[Repeater-Builder] 1272 Mhz Preamp

2008-01-17 Thread Steven Samuel Bosshard (NU5D)
I am looking for a supplier of low noise high performance receiver
preamps and preselectors for a 1272.100 receiver. I have contacted one
of the suppliers on the repeater builder information page, but I placed
the order in August and cannot get anything but an answering machine and
no returned calls.

First hand information would be nice.

[Repeater-Builder] Lloyd is Well was Cable Lengths

2007-07-27 Thread Steven Samuel Bosshard (NU5D)
Just a few minutes ago I had a really nice chat with Lloyd Alcorn, one
of the three founders of Wacom Products. Lloyd's background includes
being a professional engineer working for Decibel Products and helped
design the DB 222 folded dipole antenna. Lloyd Alcorn, Larry Bush
(W5NCD) and Kit Parsons (deceased) founded Wacom Products and for many
years Wacom existed in a couple of service bays at Waco Communications,
an RCC and Land Mobile shop in Waco. I worked for Waco Communications
from 1975 thru 1981 in the RCC end of things but had much contact with
the Wacom folks even after I went into business for myself in 1985.

According to Lloyd, the cable length between a duplexer and an inline
cavity filter and the receiver makes little or no difference. The
culprit to beware of is - radiation from the receiver toward the inline
cavity filter. The LO is the primary source of this radiation, but
there may also be other signals generated by the receiver. This low
level signal sets up standing waves between the receiver and the cavity
filter and may cause some black magic to enter into the equation.
Changing the cable length may help reduce the effects of stray radiation
between the receiver and the cavity should this occur.

Placing a band pass cavity between the receiver and the duplexer will
make no difference at all if the interfering signal is on the receive
frequency.

Now the transmitter. Again most but not all of the time, the cable
length between the transmitter and the duplexer will make no difference,
EXCEPT that the transmitter may have other out of band energy that again
sets up standing waves between the transmitter and the duplexer and
these unwanted signals bounce back and forward between the transmitter
PA and the duplexer and intensify. This is where a magic cable length
can help. Also an isolator can help not withstanding the isolator does
create it's own set of problems.

Lloyd still lives and Waco. I promised NOT to give his phone number and
he said he is not in hiding. He is still very active, golfing from time
to time and serving in the Baptist Church there in Waco. His health is
good, except for the standard maladies of getting older. He did mention
that Kit's demise came quickly, having talked with Kit some months
earlier and Kit made no mention of an illness.

Lloyd gives his best regards to all the folks he worked with over the
years - said when they get up in the morning, sometime they go back to
bed - don't have to go to work.

[Repeater-Builder] DStar Repeater Pics

2007-05-23 Thread Steven Samuel Bosshard \(NU5D\)
I just snapped a couple of pix of the Temple, Texas DSTAR Installation. The
Gateway is non-functional waiting on software from Icom, but the rest of the
stuff is hot and ready. I added an extra 5" 3/4 Wavelength cavity in front
of the receiver (beige DB Products can in the last picture). Using a dual
band fiberglass ham quality antenna (till I get time to hang another DB420)
on a 175 ft Rohn 45 G fed with 1/2" LMR 500. The WP639 is one of the early
ones built by Lloyd Alcorn and tuned by John Elliot back around 1985 or so.
The extra cavity is to help with overload from a 5 channel 450 Mhz LTR
system and a 5 Channel 856 Mhz LTR system on the same tower. The local ISP
has a point of presence on this tower with a semi broadband connection back
to his demarc - I have a nic installed in his linux switch - kinda like
having a friend at the factory, so to speak. In a nutshell, 25 Watt
repeater running D-STAR JARL format with a Dell computer for the Gateway, in
a 6.25 Khz Channel with room for 2M and 23cm.

I totally mis-read you earlier post. Forgive my off key response.

First the benefits to the community and the tower owner.

Second no risk to the tower owner - qualified personnel, bonded and insured.

See if any of the tower owners folks are hams, or if there are already hams
with equipment installed, see if you can work together.

