[Repeater-Builder] High Band Micor receiver needed

2009-11-04 Thread Budd T
Does anyone have High Band Micor receiver available?
Monty, KE7JVX was checking out one of my 222 repeater conversions for numbness
and has narrowed the problem down to asking for "a whole Micor receiver
section,or just the Reciever Auido Power Amplifier and Audio/Squelch Board."
Please contact Monty Dana
or me offlist if you can help.

Returning to the question posed a year ago. All the replies were about
linking on 420-440. I guess avoiding comment about 900 MHz confirms my
observations about using 900 MHz. So far I'm underimpressed with
noise/interference and narrow band audio on 900 MHz.
Is it possible to have a linked system with good quality signal to
noise and full audio? Every conversation I've had was more fatiguing
that trying to talk on 160M during summer monsoons.
I keep being told to link two repeaters with 900 MHz.
I don't want to link my 222 MHz repeaters inband. I've already seen
all the linking anecdotes about using 420-440...what should I pursue?

Hello,

I have a Mitrek, Model # J34JJA6100AK, Chassis # HUE1006A. While
this seems to be a 30 watt UHF radio, the frequency range and the
required channel elements are a bit of a mystery. My Motorola Mitrek
book does not identify this item and my search on the WEB produced
nothing different than the numbers I have in the Motorola Book.

Any help would be appreciated!!

[Repeater-Builder] Web Beacons

2004-12-29 Thread Budd Turner

For your information ...

Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo
Group users around the net and see what
you're doing and where you are going - similar to cookies. Yahoo is
recording every website and every group you visit. Take a look at
their updated privacy statement:

http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy

About half-way down the page, in the section on cookies, you will see
a link that says web beacons.
Click on the phrase web beacons.

http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/beacons/details.html

That will bring you to a paragraph entitled, "Outside the Yahoo
Network." In this section you'll see a little, "click here to opt
out" link that will let you "opt-out" of their new method of snooping.

Once you have clicked that link, you are exempted.

Notice the "Success" message on the top of the next page.
BE CAREFUL because on that page there is a "Cancel Opt-out" button
that, if clicked, will *undo** the opt-out.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Spectrum Communications

2004-05-08 Thread Budd Turner : N7EOJ

Hi Joe:
You just hit the "shock & awe" button for this group.
Yes the company is still in business.  It has the worst reputation of any I have encountered.  Kevin Schaeffer is the only person you can communicate with.  You quickly realize he is a snake oil and used car specialist

When I mentioned Rectum Cons. on this group, traffic quadrupled for almost a week.  I immediately received not several, but many, emails with similar stories.  Most gave me the name, phone number and email to a specific agent in the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office that was handling similar cases against the company.
My personal experience started ~9 months ago, and lasted 7 months.   I was talked into resurrecting an SCR1000 with a long history of problems.  (Had I been a member of this group then I wouldn't have touched the SCR1000)
I sent the exciter & PA for repairs.  Kevin initially said it needed a new exciter ($250) and they would retune the PA for free.  Then it was $350.  After many unanswered emails and phone calls, Kevin said they had to do extra work requiring the additional charge.  He then charged my Visa $450.  After many unanswered emails and phone calls over a three month period I had Visa reverse the charges.  That resulted in Kevin screaming on my phone at 5:00 AM the following morning.
After another month of negotiating, I said I would not pay any more than the justified $350.  When I received the Transmitter section back, seven months after sending to them, it lacked the crystal oven Kevin said is standard on their exciters. Transmit power is 12-18 Watts with the claimed 30 Watt PA.
I decided to accept it as having been screwed and not bother with further deception and irritation.

[Repeater-Builder] Fuses on power cords

2004-01-07 Thread Budd
I'm caught in the middle of a couple of feuding technical "experts"
on a probably trivial issue.
Some Mobile radio power cords are fused on only the positive line.
Others are fused on both lines.
One's logic is you only need one fuse. The other maintains their
communications shop lost all the radios with only one fuse to a
shorted power supply and none of the dual fused radios were
effected. The one fuse expert says that is BS and the other is lying.
What is the collective experience/knowledge on here for this topic?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts & 73

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Repeater Help

2004-01-06 Thread Budd
Happy New Year to all;
Some of you may remember my starting a similar Spectrum bashing
thread a couple of months ago when I foolishly agreed to try to
resurrect the Tucson 223.94 MHz Spectrum Communications repeater
last summer.
After getting literally ripped off by Spectrum Communications,
(Story too long and probably not of interest), I've been researching
a better approach.
I've learned of Micor and GE conversions for 220MHz. I've been told
the Micor conversion is easiest and best.
I'm searching for a High-band Micor for conversion to 222 repeater.
The models I'm told that will work are TLD4071-4074 (older 8
channel), TLD5271-5274 (older 4 channel), TLD8271-8274 (Newer 4
channel).
The documentation says modification of a TLD5274 or TLD8274 requires
the least component changes.
If you know of any of these please let me know of availability &
price.
I would like to get this frequency occupied and active again.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or assistance.

