[RBW] FS: RARE: Platsack bag and Nitto rack $150 plus shipping, also Wiggy's sleeping bag

2022-10-28 Thread Ana Candela
Hi there,

This is a rare Sackville bag that goes with its special rack. I bought it
used from fellow list member Bill Lindsay a year ago. I unfortunately did
not use it even once (I did not even take the bubblewrap out, and it's
still in the same box Bill shipped it!), but I can say I kept good custody
of it ;) It is in great condition as Bill took good care of it. I'm
leaving town Tuesday, so must sell before Sunday, so I can ship Monday. I
paid $175 plus shipping. Asking $150 plus shipping, but open to offers.

I also have a Wiggy's sleeping bag that Riv used to sell. I used it a few
times as a throw blanket but never took it camping. Comes with bag. Paid
$125. Asking $60 plus shipping.

Photos to follow...

Thanks for looking!

Also, if you buy the Platsack (Platrack -sp?) bag, I’ll throw in the little
bag that goes with the large Sackville saddlebag. Used two or three times
only. Same olive color.

Re: [RBW] Re: Being Precious About Your Favorite Bike

2021-06-18 Thread Ana Candela
Leah,

Take the Platypus. Your precious will become more precious the more you
ride not the more she stays behind. But please please, like everyone has
said already, take all bikes with you in the hotel. Do not even leave them
inside the van. If anything, do it for MY peace of mind ;)

On a different note, #matchymatchy -- be still my heart!! You have upped
the game with those raspberry frame protectors! Now I look at my gray ones,
and they look so dull and unexciting. But #rivsisters unite: I also label
them, but only abbreviated: TT, DT, STT, STB, SSL, SSR... It does help when
in a rush at the train station :-D

Enjoy your trip!

[RBW] Re: Leah Peterson Takes A Stand

2021-01-20 Thread Ana Candela
Hi Leah,

I am currently selling my two bike stands: one is the one Riv sells (about
2 years old); the other, a Feedback mid range model (about 6-8 years old?).
I'm selling them locally because shipping would be a downside (I would
think at least $40), but I'm open to negotiation. They're both great, but
I'm selling because I need a third hand to set my bike on them, and that's
something you may want to consider when getting a. stand, whatever model
you choose. I can't carry my bike with one hand while affixing the clamp
with the other. I've hurt my bike and myself in the process, and I'm
looking for a different kind of stand, but apparently it doesn't exist yet,
unless I want a huge hydraulic stand for e-bikes. Why can't they make a
version of a car/moped jack for bikes? Way cheaper and even way less
cumbersome.

Anyway, if you're interested, I can send pics.

Once you try straps, you’ll never go to bungee cords again. One Irish strap is

I think I have a headlight and a smaller pump. Would he need a lock? I also
have a rear rack and compatible bag if his bike has eyelets for it. I could dig
in my parts bin and send photos if needed.

[RBW] urban/city tire rec: 650b, 38mm or so

2018-08-29 Thread Ana Candela
I’ve used these on my bike. I highly recommend all of them is their own
qualities :)

-Soma New Xpress 650B x 38 (34.71) express - BLACK tread: I think these ones
would fulfill what you’re looking for in terms of balance of budget, flat
protection, and smooth ride. My only complaint is the tan walls that will never
go back to their tan glory after a rainy ride. I know, trivial, but then what’s
the point of tan walls if they’re stained?

-Panaracer Pasela PT Wire 650B x 42 tire, blackwall: also budget, more heavy
duty, great flat protection. I used them all winter here in rainy Seattle’s
potholed pavement. This is the maximum size that the fenders will fit. Barely a
few mm of clearance, and you need to adjust the brake pads every time you take
the tires off.

-Compass 650B x 42 Babyshoe Pass: splurge and luxury for sure, not what you’re
looking for but definitely keep an eye on them. They're really nice and smooth
and tougher than what they seem. I’ve only ridden them in fair weather, but
they’ve handled great in Seattle’s awful pavement. Not sure if I’ll keep them
for the rainy winter though.

[RBW] nail polish suggestions

2018-08-29 Thread Ana Candela
I agree. That red nail polish looks like blood, haha :-P

I’m all about nail polish, and I probably have a similar color in my stash if
you’re interested. However, to avoid the close-but-not-close-enough color
matching, how about retouching with the blue of the decals (or another color
from the decals or bags, for example). Or go wild like we did a couple months
ago at Rivelo, when Aaron retouched his Atlantis with holo nail polish
https://instagram.com/p/BkRy4ozBL40/ I’ll be doing the same soon...

