[RBW] 30 Days of Biking!

2020-05-01 Thread masmojo
Leah, I gotcha; I feel the same way most days, no matter the circumstances it's
always gratifying to humble a Fred. 

Paul, I did not know that about the nature area; I know not long ago the city
of Richardson bought the bit on the North end that butts up to Renner. I am
glad they did, maybe one less Panda Express or Academy. Dallas is getting
annoyingly big, I am pretty much a city boy, but at the same time it has to be
livable. When I moved to Dallas Central Expressway was 2 lanes each way & it
was bumper to bumper 80mph at 5PM. Then they expanded it to 4 lanes each way,
which was way too big in my opinion, but traffic was fine for 20 or so years.
Now it's back to insane & we really can't expand it anymore! On the plus side
bicycle infrastructure has increased exponentially! Yeah!

Well, I finished up with 337 miles for the month; pretty pleased with that.
Probably would have done 400, but early April was a bit rainy and we had a
couple cold snaps.

[RBW] 30 Days of Biking!

2020-05-01 Thread in Dallas nick
Masmojo,  looking at your GPS ride map I see we ride many of the same routes.
I often ride along the Renner Road trail to the little forest area at Plano Rd
and Renner.
My wife tells me that land was donated by the Hunt 'oil' family.
It's a wonderful area, so glad they preserved it from development!
I was noticing the Vee tires you have on your bike. You like them?
Two of my bikes accept 700x40's.

rob markwardt, I meant to comment on what a beautiful Rivendell you have and
that's a great background you have in the pic.

Re: [RBW] 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-30 Thread Roberta
Wow, everyone's stories and pictures just warm my heart and motivate me!
But, tonight it's storming and I don't like riding in the rain. Ann, I've
rarely seen a sky so blue. Leah, I'm impressed, but not surprised that you
went down part of that hill and up AGAIN to get in your 12 miles

For April, I did 17 rides. Not as much as many of you, but more than my
average summer month schedule. I guess my average summer month would be
3-4 rides per week, meaning about 12-16 for a month. So, I'm pretty
happy. My goal for May is more rides than in April, but it rains as much
in May as in April here (more than in Seattle).

Happy riding, everyone, in May.

So to that end, I went back to riding one speed Cruisers (OK a couple 7
speeders as well), but the point was, although I was on a light weight
cruiser (but portly by comparison) & very upright bike and I really didn't
have much chance to PASS anybody! This really dissuaded me from the urge to
chase and see how fast I could go, it also encouraged me to stop and smell
the roses (and have a Taco)

Nowadays I have a Groove; I know just how much I can put into the pedals
and A) make it comfortably to my destination B) Not punish my knees too
much! and C) not be a red faced sweaty mess when I got where I was going.
Still, it happens pretty regularly that I have some guy on a road bike come
blowing by me only to get about 50 yards in front of me and basically drop
anchor for several miles. That tells me one thing; I was the target of
some misguided overtaking maneuver! This kind of makes me roll my eyes,
but otherwise I find it amusing.

There's a guy who rides the Northhaven Trail, he must be 70. He's got his
kit on and a pretty nice road bike with 23mm tires; about 10 days ago I was
riding my Bombora just after I had put the tubeless tires on I had too low
of tire pressure so as a result was going slower than I should have been,
but at the turnaround I stopped to eat a granola bar, he came & turned
around headed back East. I started up going my normal pace when I came up
on him. at first I hung back figuring he was going slowly temporarily, but
after a while I just decided to go around him and I made some sort of small
talk as I went by just to be friendly. As far as I knew that was it, I
really wasn't paying any attention to where he was or if he was still back
there. Then about a mile before I turned off he comes up by me and says
"oh, I finally caught you" Since I really wasn't racing the guy I said "
hey, there ya go!" (Or something like that) Point is I may have 15 years on
that guy, but I also have about 50 extra pounds he doesn't have!!!
Additionally I've seen him there a couple more times and he seems to live
right close to the trail. It's an extra 6 miles for me to and from the
trail head.

