RE: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater Receive Preamp
The decision whether (or not) to add a preamp to the receive side of a repeater should be made after carefully evaluating your installation. As many others have preached (besides me!), a receive preamp is *not* a cure-all; indeed, it may create new problems rather than solving old problems. First of all, your antenna should be the optimum design for your station, balancing gain and pattern with "duplexability." The highest-gain antenna available is not always the best choice, especially if the repeater site is at a high elevation. Downtilt antennas have very "spoky" patterns, and should be evaluated very carefully. Your feedline should be as good as, and as low-loss as, you can afford. My rule of thumb is to *always* select a feedline that has no more than 1.0 dB of attenuation at the receive frequency. Don't be compelled to put your antenna at the 500 foot level of a tower, simply because the tower is 500 feet tall. Five hundred feet of too-small feedline can have a *lot* of loss, and it's possible that the repeater will work far better just 50 feet above ground. As Chip Angle has pointed out in his excellent application notes, a receive preamp should *always* be preceded by an effective bandpass cavity filter. Such a filter not only greatly attenuates your repeater's transmitter carrier, but it also keeps out all of the other carriers that can desense your receiver. Go here: http://www.anglelinear.com/repeaters/repeaters.html A notch-only duplexer is perhaps not the best choice for a repeater- especially in a high-RF environment. 73, Eric Lemmon WB6FLY From: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED]Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 9:10 AMTo: repeater-builder@yahoogroups.comSubject: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater Receive Preamp Interested in the idea of placing a preamp on the Rx side to increase HT coverage. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Higher Output Exciter
Thanks for the information Kevin, I have some factory made 5 watt, 3dB attenuators. If your custom made 10 watt amp was turned down to five watts and the attenuator was used I could get my 2.5watts for the one PA and my 5-10 watts without the attenuator for the other. Do you see any problem using the attenuator with your PA so I could drive the lower power input PA if I needed? What does Repeater Builder (the business) get for the Custom 10 watt amp? Re: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater Receive Preamp
I'd try one between the RX port of the duplexer and receiver and see what happens. The addition of a preamp depends as much on site conditions as the equipment you use. If necessary, you could easily add a Band Pass cavity between the RX port of the duplexer and the input of the preamp. I expect a major problem with the output circuits or the duplexer, if there is one. Those normally run at 30-45W out in continuous duty with no problems. And I doubt that transistors rating are correct. I know Tait was trying to do 100W continuous duty with one transistor, and failed miserably. Even in intermittent use the collector lead would unsolder itself on a regular basis. I expect a proper rating for it would be more like 50W continuous. -- Jim Barbour WD8CHL Yahoo! I'm pretty sure the Phoenix-S and -SX are direct FM, but regardless, the Maxar/Moxy line will work very well for link transmitters. Throttle the output down to abt 5-10W, less if you get the 10W Moxy version. I forget exactly where to feed audio, but it will be fairly near the deviation pot for the type of link you're using. And at that, it should pass incoming PL tone fairly well. Another angle would be to find some UHF MVP's and swap in the VHF rx section. They are interchangable, can be easily duplexed, and give you a complete package in one box, less pwr supply. -- Jim Barbour WD8CHL Yahoo! [Repeater-Builder] Re: Repeater Receive Preamp
For best performance you will need in the order of 120db isolation between TX and RX. It generally takes a duplexer with 6 cans 3 on each side with a band pass, band reject mode of operation. 6 cans with notch only will not make the grade. Then do not go overboard on the gain. Stay with something in the order of 7-10db with under 1 db noise figure. There are a few folks out there that sell units that have been in use for many years. I scanned the fold-out page, then made three files out of them. I uploaded them to a server so you can get them at your leisure. Each one is close to 1MB. You should be able to cut-and-paste each link below into a browser and retrieve the three images. Save each one and print/view as necessary. http://home.comcast.net/~wa1mik/layout.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~wa1mik/parts.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~wa1mik/schema.jpg It looks like that emergency tone output can easily be defeated by cutting or grounding one wire coming out of the power supply. In fact, that entire 556 IC is only used for creating the tone. Hope this matches your unit. Let me know when you've retrieved the files so I can delete them and recover some storage space. [Repeater-Builder] Higher Output Exciter
Hello to Kevin and the group. Still another amplifier question: In my case I have a great Micor Repeater and I have a need to increase the output of the exciter to either 3-5 watts or 5-10 watts to drive some commercial amplifiers that operate in that INPUT range. I am wondering what is the best way to get that kind of drive, from the existing 400-500 Mw Drive I have from the Micor Exciter. Also has anyone had any experience with the PagePro Exciter by Sonix Tech. in CA? This is a synthesized 1.5 ppm Paging Exciter Model DPM- 150-SX. I have been told the output is adjustable up to about six watts. Any comments about using one of these for repeater use? They are VHF in the 150.XXX Paging Freq. and MAY program to the 2-meter band.