No interference to the owner's equipment or services.

See if you can get the owner's contractor involved - Yep, we use old so and
so at Tower Tech to do our work.

Use of tower can count as a charitable donation to the 503C3 entity needing
the tower.

Just a few - I wish you best luck. Had one tower owner that would not say
no. Trouble is he would not say yes either - I finally gave up.

2007-05-02 Thread Steven Samuel Bosshard \(NU5D\)
I was just thinking, in public safety the typical transmisssion is much less
than 10 seconds. 30 seconds would be long, an 60 seconds almost unheard of.

60 seconds should be adequate for almost any amateur radio 'shared repeater'
operation. If the OM needs more time, make a short pause (maybe see if
there is something "important" needing to be broadcast), and then resume.
This is more a good operating technique than anything to do with rules, kind
of like not carrying on QSO's on a calling channel or monitoring both
frequencies when trying to work Scarborough Island split on 20 Meters

By large and far, modern equipment has been very trouble free. In my real

"non-open standards" have always been legal. The point is whether you
need a special code or other key to receive it, ie, can the FCC pick up

I remember once upon a time a couple of hams were running RTTY on 2M using a
non-ascii code. Back then the take was that as long as both parties kept a
record of the coding being used and had same readily available for
inspection in their station records that it was OK. That and 42cents will

coordinators sort it out. Be it DSTAR, P25, AOR DV (this works pretty nice
on an FM repeater) Alinco's format or some new and yet to be decided format,
it should not make the coordinator any difference. I don't believe the FCC
asks whether the user in public safety is running P25 or M/A COM ProVoice.

Also terminate the unused port. This is not a highly precise way to do the

Hello Dave,

If you really want tears in your eyes, I was in Wacom's Plant a few years
ago visiting - they were about 75 km from my home, and they had the entire
packaging and testing area filled with 70mhz duplexers - They had a contract
to provide duplexers to a European Lottery operator, and they used the band
to convey ticket sales and lottery information. There must have been over
100, 2 72 Mhz duplexers being made ready for shipping.

I was dead serious about the aluminum irrigation pipe. They had a local
electroplating firm cadmium plate the pipe, then silver plate, until our
natural resource commission shut down the electroplating company - too many
dead fish in the Brazos.

How the Brazos river got it's name is another story, Anyhow, I don't doubt
the use of aluminum kegs, and that some folks have had misery, and others
success. Lloyd Alcorn (one of the founders of Wacom) always refered to
duplexer design as black magic. BTW most of the Wacom Team came from
Decibel Products in Dallas, Texas. Lloyd designed the DB224 antenna there.
Gene Mulderik, Daylon Johnson, and several others came from DB Products.

When I had a 6M FM repeater I used 2, single folded dipole antennas, with 30
m vertical seperation, and took the preselector out of a junk motrac mobile
for extra front end protection - the repeater worked OK and mobiles out 200
km could work it, (the antenna was 600m above ground). In 1980, there was
not much 6M FM activity in Central Texas.

BTW - are many of ur friends operating 60M? I am looking to sked for a
US/UK contact on 5403.5 sometime in the wee hours of the morning here.

Best 73, good luck, happy new year, and heavy on the INVAR alloy. Steve

mic input thru a pad - NO MORE.

BUY a simple controller from any of a number of places check the internet -
do a google search - hook it up according to their instructions and get on
with life. If you have trouble, email the folks who sold you the
controller. You get hang time, audio coupling, time out timer, control
receiver input, morse ID and other features too numerous to mention, all for
less than $100 (some less than $50)

Consider the purchase of the ARRL Handbook or ARRL FM and Repeaters for more
detailed information. If this is too difficult find a fellow ham in your
community that might help you - there should be at least one other ham who
is willing - why else have a repeater? A bottle of good Scotch or Irish
whiskey should be suitable enticement.

Merry Christmas to all, and to this 'simple controller topic' a good night.

