[RBW] Re: Billie Bar Double Up lever‽

2018-07-17 Thread Kainalu V.
No, but I suppose braking produces more torque than shifting, what with big
levers vs small levers, so shifting/Yes braking/no. Could be that it would be
fine, like a twelver on a Mark's rack, but is not to be endorsed for
liability's sake.

[RBW] Re: Naive but very important question: how best to attach 12-packs to your rear rack?

2018-07-18 Thread Kainalu V.
As long as they're somehow packaged together, as opposed to loose brews in
a tray, nothing's better than bungees if you don't want extra stuff
(besides bungees which you'll never notice when properly stowed). It takes
time, but if you strategically sew up your load with bungee cords you can
get a lot of control with minimal overhead/undertush. And every once in a
while when you see someone struggling with an unsecured load on a bike that
should otherwise be able to handle it, give them a bungee and change their
lives?

Adjustability proves nothing is perfect. That Bullmoose aren't proves something

Whatever it is, it's worked for me. I've had them on multiple quickbeams and
have loved them, much of that love due to their lack of adjustability and the
resulting squash of the dreaded "hand wringing" over it's not perfect enough.
As Garth might say, put your hands on it and pedal!, it'll be fine. And as Joe

When I got my Hillborne, the 64 was the only one made in Wisconsin. I think
they all were cantilever ready, probably could've gotten it without. And at 95
PBH, I'd say you should be taking aim at the 64. I was at the very top of the

[RBW] Bar-end brake levers on Albastache?

2018-09-01 Thread Kainalu V.
The only thing that makes me nervous about reverse brake levers is the horrid
bushwacking hook where the lever acts to hook a branch rather than deflect it,
but if you don't find yourself on tightly shrubbed trails, I think there is no
better lever. And if you pair them with interrupter levers way out front you'd
be giving yourself a quick brake option at any point along that sweet
albastache curve.

I'm looking to buy some indexed 9 speed bar end shifters, Shimano or the

Ugly but functional is good with me, though pretty and functional is good
too.
And if you only want to sell the right (indexed) side? Great!
Please email off list to kaivierstra at gmail .com

I can't see the picture either, and I'm getting tired of signing out and in

[RBW] Re: WTB: Binder bolt

2018-10-29 Thread Kainalu V.
Everybody, get a hacksaw, and even more importantly, get a file. It's never
enough to just cut it and back the nut out to clean the threads, what
you're left with is a sharp edged bolt that's hard as heck to thread back
into your nut. if you file a little bevel onto the cut end of the bolt
after cutting and before backing the nut off to clean the threads, you'll
have a good looking bolt that's easy to use.
Note: do your cutting and filing with your bolt in a vice or vice grip
pliers (buy some if you don't already have them). Not with the bolt in your
bike.

[RBW] Re: Rear racks for kid seats

2018-10-30 Thread Kainalu V.
Yepp makes a rear rack that works with their seat, and it's bombproof. They
also make an adapter that can be fitted to a tubus rack, this is probably
what makes Tubus nervous about saying you could put a kid back there, they
have to trust everyones ability to mount an adapter securely. The dedicated
Yepp rack will make the seat slightly lower profile, making it that 1.5"
more stable. And yes, Yepp seats are the best.

Here's a link to the Yepp
rack-

[RBW] Rear racks for kid seats

2018-10-31 Thread Kainalu V.
Having used the Yepp rack for years now, I declare that the only drawbacks are
weight and that there's no pannier rails other than the grossly oversized top
rail, which would work fine with strap on panniers. I brazed on some lower
rails to get past the no pannier drawback (and made it even heavier!). The
weight thing is so they, unlike Tubus or Nitto, can proudly say to go ahead and
put your kid on this. The seat attachment system is quick and secure. In my
opinion, if anyone's got major issues they want to complain about on the
internet regarding these ugly, heavy, beautifully designed racks, their
problems likely extend well beyond bike parts. Buy with confidence.