Thing is if you are passing someone or they are passing you, the two of you
are not only on different bikes, but different schedules as well.

Leah, Congratulations on your "win" but maybe that guy was just finishing a
Century? Doesn't matter though as long as you got some satisfaction out of
it! ;-)

Re: [RBW] 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-30 Thread Leah Peterson
Me with drop bars rather unimaginable.

That would mess up my points system! I would only get points for beating men in
cycling kit on road bikes. See the key to my happiness is to be an unassuming,
unsuspected rival. An underdog. In stealth. Who is pretending this is her
normal speed and not a race. Because then winning is just really funny -
imagine Grant’s expanded geometry suuupeeerrr long 2019 Clem with the
tallest and shortest-reach stem that money can buy, so the goofy rider can sit
bolt upright, outfitted with front and rear racks and a basket- beating
cyclists in a race up a mountain.

But, I *am* getting lighter wheels for my Clem, which is kind of like getting a
Madone, right?

Leah, your story reminds me of the time I was stopped at a red light and a
young guy pulled up next to me and said “Good morning, SIR.” Rightly or
wrongly, this got my dander up and when he later turned up the same 7% grade I
was taking, I made damned sure I passed him on the way up.

Otherwise, not 30 days for me but close and staying ahead of mileage goal for
the year.

Man, and I've been rebuking myself for my own compulsion to speed up when I
see another cyclist in the distance. (This habit becomes less and less

There's a Trek Madone in your future.

Ridiculous winds!

20 miles with stops at Taco Casa & Aldi!

Saw a small snake; initially I thought it was a baby rattlesnake, but looking
at it more I'm not so sure. Maybe there's a Herpetologist in the group?

2020-04-28 Thread Andrew Erman
Roberta,

I was reading a little about the safety value of the Tigr lock - some of what I
read was not favorable. I use my Tigr lock to secure my front wheel because I
don’t want to be bothered with removing it for locking. Good luck with this!

Thanks, Roberta! That is very kind of you. The Tigr sounds like it could
address your goal of lightening your bike. I have played around with the idea
of putting another Tigr lock on my Clem and leaving the Albus at home unless I
need it to lock my bike and my wife’s together. My Clem is a little beat up so
I am not so worried about my inefficient lock fiddling marring the paint a bit.

2020-04-26 Thread Roberta
Ha, ha!

I also have an Arbus lock (2 actually), but I'm so afraid of getting my
bike stolen. I'm down 5 pounds since our self imposed internment, but it
doesn't seem to want to budge from there. Congrats on your accomplishment.

My issue is lifting the bike onto trains, buses, cars racks, carrying it up
and down stairs, etc. If I know I'll be doing that, I carry a backpack and
put the locks and water into the backpack. Voila, my bike just got 5 pound
lighter! Although still heavy for me.

I'm glad you're posting. Welcome.

Re: [RBW] 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-26 Thread Andrew Erman
Roberta,

On the plus side, the Tigr lock is light. I needed some practice to easily
get the locking device off the lock and then to reinstall it - still working on
that. I have had a learning curve to get the lock thru my seat stays and
spokes, and to do it in a way that I don’t bung up the paint. I have the
bigger version of the lock but it is not long so I have get my bike very close
to the object to which I will lock my bike. Therefore, I look for skinny
things to lock my bike. I have an Albus u-lock on my bike which is rated very
well. It is very easy to use but heavy. I decided to lighten my bike by
losing 19 pounds off my body.

Best,

Andy

LOL, Paul, those flats are Rothys, made from plastic water bottles, but I wish
they were rubies!

I’m envious of your trees - we don’t have big, beautiful trees like that here
in the desert. It’s one of the things my northern heart aches for the most.
Trees and water.

Yep, we called it the river bed in LA. I remember it as a very isolated and
spooky place when I was a kid, but that may reflect on what LA/Long Beach was
like as a whole in the '70s. I saw that pic of Leah trying to walk down into it
and I was like, "Don't go in there, Leah!"

[RBW] 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-25 Thread Roberta
Thanks Paul.

