Hey Eric, I’ll counterpoint and say it is worth experimenting with gearing, but also point out that you can, with wide range flip-flop hub freewheel/cogs and two same or even wider ranged chain rings (so long as the total tooth difference is 6 or so, I know it is technically 8, but that can make 38s snug). Then you only run the big cog with the little chain ring and the little cog with the big chain ring. Two wide ranging gears. Simplicity of the original bike. Best of all possible worlds. Grin. This is the thingey you need to hang the derailer/tensioner..Jim used a derailer that had one built in. This is also intriguing. I have a wide low on there already, am a lazy shifter, and really only need a main and granny for most riding. Not insane at all. I’m the somebody, and it worked well. I feel the same way and am eventualy, absolutely, buying a sturmey archer IG hub for my QB. I can't help with the frame mod idea too much, but I did convert my Quickbeam to an IGH 3-speed. I agree that the QB has a special ride quality that I can't quite explain. The word that keeps coming to my mind is "glide". With fenders and the 3-speed gearing, it serves as my city bike and stays in my office. Best wishes on your project. I'll be following with interest. Somebody in an old Reader put a derailer claw on his QB and attached a beater Shimano 200GS derailer, which then allowed him to use a wide-low 2-speed crank. This is similar to the setup on my Pashley Clubman: I use a Paul Melvin tensioner, 40-26 cranks and a front derailer. You could do this with a triple crank, too, which would give you a pretty decent gear range without modifying the frame. You'll need a cable stop for the front shifter cable, too..Riv sells them. Someone makes cassette hubs for 120 mm OL rear ends, on which you can fit (I think) 5 of 7 7-speed cogs, 6 of 8, and so forth. Or, get an old freewheel hub and buy one of the never-wil-disappear 5 speed freewheels floating around. In an early RR, Grant described Lon Haldeman's custom Riv Road, which had a multiple cog rear cluster than Haldeman shifted by hand -- ie, no derailleur or shifter. On my '99 fixie Riv Road custom, I have a 15 t cruising gear on 1 side (76") and a 17/19 Dingle on the other (67" and 60"). Not low enough for serious off road, but with the SOs long "dropouts" you could get a wider spread. It would seem regrettable to permanently alter a bike you like so much in its original form. So, I've been pondering something lately... As I've mentioned a number of times in various discussions here, I'm completely enamored with my SimpleOne. It's the best bike I've ever ridden. But I lack the legs of Deacon and require gears for some of longer mixed-terrain rides I do (although I'm seriously interested in learning more about his floor living ideas...but I digress). Recently, I've been toying with the idea of tracking down another SO or Quickbeam and having a frame builder convert the track ends to run-of-the-mill dropouts and spread the rear end to accommodate the 130mm cassette wheels I already own. Is this idea insane? Blasphemous? Would it be possible (or advisable) to spread the rear that far? Would it make more sense to just have a custom built? I can't really afford $3500 for a Riv custom and don't know the tubing specs (which I imagine are as important as geometry). And even if Riv were willing to divulge those details, it would be unethical to get that info and then have someone execute Grant's exact design for cheaper.
