[RBW] Re: Low Normal Derailers
I have a low normal RD on my LHT used with friction downtube Simplex shifters and 8speed cassette. I have said here before that the 8 speed shifting is too easy, and I will likely replace it with 9speed when I wear out this chain. I do like it on a touring bike; if the cable ever broke it would rest in the large cog for easy (yet slow) 3speed pedaling to the next bike shop. I agree it takes a minor mental shift (pun intended) to get the shift I want, but its no real mental effort. Its my only bike with friction shifting so its the 'normal' now. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Low Normal Derailers
I used one with Silver bar-end shifters and never quite overcame the ingrained memory from using Suntour Bar-coms but it did shift crisply. I tried one on a bike with down-tube shifters and changed back to a high-normal RD after one ride as I couldn't do my normal one-handed double-shift at all. I do still have a long and a short-cage version of each in my parts box for a future project! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Short cage, so I'm safe. Have a few 32t cassettes, but mostly am slowly migrating to 36t. Then again, don't think I've had a short cage derailleur since the early 1980's. [RBW] Re: Low Normal Derailers
I haven't had much trouble switching to low-normal from regular sequence derailleurs.I even have both types on different bikes and switch between them frequently. After the first couple of shifts, I no longer have to think about it. Bikes are otherwise set up differently though so maybe that has something to do with it. Re: [RBW] Re: Low Normal Derailers
I remember Benelux! I had something like the Standard on my second bike build, circa 1971 or 2, a Varsity (stripped and painted) with a new drivetrain consisting of an AW with two oppositely-dished cogs tack welded on the driver and the Benelux, found much to my surprise in a Nairobi shop -- most carried only Indian roadsters -- shimmed out to accommodate the 1/8 chain. It worked fine on the 2 cogs. I junked the 50 t ring and left the 40 and overall the system gave good ratios. I suppose the Alvit would have worked even better, but I junked it because the chain kept skipping, which I attributed to the Alvit. It was probably just a very worn chain. There was talk shortly after their discontinuation, of a possible alteration that could be made to high-normal ones (a relocation of how the spring pulls) to convert them to low-normal, in order to maintain them as an option, but, there were issues in doing such, and they went away. So, a lot of Rivs have them, up until the past year or so. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I have XTR low-normals (also known as rapid rise) on two bikes, and given a choice I wouldn't use anything else. I do have two other bikes with normal shifting (not enough low-normals to go around right now), but it's not an issue to go back and forth - they all have different kinds of shifters anyway. I suspect that if the low-normal style had been developed first, nobody would have bothered with the other way. What's the point? Re: [RBW] Re: Low Normal Derailers
I've used the LX version. Think one of my bikes has one. (Maybe two). Hard to remember, as each has a different shifter. I like it. But if things were switched out for a normal derailleur, probably wouldn't notice. Wish they had kept them in the lineup, but can understand the folks who don't like them really don't like them. [RBW] Re: Low Normal Derailers
I used one for seven years on my recently decommissioned commuter. It required direct and applied concentration to overcome decades of riding experience to run it right, symmetry of levers' movement or not. An interesting footnote is that the low normal derailleur springs pull the cage and pulleys to the biggest cog at rest. I have ha\d to replace the jockey wheels twice during its service, and I am talking about the pulleys gone wobbly and wonky, not tooth wear. I have never experienced that before. My hypothesis is that the natural and resting mode is to pull against the larger cog; force applied from the chain on the pulley wheel teeth to the lateral, stressing the bushing function and integrity. I am frankly amazed it shifted at all when I first saw and appreciated the level of debility. I'm talking upper pulley able to cant at 30° off chain line. New commuter has a normal RD. The wiring to operate that is very deep in my CNS and I can ride almost as a complete reflex, absent of any focussed thought. Perfect for the end of my 12-14 hour days riding home in the dark.
