RE: [Repeater-Builder] Doug Hall Voter - What Would One Pay.

2010-06-24 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi Mike,

You did not buy my voter. I still have mine here.

History - I brought one a couple of years back for a project in your
repeater system

Plan was to build 3 remote RX sites and feed it back to the main site (4th
RX) and expand the coverage.

However our MED (Your FCC) decided to charge for every repeater in the
country, this included Amateur repeaters. So if I was to put the 3 remote
sites and then have to add a TX to them to get back to the main site they
would be required to pay.

The group already had 7 repeaters and links, and as most will know getting
money to fund repeaters is not easy. Power, rents (ours is good), repairs
and now fees, the extra could not be justified.

So the project went out the door.

So I have been sitting on dead equipment (or money), so decided I would let
it go and have someone else make use of it.

It's a shame as it would of given more coverage on one freq. in the area. L

And thinking now, I believe digital will be the way of the future, but I
only wish it could be like the trunking systems, it is intelligent enough to
do the switching as and when required to stay online when moving around.

Regards

Kevin. ZL1KFM.

Is there anyone on the list that would like an original Tait T800 manual
with the PGM800 software? (on 5-1/4 floppy)

I have one and just about to send it on it's way to the local incinerator.

I might be able to transfer software off to 3.5 floppy if someone needs it.

Email if interested otherwise it's a goner.

I can compose the new .Bin file correctly using PGM800 Win ( i think )

is copied correctly to the chip ( via Verify ) but when the chip is installed
on the eprom board and fitted to the tx module i have no VCO lock = no transmit.

I have tried adjusting the VCO trimmer but cannot get it to lock with the
new chip installed. I have added one other frequency to the original one that
was on the original chip ( up exactly 10 mhz ) but it will not lock with either
the original Channel freq or the new one on the new chip.

The original Chip worked fine with the one that was on there and
comparing the .bin file from this and the new one both look the same when
opened with PGM800.

I have read the previous posts on this board about creating a new eprom

Hi,

Don't I now feel like a fool, I went to the tech site on Tait and found that
they have everything but the T800 series 1.
Personally I have 2x T800 S1 VHF repeaters (as well as T300 series and other

Anyway I hope the attached link will be of help to anyone.

The manual for the series two programming software ( Win ) is available in

[Repeater-Builder] RLC-3 Controller Question - Related to all Repeater Types.

2010-04-13 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi All,

I am in a situation that I need some advice on implimenting an access DTMF tone
for you repeater.

So far.

We have installed a CTCSS tone on the RX of our repeater, and have been asked
How does one access it if they don't have CTCSS onboard?
Should mentioned the repeater is open, the CTCSS is just to stop the
intermittent interference we get from either a garage door opener or home
digital TV transmitter.

Anyway back to my problem.
I am running a RLC-3 controller (6 ports) and I would like to add a feature
that would allow someone with a DTMF keypad to enter a tone, like a long-0 or
0-0?
Idea would be then for the controller to stay active in COS for around 1 min
after the tail drops. Don't want them having to enter the access tone too much,
K.I.S.S.
I do have the repeater setup for pre-access as it is part of a linked system,
the main repeater is set for * then the access codes.

I do have a little bit of code that might do the task, but I would like to see
if there is any other ideas before I proceed too far into it, might even
already be done?

Look forward to any replies.

You can TX on both bands at the same time through a diplexer. It does not
matter as long as you don't go over the rated Max power for the two.
I have run 50watts on both bands through a diamond diplexer without any
problems (was using two single band radios)
This was then fed into a dual-band diamond antenna.
Easy way to get up and running.

[Repeater-Builder] Use of GM300 for Telementry at Repeater

2009-09-03 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi Guys,

I am in the process of building a telementry logger for our repeater, using a
POCSAG encoder into a GM300.
I have gotten the connections coming in from the rear 16 pin socket. Radio is a
8 Ch, but will most likely only be programmed with 1 Ch. Still got to program
the Telementry freq into the radio.
I do not have a scope or analiser to check the audio out, and going to roughly
set it up by ear.
So far the audio sounds hot, too high. I do not have a service manual so ask
where do I look for the adjustments?

