[RBW] Re: eCLEM
I had some time to kill yesterday so I stopped into a big LBS that I have only been to once, several years ago. My primary purpose was to see in-person and possibly ride a "+" bike. I ended up killing many birds with one stone, when the owner came out and chatted me up and asked if I had time to ride an e-bike. He had a whole row of demo bikes and he asked me what type bike I like and I emphasized that I like "FAT" tires. So, he put me on a full-suspension, 27.5+ e-bike. This let me experience: an e-bike, 27.5, plus size tires, current progressive trail geometry (slack head angle, really short stem, wide handlebar) and front AND rear suspension. All of these are things I've been curious about. I would encourage everyone to go out and try an e-bike. This video I found last night sums up my experience perfectly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fAtNi2Nozc&t=131sThe bike I rode was the FS version of the bike in the video. Things I learned: 1) I definately liked the plus tires and want them (probably 27.5) on my next bike. 2) I loved the short stem-wide handlebar combination. 3) I definately want a front suspension (I have arthritis in my shoulders and am getting more and more into off-road riding and my 2.10" tires don't provide enough cushion) 4) Rear suspension wasn't a bad thing and I might consider it for my next bike. 5) Schwalbe Rocket Ron tires handle and turn better than my Maxxis Torch 29's, which are basically slicks. 6) Riding an e-bike is the most fun I've ever had on a bicycle. I'm not sure I would want an e-bike for trail riding but a nice, cushy e-Rivendell is something that should exist and something I would love to own. [RBW] OT, sorry, but somewhat urgent question about car trouble
Riv content: I am riding my Rivs more, now that I've more or less given my 2006 PT Cruiser to my 16 year old daughter. The urgency concerns my daughter's use of the car. The PTC has been well maintained, given clean bill of health by competent mechanic*, and until yesterday evening was running well, as usual; just shy of 91K miles. Car has sat outside at Catie's mother's house most nights since school started in late August. Catie has driven it with no problems about 500-600 miles. In the last 5-6 weeks, our weather has been generally hot and dry, but with occasional heavy rain. Catie drove to friend's house yesterday just before 6 pm; cloudy, had been raining in spits during the last 2-3 hours. Drove back home just before 8 pm, raining. Car sat in driveway for 2 hours in heavy rain. When I tried to start it to put it into the garage, it cranked readily but wouldn't catch; usually it fires right up -- it was like trying to start my '68 Wildcat in very cold weather after sitting overnight. After much cranking, it caught, but ran very roughly; goosing the gas made a "popping" sound, but easing off let it run more or less normally. Goose again; again, hesitation, pop. Put in garage, left overnight. Any ideas? Google brings up humidity and rain as causes of electrical shorts; but Catie drove through no big puddles, and anyway, I have put 30K miles on car since 2011, often in heavy downpours; and it has sat outside in heavy rain; and never before such behavior. I'm concerned and bother the list because Catie depends on it for transportation to school. Ideas? Many thanks.. * He and his mechanic have accurately diagnose weird electrical problems before, and I am confident of their competence. -- Resumes, LinkedIn profiles, bios, and letters that get interviews. [RBW] Re: OT, sorry, but somewhat urgent question about car trouble
I am not a mechanic, and there isn't a way anyone can diagnose this online, but I will say: Usually when this kind of thing happens to me it is either the battery, alternator, or starter. But if this is the original battery to a 2006 vehicle then replacing it may work. My 2006 battery just died and putting in a new one fixed it. Changing the battery made the car run idle little rough until the computer, I am guessing it is, adjusted the idle. Last time this took a whole day of car use for it to settle into the right idle rpm's. Or, could just be the rain, though a car sitting out in rain should be no problem. Puddles can be, but usually the car fires right up again if the car stalls due to puddle. Let it dry out and see what happens. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: OT, sorry, but somewhat urgent question about car trouble