[RBW] Re: How do Rivendells fare fenderless on dry salty winter roads?

2018-08-29 Thread Ana Candela
Here in the PNW we only get a week or two of salty roads, but plenty of rainy
weeks, so take my advice with a grain of salt ;-D

I always keep fenders on. But even so, I still squirt a bottle of water on
frame, wheels, and drivetrain after a ride. My bike has seen two very wet
winters so far, and has fared perfectly.

Definitely keep riding your Rambouillet in the winter. You want the best bike
you can ride in harsh conditions :-)

Re: [RBW] Re: Model redundancy: Why not offer only canti/V brakes on all models? Why not offer a 650b on every model?

2018-06-01 Thread Ana Candela
Could be that choice of brake pads may improve (or not) your braking power, at
least in my experience. My side-pull brakes work great here in hilly rainy
Seattle. That said, lately I’m having not-so-great results with salmon pads in
dry weather. They were recommended for wet conditions over black pads, which
were grinding my rims away. I will probably go back to black ones...

[RBW] Re: Hot waxing chains?

2018-06-02 Thread Ana Candela
Michael,

It may look like a hassle at first for acquiring the necessary stuff and
thoroughly cleaning the chain to prep it for waxing. This is only done ONCE.
Thereafter, it takes only five minutes (+30 min of heating and letting it cool
down) every three or so weeks in dry weather, every week in wet (I commute
daily in Seattle).

There are several YouTube videos, and I recommend these two by Oz cycle:
Cleaning: https://youtu.be/D0eOxbnzDQA (long comparison of cleaning methods,
use kerosene)
Waxing: https://youtu.be/gF9nbwsaSHs

I posted some of my process on Instagram:

[RBW] Re: PSA Ram on Ebay

2018-06-22 Thread Ana Candela
I happened upon it the other day when I went to Goodwill to pick up some stuff
I had bought. Very exciting to see a Rivendell frame just sitting there next to
the wall. I even took a few photos, and as Lim says, not only could it have
been never ridden, but never built even. However, it looked as if it had been
stored in some abandoned corner of a shed or such all this time, and I’m bummed
to report of rust.

Bob: I’m guessing the original winning bidder saw the frame and decided not
worth to restore :(

[RBW] dogs on Rivs

2018-06-22 Thread Ana Candela
I once tried it with a trailer and my 40ish-pound dog, and she jumped out of it
within the first 20 feet. I gave up after a couple more tires. Goes without
saying to try it in a park or on a residential street before trying streets
with traffic.

Last Saturday at Rivelo’s anniversary party, their two granddogs (Boston
Terriers) rode in cocoon-shaped backpacks, so cute! So that could be another
option to acquaint your dog with riding and then graduate to the basket.

example, their new Captain Hook basket net is under "Racks":

[RBW] OT: Frankenbar sighting

2018-07-06 Thread Ana Candela
Wow! Talk about multiple hand positions! Must’ve been a fun project :-D

I’m not sure, but I don’t think it’s the Albastache or Moustache. The grips are
too long, and the front area where you clamp the stem is too long too.

[RBW] Helpless in Nevada: How do you secure this fender?

2020-03-21 Thread Ana Candela
Leah,

After reading the 70 posts, I already forgot half of what I wanted to comment,
but first I can only commiserate with you and your bikeshopless situation. I,
on the other hand, am lucky to have not one but two very good LBSs nearby. Even
if there is no other bike shop around you, I still stand on ditching that bike
shop —and I am happy to see everyone here agrees. And I can totally imagine the
grand opening of #thewigglyfender bike shop in Vegas 🤣

I’m glad you’ve got plenty of help here to fix the situation and that you took
the fender off before it could cause any damage. I cannot offer any suggestions
because I think all has been said, and I don’t have experience with metal
fenders, only my plastic ones that I uninstalled at some point, and then I
followed Riv’s video with Mark installing one. It’s a joy to watch Riv’s
videos. I wish they did more videos on maintenance. It’s hard to find good
instructional ones.

One thing that worries me is you mentioning the lousy packaging job they did
for your Clem, so what about your Betz? Could you put her back together again
while you wait for your Cheviot?

Keep on riding!

[RBW] Randi Jo Fab bartender bag for RBW

2019-05-05 Thread Ana Candela
Leah,

I second Jonathan’s suggestion. The Rivelo camera bag is really nice. The
photos do not make justice. I would guess that one could fit my 40oz bottle.

I also recall John posting that Randy was there for a trunk show a week or two
ago, and left some regular bartender bags as well as caps in stock at Rivelo.