[RBW] Medium saddle sack vs bagboy

2018-11-12 Thread Kainalu V.
The medium seems not quite twice the size of the bagboy, but close. I have a
kangaroo pouch from my medium I put on the bagboy, it's an essential addition
to the bagboy, sometimes I leave it off the medium as it's got the side
pockets. Both great bags, I do like the single strap closure on the bagboy.
Might be worthwhile waiting to see the new medium bag that'll be hitting the
shelves soon, the happibag I think?

[RBW] Children, check your tread

2018-04-15 Thread Kainalu V.
So how far beyond the little nubs of the 2.35" G-ones do you suppose is safe?
My center nubs have recently disappeared, am I close to some serious orange
seal fountaining? I had a fun experience back in the cold days of winter when I
forgot my lock and had to bring my bike in from the cold at work. I was sipping
my coffee looking at my bike when, after an hour or so in the warmth, I watched
two separate streams shoot off of my tires at once. Luckily the polished
concrete floor was the only victim of the streams and was easy to clean up.
Watch your temperatures!, keep your cold tires cold! And your cold tubes cold
too! But, back to my initial thought/question, will you ride your tubeless big
ones down to their fibrous core? Or are they too scary once they're denubbed?

[RBW] Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-04-26 Thread Kainalu V.
Sealant rules everwhere. You're putting sealant in a deflated tube, yes? And
removing the valve core when you do? I've been having good luck with the
clogging problem by giving the valves a shot of boeshield before I replace
them. I ride in NYC everyday which, while not being filled with goatheads, is
pretty hard on tires. I run Schwalbe Big Ones tubeless on bike A with
occasional refills of sealant. Bike B's got Thunder Burts with sealant in tubes
and they've been absolutely trouble free for months. Before sealant I was
plagued with flats, now it's a memory.
Enjoy goathead country!

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-02 Thread Kainalu V.
After a 64 Hillborne, (only)two 68 Quickbeams, a 65 Clem H, a Will's Mountain
Mixte, and a Hubbuhubbuh. The Beams were super, the Clem does whatever I want
it to, the Hillborne was the first bike that fit, and the tandem is too fresh
to judge. But the mixte?, that bike rules. Had to do some filing to get the
chain to stop pinching between the cassette and somewhat low hourglass
braze-on, and the blue took awhile before I loved it (I do!), but that bike
gives me great joy. With it's step throughness, it looks slow and relaxed,
which makes it more of a kick when it's not being slow and relaxed, and makes
slow and relaxed that much more so. Love love love that bike...

[RBW] WTT :: 68cm Quickbeam for Huge Rosco Mixte

2018-05-23 Thread Kainalu V.
The huge Rosco is an amazing bike, as is a 68 Quickbeam, best of luck finding a
trade. Curious how you feel about the big Clem low, not that I've got one to
trade, but what makes you want the Rosco step through specifically? I've got a
65 Clem high and the Rosco, I take my kids on both. The Rosco can do anything,
there's no argument that it's the greatest bike ever made for us upper
outliers. It's good looking and better riding. But, for kid hauling
specifically, the Clem's even longer wheelbase is phenomenal. So my advice (not
that you're asking) is get that Rosco!, but should that not work out, the
Clem's there waiting.

[RBW] 59/65cm 700c/29er Clems with 29x2.5 Surly Extraterrestrials?

2018-05-25 Thread Kainalu V.
You have the clearance, but do you want to use it is the question, and a good
one. The taller your wheel gets, the more it affects steering and general
steadiness. I've got my 65 wearing 2.25 Thunderburts with 4 oz. of sealant in
each ultralight tube. The steering is great, the roll superb, the traction
undeniable, and flats aren't happening.
Enjoy your roll, whatever you decide

[RBW] Re: Generations of Clems

2018-05-26 Thread Kainalu V.
The first and only generation of 65 Clems had straight seat stays because (I
believe) they were the frame that was intended for the surplus of seat lug
castings that were the original push to produce the frame in the first place.
The curved seat stays were a work around to accommodate the smaller Clems use
of that gargantuan seat lug.
So it stands to reason that the 65 Clem H is the one true Clem! With the
assumption being that I've got my story straight..

