I think these came with a nitto F15 rack. Try searching for that, as
several have sold here.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Question?

2021-09-14 Thread Collin A
Ben,

Answers below:
1. Mine was not squeaky, but it sounds like it quiets down later.
2. I got used to it eventually, but it helps to have softer things in the
bag that your thighs can move into (rather than something super hard and
stiff). Alternatively, having a marks rack (or similar to angle the bag
slightly away from the seatpost resolves the thigh rub if it really bugs
you.
3. Like Patrick, I like my connections tight, which is why I replaced all
of the leather straps with voile nano straps of a bright orange color. I
used the stock straps for a while and noticed they do stretch a little with
age, so if you wanna keep the leather, just give it a few weeks of tugging
and stretching and no new hole would be needed (unless the hole is like 2
cm too short).

Enjoy the bag, I love my bag boy royal quite a lot and it works super well
thanks to the boxy shape for groceries, work stuff, camping, etc. But my
wife stole it so I am currently sackville-less!

[RBW] Re: Sackville Question?

2021-09-14 Thread Ben Mihovk
Hey Joe!
Thanks for the response...really appreciate it.

1. Good to know...I don't need silence, I was just taken aback by the
squeaks!
2. I think thigh rub will be less of an issue once I ride more than a
block...not going to worry too much about this.
3. Good idea! I have some of those velcro straps! My front fender was
velcro strapped to the back one when it shipped from Riv.

Thanks again!

Re: [RBW] Re: Sackville Sacks are a good deal

2021-05-06 Thread Pam Bikes
I got some grey back a bike bags. The bungee is hard to do on a large
rack/wheelsize but doable on my 26 in wheel w/rack. I still had to pull
hard to cinch the buckle. It's easy to take off but harder to put on.
Bags are great. They swallow so much stuff!

2021-02-08 Thread Ben Mihovk
No doubt!

I adore the handmade bags that some other really cool companies put out
(particularly Swift Industries), but the Sackville stuff is (to me) better
looking overall and unquestionably a better value.

I just wish the Backabike bags would come back soon...the longer they
remain out of stock, the more reasonable $400 for a pair of Swift panniers
seems.

The material sourcing probably changed, almost inevitable over time these
days. Also, there are significant variations in the canvas "feel" based on
color. This was noted some time ago either on the blagh or in the
descriptions. The blue was stiffest, the gray (not the light grid gray) was
floppiest. Brown and olive at the time were in the middle somewhere. No
idea where it all stands now. I imagine the leather will get more supple
with use, and it will all be fine.

Thinking more clearly, I have to say that my perception is right. Much more
recently, about 2 years ago, I owned and used well a second hand, first-gen
Large Saddlesack, and yes, I recall the the canvas being thicker and the
straps being more supple; no "rough graininess" on the straps that cinch
flap to bottom buckles.

FWIW, I've used all varieties of Carridice Nelsons, Campers, and Juniors,

Rivendell lists the dimensions as 7 x 9 x 5 but neglect to say if the 7 & 9
are width & depth. At the end of the video, the on-the-bike shots it looks
deeper / longer than wider, judging by the fit on the saddle.

Is the bag just a bit longer than wide? Might be just what I need.

Bagboy's nice as a front bag too, if you're looking for versatility, but
it's not huge. Happisacks look to be huge enough for most stuff, maybe even
a good front bag for the leather barred/towel racked amongst us.

Thanks!
They are tiny USB lights(front and back), I ordered from Blue Lug in
Japan. Also running a PB SuperFlash in the rear.
The light output is not exceptional. Two settings, on/flash. Good to "be
seen" in the city and not blind the other folks in the bike lane, but if
you need to ride where there aren't streetlights, you need some bigger
iron.
I also keep one mounted on the dropout on my Steamroller as a backup light
that I don't have to worry about and its too obscure/low to steal, they are
threaded on to the bolt on mount, see pictures in the link.

I really like mine too, Joe. On Beorn (GBW), those long chain-stays require
longer rack stays. I have a third more rack showing out the back, which is
perfect for strapping on my tent, sleeping bag, and pad behind the sack. If I
wanted to go ultra-light, I could bike pack with just that and no panniers.

With abandon,

I’d like it more if the D-rings were positioned in such a way as to allow
carrying off the bike via a shoulder strap. The Small or the Medium could
benefit from that as well and would see a ton more use in my case. Just park
the bike, detach bag, put over the shoulder and go to the office / meeting /

[RBW] Re: Sackville Banana Sax

2018-02-12 Thread islaysteve
Based on my experience with my old Banana Sack (made by Duluth pack), I'd
say you will be fine with your intended use. Mine will carry: an
innertube, tools in a pouch, wallet, light jacket and an Abus cable lock,
like Riv sells. If the lock is carried, it should go in first. Looking at
the pictures on the site, the new one may be a wee bit larger, so better
still. BTW, I modified mine to fasten the flap with shock cord very much
like the new Riv design. It is much more convenient than the single buckle
style of the old ones. Interesting that Riv went to the two straps
perpendicular for mounting. I can see that it will be easier to mount and
dismount than the old threaded-strap style. One of these days, I'll be
tempted to replace my old one with a new gray for my Bleriot. Cheers, Steve

[RBW] Re: Sackville Saddlesack Large or Medium?