[RBW] Has Anyone Rinko'd Their Riv? - Follow Up on Yesterday's Rivendell Email

2019-05-25 Thread Ana Candela
Hi Steve,

I did a home practice a while ago but have not applied it yet out there in the
field. Check out my IG post: https://instagram.com/p/BfcuunNDPHe/. This is not
quite Rinko because I had my bike fully disassembled while servicing. Also
check hashtags #rinkobike and #rinkobag for others' posts. I’m doing another
test later today or tomorrow while servicing my bike and will surely posts more
pics.

About Amtrak: I’ve had good experiences, but also very bad ones. Twice I’ve
come to find my bike dropped on the floor —with the corresponding scruffs >:-(
Thankfully no dings though.
A few things to consider: there are limited spots; check if there’s a surcharge
in your area; here in the NW it’s $5 each way, hey, but you can check two 50-lb
suitcases for free! You must unload all your bags and panniers from it: once
they made me unnattach my EMPTY saddlesack! Another time I came to find out a
passenger sleeping in the luggage compartment! And lastly, this is a personal
preference, I don’t like the idea of my bike hanging from a hook with all the
weight on a small spot of the rim. Sorry to sound so bitter about it, YMMV.

I love traveling by train, but next week I’m headed to Portland and chose the
bus instead: while less comfortable than the train, it’s cheaper, more frequent
departures, no bike surcharge, and my bike slides sideways in the baggage
compartment below.

Have fun with rinkoing your bike! The link posted by Ed above is a great
resource, and there’s a more recent article on it in BQ #67 p. 24 for extra
Rinko indulgence ;)

That’s the way it’s done on buses, at least here in the NW, so no convincing to

[RBW] Re: Multimodal Traveling: Rolling your Riv onto a Bus

2019-06-08 Thread Ana Candela
Hi Kellie,

No extra fees for the BoltBus, and no reservation needed. It is first come
first served, which can be problematic on trips when there’s lots of luggage,
and people cut in front to put their bag first, so you have to move them out of
the way to be able to fit your bike.

One thing I found on my return trip was that there’s an extra compartment.
Another bicycle arrived later, the front compartments were not quite full, but
would’ve required a lot of moving around. The driver popped that third door
open. I’m doing that next time, because I came to find a duffle bag on top of
my front wheel 😒

Also I remember the time we were three bikes, and the driver wanted to place
one on top of the other, and I said “No, we’re not!”. There was enough room;
just people don’t want to slide their stuff all the way to the opposite side.
It hasn’t happened that there has not been room. I wonder if anyone else has
had that experience and what happens then. Maybe have your bike rinkoed as a
backup plan...

Johnny,

I recently did this. I had a 170 double with chain guard. I bought a 165

I think you could just take the big ring off, like some here are saying. I have
it if you’re still looking for one. It’s disassembled. Rings are new, cranks

[RBW] Recommendations on cycling to Rivendell and around San Francisco and the Bay Area

2019-09-12 Thread Ana Candela
Hi everyone,

I’ll be attending a workshop in Santa Cruz, visiting Riv HQ, and
rambling/touring around the Bay Area the first ten days or so in October. I’d
like to ask for recommendations to locals and everyone who has done this before.

There are a couple threads from which I’ve already jotted down some very good
ideas and suggestions (walking/transit for one day:
https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/9HCur_vFbz4 and
driving for a couple days:
https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/tcDE9hIkvaA).

Now, I’ll be bringing my bike along, and I’ll be CYCLING for about a week, so
any bike-specific recommendations (must-do, steer-away-from) on cycling,
transit, multimodal traveling, eating, weather, camping, lodging, events that
will enhance my stay will be greatly appreciated :)

Thank you!

Not bulged (imagine): 1700 cubic inches, or 27.8 liters (the British way)
Bulged but not ridiculous: 1984 cubic inches, or 32.5 liters

The great thing about this bag is you can think “outside the bag”, so you can

Re: [RBW] Comparing Fabio's Chest and Large Saddlesack in use [was:Volume of LARGE Saddlsack?]

2018-12-30 Thread Ana Candela
Patrick,

Besides what Patrick suggested of strapping stuff on top, the Sackville bags
allow for expandability with their inner flap and extra long straps, so only
the sides would be exposed with really large loads. I’m sure you could carry a
few bags of cheese puffs! ;-)

I’ve never used the Fabios chest bag, but it looks like it’s expandable by
rolling up the top, so you would have the top of your load exposed. If you want
to fit the volume you mention and have it covered and tucked in nicely, you
would have to look for a another bag instead.

Looking at both websites, not only is the Sackville more stylish and better
quality but cheaper, too!