If you really want to have some fun, attach a doublet to your tower. One end
thru an insulator at the top, and the other end thru an insulator near the

away from the tower to form a 90 degree (thereabouts) included angle. This has
some resemblance to a K3LR vertical 160 M antenna. Mine is 2 lengths of 120 ft
each on a 180 ft self supporting tower. The antenna is oriented about 15
degrees from true North - Nice 75M into Europe. sb

Zetron to M3 wiring list.  This is
a drawing used to connect a Zetron repeater controller to a GE MastrIII
station.  It may be similar to a M2E, but I am not sure.   Hope
this helps.  Your milage may vary.  Also a ms word doc on how a Doug
Hall voter was wired to the M3.

[Repeater-Builder] Extra Super Hams

2006-02-17 Thread Steven Samuel Bosshard \(NU5D\)
Hey, got a couple here that come close. W5POG, Poor Old George Erickson
celebrated 70 years as a ham radio operator yesterday. Was first licensed
at age 14. Don't know what celebrate means at age 84 but hope to find out.
Also Arden Clinger, W5CCD truned 90 late last year. Both are reasonably
active and lucent. Maybe these guys could be grandfathered for years of
service.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: old mobile telephone systems

2006-02-17 Thread Steven Samuel Bosshard \(NU5D\)
Regarding RCC Channels, some system operators use the VHF and UHF
mobilephone channels for LTR trunking with interconnect. This is permitted
under FCC rules except there is more reporting to the commission. I started
in 1975 maintaining a GE IMTS system and also used a SECODE 2805 / VP1
system. Imagine the radio drawing 2 amperes in standby, either the Motrac
with a 5894 filament and VP1 head, or the Mot T1433 Solid State with scads
of pnp transistors and a FACTS (Fully automated car telephone system)
Control head. There was also a Rydax system in area...Dah Dee Dum(used
3 sequential tones for mobile dialing).

| There was an FCC audit of part 22 freqs last year. If you weren't
| constructed, or failed to answer the letter, your license was pulled.
| I bet if you search ULS, you won't find very many Verizon licenses left

[Repeater-Builder] This is sure getting away from Enhancing the Art of the Mobile Relay

2006-02-17 Thread Steven Samuel Bosshard \(NU5D\)
Please indulge me one more tidbit. Of off topic blather

The object of the Morse test is to demonstrate the ability to receive Morse
at 5 WPM, and then demonstrate comprehension. Taking 45 minutes to
translate dots and dashes into text does not constitute the ability to
receive Morse at 5WPM.

In our VE sessions we announce in advance of the test that copying dots and
dashes is not permitted. Other VE teams may allow this but this team does
not.

Regarding the comment to the effect "I can repair equipment but not operate
it." I have been there myself. I remained a tech for nearly 10 years and
had a lot of fun building repeaters, hanging antennas and experimenting.
Getting HF privilages does not immediately give you acceptance on the low
bands. There is a rite of passage. A good example would be the old men at
the coffee shop at a table to themselves. You don't just grab a chair and
join them. If you are careful and do a lot of listening, you might be
invited to join in.

Maybe not the best way to go about it, but this is the way it is.

2006-02-08 Thread Steven Samuel Bosshard \(NU5D\)
 http://www.k7pp.com/art003.html

Nice and to the point - I remember one of the VHF paging guys running
152.240 TX and receiving a 72 Mhz frequency with a single VHF antenna - he
added a band pass cavity in front of the 72Mhz receiver. I ran a 147.280
repeater with a DB222 antenna and a 444.025 control radio on the same
antenna using a cross band coupler - I could afford some degradation in the
444.025 leg.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Question

2006-01-27 Thread Steven Samuel Bosshard \(NU5D\)
I am using 2 GE phoenix SX UHF to tie 146.66 in Waco to 146.82 in Temple -
works FB. I am sure the radius will work well for this task. You may need
to protect the link radio from the 440 repeater transmitter and vice versa
with some cavity filters. On 2M with a 440 control link and DB222 repeater
antenna, I have used a cross band coupler (one of the $25 cheapies) and run
both the 2m repeater PLUS the 440 link on the 2M antenna - just a thought.
Your milage may vary,