2017-04-09 Thread dstein
I've had them both. The medium fits a ton and I prefer that for everyday
use (commuting and bike camping (but I don't do a lot of heavy duty grocery
getting or any errands like that). Nice thing is that even for an S240 you
can get a lot in there and bulge it out for some extra room. All depends on
what else you have for storage. I find a medium saddlesack with a front
shopsack--or even better some low rider panniers (I use the har
ones)--really balance out the weight, that way you're not too tempted to
put too much in the large and overload it. My hunqapillar gets a lot of
shimmy from overloading a rear saddlesack.

Or you can take my route which is to buy them both, find out which one you
like, then sell the other one at a slight loss. I find Rivendell products
hold a good amount of value especially if barely used. I now look at fancy
bike and bike part purchases as a rental fee with a large deposit ;)

Great points, Joe and John! John, that lithe bag is THE perfect pannier for a
Brompton. Too cute.

I meant to stay with the tan color I already have, but I liked the gray best

like a clutch/handbag than the bar tube does. There is nothing better than
buying a new Rivendell bike, but second to that is buying new bags for a
Rivendell bike. I cannot wait.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Multisack

2017-03-03 Thread Surlyprof
Leah,

I bought one recently to use as small pannier on a Brompton for
foldability. (
https://www.flickr.com/photos/129545862@N03/albums/72157676942696083
)

Really nicely built and detailed (leather details, pockets and connection
points on bottom and both sides for lots of fastening versatility). Good
looking, too. I found it to work really well for a Ulock and my lunch
(5"x5"x1.5" container and some other things). I just used it yesterday on
my Hillborne's Albastache bars. It connected pretty well but would
probably work even better on bars with less curve such as Boscos, Chocos
and Albatross. The one thing I would consider doing is swapping out the
buckle straps for something with an easier release such as snaps, fastex
or, dare I say, velcro. With a phone an wallet in it, it would be nice to
be able to just pop it off when I wanted run into a store or coffee shop.
I always liked that detachable pocket feature on the medium and large
saddlesacks.

2016-05-05 Thread Adama
Considering this piece for my every day carry, so I'm resurrecting this
thread to solicit any more feedback from folks have after used the ole
jumbo grabby. Thanks for all the reporting thus far. Seems like it's
fairly split between works good enough for me to a slipping shoulder strap
is a deal breaker. Pics and poetic waxings of beausage welcome, as are
screeds re: where it's missed the mark.

2016-01-17 Thread Dan A
I am not as happy with the bag as you Liesl, it has one critical flaw --
the shoulder straps slip a lot. Any weight in the bag and they slip, I
have tried various threading and hacks and while some help they still slip.
While the quality and size of the bag other than the straps is great, the
straps are a killer for me - they thread through plastic that just doesn't
grip -- metal would have been much nicer.

I know this gap you speak of. I bought the Grabsack a week or two ago and have
been using it as a cross body purse. I love it. But I did NOT love that gap. If
you open the flap, you'll see the bungee cord is knotted. If you make another
knot to shorten the bungee cord, the gap disappears! This will render your
Grabsack the perfect bag. Easy peasy.

Hi Peter,
I've just ran out of gray fabric, but can always get more. The gray rando

I do have a Carradice-style bag that I've made for myself:

[RBW] Re: Sackville gray vs Berthoud gray?

2015-09-20 Thread Peter Adler
Even if another vendor/manufacturer could source the same fabric
type/color, the only way to guarantee that the materials are identical
matches is to buy from the same production run. Even the most anal of
manufacturers have variations in materials and dyes between productions.
Black is the worst; it's very difficult to get blacks to match when you
take yardage from different dye lots. You either get Zen about it, or you
plan ahead and get enough yardage upfront to make everything you want.

Ideally, if you want a saddlebag and a handlebar bag to match each other
*exactly*, you'd contact a custom bag maker and have them make both bags
out of the same fabric. If Sackville doesn't make rando bags to your liking
- say, if the BarSack isn't
your cuppa - there are a number of excellent bag makers around: Ruthworks
 in San
Francisco, Swift Industries in Seattle,

David currently has a traditional rando bag in gray canvas listed, which
appears to be the same color as a saddle wedge I got from him not too long

Thx, Liesl good input, much appreciated will continue to wool

Hi Leslie, I used the TourSacks once on a Riv S24O attached to a baby

tent was easily attached to the deck with the d-rings. And they have more
volume (I think) than the Backabikes. No complaints whatever for that
 application.

Here's why I went Backabikes: sometimes I just want/need only one bag in
back. Sometimes I need to lash something on the rack that can't be lashed
using d-rings. Sometimes I want to attach my old baggins loafer, again,
which can't be lashed using d-rings. But taking them off loaded isn't a
snap as I described earlier. They are though super easy to store and don't
take up much room at all with one tucked into the other and then flattened.
(My guess is that the TourSacks would take up a fair bit more of room)

So think about how you expect to use them and what's important to you with
 respect to function.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Hi Elisabeth, the Backabike bags aren't the fastest on/off but not the

easy/fast. Specifically, to take them on and off the rear rack, you have to
rethread the Irish strap through the grommets and then around the rack and
back through the grommets. That's tricky to do when loaded. Again, ripe for
 a hack.

