Most of the advice given here about taping antenna connections
and the

techniques has been right on. However, I've been using Scotch 88 for sealing

connectors since about 1970 as it is twice as thick as 33+. Supposedly the

same material, just thicker.

I was also taught to spray the connections with clear Krylon before and

after taping. Also, spray it on all the external hardware, nuts and bolts,

etc. It dries so thin that the hardware can be easily removed but does

provide protection against corrosion, at least for a few years.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Rackmount clips/screws

2008-08-24 Thread wd8chl
Most GE and Glenayre cabinets have either 10-32 threaded holes already,
or holes designed to be threaded to 10-32. The screws used on Glenayre
cabinets are self-tapping 10-32's. Put a 5/16 nutdriver bit on your
drill and run 'em in, it'll thread right up.

2008-08-24 Thread John J. Riddell
One problem that I have found with pre-threaded 10-32 holes on racks etc, is
that they paint them
after they thread the holes. If you try to turn a screw in these holes, it
will likely twist off.

The best way to clean them out is to get a 10-32 tap and put it on the drill
chuck and carefully
run it in. Some racks that we use at work, have a peice of steel just
behind the rack screw holes so you
have to be really careful with a drill tap in these or you'll twist the tap
off.

We use 10-32 Robertson screws, square head type. (A Canadian invention).

For racks with slightly larger holes that are not threaded, we use 12-24
self tapping screws.

I think the original question on this thread was to find the clips for those
racks that have a square
hole in them instead of 10-32 holes, and several people have given good
suggestions as to where to
locate these.

Perhaps one should not assume that the rails are threaded 10-32, without
verification. All of the racks I have purchased in the past three years are
pre-threaded 12-24, not 10-32. The racks were made by Bud Industries:

[Repeater-Builder] Interested in Scholer Johnson LTR info/conversion/software/eproms for Maxtrac

2008-08-24 Thread skipp025
Hello there,

I have posted this same request on the radio programming
group with no results... yet. So what the heck... once over
here couldn't hurt.

I'm interested in learning more about the Scholer Johnson LTR
eproms (firmware) and software to make a vhf or uhf 450 maxtrac
or similar radio do LTR trunking.

Has anyone ever had luck using their products on VHF or UHF
LTR Systems? Would you be nice enough to go through a quick
example of what's required to convert a radio over to LTR?

Where can I find Scholer Johnson if they're still in business?

Would anyone on the group here have any use S-J Eproms/Proms
and the software to program the radios they would consider
selling/trading or what ever works best.

thanks in advance for your replies.

cheers,

McMaster-Carr, a major industrial supplier, sells Scotch 33+ tape for $ 1.51
per roll, plus tax and shipping. The pricing varies widely, depending upon
the width and the length of the roll. The same company also carries Scotch
88 and 130-C tapes in various sizes, as well as Scotchkote sealing compound.
Go to www.mcmaster.com/ and enter tape in the search box. Page 3348 lists
almost any tape made by 3M in many categories.

Since mail-order shipping costs often exceed the cost of the product, always
look into buying such items over the counter at your local electrical supply
house. Some electrical distributors give Hams the same discount as
contractors.

[Repeater-Builder] maxar 80 uhf

I have a MAxar 80 mobile MD34tsa1800A sitting on the shelf here.

Its a 25 watter according to the side plate.

I'd like to make use of the PA section on our Hamtronics unit to
experiment, to see if extra RF out will cause any desense. It looks
pretty beefy on the heatsink for a trial run.

Here is my problem. Aside from the small RF in and out cables, there
are 5 leads that go to the main board. I will assume they are for B+
and some sort of TX switching. I dont need any TX switching as the
amp will be in the TX line of the repeater.

Has anyone got a wiring diagram for the MAXAR handy?

I've looked on some manuals sites with no luck.

Thanks

Wow. I guess it depends on who you go thru. Some dealers must have one
heck of a mark-up. Some folks that I Googled around were selling the UHF

2008-08-24 Thread Eric Lemmon
Ian,

The service manual for the D34TSA series mobile radios is 6881037E90, but it
has been cancelled and is NLA from Motorola Parts. You may be able to find
that manual by searching the many vintage manual vendors.

You might be able to get the information you need by perusing the D33TSA
(VHF High Band) manual 6881037E95, which is still available from Motorola
Parts for about $28. The PA board itself is different, of course, but the
wiring to it should be similar if not identical between the VHF and UHF
models.

[Repeater-Builder] UHF Repeater Antennas (combining threads)

2008-08-24 Thread Cort Buffington
Folks,

I have a similar question about UHF Amateur repeater antennas so I'll
try to combine threads if possible.

I just tested my two DB-420s with freshly re-taped harnesses and
cleaned up connections, etc. I'm getting somewhere around 1.7:1 to
1.8:1 VSWR on 444.825, the repeater transmit frequency. Here are my
ponderings to the combined wisdom of the group (religious and highly

please folks, don't be bashful :)

1) Just use it as is, after I put the 105' of hardline on it and all
that'll be good enough?
2) Try some sort of modification to improve performance in the ham band?
3) Ah, forget the 20' tall antenna, just put up a Diamond X50 and call
it good?
4) Give up repeater-ing

P.S. repeater location is the top spot on a 100' tower in a rural
location that is relatively high terrain. The repeater is meant to
cover between two cities 25 miles apart, and is between them.
Transmitter is a 100W TPL RXRF that I'd like to run at the 100W. I
have remote receive locations and will place remotes and a voter if I
can talk loud enough to warrant it.

I suspect the 1.51 price is for one of the smaller rolls, not the general 3/4
x 66' roll.

Whomever locates the best price, post it here. I've always purchased at an
electrical supply house and get a box of ten rolls at a time for a slightly

better price. The first box I bought was somewhere around $18.50, so you
 can
see I've been purchasing it for a long time.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: UHF REPEATER ANTENNA IDEAS WANTED

2008-08-24 Thread Joe Burkleo
Steve,
The coaxial colinear is my favorite home made repeater antenna. I
usually try and find a bad commercial antenna and suck the insides out
and replace with insides cut to ham frequency. I do not use RG-58 as
this article references, I will typically use RG-8 that does not have
foam type center insulation. I recommend the use of double wall heat
shrink tubing around the joints for more strength.

http://www.rason.org/Projects/collant/collant.htm

The antenna design is also very well detailed in the ARRL Repeater
Handbook that was first published in the early 1970's. I have been
involved in building several of these for 2 Meter repeaters and am
presently in the process of building one for 222 MHz that will go
inside a Stationmaster shell that was originally made for 170 MHz.

73, and good luck.

Painting rack rails? Yikes...

 John VE3AMZ

Yeah-I've seen some with that thread too-a bit tougher to find screws
for it, yes.

I saw where he mentioned GE cabinets, and all the ones I've seen had
10-32 threaded holes or holes drilled to the size to thread as 10-32.
In fact, the Mastr III's I helped install 2 years ago were set up for
that, and we had some minor issues with the racks the customer wanted
them in, since they were the 12-24 style microwave racks, and we didn't
have any 12-24 screws...emergency trip to nearest hardware store...

Now Motorola cabinets on the other hand mostly have 1/4 holes for the
tinnerman nuts he was talking about...