Patrick, I had a similar issue one time with an Isuzu Trooper. It was running just fine and the next day it wasn't. I turned out to be a diode in the ignition module. A close friend was having issues with his Ford Explorer. We were in the mountains camping so I followed him back home. The engine shut down right as we topped a long uphill climb. As we were coasting downhill. we spotted an Auto Zone in the valley, so we pulled in. A Z has free testing using a hand held unit that will give the code for the problem. Turned out the car had dropped a valve, so the engine management system shut down before the engine turned to toast.. The diode was easy to replace and cost about $225. The Ford's valve train required a lot of work for about $1500. So, point being apparently similar symptoms can result from very different issues. A local auto parts store may let you borrow or rent the hand held diagnostic so you can get the code for the problem. You certainly don't want to drive it if the valve train is having issues. Ignition issues "might" allow you to drive it to the mechanic. If you have insurance or AAA with towing, I would have it towed to the mechanic to insure the engine doesn't suffer further damage. Good luck! [RBW] OT, sorry, but somewhat urgent question about car trouble
Sounds like the distributor cap and ht leads got wet, either humidity (most likely) or a deep puddle. Pop the cap off, spray with WD40 and give the ht leads a spray as well. Missing caused by water shorting the electrics. This is a common problem where I come from in England and we all carried a can of WD40 in the boot. I thibk electrics are better now 25 years later, but it still happens. Some of that blue disposable and absorbant shop towel you buy in rolls at the auto parts store can be used to dry the inside of the distributor cap very effectively. [RBW] First impressions of Albatross bars
I swapped my beloved Noodle bars for Albatross on the Hilsen. My Roadeo and MAP custom both have Noodles, and I had swapped the Albas on my wifes Sam for Noodles (she doesn't like them, but very rarely rides so I took them, Peter Moore has sold me some Albas to put back on the Sam) so I took the plunge. I like the bars. At first the handling was different. Less input on the bars makes for more movement in the bike, but after a bit, I found that the bike may actually handle better with these bars. I like the MTB brake levers. The bars have Meisha cork grips with Shimano bar ends. I find that I can get into a more aggressive position by resting forearms on the grips. I had to mess with the tilt a bit before I got it right. I'd guess the bars are 10-20 degrees below horizontal. Anything closer to horizontal felt uncomfortable. I also seem to like to grab the forward curves of the bars, so if I keep them I'll twine the bar. It's bare now. The longest I've ridden them is about 2 hours, and at least right now, I don't think I'd want to do anything longer than that. I've ridden them maybe 150 miles or so. Another interesting thing I found is that the bars are really good for out of the saddle riding. One thing, though, is that my lower back gets kind of stiff when I ride them. Definitely different than Noodles in that respect. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Kiley - where are you located and how much of a hurry are you to get the parts? I'm in the Chicago area and I have a whole box of extra SKS fender parts so I could probably give you what you want. Let me see if I understand you correctly - you want 1) the long straight metal bracket with three holes to mount the front of the rear fender to the chain stay bridge and 2) the silver rear brake bridge mounting bracket? I have the former and that's no big deal, but the latter varies by width of the fenders. I have one extra for P45 fenders and another for P65 (26") fenders. I'm not familiar with the B53 so I'm not sure about compatibility. Lemme know what you'd like to do. I strongly recommend having the car looked at, there's just too many possibilities to diagnose it here. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: OT, sorry, but somewhat urgent question about car trouble
On top of which, service stations these days have electronic devices to read the stored codes, which will tell you exactly what is wrong. It's pointless to waste time guessing and using trial and error fixit techniques when you could just read the code and know what was wrong. Chris: Yes, I think most Rivs are excellent platforms for e-kits. Mark @ Rivendell joked that I should start doing conversions to sell to people. Hey Grant, gimme a little space in the shop and I'll get to work! In the year since I started this thread I've de-electrified and sold that frame - it was a smidge too small - and now have this CLEM L with a Bafang BBS02 mid-drive. I just read that the spark plug change interval is 30k miles and this car has 91k on it. [RBW] Re: Largest tires on Cheviots
On my 55 Chev 38's are the max with fenders, but mostly limited by the front brake interference noted in another, recent thread. 45 without fenders would probably work. [RBW] Re: OT, sorry, but somewhat urgent question about car trouble
First question should be - does it have a distributor cap or electronic ignition? If it has a distributor cap then moisture in there is a good possibility, and new distributor, points, and wires would be an easy, relatively low cost thing to try. If it's electronic, then the suggestion for checking the crank angle (or other) sensor is a good one. If it's electronic, someone should be able to read the engine codes to identify sensor failure.