This is NOT the same for the HAR bags because there are little posts at
the top that the Irish straps loop over. This means you don't have to
thread the strap through the grommets. shoji's comment is on point for the
 HARs but not the Backabikes.

 Hope this is helpful!

[RBW] Re: Sackville Backabike Bags

2015-02-28 Thread Leslie
I'm on the fence about these.I was wanting the TourSacks, but at their
price point, didn't want to jump half-heartedly on the olive, was going to
wait on a khaki-tan version.(And, even if they appeared today, might
not be an instant buy) These Backabike Rear bags do come in tan,
which I like, and have a better price point. But I don't know if I'd be
as fond of them.

Anyone that's had both, care to do a compare/contrast on the Backabike
Rears and the TourSacks?

(I keep trying to tell myself to save up and order a Swifts, but, that's
not happened yet...)

Thx,

-L

[RBW] Re: Sackville Backabike Bags

2015-02-28 Thread Liesl
Hi Leslie, I used the TourSacks once on a Riv S24O attached to a baby Hunq.
They were roomy and easy to grab the pair as one unit off the bike. A tent was
easily attached to the deck with the d-rings. And they have more volume (I
think) than the Backabikes. No complaints whatever for that application.

Here's why I went Backabikes: sometimes I just want/need only one bag in back.
Sometimes I need to lash something on the rack that can't be lashed using
d-rings. Sometimes I want to attach my old baggins loafer, again, which can't
be lashed using d-rings. But taking them off loaded isn't a snap as I described
earlier. They are though super easy to store and don't take up much room at
all with one tucked into the other and then flattened. (My guess is that the
TourSacks would take up a fair bit more of room)

So think about how you expect to use them and what's important to you with
respect to function.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

I have a pair and think they are fantastic. I have not had any problems

I posted a few pictures of how I attached them to the Clem Rack.

 Hello Riv group,

actually attach to a rear rack? Just using straps through the grommets? Any
review on how secure they are to the rack? These have peaked my interest,
but I am hesitant as I hate it when panniers aren't attached securely and
float around during a ride. I really like my Carradice Super C bags which
have a secure, ratchet attachment system but am looking to maybe throw some
Sackvilles into the mix. I love my Sackville shopsack and hope to add
 something of similar quality.

 Thanks for any insight!

Thanks for the insights Richard and Liesl. I'll be attaching the bags to a
Surly rear rack which is certainly stout and hardy. I've since moved the
Carradice panniers to the front and with the potential addition of the
Backabike bags, along with my Shopsack in the Wald and my Lowsaddle
Longflap in the rear I'll be fully loaded for groceries, camping,
commuting...well...anything for that matter. My LHT rig looks like a
similar setup to your custom, Liesl. Gotta love those Bosco bars!

[RBW] Re: Sackville Backabike Bags

2015-02-27 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Liesl,
Wow does that bike look great!

Sean,
I have the front HAR/HAB. I've had water enter the front bags in heavy
downpours (when commuting). I put my clothes in plastic bags... problem
solved. As it's near the front hub, there's a lot of water exposure from
fenders, wheel, brakes.

Liz,
It could be easy on/off. It depends on how you set up your strap(s), which
might depend on the type of rear rack. (I'm speaking as a user of the front
version, so I don't have direct experience with the back.)

Overall: recommended-- simple, attractive, well designed, durable. (Seems
like it would be easy to repair, but I haven't had to do that yet!) But if
you're looking for waterproof, get Ortliebs or other model.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Backabike Bags

2015-02-27 Thread Liesl
Hi Elisabeth, the Backabike bags aren't the fastest on/off but not the slowest
either. I'm sure a handy person could do a hack and make it super easy/fast.
Specifically, to take them on and off the rear rack, you have to rethread the
Irish strap through the grommets and then around the rack and back through the
grommets. That's tricky to do when loaded. Again, ripe for a hack.

This is NOT the same for the HAR bags because there are little posts at the top
that the Irish straps loop over. This means you don't have to thread the strap
through the grommets. shoji's comment is on point for the HARs but not the
Backabikes.

Hope this is helpful!

Other options may be available, or something hand-built to fit into the
stack above the headset.
Cheers.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Bar Sack review needed please.

2014-10-05 Thread lungimsam
@Aakash:
I have been using the Carradice Pendle Saddlebag, but it is so big it drags
on the rear wheels of my bikes unless I use a fender. Then it sits on the
fender. I don't want to put racks on the bike.
The next bag size down by Carradice is the Zipped Roll. But I think I need
something a little bigger. I don't tour or anything, and a Pendle sized bag
is enough for me.
So I thought I would try a front bag and see how I like it.
I think the only rack I would ever want to put on my bikes is a front rack,
but only if I had to for larger bag reasons or to mount a dynamo powered
light.

@ MKahri: Thanks for the info and tips # 3 and 6. Very clever!
