Re: [Repeater-Builder] Spectra time-bomb caps.

Is there a link to this article?
I had a copy of instructions on re capping once but misplaced it when I

Steve Murphy wrote:

Hello everyone,

A couple of weeks ago, I sent Bob, WA1MIK a message thanking him for
his fine article on recapping the Spectra radios.

At work, we have a fleet with several hundred 800 MHz Spectra C5 and
C7 mobiles. Over the past year or so, they've been dropping like
flies. I've now gone through nearly 50 Spectras with various
problems, and in all but four radios, replacing the electrolytic caps
and cleaning the circuit boards restored proper operation! There were
many different symptoms, but the one thing that I saw repeatedly were
radios that would work OK when first powered up, and then develop
various problems after running a while.

Bob's article gives Digi-Key and Mouser part numbers for the
replacement capacitors. I've used the Mouser numbers, and they're
right on target.

On the last batch of radios that I repaired, I did deviate from Bob's
parts list in that I used a 10uF/25V tantalum to replace the 10uF/16V
factory electrolytics. The reason for the substitution is that the
tantalum cap is physically smaller, making it easier to install,
especially in the tight spaces near the audio IC. The Mouser part
number for this cap is: 74-595D106X9025B2T.

Another thing worth noting is that in the three 900 MHz Spectras that
I've recapped, the 47uF cap on the RF board was not present. It was
present on all of the 800 MHz and 450 MHz Spectras that I've worked on.

Thanks again to Bob for his article, and I hope that this posting
might help someone else.

[Repeater-Builder] For Sale GE MVP Repeater

2007-01-16 Thread Vincent Caruso
I just took out of service an MVP repeater on the 464.XXX /469.XXX it
is already duplexed and wired for a Zetron model 38 controller. This
radio was privately labeled for Logisticon by GE and is in a blue case
with just an on off switch on the front and the mic connector on the side.

It was in use until 1/12/07 and in good working condition the only
reason we pulled it was to replace it with a narrow band complaint repeater.

The tx was set to low power and drove a continuous duty Henry amp with
no problem.

Looking for reasonable offers.

Make me an offer I can't refuse + shipping and it's yours

If you would like pics please contact me off the list

Telex has some info on their site as well, but most common commercial

crimp the ID-8 flying leads into the appropriate modular plug. You may need
to install a jumper inside the radio to bring the activity signal to the
ID-er, so that it won't perpetually key itself. Some of the very
inexpensive ID-ers have little or no RF immunity, and don't operate properly
when close to the transmitter. The ID-8 is a versatile and reliable device.

[Repeater-Builder] Midland Base Tech Repeater Controller Question

2006-03-14 Thread Vincent Caruso
Hello All,

I was just gifted with a project involving a Midland UHF Base-Tech
repeater, the preliminary check on this thing seem fine 9operating as a
base), however while sitting in storage someone glommed the controller
and CTCSS boards.

My questions are, has anyone on this board interfaced a controller and
CTCSS encoder /decoder to one of these? If so how?
Now here is the long shot, dose anyone have an original controller board
for one of these and perhaps the original CTCSS board?

Thanks

This is a new one to me.I have several remote receivers and repeaters

trying to get out of their contract and using your equipment as the

states that the equipment cabinets are to only house elevator related
controls only, but it states nothing about the room it self.

I signed a lease with a building to place an antenna on the roof and a
repeater and cabinet inside of the elevator room for a said amount of
money. About 6 months ago I completed the install and everything has
 been kosher since.

Today I got a call from the Security manager asking me to meet up with
him and the elevator maintenance man regarding a problem with my
equipment. This meeting was very simple, I was asked to remove my
equipment from the elevator room, not because it is causing problems,
but because it has the potential to cause problems.

I was told the following things:

440 Mhz is too high of a frequency to be in an elevator room

NFPA and the elevator code says that nothing can be stored inside
of an elevator room other than equipment directly relating to the
 operation
of the elevator system

Even if the unit is just receiving, it is still building up
 frequency on the walls
of the room that will cause bad things to happen eventually.

While normally I would tell this fine maintenance man which door he
could use on his way out, he is pulling rank and telling me that if
the unit stays in the room longer than 1 month, his company will no
longer be able to honor it's service contract with the building.
So Sounds like I'm up a creek

The fact still remains though, I've never heard of NFPA specifying
anything about elevator rooms and I've never heard of an elevator
code (but that's not saying it isn't out there). I've also been in
plenty of other elevator rooms in which radio frequency equipment was
housed and transmitting sometimes in excess of 10 times my power with
no issues... Why is this becoming an issue with me?

Any suggestions? Anyone know of a good waterproof cabinet that can
go outside? Is that a good idea? Help.

 Justin

Whats the issue with the water company site?
We recently got access to the local water commission tower site no

It did however take them forever to bring our request in front of the

For starters dump the RG 8 Feedline and invest in some 1/2 or 7/8Hard

Also what brand type of repeater is this?

Antenna Height = 27.0m, rooftop tripod
HAAT =16.4, elevation gains going south but drops quite a bit going north.
Gain = purchased an Antenex FG1523, 3dB Fiberglass Omni
Feedline = RG8, mentioned 9913 when I went to the shop but the coax has
no markings on it when I got it so I'm not quite sure if I got it or not :)
Power of Transmitter = 50w, 35w after duplexer
Duplexer = Sinclair MR256B*2 - Mobile Type, tuned by shop
 VHF-Hi, 152.8850 159.5400

receiver sensitivity. A transmitter PA that produces a dirty

isolation than a pure-carrier tube PA and a very narrow-band receiver.

Does the range improve if you reduce transmitter power to, say, 20

Does the range improve if you remove any preamplifier on the receive

Does the range improve if you put a single bandpass cavity with 1.0

insertion loss between the duplexer and the receiver? Is the duplexer
*known* to be properly tuned?

It's easy! What you need is known as a
multicoupler.This unit usually comprises a

amplifier is tailored to the number of splits so

I've been a ham 20 years and have put several repeaters on the air for 6
meters thru 440 MHz.

Linking on 2 meters? Maybe on 220

Corey N3FE

There is always the split site solution for 6M repeaters, where your
transmitter and receiver reside in two separate locations linked by a 2M
 or 70cm freq.
Its always a possibility but getting two sites of equal coverage can be
a bit time consuming but for 6M it would be my first choice

for
that type of duty cycle you will have to turn the o/p power down low and drive a
continuous duty PA.

  [Repeater-Builder] GM-300 5-pin UHF radio as remote
baseSorry I do not have the model number available. A
club I am a member of has lost their UHF remote base radio. I have a GM-300
5-pin radio I can pull to loan them indefinitely. Their requirements are a
binary select, frequency agile UHF transceiver. If this radio will
work, what mods do I need to do to it? The remote base is used for IRLP,
Southeastern Linked Repeater Net, and Skywarn. With the SLRN it could be keyed
  down for as long as 1 - 1 1/2 hours.73.CHRIS