Better mention that the pins I am using are 3 - PTT, 5-POCSAG input, 7-Ground,
and 10-12volts. These are the 4 connections the POCSAG encoder instructions
said to hook up. Pins 15 and 16 are tied together for the speaker, not that it
is going to be used. Also on the standard connector that came with the GM300
pins 7 and 9 were jumpered together, however I had to pull pin 7 so I could use
the ground encoder.

Any help would be grateful.

Kevin.

Hi All,

Sorry for asking this group, but I know there is a heap of knowledgible people

Right I have a GP328 standard H/H (not the plus model, which is smaller)
The front case got damaged and I got a replacement front to make the radio
usable again.
I have been able to remove the guts from the old one but I am having problems
getting the external mic part off of it. I took the black coated piece off,
destroyed it actually but I can not seem to get the main connector strip off.
Without doing too much damage is there any tips on removing it. I see I have to
lift it somehow to be able to get it through the slot in the front case.
Speaker and mic are free.

Now back to repeaters

Thanks

Thanks for your ideas and thoughts.

The solar cells have a small regulator in line to the batteries, then batteries

We do have mains to the site but this is only for requirements when there is
heavy usage and the voltage gets down. The controller will switch to the mains.

I have everything else working okay, I was just having problems getting a

I like your other ideas and will look at these, when I have some free time to

Kevin, are you using a charge controller between the solar panel, rpt, and
batteries?
Does your controller provide any kind of monitoring of current or voltage or
state of charge?

The op-amp circuits can also be extended in range beyond the VCC by using a
voltage divider on each side of the input voltage. 1k 1% resistors are my fave
for this divider type of app. Keeps the impedance low enough you can get good
gain on the op amp with reasonable component values.

You might want to consider some sort of outboard microcontroller based data
logger.
It could tell you how many charge hours you are getting, and peak amps,
total amps, and at what time of day your
batteries reach full charge and when the charge controller begins to dump
excess voltage.
This can let you know your batteries are doing through the days / nights.

I built an APRS digipeater some years back that ran solar. Low power short
burst tx, It would fail in late December
due to lack of sunlight, and be fine otherwise throughout the year.

  Enjoy tinkering!

  Kevin,
Is your rack on a single phase feed? If so, placing a current transformer in
the black lead will give you a output current proportional to to the input. Put
a resistor across it and use the voltage input to the controller. The downside

Sounds mechanically similar to Times Microwave LMR-400 to me. I agree with
the other poster on using silver crimp-type connectors. I don't like the
cheaper chrome/nickel plated crimp connectors. The threaded portions tend to
flake when being screwed/unscrewed, which leads to odd results.

I highly suggest attaching the cable to your mast/tower/whatever so it does
not move in the wind. I also use automotive gasket maker under the crimp
ring to help seal out the elements. Doing this, I've had short N/N jumpers in
the air otherwise unsealed with no sign of weather issues after 2.5 years
(obviously nothing in radio years, but.)

solid core, foam di-electric foil + a tight braid. Don't believe this is what

I am sure I can get a connector over it.

I do not intend using it in our repeater, but was thinking of using it at

If anyone can help with some advice, I'd be grateful.

  Kevin,

It will probably be okay in a non-duplex application. Belden 7810A cable is
a variant of RG-8 and has a #10 solid aluminum center conductor with a
copper cladding. The shield comprises a tinned copper braid over a
polyester film with an aluminum foil backing. More info is here:

This type of cable works best with silver-plated connectors that are crimped

Subject: [Repeater-Builder] Coax Cable - Question

  Hi Guys,

Sorry about addressing this question here, but I know it has been talked
about before and I know there is a lot of knowledge from experence hooking
  up repeaters.

  Okay, my question.
At my work they have been installing and upgrading our wireless Lan systems.
In the process of the install they have had a number of shortest lengths of
coax cable left over. Knowing I was a ham they offered some of these to me.
Being a ham I did not turn it down, well it's 50ohm.
Now at home I checked and see it's marked Beldon 7810A RF400, 50 ohm. It's
solid core, foam di-electric foil + a tight braid. Don't believe this is
  what they call double-shielded.?
I am sure I can get a connector over it.