[RBW] Hubbuhubbuh Tandem, large WIP

2018-06-02 Thread Kainalu V.
Not quite ready for prime time here with this tandem, and my smarter,
better, more sane half has "no way, no how'd" it after submitting to a
block long test run. I'm hoping to dial it in a bit and try for a redo
soon, maybe get the stoker bars a little forward would do it. I put the
shifters on the back bars to stoke the stoker with the power to shift, and
it's easy enough to shift "suicide" style if I'm solo, likely I'll be
moving the shifters to the front soon enough. Maybe I'll ride in back
(she's 5'8" and I'm a foot taller. Bad idea?), regardless, the kids are
growing quick and'll be reaching those pedals soon enough. I've also got
some clamp on cranks I picked up off the list that I might set up to get
them stoking sooner, but it only looks to be a year or so away that my
oldest will be able to touch down on those pedals, so probably not.
Anyhows, here's some pictures. Those are 2.35" 650b G-ones with plenty of
room to spare, and the head badges came off of some decommissioned beamers.
It's been said there'll be hubbuh badges coming along eventually, but I
really like the beams riding along with me/us, but if the kids end up
sharing their mother's concerns it'd probably be best to have those badge
options available in the event of a sad sale.
The build is--
40 hole Velocity Cliffhangers front and rear on a velocity rear hub and SON
front dyno hub.
Schwalbe 2.35 G-ones, set up tubeless
Silver cranks, 178mm front, 170 rear
Deore derailers shifted with some old stem mount Suntour friction shifters.
Front's just a chain guide right now...
Brooklyn Bikes bar in the rear, flipped albas up front (to get slightly
lower, giving the stoker a better view?)
VP pedals, comfy out back, spikey up front
and Brooks saddle (b68 front, b17s back)

Saddle height's somewhere in the low to mid 80's in the picture, a little
low for me but good for getting both feet down if and when needed.
Can't wait to put some miles on it

[RBW] pinching fenders and Quickbeam clearances

2018-06-03 Thread Kainalu V.
I ran fenders on my quickbeams no problem, but it looked pretty ugly. I used
sks with the quick releases front and back to facilitate wheel removal and
general safety. When I upped the tire size I just split the fenders and
bracketed them so that there was no actual fender between the frame and tire.
Only an inch or so of space for goop to fly through. I've got a pile of
butchered plastics you're welcome to pick through, and some honjos you could
have for cheap (but they wouldn't clear 38s (and they're horribly oxidized!))

[RBW] Re: What frame and build set make you a safer, slower rider?

2018-06-05 Thread Kainalu V.
Ron and Patrick- When I was a kid my dad (a physicist who worked as an engineer
for M.I.T.'s Lincoln Laboratory for 50 years) told me to watch closely how my
pinewood derby car acted during the big race. He explained before hand that my
car, with it's weight pushed as far back as we could get it, would be behind
the pack at the bottom of the ramp but would certainly win on the flat. It did
every time and I walked away with the victory that day. So yes, weight forward
or centered wins on the downhill, but if you want to have an easy fast coast
through the flats you want that weight out back. A pannier system that
relocated the load depending on level would be nice, but way off topic...
As far as the topic is concerned, what Mark said about mixtes and keeping with
the flow of traffic is spot on.

[RBW] U locks and Pitlocks

2018-06-06 Thread Kainalu V.
Here in NYC I use a small U-lock around the frame to the bike rack or post with
a fairly heavy cable running from my front wheel, through my seat rail, down
through the rear wheel, terminating at the U-lock.
Someone could clip the cable, but then they'd be faced with removing the parts
they want from the frame which is still firmly affixed to whatever.
Further tips- make sure whatever you're locking to is actually stable, many
sign posts pull right out like golf flags. And huge huge hugest tip- use the
cable to keep your bike from falling over. I've seen countless beautiful bikes
stomped flat to the ground by enraged thieves or drunken hooligans, or drunken
thieves. "If you can't steal it, at least destroy it" is their mantra.
