Hi Bill

Here is one that has a 300 watt ac side.
Propane doesn’t use any watts

Re: [RE-wrenches] Propane frig

2021-10-18 Thread Dan Fink
Bill; That sure sounds like a 3-way RV fridge to me -- propane, 120VAC or
12VDC, lever selectable, doesn't use any electricity when run on propane
except sometimes a light and temperature display/control. The small 3-ways
I've dealt with tended to draw ~140W, but I guess it wouldn't surprise me
if a larger model drew 350W on AC or DC, and they make some pretty large
ones for the mobile palaces. Terribly inefficient when run electrically,
it's just a heating element, but OK for the RV park where the electrical is
free and from a pedestal. I've had to break that bad news to a few off-grid
wannabees, unfortunately usually after they already bought one. Efficient
electric fridges suitable for off-grid solar all use a compressor.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Generator recommendation request

2021-10-18 Thread Luke Christy
Allan,
I would not hesitate to use either the Kohler 12RES or the 14RES.
I have many of the 14RES units out in the field and to this date they have been
the most consistently reliable generators out of the various brands I’ve used
over the years (Generac, Cummins-Onan and others). Several customers with 14RES
units have over 2000 hrs, and one 14RES in a very particular situation that
demand high runtime has just clocked 5,000 hours with no major repairs. For a
genset powered by a 3600 rpm engine I find that amazing. Anyway, just my two
cents. I don’t think you’ll go too far wrong with Kohler.

Hi Bill,

Sounds like an intermittent field effect transistor in the power bridge. I
use the Schneider XW guy up in Oregon but I do not know if he works on the
old Trace gear. If you strike out, drop me an email and I will find it as I
never need him.

They do not last forever and there are a ton of them with various issues
on ebay so beware. I just went thru a few with a die-hard old client that
would not modernize and bought old spares. He ended up paying me alot of
hours for me to say I told you so. It was a really nice drive 4 times

Bill,
Craig Wilburn at Phantom Power Service, 425-501-7280, rebuilt a couple of
SW4024 boards
for me about 2 years ago, reasonable price and very helpful instructions and
photos.

Subject: [RE-wrenches] Trace 4024 cutting out

Hey Folks,

I haven't seen this one until yesterday. Customer with a
20 year old Trace SW4024 called. I've been servicing this reliable
system for the last 8 years. He said after a delay the power shuts off
when a moderate load comes on after 5-15 seconds, then back on, then
off. Light loads no problem, the power stays on. The inverter
stays on the entire time (yellow light and that famous audio buzz) but I
hear a relay? inside the left side of the wiring section with each
change of on-off, off-on state. I assume its a repair to a service
shop. Ideas? Recommendations for repair shops? I haven't been getting
a response from the Solar Cowboyz in Grass Valley.

Thanks,

Bill

2021-10-18 Thread Chris Worcester
I saw this once on a system I was called out to diagnose. a loose battery cable
bolt was the culprit. It worked under a low draw of current, then cut out as
the current rose, melted the battery lug severely by the time I saw it. Chris
