saddlesack XS just arrived Monday and I can tell you it's nice!

There has been a design change since the photos on the Riv site were
taken... the flap of the SS-XS no longer has the brass-twist closures.
It now has a double-ended zipper and a light loop on the flap just
like the NS. (visualize a green canvas NS with a leather flap and
reflective strip) Functionally, I think they're now pretty much
identical and suppose your choice will come down to material
preference.

I'll still consider it as one of my options.

Can anyone here who has owned either(or both) share their thoughts and

is made in England.  The Sackville Saddlesack XS costs $55 and is made

spend the extra dough if the Nigel Smythe tweed bag is worth the
 difference.

Thanks, ahead of time, for any help that you could offer.  Much

In my undefense, I have at one or more times in my life been more

Well, Reynolds had run out of them, and didn't even have the artwork.
Didn't even have the artwork! So I dug and called and came up with the
art, and reconstructed the decals with Reynolds's consent (I was
surprised they gave it, but hey).
Reynolds 753 is heat-treated 531. They heat-treated it and added two
to each number. The 531-- this is trivia -- refers to a 5:3:1 ratio
of alloying elements in the steel, (Manganese: Silicon: Phosphorous?--
I don't know). So, Reynolds used to say, don't call it 'five thirty-
  one'; it's 'five-three-one')
Today, 853 is heat-treated 631, following the same add-two formula.
Not all Reynolds tube numbers follow this. Reynolds 525 (standard
butted CrMo) when heat-treated becomes 725, not 10410. If Reynolds had
named 753  642 instead of 753, they'd have been able to maintain the
  add-two formula.

2011-02-06 Thread rw1911
Cannondale race bike Pinarello classic steel Kirk Terraplane
(still have it) Rivendell All-Rounder for pretty much the same
reasons.

On Feb 6, 1:25 am, Kelly Sleeper tkslee...@gmail.com wrote:
Well the change is almost complete to the point it feels normal, and
surprising.  I honestly didn't think many of the things I was changing would
stay with me.  I've ridden long enough to understand speed and sprints and
hurting and doing centuries all over the country remembering only the pace
line.  So I wasn't as sure about platform pedals, heavier bikes, larger
tires, sitting upright, and all the other stuff.

Well I have reference the joy several times.  Well the newness has worn off
a bit, the bikes have earned scratches and scrapes.  We bikes and I have
experianced snow, rain, dirt, mud, traffic and alone time on back pathes
along the rivers.  They unlike me photograph beautifully.

So after several hundred miles and on track for another 4 to 6 thousand mile
year the following is where I stand.

*Platform pedals* - Still the thing I most often consider changing ..
however everytime I thing about it I realize that 85% of the time I like my
grip kings and shoe choice and comfort .. not to mention my feet just aren't
as cold in regular hiking shoes.

*Wider Tires* - Ok on my tour bike I could understand 700x35's and enjoyed
them.  I would never have considered 700x35's for daily riding however
untill I got my AHH.  The JB lights have been fantastic and given me a great
fast ride.  (especially when I put some air in them) Then when I got my
Bombadil with 700x50 big apples and road some 30 and 50 mile rides I was
just amazed.  Yes they are slower, accerlation is slower.. but on a normal
social ride it hasn't mattered.  Thrilled.. I am one who will NEVER ride a
 700x23 tires again.

*Upright riding position-* My experiance had been on my older tour bike that
the more upright position meant my ass hurt sooner and was out of the
question for longer rides.  (nose up saddle position fixed this fyi) I
always believed an aggressive riding position distributed the weight to my
hands and legs etc causing less stress on my rear.  Also meant many miles of
base riding to get comfortable in that position for long 100 to 120 mile
 rides.

*Mental- *This goes with most topics but since I lost speed .. which I don't
care about or so I kept telling myself I was concerned.  I'm at the point
where to quote someone on here.. it's been fun per hour over mph thus I'm
enjoying a new chapter in riding and back to riding .. the bikes don't just
sit.. I don't dread getting on the bike anymore.  Sometimes change is good.
Please don't get me wrong.  The fast days were fun. I reached all my speed
goals and distance goals and extreme stuff for me.  I was burnt on it.

*Dyno Lighting *- I bought a SON28 and then put it on my AHH as a temp thing
with thoughts of taking it off during the summer and spring and such.  Maybe
putting it on a different bike for just night time runs to the store.  Well
I fell in love with it. It hasn't been off the bike and won't be coming
 off.  When I ordered the Bombadil I ordered it with a Son28.  I can't find a
reason to not run these hubs.

