Thanks, Kim! The pedals are Shimano DX PD-MX30. They're MTB pedals from I
think 2010 or so. They have removable pins and the part of the pedal body
where the spindle goes through is nice and concave...a must for me. I first
got a pair when some were donated to the shop I was working in and now
they're my absolute favorite pedals of all time!

2022-02-20 Thread Rick Urbanowski
FYI I have the exact same bike. When I bought it, it had albatross bars on
it and it also came with a set of drops. I left the albatross on there and
they are working out just great. I can ride very upright and I have zero
neck pain now thanks for that. I even did a century last October on it.
Just a thought.

Not a real off road aficionado here, but yeah!

I think there's a balance to be struck between tracking and "responsive"
steering in bike design, but so far I've been super happy with off road
riding on my LWB Appaloosa. Not *feeling* any loss on the manouverability
front.

Still learning its quirks and movements and have definitely pushed it to
what I thought would be its limits (dirt tracks and sand) and yet it

One thing I notice when riding it off-road and things get a little sketchy
is the lng wheelbase gives you a lot of time to recover if the rear
wheel starts to wash out. It also seems to track very well and just plough
through sandy sections of track. Have never experienced anything like it.

Re: [RBW] Re: My first Rivendell!

I have yet to find a detailer or brakes that outlast shimano's 7 speed
Deore DX line. I certainly don't hesitate to pull them off thrift store
bikes and pop 'em on my fancy bikes. They even work fine with my very
modern shifters (caveat, I never got more modern than 8sp indexed downtube
shifters, but it sounded good).

Seriously though, those things are going to outlive me. I have quite a few
DX hubs still running fine (one got a surly fix-r and is now a fixed gear).
I can live quite happily without Dura-Ace, Red, Record, etc. Give me the
good stuff that works and lasts.

Those silver sun-tour front hubs Riv sold for something like $10 about 20
years ago are still humming along and looking great.

[RBW] Re: My first Rivendell!

2019-02-21 Thread OwenS
Oh I definitely meant 'cheap' in the pure sense of cost only. Very cheap
when you compare the Altus derailleur with my previous bike's SRAM Shadow
clutch derailleur. Did the SRAM change gears any better? *Nope.* Did it
costs like 8 x the price?
*Yep. *

I'm kinda pissed that the general bike industry has drip fed me information
around which components I needed as a 'serious cyclist'. I think the whole
Shimano/SRAM hierarchy of components is almost total garbage. Categorize
components in terms of weight or use-case, not some imaginary metric of
'betterness'.
*"Oh no don't get the Altus, the Claris is much better. But not as good as
Tiagra. What you really need is 105". *

I feel free in so may ways now. I wish I could thank Grant directly but I
have no idea how to get in contact with him.

I'm not sure it's fair to characterize all the components as "cheap" which
often implies poor quality as much as it does low price. If it came with
the stock Silver crank, for instance, those sell for $220. Not outrageous
by today's bloated measures, but not cheap. And a fine crank. The bars are
Boscos--70 to 95 dollars; my first gen came with Bosco bullmoose, the

I think the seat tube is 31.8mm. Wanted to do the complete build through
Riv, so I went with the CX70, which I have no complaints about. In the back
of my mind, I knew I could grab something vintage off eBay and throw it on
there if I wanted to. Mainly I knew the second the bike arrived, I would
want to be out riding it and didn't want any downtime if something didn't
work out. Will leave everything as is for now.

YMMV.   I love the look but hate the feel.

I used "non-aero" (at the time, we just called them "brake levers")
levers on my 64 Dunelt, and for 20 years on my P15 Paramount.  I
switched to aero style levers in 1991 and haven't braked from the drops
since.  It's all brake from the hoods except for the bikes with 'cross
levers under the bar top.

When I got my Moulton in 2002 I built it up with non-aero levers and
found the braking from the hoods totally unsatisfactory - far too much
effort required, and the best I could get was as Sheldon has it,
"gentle".  I switched the bike to aero levers and wouldn't consider the
old-style levers again, never mind how nice they look.

On 11/29/18 6:14 PM, 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch wrote:

I find the "difficulty braking from the hoods on non aero brakes" to be much
Ado about very little. Anybody with fairly reasonable hand strength can pull that lever
toward the handlebar from either position. The brake doesn't know where your hand is. I
wonder if maybe there were levers way back in time that were extremely hard to pull, and
that's where this truism came from. I brake from the hoods on non aero brakes all the
time with zero issues.

Re: [RBW] Re: My First Rivendell... Meet my Leo Roadini and I.

2018-11-29 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I find the "difficulty braking from the hoods on non aero brakes" to be much
Ado about very little. Anybody with fairly reasonable hand strength can pull
that lever toward the handlebar from either position. The brake doesn't know
where your hand is. I wonder if maybe there were levers way back in time that
were extremely hard to pull, and that's where this truism came from. I brake
from the hoods on non aero brakes all the time with zero issues.

The pivot is located in a different place, and you have a lot less
leverage than with the aero style.

/Æro levers are generally an improvement over the older type. The
pivots are located differently, making it possible to get fairly
serious braking from the position where the rider's hand is on top
of the lever hood. Non-æro levers would permit the use of this
position for gentle deceleration only.   --

Congrats! It was a tough decision between the XCD, VO, and Rene Herse. I'm
happy with the SunXCD. I wanted all silver components which made it tough
too and being that SunXCD had the RD, that helped sway my decision toward
the cranks too.

Re: [RBW] Re: My First Rivendell

2018-04-23 Thread Tommy Patterson
Hi Bruce, nice meeting you too. Perfect weather for a nice, long ride. And
your bike looked great also!

A guy in front of me went down and I made a quick swerve to miss him. In
doing so, my rear wheel locked up. Initially I thought that the wheel
jumped out of the dropouts and was buzzing my frame, but as soon as I got
to looking at it I noticed that it was seirously out of true. I called the
SAG support and while waiting I saw hairline cracks on every drive-side
spoke eyelet! I had just had the wheel trued and this was the first ride on
it, so I am wondering if the mechanic over tensioned the spokes leaving it
prone to failure 樂. The wheel is being laced over to a new rim (at another
shop!) and I should be back on it in a week.

Thanks for the motivation to join the local rando group, I'll do my best to
link up with them once I am settled into my new place in NOLA.

Correct, it measures 62 and it is a somewhat sparkly green. It really
shines in sunlight so I'll have to post another picture of it soon. I live
in southern Mississippi and I am about to move to NOLA where an 11-23 is
all I need with 50-34 up front. I often visit family in western NC where
I'll use more mountain friendly gearing.

Looks like a narrow-range cassette on it. 36-50t large cog, wide-range

that it looks so small to me. But hey, if it works then you're golden.

[RBW] Re: My First Rivendell

2017-09-18 Thread REC
Paul,

Congratulations on your first Rivendell! I bought my first riv--Joe
Appaloosa-- 5 months ago and could not be happier. Now, riding is 100%
pleasurable with 0% pain. Love the upright-ness. I was contemplating a
Clem; it's a nice ride and you got a great color.

Hope you have lots of good miles on it.

Roberta

I recognize that turnout. Rolled past there 6-7 years ago! Good thing you went
south, going north is usually into the wind. Beautiful ride there, and great
looking bike!