I do not intend using it in our repeater, but was thinking of using it at
home as leads for my HF to UHF radios to antennas (I made a junction box on
  the outside of the house).

If anyone can help with some advice, I'd be grateful.
Please do not turn this into a debate, don't want to upset the moderators -
Thanks. Just want to use it, if suitable.

Wow,

What an interesting artical. A lot of information on the early days of TV in
the US.
I was however interested in the Cone Dipole antenna they had display in a
couple of the photos. I did a quick search for cone dipole on google but came
back with no results. Would be interested in sourcing information on this
antenna and maybe it's construction.
Will try another indepth search and see what comes to light.
If anyone has any information could they pass it to me directly, save causing
issues on the group as it is OT.

Thanks Kevin, ZL1KFM.

One of the major TV stations here in Los Angeles is KTLA, on channel 5.
Klaus Landsberg, a ham (but call sign unknown) was the first chief
engineer, and designed the station back in the 1940s.

I recently found a writeup of the early days, and page 2 shows the
early antenna design. Klaus came up with a very interesting way
  to get a wide bandwidth:

Look at the bottom of page 2 of this file:
  http://web.mac.com/zcleve/KlausTribute/KLStories_files/Silva-RoseParade.pdf

Another image of the aural antenna is the second image from the bottom here:
  http://www.earlytelevision.org/w6xyz.html
The bottom paragraph of text is incorrect. The hoop antenna is mounted above
the platform visible in the bottom image.

  Other info here:
  http://web.mac.com/zcleve/KlausTribute/KlausHome.html
  and
  http://web.mac.com/zcleve/KlausTribute/KLStories.html
The Stan Chambers writeup is especially interesting.

For those that are unaware of it, Stan has been continuously
employed by KTLA since 1947 - that's over 60 years at the
same station. He's over 80 years old and still goes out on
field news assignments. Can anybody in broadcasting top that?
He's seen it all - from the early spinning disk experiments to seeing
Klaus Landsberg - a ham - invent the studio to transmitter link to the
first flying remote (the Telecopter in 1958) to today's HD cameras
  that fit in your hand.
  ( http://www.tech-notes.tv/Archive/tech_notes_139.pdf starting on
  page 11 )
His 1947 live reports from a electroplating plant explosion become
  the world's first on-the-spot news coverage. His 1949 on-scene
continuous 27½-hour report of the attempt to rescue 3-year-old
Kathy Fiscus from an abandoned 14 inch well demonstrated how
TV could show live news - until then TV was just evening
  entertainment.
(his grandson, Jaime Chambers, became a reporter at KTLA in
2003, and has two children of his own)

[Repeater-Builder] New 10mtr Repeater Active from Auckland, NZ (ZL Land) - Slightly OT

2009-02-15 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi All,

At long last the South Auckland Repeater Group, based in Auckland, NZ has
finally got it's 10mtr Repeater up and operational.
The freq is 29.640 with no CTCSS (we are not permitted to run CTCSS for access
in NZ, may have to look at it later if it requires it and we get approval).
It is connected to the groups repeater system of 2x 2mtr repeaters and one 70cm
repeater.
There have been some DX contacts through it as well as local and with pleasing
results, both on quality, strength and distance.
Equipment is 2x Mitrek Low-Band radios at split sites, TX is running 50 watts
and using Wolf Dipoles for antennas. These are controlled by RLC-2a and RLC-3
controllers.
It has voice and CW id's and Top-of-the-hour beacon Ident.

It has taken far too long to get up and running, but it is now there. Would be
interested once things improve (propergation) in what it operates like further
away.

2009-02-15 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi Eric,

In responce to your email.

In NZ the regulary body (Govt) states that access to any Amateur Radio
installion must be available to all access.
What this means to us that we can only use carrier access, no tones like in a
CTCSS system.
Unlike in the US there are not that many repeater systems close by that would
require some form of tone access to prevent interferance.
In our case the closest 10mtr repeater on 29.64 is in Australia some 1200Kms
away.