Peronsal opinion here:  I bought an Edelux light and then purchased the
supernova E3 Triple for the Bombadil.  Yes the supernova is super bright but
the Edelux does more than I need and gets to full brightness at 2mph or so
..if I had it to do over again I would purchase another edelux.. the beama
and the light are spectacular.  Just my opinion and it may change as time
 goes on.

*Lycra Spandex Free - *I am just as comfortable without it. I don't
understand it and am not going to lose sleep over it.  I honestly didn't
think I would last more than a few short rides.  Now I've ridden several 50+
and a couple of 60 mile rides where when I got home I was ready to go ride
more.  It's been a non issue.  The musa pants I purchased from Riv have been
very comfortable.   Ilike the olive with the velcro better than the blue
with the zipper legs for looks only.  The blue are less hassel for riding
actually.  I always forget to velcro the legs closed on the olive ones.
Hell I've done 30 mile rides in blue jeans on a new brooks b17.  I believe
it's the nose up saddle position that has changed things and maybe fit of
 bike??

*Bags- *Nigel Smythe - kinda says it all.  I used to use the fizik saddle
bag that slid into the saddle that would hold a tube and an inflater.
That entire bag would fit loosly into the side compartment of either of my
 Nigel Smythes.  Lovin it!

 *Bikes*
 **
*AHH *Regardless of having earned it's first gouge and being blown off the
kickstand a couple of times it is a joy.   Everytime I get on it I feel like
it's a part of me.  It's handled 40+mph downhills comfortably and has been
 nothing but stable.

*Bombadil- *I put a tubus nova lowrider on it then loaded up my panniers
 with 60lbs

While I think the RPC is really cool, the new paint is beautiful! I
would have never thought of dark brown with blue decals; but it's
unique and very nice combination.

I was originally considering Pea-Sage Green, seriously considered one-

a Rivendell after all, if a prototype.  Perhaps professorial?  The Riv

 Hello All,

My bike collection is becoming a bit more focused, and I'm finding the
Bombadil will be better suited in a new home.  Its a beautiful frame
that just did not get the use I hoped it would have.  The frame, bar
and headset are part of the sale.  The frame rates a 9.5/10 and bars a
 10.

 Pic's are here:

$1,700 plus shipping is my asking price.  Currently the set up would
 sell for about $2,500 new.

 Many thanks,

[RBW] Re: Tires.... what to buy

I like the Paselas. 6'2, 225 on 700x35 Kevlar TG. Nashbar has them on
sale from time to time.

Hi everyone, The time has come to get some tires for my new ride.  I've been
running a loaned pair of Schwable Marathon 700x32 @ 80-85psi from my

but I wanted something more supple. New bike = New tires right? I know I'm
giving up some puncture resistance for comfort, but I'm sure there is a
sweet spot out there!   I tried some continental gatorskins 700x28 (but they
were too skinny and made my bike feel unstable maybe it was all those miles
on the 32s?). I'm looking for an all-round tire, but most of my miles are on
pavement (I'd say 80%). I'm also planning on my first 200K and 300K this
 year!

From my research it looks like I've narrowed it down to:

 Jack Brown Blue's (I'm 6 ft 215lb so i don't think Greens will do)
 Pasela Wire bead
 GB Cypres

Thanks in advance for the advice! --Eduardo

[RBW] Re: Atlantis?

2011-01-05 Thread rw1911
Save for the color, it looks identical to my match built All-
rounder... including the lugs, braze-ons and badge. As far as tires
its difficult to tell from the photo, but I believe the AR used 26 up
to about 59cm and the larger frames used 700's.

Rivendell headbadge and downtube decal would suggest a custom. The
hourglass mid-fork braze-ons would suggest within the last 4 years, I
think.  That does seem to be a sage green which is a custom color, rather
 than the Atlantis seafoam green.

The other interesting bits are the simple lugs which do not have the shape
of the current lugs (though the back end on the top and down tubes seem
more complex). And I think those are the longer tips on the fork crown,
again suggesting earlier.  It might be an early custom with a repaint and
 some newer bits brazed on.

[RBW] Re: Help me figure out how many bikes I need, and how to configure them

2010-12-17 Thread rw1911
The Hillborne could do it all.

I've heard some negative things about the Bobike carrier... no
protection, mounting challenges, knee and body interference. Take a
look at the Topeak Babyseat II. While big and kind of ugly, it looks
like an easy on/off solution that uses a rear rack and appears to
offer some protection.

(Disclaimer: I have no first hand experience with child carriers (yet)
but have been researching options for the summer when my son is old
enough to ride along)

On Dec 17, 4:38 am, Earl Grey earlg...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi everyone,

since plenty of you seem to be snowed under with time on your hands, I
thought I'd tap into the collective wisdom to reconfigure my stable.