PS. A second less pressing request. Please delete all the
unnecessary repitition when replying to posts. My mailbox was filled
today by the digests of messages containing the previous 5-15
messages in each of their replies.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Spectrum Communications SCR1000 VHF

2003-11-27 Thread Budd Turner

FWIW:  I posted on here a couple of months ago expressing regrets I had not seen all the Spectrum bashing before I acquired for resurrection, a Spectrum SCR-1000  220 repeater.  I received plenty of cards & letters from everyone with an opinion. (Ever see a ham without an opinion?  I used to think that was a license requirement.  I get the impression that is now the only requirement...But I digress.)
BTW, Coy, over half of the incoming email was regarding legal actions against Spectrum and included contact information for the PA. Attorney General's office and other cases pending. I sent the exciter & PA to Spectrum in August.  The previous owner sent the PA to them to be tuned to the INPUT frequency of the repeater!!!  I figured that was why it locked up and burned up the exciter.
Kevin Schaefer, "Spectrum Sales Manager", advised they would retune the PA free, since I was getting a replacement exciter ($250).  Odd how the only person I can contact at Spectrum is Kevin Schaefer.
"Total cost would be ~$250-$275."
Next conversation, (three weeks later), Kevin said it was going to cost "$325 to no more than $350".  I approved the charge to my Visa, since I was committed this far.
Three weeks later, when the Visa statement arrived, Spectrum had charged $432.50.
I emailed and voice-mailed Kevin several times over the next two weeks, with no response.  I copied Spectrum on an email to Visa to reverse the over-charge due to lack of response from the merchant.
At 5:00 AM the next morning Kevin was on the phone, screaming.  We went the gamit of how they lose money dealing with hams, to he wasn't responsible for the over-charge but "would try to get the owner to approve refunding some of the money."
Two weeks later Kevin called to report he had talked the owner into refunding $50 of the overcharge.
Three months after sending to Spectrum and I still don't have the exciter & PA back.
I am eagerly awaiting my Visa statement to see if Spectrum has done anything.
That covers their business practices.  The quality of their work remains to be seen.

Coy:
Responses on this forum have been so numerous and strong.  They seem to have overwhelmed my offer of SCR-1000 documentation. Or maybe you have just been too busy responding to the firestorm you generated by asking if anyone had SCR-1000 documentation.
If you are still up to the challenge and not scared away by all the bad reports, I'm re-offering copies of all my docs.  Misery needs company and I'd like to have someone else to commiserate with as we try to get these things back on the air.
When things get quiet or the weather cold, we can post an occassional Spectrum statement, then stand back and warm our hands to the resultant firestorm.

Happy Holidays & 73 to all

It is an alert for the hams to be aware of decaying weather andthe need to participate with an actual skywarn net, you should chooseonly the coverage areas your users will need (I am snickering at this)and have only those alerts come thru the same radio interface which willbe made of some audio mixing circuits and an op amp to detect theinbound audio to the controller and
make a second cas signal for thecontroller to interpret thru a diode. If you make the mixer circuitusing the scope it will seems like just another user.Mike wrote:> > I talked to the ARRL regulatory department and inquired about doing this.> They told me that it was illegal because the alert is sent from outside the> amateur service. No rule change...just missinformation.
The following is Part 97.113 (e) Prohibited Transmissions
(e) No station shall retransmit programs or signals emanating from any type of radio station other than an amateur station, except propagation and weather forecast information intended for use by the general public and originated from United States Government stations and communications, including incidental music, originating on United States Government frequencies between a space shuttle and its associated Earth stations. Prior approval for shuttle retransmissions must be obtained from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Such retransmissions must be for the exclusive use of amateur operators. Propagation, weather forecasts, and shuttle retransmissions may not be conducted on a regular basis, but only occasionally, as an incident of normal amateur radio communications. [Repeater-Builder] Re:Repeater antennas?

2003-11-05 Thread Budd Turner

Several factors involved with antenna decision.
1.  How much can you afford to spend?
2.  What kind of gain do you want?
3.  Space available for antennas?
3.  What environment will the antennas be in?
  Mountaintop vs. housetop
Ice/Wind/Temp extremes vs moderate weather (no ice, light winds) 5.  New or Used?
6.  Tuned to your frequency or from a near Commercial frequency.
7.  Radiation pattern?  Omni, Cardioid, directional.
  If mountaintop amount of downtilt?

Here are some antenna suggestions, from Industrial to Amateur grade.
Celwave, Phelps-Dodge, Antenex, Motorola, Diamond, Comet, Hustler
No offense to any brand left out.