Hope this helps explain why we can not use a tone. The short answer is Legal.

Hi,
Is there a point inside the Mitrek that one can take the audio out to the

I have downloaded the information fromLou's Mitrek Repeater Conversion and a

I would like to leave this out if possible and feed directly?

I would think a coil retro like what I make available for the MICOR will

[Repeater-Builder] Diamond X510 Failure

2008-11-12 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
HI All,

After 15 years of faithful service our Diamond X510 dual-band RX antenna has
failed.
We started getting some noise and poor signal input to the 2mtr repeater. We
had decided to check the 2x X510 antennas (1x TX and 1x RX).
A couple of weeks ago the TX was checked and found to still be in fairly good
condition, we did however solder the crimp joints.
Today we pulled the top antenna down which runs the 2mtr RX and the 70cm
repeater.
Once we opened the antenna we found that it had come apart just above the
bottom joint, and the very top of the element was split. Now we know why the RX
had turned bad.
No recovery for this antenna.
We want to replace it with something that can be used for the 2mtr and 70cm
repeaters. So far other then the antenna dual-band antennas there is nothing to
replace it with from a commercial type.
But maybe there is something that could be used?
There is a thought that maybe due to the lenght of the antenna and the winds we
get up on the hill this has added to the damage. We are thinking to replace it
with a Diamond X300 dual-band, a third shorter and a little less gain.

Any thoughts on a replacement would be helpful, I will pass it onto the other
trustees.

[Repeater-Builder] Commerical Grade Diplexer for 2mtrs and 70cm - Are They Available?

2008-10-19 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi All,

I am interested in obtaining a commerical grade diplexer for 2mtrs and 70cm
over a ham grade one.
Question is, Are these available? And of course if they are what is the best
supplier?
I want to use one in a repeater installation off of 1x Diamond X510 dual-band
antenna.
(For those interested, we pulled one of our X-510 antennas down for service.
Plled the radiator out and looked good for 10 years plus of service. Even the
screws were still tight, and we get some good winds up on the hill it is
located, straight off the Pacific and Tasman Sea. Interesting they use brass
and copper for parts of the sections. I think we will however sweat silver
solder in the joint as most are only crimpped)

Look forward to your replies.

I have worked with using a TS-440S as a HF remote, using a SSB Smart Squelch

I am however in the need of a trigger for when it is used as a FM receiver in
the 10mtr band. I would like to avoid using the busy light if at possible
(maybe as a last resort)
Has anyone done this successfully, and willing to share the information. Happy

Anything with a drop to 0 volts for active would be great, using a RLC-3
controller.

[Repeater-Builder] Power Supply from a PC. Slightly OT

Hi All,

This request is slightly OT but still for Amateur and possible Repeater use.
I read an artical about using a PC power supply as a 12 and 5 volt/ high amp
atable power supply for the bench.
Looking over the specs it looks good for 12v at 19A and 5v at over 30A. Was
interested and due to the size of the PC power supply takes up a lot less room
on the bench then my standard Ham power unit.

Before I go and use one of these (Have a couple of spares), I would like to
know if anyone has already tried this, and if so what problems has it caused?
Being a switch-mode is it very nosiey on HF or even the upper bands?

Jim,

Thank you for that information. I remembered a DMV I have with a freq reading
on it. I had forgot about it because I had a mishap when moving and the LCD
spread in the bottom left corner and put t to one side. Still able to read most
of the display. Anyway I pulled it out, and it was able to read Hz, and I was
able to use it to set the CTCSS freq. It was bang on with the freq, as I
compared it against one a setup with the NZ$1000+ gear I used at work, not bad
for a NZ$200 DMV. (CHY 22, Chinese brand)

I have a digital multimeter that does a great job counting low
frequencies. It only goes up to 1 mHz, and has the counter function as one of
the capabilities. It also will tell me the value of unknown capacitors and
inductors, along with all the normal volt, ohm, current multimeter functions.
I think the meter puts a known inductor across the unknown capacitor and counts
the freq that it oscillates on to determine the capacitance. Likewise it
places a known capacitor across an unknown inductor to count the osc freq and
determine the value of the inductor, so the freq counter was necessary for
those functions.