I removed the Avocet Touring II that I bought NOS in November and put the
original stock saddle on my She-Devil. If I end up not liking that one, I’ll
try the Origins 8. The Avocet is not quite right for me and I’ll be selling it.

So, with all the excitement of the new fancy Chev, I did THREE rides today,
starting and ending with my She-Devil, which looks like a distant cousin to the
fancy Chev, but more compact!

First ride was 5 miles around the city in the bike lanes. Philadelphia now has
bike lanes on the left on some one way Streets. On the way home, I stopped by
LBS to add Myrrcycle mirror to the right handlebar end to match the one on the
left. “OK, we’ll have it done for you in 45 minutes “

Hmmm... 4 minutes to walk home, and 4 to walk back, with 35 minutes between. As
soon as I got home , I jumped on my Joe Appaloosa for another 5 miles ride. I
love that bike, and am looking forward to improvements I’ll be having Analog do
for me.

I then picked up my She-Devil and took it directly on another ride-6 miles.
It’s not a Riv, but it’s nice, and there’s something wonderful about riding a
mixte. So much so that I think I’ll be ordering the new fancy Cheviot

I forgot to answer Roberta's question on what saddle I had.
It's one by Origin8.I think it's called the Sport Uno.
I double checked the measurements to make sure they were close to a Brooks B17.
I like the brown color and the comfort and have 3 of them as I cannot justify a
B17 on every bike.

More nice photos; you seem to have a knack; are you a photography buff? My
own attempts, iPhone, are generally poor, especially if not in bright
sunlight. Perhaps I need a more fancy iPhone -- trying to keep my 5S alive
as long as possible, for reasons of principle as well as because I hate big
phones and the 5 is the last of the small ones (have 6S waiting in drawer,
unused).

Las Vegas seems pretty well appointed and tidy for a desert town.

I rode today -- fun! fixed gear and wind to 32 mph; I do like it; and I
like hills too, but this route has just "hill-lets" -- but didn't bother to
take pictures of the Paseo and North Diversion Channel trails (Montano to
Rio Grande trail to Paseo trail to NDC trail out to Balloon Park and
return, 17 miles. Got home in time to go to store, take dog for a bike/run,
and do more work).

[RBW] 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-22 Thread masmojo
The whether played havoc with my day. Storms were supposed to roll in mid-day,
so the plan was to get up & ride before they got here.
Upon waking I realized it was already raining, so I figured my day was screwed.
Sputtered around the house, changed out some track lights, did some futzing
around with bikes.
At this point I realized the rain had stopped, but it was really humid! Not
encouraging!
Then around 6:30 I started thinking I'd been a slug all day & I should get my
ass in gear!
Grabbed my Kona A'HA cruiser with the intention of 6ish easy miles, but as is
my inclination actually went double that. I know many of you may be thinking
"Mas, this is a Rivendell forum, but none of your rides are on a Rivendell!"
Yes, I am aware that, I've been riding everything but ...
There's a good reason; my Atlantis was 6 bikes into a 8 bike stack against a
wall and whenever I went to fish it out, I would inevitably get distracted by
some other shinny object, before I got to it & ride that instead!
But, last night I reorganized and the Atlantis is now near the top of the stack
so I'll be riding it very soon!
I didn't ride it this evening, because I was only going a short distance; I
prefer the Atlantis for longer distances so I rode the A'HA, which was just
below it in the stack against the wall and was also needing some Love.

@Andy: Welcome, Andy! As Masmojo points out, the Albastache is usually
mounted other way round -- the benefit being a much more comfortable hand
position in the curves.

@Leah asked what it takes to work your core on a bike. You pulled on those
handlebars, effectively doing squats and sit-up simultaniously. That'll do
the trick. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Now THAT’S a grocery run. Nice work! Very cool that your wife joined you for 30
miles - I had to trick my husband into 7 miles AND he has an ebike. Where did
you go for 60 miles and how long did it take?

200 miles for the month is awesome. I rarely hit that number.

I am also amazed at the numbers of bikes out on the roads and trails around
here. Really cool to see, also, I’m learning to share.