 I know that the answer to this question is n + 1, where n = current #
of bikes, and I am open to that possibility, but would prefer to keep
 n = 2 (not counting the tandem).

Here are my riding needs, in order of frequency/importance (btw, don't
 have a car):

 1. Commuting: 5-8 round trips a week, short (10-30 minutes) frequently
wet, occasionally in the dark. Fenders a must.

 2. Mixed road/dirt road rides, once a week, 3-5 hours (Jack Browns
work, but are a bit skinny for these rides). Fenders a must.

 3. Starting in 3 months or so, kid hauling as well as recreational
rides with kid, in a Bobike mini seat, mounted to the stem. Kid
hauling will be infrequent and short distance (to meet mom for lunch
at her office), and the majority of recreational rides with the kid
will most likely happen on the tandem, which is also being modified
for kid hauling duty. Should have fenders, though I wouldn't ride with
the kid if it was already raining).

 4. Occasionally the weekly ride is a 2-3 hour single track ride with
about 1 hour of road riding to get there and back. Would prefer no
fenders for this setup (two dirt rides ago my friend Paul got
something stuck between tire and front fender, and it wasn't pretty
(fender buckled, downtube scratched, though he didn't crash).

 5. Occasional brief tours (S24Os). Any longer tours would happen on
 the tandem.

 6. Occasionally need a visitor's bike for people of varying heights.

 Current stable:

 1. 2009 56cm Sam Hillborne, usually sporting Jack Browns, 42mm
 fenders, noodles, front basket, rear
 rackhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/25150...@n08/5185320523/

 2. 1990 17 Fisher Sphinx monster cross. Currently sporting 700C 35mm
Paselas 52mm fenders, porteur bars, rear rack. Relatively high bottom
 bracket.http://www.flickr.com/photos/25150...@n08/5242295929/

 3. 2008 Tank (Taiwanese brand) mtn tandem, sporting 26 35mm slicks,
fenders, rear rack. Extremely high bb, virtually no bb
 drop.http://www.flickr.com/photos/25150...@n08/5267816307/

 4. Other 700C tires in the stable: 42mm IRC Mythos CX Pro Slick (semi
knobby), 40mm Kenda Kwick Roller Ez Ride (smooth; coming soon).

 A) I have tried mounting the kid seat on the Sam with the noodles,
moving the technomic deluxe as high as possible, but am doubtful that
the kid seat will work with either noodles or moustache bars, unless I
get a dirt drop stem (My chest gets in the way of my kid's head).
Seems like the kid hauler will have to have porteur bars.

 B) I don't think I want to use porteur bars for recreational road or
off-road rides, especially with the horizontally short stem and
upright position that would be required for mounting the kid seat.

 C) The Fisher is too small to take the kid seat, I think. It has a 1
1/4 threaded headset, and tall stems don't seem to be available (not
sure that they ever were). Have purchased a Nitto stem riser to use 1
1/8 threadless, but even with a very tall stem (110mm, 35 degr.
rise), the bars are still too low for the kid seat. The only cheap way
to get this bike to have a chance to work as a kid hauler is to add an
insert to the steerer tube so that it can accept a 1 dirt drop stem
or some such, or to have a custom stem made.

 D) Would like my Sam to be set-up as my go fast, rather than the
 Fisher.

 E) Prefer to have the Fisher set-up as the trail bike (may get 50mm
tires for it eventually, which won't fit the Sam).

 F) Would like to try a 650B low trail bike one of these days.

 G) Would prefer a low bb bike for kid hauling, to facilitate getting a
 foot down at stops.

 Possible Solutions:

 I. Buy a VO Polyvalent, have 4 bikes: Sam go-fast/commuter, Fisher
trail bike, VO kid hauler/commuter, tandem family van. This way I will
get to try a 650b low trail bike. But buying a bike and having it
shipped to Thailand is an expensive proposition, especially with the
threat of a 60% import duty. I have no plans for a trip to the US to
bring a bike with me, which would avoid the import duty. Probably
can't afford this option right now, and car port space is already
limited. Financial outlay: $1700 or so.

II. Buy a Polyvalent, sell the Fisher. Solves the space problem, helps
 with the financial

2010-11-21 Thread rw1911
I'm fairly new to the world of Rivendell and the current Rambouillet
serial number thread got me thinking...

I have seen more than one report of Rambouillet right rear dropouts
cracking. Was a root cause ever identified such as a weight limit or
manufacturing defect? Was there a change during the Rambouillet's
production put in place to address this issue? If so when? (s/n
range, etc.)

(or is this a randomly occurring non-issue?)