I have used mine to tune a PL on freq when it was one of the variable
type and it worked fine after the adjustment, so I know it is reasonably
accurate.

However I had a need to read the freq of some CTCSS modules, but when
I went to use my counter I found that it would only go to 1Mhz.
I do not have another counter handy and I understand that I can build
a small add-on board to get it to read down below the min reading of the
counter. Is a multiplier the correct term?
Any ideas on what I can do? If I have to get another counter so be
it, but for the number of times I go below 1Mhz I would like to try other ideas
first.

  Thanks

  Kevin, ZL1KFM.

Kevin, why would we not be able to see this in the USA? It's on
NBC's Dateline, and I watch it often... VCR rolling (I still have
  one...!)

[Repeater-Builder] Getting a Freq Counter to Read Lower

2008-07-19 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi All,

I have a Optoelectronics Handi-Counter Model 2300. I brought it at Dayton in
1995. A great piece of equipment, and I use it alot. Still works fine, except I
pulled the NICADs out a few year back, not holding there charge, and never got

[Repeater-Builder] Need a Switching Curcuit for AC/Battery Power

2008-07-13 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi,

I have a need for switching AC and Battery power at our repeater site.
Current setup is mains 230v AC and 12v Battery charging via solar cells.
Due to the increasing chargers for mains (and still going up) we want to
utilise battery power more and use the mains for back-up and when the batteries
drop below 11v.
The mains is connected to a power supply at 13.8v, this is in parallel with the
batteries.
I had built a small switching curcuit with 2x relays. One relay has the AC
inline so the mains power supply can be turned off by the controller remotely
or by the scheduler. The second relay was triggered by the AC line so that if
the mains went off it would tell the controller which would then switch the
repeater to low power mode, timers etc.
The problem with the way I had set it up was that when the mains was switched
off, even with a solid 12+v on the battery the relay would click continusally
because the controller for some reason would see a low voltage and switch the
mains relay back on. When the volts was back up to the 13.8v the mains relay
would switch off again, back to battery power. I may be pulling straws here in
what is actualy happening.
I have tried to remendy the problem, and had it working for awhile, but it then
started doing it again. I woud like some suggestions on what way to go?
Should mention I am using a RLC-3 controlling the repeater and ower
requirements.

Thanks

Kevin.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Selectone ST-104 Help

2008-07-09 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Laryn and Others,

First of all thank you for your information, I have used this to install the
modules.
BUT (yes there is a but) the things don't trigger. I do have the information
sheet already downloaded from Repeater-Builder.

I fitted a pull-up resister to the decode- line and have 8v on the line, but
when I TX the tone from my HH I get no triggering, it stays at 8v.
I have set the ST-104 to the required freq using a spec-an from work and it was
set on the req frq I want, within a couple of Hz.

I am now looking at what other possible issues might be causing it not to
switch.

Thanks

Kevin.

I assume you are feeding the unit with audio directly from the
  discriminator, right?

How are you checking for decode. If using the Decode- output, for
example, you will need a pullup resistor because it is an open
  collector output.

I don't have a working unit handy so I can't answer your other
questions right now, but check on those things first, and I or others
  will guide you deeper.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Selectone ST-104 Help

2008-07-09 Thread Gmail - Kevin, Natalia, Stacey Rochelle
Hi All,

I feel like a complete idiot, I was using my Kenwood TH-78A HH with the tone on
and wondering why I could not get a trigger from the ST-104 CTCSS board.
I then had a thought and used my TM-D700A and then it worked, triggered when
there was a valid CTCSS tone. I can now guess my HH does not produce a CTCSS
tone when the tone button is activated.
So now I have the Repeater RX triggering as it;'s required to do.
Sorry for the question about 30mins ago.

Regards

Kevin.
